About Bitbucket

Bitbucket is a collaborative Git solution that allows users to review codes with pull requests. Users can have discussions with coders in the source code with inline comments. The software provides a multi-deployment option as it can be hosted in the cloud or on-premise. Configuration as code enables developers to manage their own delivery workflows. Users can configure Bitbucket pipelines by adding a bitbucket-pipelines.yml file to the root of a repository. Bitbucket pipelines show build statuses automatically on branches, commits and pull requests. Branch permissions provide limited access controls to team members, so that only users with knowledge of editing codes can make changes to the code. Users can analyze the changes in repositories with unified or side-by-si...

Easily manage multiple private projects within a team

Overall I'm pretty satisfied with Bitbucket. Once again I'd like to highlight the fact that giving private repositories was a blessing for early-stage startups who keeps an eye on every $$ spent. The integrations with products like JIRA just make it an excellent choice over any other competitor products.

PROS

I liked the option of creating private repositories for free in Bitbucket. Github has also started giving this now but Bitbucket is a pioneer in this. The team collaboration is excellent having complete visibility of individuals. JIRA integration is also very powerful. Developers can easily mark the task completed from one place itself.

CONS

Small things like solving merge conflicts from the UI would help senior engineers not to go through the IDE. It also gets slow at a certain point. It takes a lot of time in merging the conflicts.

Reason for choosing Bitbucket

At that time, Bitbucket was providing private repositories for free whereas GitHub was charging $$.

An easy and fast way to keep track of your elements and their modifications.

Bitbucket is a very useful version control tool, easy to master and with many useful tools that will help you speed up your work, of course it has certain shortcomings that could be improved over time, but at the end of the day it is a tool very useful. From the most basic to the most complex options, you will find them extremely useful in your day to day work to get ahead.

PROS

Bitbucket has a very friendly interface that is easy to understand and understand, it allows you to maintain control and order of all your elements and keep track of each modification that was made and by whom said modification was made. It allows you to establish different types of permissions as necessary to have a better control of who can perform what actions within the repositories that are created in bitbucket. Once you get familiar with the tool, everything is easy to do and locate any option you are looking for to carry out your tasks.

CONS

Sometimes the way it provides you to search within each repository can be somewhat cumbersome, requiring you to write the exact name of the component you may be looking for in order to show you a result, making the searches more strenuous since you must know the exact name of the component or it will be very difficult to find it. In some cases, when versioning certain changes, Bitbucket interprets them as a total change within the component and shows as if the file was being completely modified even if you are only modifying some lines of code.

Reasons for switching to Bitbucket

The enterprise version of GitHub was way more expensive than Bitbucket enterprise version.

Great tool for source code repository

Very simple to set up and use, BitBucket has all the features you need to handle your source code in a professional way. Very useful also the integration with many other services and the possibility of using it as the ultimate CI/CD platform for your team.

PROS

BitBucket is very user-friendly and lets you quickly create a repository for source code management. Great integration with other useful Atlassian tools such as Jira.

CONS

Advanced paid plans can become very expensive if you have many users,

Good tool for Source Code Management

Bitbucket it's a quite good tool for source management, in last years a basic CI/CD with pipelines and integrations with K8S was introduced but it's not really complete.

PROS

I like integrations with external tools and the possibility to organize repositories into Projects.

CONS

A dedicated tool for graph of branches/commit is a missing critical feature.

Reason for choosing Bitbucket

At the moment of choice, some years ago, Bitbucket was better than other tools.

Reasons for switching to Bitbucket

Minor costs
