Great Solution for the SMB and Remote Office Market

PROS

Not technically "software", the Adtran 7100 is a bespoke platform for running the Adtran Operating System (AOS). AOS provides a feature-rich call control platform and via integration with the 7100, a full featured all-in-one platform for delivering voice services. The 7100 combines a router with VPN capability and swappable interface modules, a 24 port layer 2/3 POE switch, and a feature rich PBX into a 1U chassis that is easy to deploy and maintain. While the platform can scale up to 100 users by adding additional switching capacity, the sweet spot is for Internet connected small and remote offices with VPN connectivity requirements and it makes a perfect office in a box solution at a fraction of the cost of other solutions. Perfect applications scenarios are retail stores, construction trailers, fast food/quick service, banking, and any other scenario where you require an easily deployable solution for multiple locations. The 7100 can be quickly integrated into a corporate PBX using SIP trunks to allow toll bypass and a simplified dial plan. Other great features: The GUI is easy to use and allows you to control most of the functionality that is available in the CLI. Powerful voice quality and service monitoring tools (VQM) are included. In addition to supporting native Adtran endpoints, there is fairly broad support for industry standard Polycom phones.

CONS

It is an all-in-one solution . . . while this is a great selling point, it is also a single point of failure. Routing, switching, and telephony all resides in the same operating space so issues that are impactful to one may be to others as well. While the AOS CLI is syntactically close to Cisco IOS, it is just different enough that you will find it frustrating if you are a Cisco CLI jockey. Setup and configuration is about as simple as it gets, but you will be dealing with technical subjects so an understanding of networking and telephony is recommended. Unheard of 5 year warranty.
