The most reliable solution for managing high-capacity wireless networks

There are solutions that allow companies to reduce installation costs, maintenance of an entire IT infrastructure for the provision of services such as wireless access points to schools, universities, concert halls and parks; with Cisco Meraki all these operating costs are reduced to the maximum expression and you have the guarantee that the equipment used are of the highest quality withstanding extreme environmental and physical conditions and still providing very stable connections, with this we can say that Cisco Meraki is a step ahead in terms of wireless connection.

PROS

Our company focused its eyes on Cisco Meraki for several important reasons such as: minimum infrastructure costs since the implementation does not require the physical installation of advanced equipment or data centers since all the infrastructure is in the cloud, this also eliminates maintenance costs that operationally demanded a considerable investment, secure and highly reliable wireless networks capable of supporting connections under the 802.11 ac standard in the order of Gbps, management from a single central platform and accessible from anywhere in the world.

CONS

The total dependence of the MR devices to the internet connection limits a little the management of our operative personnel that performs the repairs in all the zones, it is clear that for the cases where the internet connection fails, the local access to the access point is operative but when it is required to implement some access policy or special configurations in some points, the access through the central console by an administrator is obligatorily required.

A good solution for SMB

It's been good for the most part. It takes a while to find things as I came from a Cisco only shop but it is usable by people who have no network experience if you need someone like that to be able to vlan a port or something like that.

PROS

It is easier to install and maintain than most similar products. You can easily establish vpn's between owned devices with dynamic ip addresses.

CONS

Ran into an issue recently where you can not define access for Software VPN clients to networks that are vpn connected that are not Meraki.

Reasons for switching to Cisco Meraki

It came with this job. The last place I worked ran full blooded Cisco products which wile they have more features generally, are a lot more complicated to deploy.

Dated, Unreliable MDM

We started using Meraki a long time ago when there was a free option for the MDM, which was a great boon to the organization. We paid for support for a while when we needed it, which was reasonable at the time. Since then, the free program ended, and now the pricing is higher than most of the competitors. We could get over having to issue app push commands over and over when it was free, but having to pay a premium for one of the less reliable MDMs we've tested just wasn't in the cards, so we ended up switching. It's certainly not a horrible option, especially if you have an all-Meraki network and can manage everything in one place, but if you're just in it for the MDM like we were, there are better options out there, especially ones with smoother automation and ease of use.

PROS

Initially free, it implemented everything we needed for mobile device management for Apple devices.

CONS

With the free programs ended, Meraki became one of the most expensive options, which made its other flaws less tolerable. Commands to devices often fail with cryptic messages that require lots of manual retries.

PROS

It is very easy and intuitive to manage and support is always responsive and helpful

CONS

A lot of the needed log information is missing from the customer portal - you need to contact support for it. Does not play very nice with third-party firewalls for site-to-site VPNs

Meraki a reliable, stable and centrally managed network

Benefits of using a Meraki network are many, centralization of all devices, switches, firewall and in our case wifi access points, these have a stable radio signal emission power and ensuring the connection in the different wifi standart allowing to connect any kind of mobile devices from low to high range; in addition to having centralized management from the cloud that allows us to make adjustments to the settings from anywhere in the world with internet connection being reflected instantly on the monitored equipment, in conclusion a reliable network although a little expensive to implement but which is worth the investment.

PROS

Meraki has left a positive mark in our company due to its benefits and the experience that supports it, we have a large number of access points MR distributed in different areas of the city in parks, educational institutions, hospitals and each of them is monitored easily and remotely from the web; thanks to this we can analyze the capacity of connections, radio frequency channel in use, current wifi standard 802. 11 b/g/n/ac, also thanks to the power and stability in the signal emission of each MR we guarantee to the users a clean connection without interruptions that for some of the cases a stable connection is vital.

CONS

With the continuous expansion of our network also demands the inclusion of more MR devices, these are notoriously more expensive although comparing the cost/benefit ratio is worth the investment, however, one of the limitations for this type of network is its close dependence on the internet connection to perform advanced technical configurations on the devices, everything related to ACS configuration, MAC filtering (black or white list) as it does not allow such configurations locally limiting it to communication with the central administration.

A cloud infrastructure that optimizes our services

There are many benefits of taking our network infrastructure to the cloud, operating costs, software licensing, hardware maintenance, security systems and disaster protection are some of the costs that reduces an organization with such implementation, on the other hand, accessibility from anywhere in the world and manage the network offers very broad possibilities for any IT team, Cisco Meraki in its various products has given us the ability to manage a wireless ecosystem deployed in a fairly large geographical area with the administration from the cloud, this allows us to detect anomalies in real time, view bandwidth consumption in a timely manner and a large number of functions that makes the administrative work of the network a little easier.

PROS

Cisco Meraki has allowed us to evolve our network infrastructure and the way we interact with this, there are clear details that make this a highly balanced, sustainable and accessible network, due to its on cloud environment has reduced locative, operational and maintenance costs associated with the equipment installed on these sites; aspects to highlight within the Meraki environment I can mention their equipment (Access Point) in our case, these are robust equipment, resistant to different outdoor environments, easy configuration (plug and play) and administration in the remote console, in addition, provides a wide range of data and metrics that are a very detailed basis for the management by our IT team in all the deployment of the infrastructure, Its clear and intuitive console has the functions at hand offering very fast possibilities to configure parameters such as SSID, MAC filtering (white and black list), bandwidth management either by SSID or by users, WEB content filtering, among others, possibilities like these make Cisco Meraki a very strong ally in our organization.

CONS

It should take into account the number of devices implemented in the network as it depends on the number of licenses to hire, although their individual cost is a bit high if you must take into account that this value is associated with some benefits of great help as some devices have a lifetime warranty while licensing is active, although in our cases the Access Point does not have this benefit I can guarantee that such equipment have a very striking performance in addition to withstand extreme operating conditions, so no negative comments so far I do not have.

Excellent solution for the management, supervision and administration of networks in the cloud.

Cisco Meraki allowed us to manage and monitor securely and from the cloud about 60 access points that we have located in different specific areas of the city through a central console and in the same way we can solve in a short time any problems that may arise without the need to have to move our technicians to solve them, the user experience is really positive and beneficial.

PROS

We can easily configure, manage and monitor our free WIFI networks from a single panel 100% in the cloud, it is easy to add wireless access points to the central panel and exercise control, cisco Meraki allows me to regulate the bandwidth to provide, either by SSID, IP, among others, I can restrict access to specific pages, encrypt networks (AES, WPA, WPA-PSK, etc); our company provides a free service of WiFi Zones located in different parts of the city in parks, shopping malls and other common areas through access point MR18. The support provided is timely and efficient in any circumstance, they respond in a very short time to our requests; I like the advanced security features provided, last but not least, Cisco Meraki provides a very intuitive and modern user interface, in which you can navigate smoothly.

CONS

The purchase price of the equipment and licenses is expensive compared to other competing products but it is well worth the investment as the benefits are many.

Secure and centralized management of your access points

Cisco Meraki has allowed our team to manage in a comfortable, proactive and dynamic way our wireless infrastructure (access points); this allows us to quickly configure all kinds of policies either access or security and we have the guarantee of Cisco technical support which have not provided timely assistance when presenting physical difficulties or any specific configuration on any of the devices deployed, in short a tool that is worth using if you want to have a solid infrastructure and ensuring high levels of service to customers.

PROS

There are several details for which Cisco Meraki has greatly facilitated our daily work in terms of installation, management and monitoring of access points deployed in remote sites of our customers and is the ease of implementation; it may sound routine but this work is as simple as plug and play, just physically connect the element and in a few minutes the autodiscovery function shows the element to be monitored and parameterized according to customer needs (SSID, Encryption, MAC Filtering, Content Policies, etc).

CONS

There are more benefits than negative points, although I can indicate that the implementation is expensive in its licensing, perhaps for small and medium organizations it would be complex due to the high cost of licenses and equipment.

Long Time Meraki Evangelist

Overall am happy with the products and services, their customer service in particuar has always gone above and beyond when it was needed.

PROS

I have been utilizing Meraki from before they were acquired by Cisco, and I believe the product has only gotten better. The ease of management and ability to oversee multiple locations, on top of a plethora of features any SMB would need has made me happy in my continued use of their products. The notifications of connection loss and the ability to remote configure devices is unparalleled in my experience.

CONS

I do believe their pricing is quiet high, along side a license model that would brick your device if you no longer pay for it does leave a sour taste in some mouths, I've also found it to be lacking in some granular firewall policies compared to more purpose built products such as Juniper's firewalls.

Meraki for MDM and Wireless

Overall we're very happy. Deployments are easy and not having to support controllers has been helpful, although controller based systems do have their advantages. MDM has helped us maintain better control and tracking over our mobile assets.

PROS

the ease of use is great. Deployment is straight forward for Meraki devices. MDM management is not extremely intuitive, but in fairness this is our first MDM product. Consoles are easy to navigate. For the price it is an effective product.

CONS

Licensing is a bit confusing, Menu in the management console could use a little improvement, more streamlined, reporting is very lacking.

Cisco Meraki is Intelligent Simplicity

It has been one of the best experience ever. Switching from Blue (Cisco Traditional) or any other vendor to Green (Cisco Meraki) has been seamless. But then again, it will depend on your context.

PROS

The ease of deployment. You can be up and running (with policies defined) withing minutes!

CONS

Once configured, the policies takes about a minute or too to be take effect. I believe this depends on your own internet connectivity as well. Also, the native windows vpn client is buggy but it has announced that Cisco Anyconnect Client will soon be compatible with Cisco Meraki VPN Services!

Easy to manage and deploy

Overall network managing is quite good. It's easy to setup new location. Cloud managment makes it easy to deploy and manage. Single pane of glass gives ability to see all location at one and we can make changes. Due to price we limit use only to routers and AP co i can't comment on MDM, switches and other meraki products.

PROS

It's ideal to many locations with often changing IP address. It makes managing very easy. We can basically send router not configured and it will connect to cloud and setup configuration very fast. Aut-VPN is great in cisco meraki. It just works.

CONS

Price for convenience is very high. That's main thing that may discourage someone to purchase this product. Copying configuration to different router is bit tricky in UI.

Powerful product in combination with Meraki hardware

Overall a brilliant product and system, there is a reason we have been using the Meraki products for the past 8 years.

PROS

The ability to remotely manager and monitor the network remotely has significantly cut down on support call outs and requests among our clients. Everything on the network is visible from the moment traffic hits the WAN to the clients machine. The tools for diagnosing and checking network issues are amazing. As well as the granularity of the information displayed to the ability to 'micro manage' the network.

CONS

Not so much an issue with the software , but the cost of licenses and hardware can be pretty steep especially if you replace all the network devices.

PROS

1) Consolidated management of all of our Meraki devices at different location. 2) You can use same configuration template for all or multiple locations. 3) Cisco meraki's keeping up with new vulnerability game is really good. 4) You can use MX devices for SD-WAN which is much more simpler than regular Cisco CLI devices.

CONS

1) If you are using template based deployment then your guest ambassador account can't delete user accounts for wireless. 2) Like many other cloud solution, there is a lack of granularity & fear of compromise.

Meraki - easy to use for the Network administrator

Overall, I would choose Meraki again. The costs are evened out by not needing to have a network engineer on staff if you have a good understanding of your network. Not for the enterprise, but small to medium business with a Network Administrator would benefit greatly with all the features you get with their products.

PROS

I didn't have to use CLI to make any configurations. The GUI is very intuitive and easy to navigate. The built-in net flow allowed me to catch a ransomware attack by providing me the data usage and source/destination information. Quickly isolated the offending device and got it unplugged.

CONS

Price. You purchase the hardware, then also have to license each device. This makes for a pretty expensive network appliance over time.

Reasons for switching to Cisco Meraki

Easy of use and reputation. No Network engineer on staff.

CONS

Meraki AP Management

My overall experience has been good with Cisco Meraki. We utilize this network product on a campus where the switches aren't configured the same as other campuses.

PROS

The thing I like most about Cisco Meraki is that it had a good "plug & play" usability. I like that I don't have to configure each AP. I can simply plug the AP into an internet connection, and it will begin broadcasting the WiFi network.

CONS

The thing I like least about Cisco Meraki is that it is sometimes difficult to find where to go to apply certain networks to APs. The interface of the dashboard could use a little updating.
