Sage 100 Contractor Software (formerly Sage Master Builder)

Sage 100 Contractor, formerly known as Sage Master Builder, focuses on small to midsize construction companies, whether they are a general contractor, service or specialty contractor or a home builder.

Suitable for companies that have outgrown generic accounting software, the suite of applications encompass the entire construction cycle and include accounting, estimating, project scheduling and management, job costing and service management. The software provides an interactive dashboard that provides instant visibility into things like the status of current job costs, pending operations or company performance. The dashboard also enables users to drill down into larger data sets and see further details like invoices generated or the latest change order.

Users can leverage multiple reporting templates available to generate customizable business reports as per business need. Using predefined yet customizable alerts, the system can also send out an email notifying employees of issues like an expiring certificate of insurance or a low bank balance. A centralized view of projects lets the team see anything related to a job like estimates, invoices, job cost reports, change orders, RFIs, punch lists and more.

Sage 100 Contractor also has cloud-based capabilities through Sage Construction Anywhere. Sage’s network of business partners and consultants, and their ongoing customer phone support, all specialize in construction software.

Pros

I love the ease of entering data and printing out the respective reports.
Very user friendly.
Updates are a breeze to download/upload.
The technical representatives are very knowledgeable and helpful. They have never let me down.

Cons

None; I have never had a question or concern that didn't get resolved the first time; we just have to wait until 9:00 a.m. local time to initiate the on-line chat (but on the flip side, we have until 6:00 p.m. local time to contact them).

Pros

Cons

Learning curve is a little longer when starting out. The scheduling module is not good. Customizing reports is not easy.

Overall I do like the program. It has made my life alot easier.

Pros

Easy to use, once you have taken the training. This product takes care of financial and project management in one easy entry. The end of year process is made simple and Sage sends out a year end checklist so that you don't forget anything. The Sage University and Sage City offer a a lot of information, but anytime I have had to contact Customer Service they have helped solve my troubles in a timely and knowledgeable fashion.

Cons

Although there are numerous reports in the system, they don't always meet our need, I have tried to modify or create my own report but it is not user friendly. I had pay Constructive Solutions to create the report needed. Not all reports can be converted to Excel, which creates extra work, if an excel spreadsheet is required.
Also I find the Bank Reconciliations challenging, the sorting options are not great, even though I know lots have requested a numeral sorting option it has not been done (yet, hopefully it is coming)

Pros

This product is really a one stop shop. You don't really need a ton of supplementary programs to run your business. This program can do a lot and there isn't a need for any other project management soft wares.

Cons

The product is not intuitive. You need to be trained on it and if there is something you don't know how to do it is not easy to figure it out.
It also has a few technical difficulties and the customer service for this product is very inefficient.

Overall I really like Sage, but it would be so much cooler if it was cloud based

Pros

The way Sage is set up is that it will not let you make mistakes. As in you can't change things at will you have to dig in and change transactions from the source. This means that everything will be correct, this also means that it's a lot more of a hassle if you make a mistake. Still so many features that slowly our team is incorporating into our everyday systems that I think if used properly can make your life so much easier

Cons

So unless you are a coder/ super IT guy, there are many things with Sage that will give you trouble, like report writing and getting all of your computers to talk to each other, and now they have it so you can't call them until you chat online with them which is Sooooooo annoying. I have had really good customer service and really bad customer service with them, just depends on who you get, and how willing they are to help you.

It takes a lot for me to give a bad review for anyone, so this is how far I've been pushed. We've had this program for over a year and we all wish we had gone with a different one!

Pros

I think it could be a good product but no one will get you past basic training unless you pay a ton of money to get it.

Cons

Everything is a fight to get where and what you need. Things that should be basic construction billing, service, payroll etc are impossible to find. If you want help, forget it. You can "live chat" after being on the wait list for hours, or put in a service ticket only to be told to take their classes. No immediate help, Also you have to go through a "Sage re-seller" to get Sage in the first place.

As an overall comment , Sage 100 contractor will fit all your requirement if your company is in a small to medium size range , you will have control over all the construction stages , from project scheduling , estimating , job cost and service management. with all the reporst template you can quickly have a visual understand of all the progress.

Pros

is a complete suite so you will be able to go thru every aspect needed in construction from scheduling to estimating , RFI and Change order. it is relatively easy to use and uderstand and you will have a lot of capabilities with the reports either you use custom or default templates.

Cons

there is nothing to say that can be a cons because you can manage the entire process with it , i mean , you can get the job done with this , maybe it would be great to not have the necessity of some updates to have the ability to send mass emails to all vendors.

Customer Support

Value for Money

Pros

The software is easy to use - screen layouts are easy to maneuver and data input keystrokes are efficient. Report capabilities offer a multitude of variations and the options for customized reports is available.

Cons

Portions of the system need to be updated! Particularly there currently is not a way to do a mass email to all vendors involved in a project without accessing every one! This is making the system outdated. Also there is a disconnect regarding sales tax - it doesn’t automatically follow from takeoff to PO - you have to open and indicate sales tax on every PO that requires it - the only way to get around this is to tax the full job...

Not user friendly!

Pros

So far nothing, very disappointed!!!. We've been using this software since January and the contractor that sold us the product said it included union wage reporting. However, they forgot to say that it would cost more to do those reports. That was the main reason we changed from Sage 50 to Sage 100.

Cons

Its a very time consuming program, a lot of back and forth entering infor, saving, then printing. Trying to find reports or files also very time consuming. On quarterlys reporting they local tax needs to be updated for overrides, because if there is an override done the report won't pickup those totals.

Sage 100 Contractor is easy to navigate, prints great reports and is very easy to incorporate your bookkeeping needs. I would highly recommend this program.

Pros

Sage has a wonderful support team that are very helpful and quick in fixing any "quirks" that may appear. Usually the "quirks" are due to a Windows update and not something that was caused by the program itself. I really find the Contractor 100 program easy to use and navigate and it has been wonderful using it for the last 10 years or so.

Cons

I do not have any cons about this program. The only thing I wish the program would do that it does not is to change the year automatically on the lien waivers.

Sage 100 Contractor is a good program for small to medium construction companies. It is user friendly and straight forward.

Pros

This software has a pretty good HR setup for entering employees, as well as a flow for payroll processing. A/P and A/R are easy and straightforward to use.

Cons

This program does not export reports to Excel well at all. I use data in Excel to create pivot tables in order to answer specific questions/for auditing purposes/etc, however when data is exported into Excel it is often almost unusable.

Pros

It is a basic, simple contractor package, estimates, bills, customers, lets me run the business. the navigation is pretty straight forward, the reports are all there that anyone would need, and it installs simply.

Cons

Customer support is terribly lacking. When something goes wrong I am often down for the rest of the day and into the next day. they don't call back many times, and because I use it in the evening there is no support then. I have to cal them during their hours, and when I miss a return call, i have to call back and wait on hold for a long time.

I love how it is an all in one product with options to add to it for your business needs. Ease of invoicing clients and keeping up with clients balances and pending orders. Clients like that they can receive invoices and account statuses via email.

Cons

The main thing as a bookkeeping is that reconciliation is a very long process and there is no way of locking the books so changes can't be made by others.
The inventory system is very overwhelming when updating levels after doing inventory counts.
I never had great success with support and when I did get some help it was someone who wasn't very educated in the matter or Couldn't help me.
Entering charges from bank statements is a long process and not always easy to use.
But overall if your main need is invoicing and creating quotes for clients this is the software for you.

Mainstream application that is customizable with some time and a little effort :)

Pros

This program has allowed us to manage our finances and our operations / inventory under one software application. We appreciate the evolution of the software - regular upgrades to improve on functionality. Operating in a Sage product means most finance staff are at least familiar with the work environment when they begin work. Payroll is always spot on!

Cons

I wish there was a better work around in Canada for banking/accruing time for employees - we find Excel on the side is best for now but hope to see improvements in the future.

Customer statements base the 30/60/90 days on calendar month so if a bill went out on Feb 28th - it would show 30 days on the statement the next day (March 1st).

The INCREDIBLE customer service - always willing to assist. They've solved every issue I had throughout the transition from Sage 50 to Sage 100 and have continued to give me exceptional customer support every time. I would not want to be without Sage 100 support.

Cons

The Accounts Receivable module doesn't allow you to do a quote and then turn it into an invoice. I've had to use the Service Receivable module to be able to write a quote that could be turned into an invoice, which seems cumbersome to me - I'd much prefer having anything to do with A/R in the A/R module.

Financial Reports, monthly and year end reporting, job costing, payroll reporting

Pros

The software is real easy to learn, as I came from a company that only used quickbooks. The functionality of Sage 100 is tremendous. It is real easy to track vendors and make changes as needed. The end of year process is made very simple and Sage sends out a year end checklist so that you don't forget anything. One of the items that I struggle with is the number of reports that are in the system and trying to find the one that gives the owners what they want for information. I have tried to modify the reports but it is not real user friendly. Other than that I don't have a lot of negatives

All of our business information in one software.

Pros

The software is capable of storing a lot of information for all aspects in construction. It's easy to maneuver around within the modules from anywhere in the software.

Cons

We have modified some reports and goes pretty smoothly once you have been working on them. It takes a little time to re-acquaint yourself on how to do it since we don't modify items that often. I don't like when there are some reports that you can't modify which we would like to.

Pros

It is all-inclusive. I like that you don't have to re-enter information and the applications in the software work with each other.

Cons

You can't delete something that you've messed up whether it's an invoice or a deduction that's been created; you can only void.

Streamlining our overall operation. It saves time for the project managers, and for the bookkeeper.

Pros

As an owner, I like the high level overview of all projects, all accounting and the reporting available.

Cons

We are finding it a long learning curve. We've had Sage 100 Contractor almost a year now and still not 100% running on it.
The cost of additional licenses is high, and the required annual support cost must also be factored into a purchase decision. It has cost much more than just the original purchase price.
