Great alternative to HotDocs
I highly recommend Knackly. It is a very powerful tool that is a bit easier to use than its competitors.
PROSThe use of objects makes coding much easier than other programs I have used (HotDocs and Contract Express). The learning curve is not steep if you've coded documents before. The customer support has been exceptional. The initial set up comes with many variables and formulas pre-populated to make it very efficient to get up and running.
CONSBecause you use objects in the coding, it can be difficult to not have variables appear in the interview that should remain hidden.
Reasons for switching to Knackly
Cost was the biggest motivator. HotDocs was 4x the annual fee. We also used Contract Express (not an option to select) and didn't continue with that program because of its functionality and cost.

Knackly document automation
I've used the tool since its creation. The Knackly team is always available for questions and continues to improve the product. When Hotdocs priced itself out of the market for small businesses we reviewed all available replacements. Knackly was the best choice then and, in my opinion, remains the best choice.
PROSExcellent support, robust capability, reliable
CONSIt does not integrate with our case management tools. Integration using Zapier would be difficult due to the large number of variables in our document set. Knackly does integrate with other tools that we do not use.
Reason for choosing Knackly
All the reasons are already given. Cost, reliability, knowledge of the company and developer for working with them before.
Reasons for switching to Knackly
Made the cost outrages compared to prior cost.

Hotdocs or Knackly? it's an easy choice.
It's a small team of great people. When there is an issue, everyone cares enough to jump in and help resolve it.
PROSThe main feature that attracted us to Knackly was the API. Our software handles the "intake" and walks our clients through the decision-making process required in a divorce. From there, we needed to transmit the collected data - via API - into the preformatted documents using conditional logic to include/exclude certain sections and to fill out the "forms". Even though Knackly's API was in its early days, it was far superior to the others we looked at. (and it's getting better every day)
CONSEven though I praised the API above, it still has its weaknesses. But I have no doubt those weaknesses will be resolved.
Reason for choosing Knackly
API, personal touch, service plans, and price.

So far it is amazing
I'm still in the implementation phase but so far it is an amazing product. There is a little bit of a learning curve but the customer support is fabulous!
PROSThe automation is going to save a significant amount of time!
CONSThere is a little bit of a learning curve to making the conditions work.
Reason for choosing Knackly
Implementation on the other products was even more difficult.
Reasons for switching to Knackly
I was looking for a more robust automation software that my case management software just didn't provide.

Versatile Document Automation Tool
I've been able to do everything I have needed to do in Knackly so far. I like using the external client interviews and look forward to the coming improvements they will release.
PROSThis product is highly customizable. Before becoming a full-time attorney I was involved in the software industry, preparing automated documents of a sort for tax return software. Knackly has so far been capable of accomplishing any data automation task I have needed in a Word document. They seem to incorporate new features and improvements frequently, which I greatly appreciate.
CONSI hope they continue to build out their help articles/knowledge base. I reference these all the time, and there are still a few topics they could issue helpful reference materials on.

Great Product Will be Even Better Soon
This is a really great product. It is still being refined. Eventually this will be the product to use regardless. There are still some missing features that some people might miss but overall really great.
PROSHas many abilities that HotDocs lacks and it seems like a product that would be much easier to use especially if you are just starting to develop your templates or do not have overly complicated templates that can be easily converted.
CONSThe way our HotDocs was configured made the conversion process mostly a waste of time and money. Basically had to start from scratch.
