I am a chiropractor that practices in a town of 600+ people. So much of what works for larger practices, does not work here, or is too cost prohibitive. It took me a couple of years of searching for an EHR program that was not so complicated that I needed to hire a specialist to do my entry work, would meet my needs, but not bankrupt the office at the same time. I waited to purchase a program until I could find one that I was comfortable with. I am glad that I did, because Backchart has more than met those needs. I have the basic version of Backchart. I purchased it in September, 2012 and was able to participate in the last quarter of the 2012 CMS incentive program, starting in October 2012. I do not do the billing program with them, as I already was well-established in a previous program. However, I do the Electronic Health Record program. At the beginning, it was pretty overwhelming. But the instructors were very patient and scheduled their trainings so that it was not overwhelming. My staff and I were easily able to learn the procedures. It is a very forgiving software program, and most errors can be corrected easily. I especially like the macros and transfer of information options. Customer support is always excellent. I was able to attest in February 2013, and I qualified and received a CMS bonus in June of 2013. If I can meet the qualifications for the CMS incentive program-ANYONE CAN!

I have to admit that I dragged my feet when it came to Electronic Health Records. I looked at four other companies but rejected them for two reasons. First was the price, which was a combination of the initial purchase price, the cost to update, and the cost to have tech support. The second reason was the notes didn't sound or look like me. BackChart took some time to set up because we use macros. But every chart note, exam, and entry sounds like me because it is me! While BackChart has macros already in place, I was able to add my own. Now when I treat a patient, the notes reflect my care, not some generic verbiage that no one, including myself, is going to read. In addition to personal training, there are web videos which were especially helpful as I could watch them on my own time. It took me a month to train and personalize BackChart before I went live with patients. Honestly, because I am NOT a computer person, I thought the first 6 weeks were going to kill me. It took time to learn the program and get people entered in for the first time. Like any major change it disrupted the flow of the office for a while. But now, I have to say, I would never go back to how I did notes before. I am seeing more patients and spending less time on chart notes, while still producing quality, personalized notes. If you just want electronic records and aren't interested in qualifying for stimulus money, you can't go wrong with BackChart. Because it is stored in the cloud, I can finish up notes from home while my children are sleeping. This way I can attend their school functions and still get my work done. If you want to try for the stimulus money, then there is an easy pie graph that keeps track of your progress towards making those goals. This requires time to click on all the pertinent boxes, but I can't say it has improved patients quality of health. I am just documenting more of what I was already doing. So now instead of escorting patients to the front desk, I finish clicking away, and then I am ready for the next person. The only thing I don't like is the patient history on their portal site. It is way too cumbersome. I have stopped using it because patients didn't like it and it didn't work for me. If I could, I would like to pick and choose the pages from the history that do work for me, but for now, I can't. So I do my own paper history and gave up on BackChart's. My patients and I are much happier. Overall, I would encourage anyone to seriously consider BackChart. It has worked well for me.

Do not use this company! Ripoff

What a horrible company. Started billing me 4 months after a 1yr free trial eneded (we didn't want the software). Got a call from Leo Bronston in November swearing at my wife and called her a deadbeat for not paying as she explained we had bought a different software and no longer wanted Backchart. He then somehow got her personal credit card, which they said they had no payment on file in November (and why he said he was calling in the first place), so not sure if they have remote capabilities to get info from our computers. Anyways, long story short, he started billing us in November for $189 after she verbally cancelled on the phone call in november, and had also cancelled prior to the 1yr trial as well. Now they are refusing to respond to email or take our calls. Stay away... Stay far away from this company! I'm guessing thats also why they disabled reviews from being able to be posted. As for the actual program, its cumbersome, its constantly needing IT support, its clunky, the billing leaves a lot to be desired, and honestly if you have any amount of volume in your clinic, this isn't for you. This program is only good for startup clinics for the first year at best. We bought smart cloud and haven't looked back.

I have been in practice for eight years at New Hope Chiropractic. I have a small office setting with one doctor and two office assistants. We have been using BackChart for the last two years. Before I began using BackChart for my electronic health records, we were using traditional patient files and a separate billing software. In most situations, my office staff was being forced to enter data into the paper chart as well as the billing software. This was becoming redundant overtime and we were looking for new software that might be able to consolidate much of the front desk workload and also improve my note-taking efficiency to enhance my patients chart information. Our office had looked for quite some time for the right software and when we began our trial version I spoke with customer support. It immediately looked and felt as if it was going to be a great fit for our office. I can honestly say that I have not been disappointed by my initial instincts after two years of using BackChart. When we began utilizing BackChart, we spent some time becoming familiar with the system before we converted 100%. The customer support during this training was outstanding and it made the transition from our old paper records and previous billing software a very smooth and almost error-free transition. I believe that we did an initial training. About 6 to 8 hours spread out over a week of webinars. Following that, we were able to implement back chart very quickly. Throughout the implementation process we were also given continued support and if we had any questions they were answered directly through e-mail or phone, which is a great asset to have from any cloud-based company. Many companies will offer bells and whistles with their specific software, but if they lack customer support many of the tools that they might offer you is essentially useless. BackChart's customer support team from the beginning has been outstanding. At this point, after two years of using BackChart and becoming more familiar with it over time, and modifying my specific version through my own office needs, the customer support teams helps our office. I feel that the efficiency has improved significantly, the workload has been reduced significantly, and from a patient standpoint - the clinic flow has improved as well. In general, making the decision to utilize BackChart has been a great asset for our clinic, patients, and staff. Thank you!

BackChart is the way to go!

PROS

I like that it is easy to use without compromising the quality of the notes you take on a day-to-day basis. I use this program along with Kareo Practice Management, which interfaces nicely with BackChart. So when I finish a certain note, it generates a bill, and all I have to do is check it and send it over to Kareo (which is how I heard about BackChart). Kareo is a top-of-the-line medical software company, and it says a lot to me that they chose BackChart to interface with for Chiropractic. I've used a few software systems (that I was very disappointed with), and I am so happy I found BackChart. It's exactly what I was looking for in an EMR.

CONS

I honestly love this EMR. I'm a recent grad that has practiced on a few EMRs, and I tell you this is the best EMR for our profession by far. It's not too "clicky," but it's open enough to have varied notes (so they don't look the same). The use of macros and previous notes makes things quicker for tasks you perform repetitively on a day-to-day visit like CMTs.
