Layer Your Data

Overall, great experience with the software and their support team.

PROS

I come from a BIM manager background, so I love the ease of use and flexibility to compose your data how you need it. Adding PowerBi over the top of this data should be icing on the cake. Their support has been fantasic as well.

CONS

I would really like to see a smooth export...edit...import process with excel. I have this in Revit with DiRoots, AVAIL, and other "spreadsheet link" add-ons.

Reason for choosing Layer

Cost, flexibility, and ease of use are the big factors that we considered when evaluating this software for our needs. Smaller firms need to get creative with their dollar usage on software and I think Layer is a good fit for many firms.

Reasons for switching to Layer

Airtable had an error while transferring data and it corrupted our data. Their support was completely unresponsive. Sales also said their hands where tied and could not help us.

You will love it

The implementation in our office went very smoothly. It felt very intuitive for everyone. It was the perfect solution.

PROS

Previously, we had to utilize multiple software tools to achieve the desired outcome. Excel lacked visual clarity due to the absence of images, and transferring data to InDesign required an excessive number of steps.Layer is the solution for this.

CONS

Cheaper version for people who are not using revit.

Reasons for switching to Layer

It couldn't be that we were the only ones with this problem, so we started searching and luckily we found the perfect solution.

Layer Review

Without Layer, the data collection process for our project would have drastically increased. Layer kept our photos and PDFs all in one place, making for a much simpler process in generating deliverable reports.

PROS

Customer service was very responsive and receptive. The PDFs we imported allowed us to link photos to specific locations, cutting down on time spent trying to identify location of photos across team members. The fields are very customizable, allowing for a variety of different types of projects. The report function was easy to use and customize. All files are located in one project.

CONS

As the project progressed, speed of the website dipped with more and more files being added. However, customer service was quick to provide solutions. Saving backup files required us to have the team at Layer archive it for us. Layer limits the number of photos per element to 12. Some instances may require more.

Saves me hours

Customer support has been wonderful and responsive. The programming team has been responsive to suggestions to improve the application.

PROS

The ability to customize forms and build out data collection in a way that suits a project's needs.

CONS

Depending on how much data (in my case PHOTOS) you collect you may need product support to run a backup and download the data.

Reasons for switching to Layer

I've not found an application that supports the collection of information and photos in a fully integrated and coordinated manner. The integration and the ability to download information in multiple formats save time formating and analyzing field information. And the bonus is that the information can be imported into Revit, which saves tedious and time-consuming data entry of field information.

Layer - 1 year road test

Without Layer, my company would not be able to produce the highly accurate models and reports needed and allow for the company to maximise working efficiencies.

PROS

It’s ease of access, it’s functionality, it’s a reliable tool that doesn’t crash and such a positive team of developers who are always looking to improve Layer based on customer feedback

CONS

There isn’t anything particularly negative - any gremlins (when found) are quickly dealt with. Some features aren’t fully available yet - which can be mildly frustrating, but we know that they are being worked on and when available will add to the positive experience of being a Layer user.

My layer review

PROS

The integration with Revit is most useful along with the ability to quickly take notes and have them available to the project team.

CONS

It is setting up projects with our firm's standard Layer tools is not user friendly as best as I can tell so far. The lack of notifications of project updates, tasks due, etc. is a drawback for our use. The lack of a dedicated chat or communication function is missing also.
