The best investment for our nonprofit arts organization!

"Excellent response" and "solution-driven" are terms that describe our aggregate experience with ACC staff and developers. Oregon Society of Artists is unique in the way it handles class and workshop registrations, exhibit entries, and instructor compensation, so it has been necessary for the software to be adapted to our needs by discovering/implementing many "unique-to-us" business rules. There have been moments along the way that were frustrating for us and for ACC's people, but ultimately we've found ACC staff and developers to be good partners who are responsive to our needs and willing to find solutions that really work for us.

PROS

Art Center Canvas (ACC) successfully addresses the complex needs of Oregon Society of Artists, with the most significant impact being the enormous reduction of daily staff hours spent on registrations for classes and workshops and entries for exhibits.

CONS

Depending upon a user's level of experience or comfort learning/navigating within new software, some may find the interface to be non-intuitive. In our office we've found that the learning curve can be quite steep for some key users.

Reason for choosing Art Center Canvas

Affordability was the key factor. We are a 93-year-old regional arts nonprofit going through what is most likely the most critical growth period in our history. Our current budget is very tight and we needed to change the way we were doing business in order to keep up with our intense growth in programming and development needs. Art Center Canvas was able to deliver big, necessary solutions to change the way we do business, and did so at a very reasonable price point we could afford.

The Clay Studio review

We have relied upon Art Center Canvas (ACC) for online class registrations, ticketing, membership and donor development for more than 6 years. Over that time ACC has added features and functionality that responded to our growing needs to reach our community of students, artists and ceramic enthusiasts. Our ability to provide input on new features and suggest improvements to streamline our operations has helped us to scale our operations with our growth. In 2018, we made the decision to improve our online shopping of ceramic artwork from nearly 150 artists across the U.S. We shopped around for software that could effectively process online gallery sales. ACC and their support team was our best option. We trust ACC's level of support and responsiveness to our center's needs. It was a major project with considerable team work among our web developers, ACC and staff. We are proud of our online showcase of the art and craft of clay with the seamless online processing from ACC.

PROS

I like having all of the data and account history in one place. We have multiple programs and enter point to our organization and it is great to see how individuals are interacting with our organization and easy to track.

CONS

The software has a few glitches when using a Mac computer but is continually improving.

Over promised; under delivered

This company seems to forget that the client is the customer. Phone calls, emails are responded to with what we perceive as aggression and a feeling that we have been an annoyance. (However, I will note that the company reps have been quick to respond during urgent issues, even if outside of business hours.) Never have we felt that they had our (the customer) interest at heart. While not the most costly product, the price is paid in huge staff hours trying to create and learn workarounds to overcome the MANY challenges presented by this over promised product.

PROS

Originally, we were sold on the suggestion that we could customize reporting. However, in reality, this customization temptation results in too many options without clarity then landing with conflicting data in the reports.

CONS

It is not intuitive at all. Whether as an employee user or a for our members and students, the functionality of the product is confusing at best. Our longest tenured employees still regularly stumble upon confusing action, reports, etc. The learning curve is so long that there is no mastering the product.

Krasl has been a valued customer for 6 years, and their custom reporting needs are important to us. We integrate with a number of reporting solutions. Recently in March of this year, we added JReport as an integrated report engine and provided live training. We also continue to offer Tableau as a premium add-on. Not every client elects to use these advanced reporting tools. We have always filled the gap by customizing reports or building new reports to meet a center's requirements with little or no additional charge. It is difficult to hear that we don't support Krasl's interests. We recently spent several weeks (at no charge) working with Krasl to help resolve an issue they had with a third-party developer that was impacting their custom website. Those interactions were often by phone, and we thought cordial and informative. At the end, Krasl expressed their gratitude for our helpfulness when their third-party developer would not help.

Good - they are responsive and working to improve their offerings routinely. Admittedly, I am new to ACC so am not entirely proficient in its functionalities, however, I am hoping their responsiveness is indiciative of improvements being made to the software.

PROS

The customer support is excellent - I routinely receive very timely assistance with issues reported. This software covers a great breadth of functionality from class registration to exhibition registration to ticket sales.

CONS

There appear to be frequent glitches in the software that require customer support.

The most customizable I've ever seen.

My overall experience with with Art Center Canvas has been very positive. The creator and support staff have always been receptive any issues, new ideas and changes that have come along through the course of the ever changing needs of our community art center.

PROS

The flexibilty of use and the sheer volume of features that it is capable of handling.

CONS

It's not always the most forgiving in fixing mistakes of human error

We have found Art Canvas to be the ideal customer management vehicle for our purposes. Support is very reactive to our needs.

There are features in this program that we do not need or use, but that is really not a complaint...we just don't use them

PROS

I loved that I could update the registration pages immediately. For example, if I saw I made a typo in a class description, I could go to the class/activity scheduling section, fix the mistake, and saw it change right away on the front end.

CONS

Refunding has caused me the most amount of hassle.

We used to have to keep track of registrations, sales and donations with different programs. Now we can keep track of it all in one. Now I can see all the activity for a patron in one place.

PROS

I am very happy with the support as we are learning how to use the software and making changes to fit our needs. My requests are answered promptly and the Help Chatline is great.

CONS

I wish I could drill down to the transactions from the reports.

Quality and user friendliness

General happiness in having this product. I recommend it to some friends because of the need to have something like this in the business world.

PROS

The product is very fun to use, it has many options. When you get the hang of working with this product, you practically forget about the others. For my business, it was extremely useful, as it opened the door to innovation and news.

CONS

In the beginning, I didn't have many facilities to develop, only after some studies and research that I found it easy.

Pass the Buck

Business problems are not being solved. I'm waiting for the day when we can kick Art Center Canvas to the curb. Most recently we have encountered issues with customers being charged multiple times because a 'patch' had not been installed correctly to stop multiple transactions from occuring. We have encountered issues while uploading classes that didn't occur in the past. ACC rep pass the buck and do not respond to postings (not chat) asking for help. I am frustrated with the system everyday.

PROS

That it handles everything: classes, memberships, gift shop sales and donations.

CONS

The customer service experience when a problem comes up. This happens on a weekly basis. Usually, responses include naming the customer as at fault.

Thank you for allowing us to respond to the issues raised. In the example cited, we immediately investigated the issue, corrected the online customer's error and added steps to prevent a recurrence. An online customer had clicked repeatedly on the Pay button. Support requests requiring a customer fix are given the highest priority. We will work to have clearer online communication to ensure you know we are working on an issue and it is being resolved. Thank you for agreeing since your review that we were incorrectly blamed for the uploading class issue. We spent a considerable amount of time in March and April (at no charge to Krasl) investigating this issue that arose after Krasl's web designer engaged a third-party developer to display classes on your web site. A problem was found in the third-party developer's code. Krasl thanked us for helping and documenting a work-around for this issue, until they could address their custom website with the third-party developer.
