Azure - Engi

5

Overall, my experience using Azure to build and host infrastructure has been very positive due to its strong balance of scalability, security, and ease of management. The seamless integration of RBAC with Entra ID simplifies identity and access control, making it easier to enforce least-privilege principles across environments. I’ve found that deploying resources through Infrastructure as Code is straightforward and efficient, which helps streamline workflows and maintain consistency. While there are occasional bugs or unexpected issues, they are typically manageable and outweighed by the platform’s robust capabilities and continuous improvements.

5

Functionality

Pros:

I enjoy using Azure to stand up and host infrastructure because it provides a flexible and scalable platform that aligns well with modern cloud design principles. The integration of RBAC with Entra ID makes access control seamless, allowing me to manage permissions in a centralized and secure way. I also appreciate how easy it is to deploy and manage resources using Infrastructure as Code, which helps ensure consistency and repeatability across environments. Overall, Azure simplifies both the deployment and governance of infrastructure, making it a reliable choice for building robust systems.

Cons:

While I do occasionally run into bugs or platform quirks, the overall experience and capabilities Azure provides still make it a strong choice for building and managing infrastructure. Microsoft's support can sometimes be slow to resolve issues. This is dependent on your support plan.

Reasons for choosing Microsoft Azure

Microsoft's Azure integration into the Office 365 suite/entra ID was the deciding factor.

we were able to move our older IT on premises infrastructure into the Cloud. It was not as difficult as we had expected, but we did have assistance from a consultant.

Cons:

Its pricing model is a bit cumbersome. They have one bill for Azure, one for M365, another for Teams + Co Pilot, and they don't always line up date-wise

Reasons for switching to Microsoft Azure

We are going fully remote and no longer have an office for hardware based infrastructure. It was actually Windows Server not Windows 11, but Capterra does not have a drop down for Windows Server for some reason.

There is a wide variety of components, ranging from Infrastructure as a Sevice (IaaS) to Software as a Service (SaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS). The services I find more useful (apart virtual machines) are Application Insights and Docker Image Registries, two components that tipically take a lot of effort to set up on premises.

Cons:

Unfortunately if you have Azure bulk credits because you participate in some Microsoft programs, there is currently no way to set budget alerts or thresholds, so you must keep an eye on usage. Also, OpenAI costs are still high compared to competition.
