Pros

I greatly appreciate the features (analytical, operational, functional) of Marketo Marketing Automation Software. It is so helpful for streamlining our internal marketing/communications workflows at my non-profit organization for which I am the Director of Advancement/Admissions. I also love the Marketo Nation community forum and product documentation. Very good.

Cons

I'm not too fond of having to pay a lot extra for live support, considering how expensive the tool is to begin with.

Good for large businesses with a well-funded marketing department.

Pros

Powerful if you know what you're doing. But figuring it out takes a really long time. One company I worked for had to hire an entire employee just to manage Marketo.

Cons

See above: one company I worked for had to hire an entire employee JUST to manage Marketo. Also fairly expensive.

Pros

Marketo is one of the better marketing automation software titles I have used. It took me longer than it probably should have to get used to the user interface and processes, but once I was up to speed, I was glad I had spent the time. It made email marketing campaigns easy, and our campaigns got better results than from our previous use of other software.

Cons

I found Marketo a little difficult to learn at first, even though my efforts were well worth it. I would like to see Marketo spend a little more time creating a platform for learning the functionality and UI.

Value for Money

After a multi-month search for a new marketing automation solution, our team settled on three finalists: Marketo, IBM/SilverPop and Adobe Campaign. While all three platforms provided excellent high-end functionality, we ultimately went with Marketo due to the perceived ease of use and out-of-the-box functionality. We were not disappointed.

Pros

Our team was able to get Marketo up and running in 15 days to send emails. This is NOT a standard timeframe, and we have a dedicated and very motivated team.
Service and training to date have been excellent.

Cons

If you have a many-many database, think carefully and have good internal conversations before selecting Marketo. We moved from ExactTarget to Marketo, and discovered multiple challenges with our data structure during and after implementation. Long-term, we expect this to be solved with the implementation of a new CRM solution, but it has caused some short-term growing pains.

Advice to Others

Definitely, go for the on-site training if you can afford it. Having someone available to physically walk your teams through the new processes allowed users to get up to speed much more quickly and have more confidence in a short span of time.

Marketo is a robust marketing automation platform. During the two years that I have been using Marketo, I have become a Marketo Certified Expert, a Marketo User Group Leader and a Marketo Champion. It's easy to use and adapt, even coming from another MA platform. The tech stack that you can intertwine with Marketo is just about anything you could want or need. Integration with other plug-ins is simple and easy to set up. One of the biggest advantages of Marketo is the Community (Marketing Nation!) of users that help each other out with best practices, problems, troubleshooting, etc. Marketo is a fantastic product out of the box and I'm quickly learning that there is always new tech to plug in and an unlimited potential to grow.

Pros

Easy to use

Community of users

Cons

Can be slow at times

Advice to Others

Overall Marketo is a fantastic marketing automation platform and I would recommend it to anyone in the market.

Marketo is the premier solution for marketing automation

Ease-of-use

Value for Money

Marketo was the clear winner when first looking at marketing automation solutions. The robust software certainly met our needs at the time, but also offered features we were very new too. This allowed us to evolve our marketing processes and streamline certain aspects of it. Marketo will take a few months to learn the basics, and even then you will find yourself learning new things even years later. With the valuable resources Marketo offers, they set you up for success.

Pros

- Customize-able. You can certainly find a way to accomplish any marketing task.
- The Community is a tremendous resource to learn and Certification is available to validate your proficiency.

Cons

- Support can take a few days to resolve issues.
- Navigation and accessibility can be a bit earlier, (ex. cannot run “Lead Actions” from smart campaign’s results tab, program’s member's tab, or Lead Details page)

Advice to Others

- Get Sales involved in the lead scoring process so you can collaborate on what constitutes the warmest leads to send to them.
- Set aside adequate time for the implementation. Be prepared to spend several hours a day learning the solution. There is a steep learning curve with Marketo, but that is because it is unlike other solutions.

I've had a good experience with Marketo over the past 5 years. They continue to improve and grow their product and it has been flexible enough as a platform for our organizational needs.

Pros

Cons

Some of the role out of the new functionality has been challenging for us in terms of what we expected and what was delivered.

Advice to Others

You need dedicated staff that truly understand the ins and outs of the platform to have the most success. It's easier to train a few people on how to use it than to try to roll it out to a full department.

Our team has been using Marketo, since before I stepped into my current role 3 years ago. While there was a steep learning curve at first, the capabilities are endless, the reporting seamless, and there is always a way to get answers whether through their great support team or the vast community of users they have built. The integrations with other MarTech vendors like Vidyard and PFL have allowed us to be creative with campaigns while tying all interactions together for a holistic view of each lead on their customer journey. Our marketing team seems to be getting leaner by the day, but Marketo has kept our agile and adaptable while keeping our work measurable and meaningful to our overall organization... and that has made all the difference.

Pros

Easy integrations with launch point. Helpful content-rich community structure.

Cons

Steep learning curve. RTP still seems very primitive in code capacity.

Advice to Others

Marketo is a significant investment. Get the most value from the tool by utilizing all they offer and integrating your martech stack throughout.

Value for Money

As someone who works in sales operations, I was always intrigued with what happens to a lead outside of the normal sales cycle. I was able to get approval for training for Marketo and with my knowledge in Salesforce (admin certified), bridging the gap between both systems have been a game changer for our organization. I have really been able to take advantage of how a lead is marketed and nurtured to, so that when the lead is ready to engage with sales, they are a bit more qualified, making sales conversations easier and faster. We've implemented lead scoring, different nurture programs, drip campaigns, automated lead routing based on assigned quota, properly tagged leads based on what channel they've come from...I could go on and on. I love Marketo and I love what it can do alongside Salesforce.

Pros

The Marketo widget in Salesforce is great. It lets a seller know exactly what pages they visited on your website, which emails they opened, what they've downloaded, including dates and timestamps. This REALLY helps a seller prepare for an initial call and sets them up for success. Marketo's integration with Salesforce is great and because I was already Salesforce certified, it was pretty easy for me to learn Marketo.

Cons

It can be a bit slow to do some stuff in Marketo, it's not as fast as Salesforce.

Marketo is a very powerful content marketing tool, and this can help publishers solve their content consumption question. If you need to know who in your subscription file is ready, engaging with what specific types of content, when, then Marketo can help you answer these questions. When moving to Marketo as a publisher, within the first year we were able to see our whitepaper, ebook, webcast, and site traffic increase significantly, and continue to grow into year two of the investment. It is a really powerful tool and connects to some amazing partnering technologies that can only improve your audience development and content amplification efforts.

Operationally and Organizationally Powerful

Value for Money

Measuring movement and success through specific programs is very helpful. On a very basic level, looking at acquisition program and a lead source is very helpful. We have been able to develop much better reporting for our executives and show them ROI from the Marketing team.

From an operational standpoint, the organization is so much better than it has been in the past. It's easy to know where to pull data from and things can get done much quicker with templates.

Pros

Everything can be organized the way that works for our team. There are very few limits to the way we can set up programs and we are able to customize fields, analytics, etc to tell us whatever it is we need to know. We've used other systems (like HubSpot) and they are not nearly as flexible.

I also LOVE the Marketo Community. We've learned a lot from our peers in different discussions.

Cons

Sometimes there are too many options and not enough guidance on best practices. Marketo has documentation on different products, but they don't tell me WHY I might want to use a specific feature, just how I would go about doing so.

Advice to Others

Utilize Community and Marketo Product Docs. Don't stop asking questions as there are always other people who are either struggling with the same challenges or have a solution for your challenge.

Also, take the time to mess around and learn the product. It does take time, but you will greatly benefit from playing around with the different program types, naming conventions, workflows, etc.

I've used it for about 4 years now and counting. I have tried several other automation platforms but nothing compares in terms of the functionality Marketo provides.

Pros

-Using tokens to switch content out easily
-Ease of use once you get the hang of it
-History that allows you to feel 'safe'
-Data is available and doesn't disappear

Cons

-Glitches
-Bandaids

Advice to Others

Get an implementation partner and consultant/vendor since Marketo support is pretty much useless for information that you cannot find on the web itself.

A powerful platform if you truly understand marketing automation

Value for Money

I've used Marketo both as a brand side manager and as a consultant on the agency side. It is incredibly powerful and can be used in almost any business environment. From traditional b2b to education to publishing. It can be the central part of any martech stack if leveraged appropriately with enough supporting knowledge.

No other MA platform will match the SFDC integration (yes, including SFMC) which makes it a no-brainer for any SFDC customer truly investing in MA. The partner community is vast with integrations to do almost anything you need. And, of course, the marketing piece is insanely customizable to the customer journey.

Pros

- the flexibility
- the powerful
- integrations
- reporting capabilities

Cons

- speed
- complexity (also a major pro)
- time to train

Advice to Others

Make sure you have a knowledgeable team led by an MCC (not MCE, and actual consultant) or hire an agency to do your implementation. Don't hire Marketo Professional Services, their approach is too cookie cutter. Get connected with one of their implementation partners (LeadMD, Fathom Marketing, or Elixiter).

Most powerful and usable marketing automation solution

Ease-of-use

Functionality

Customer Support

Value for Money

I've used Marketo and the other two large marketing automation tools over the last 7 years. All the platforms are valuable, but where Marketo really stands above the rest is in its rich feature sets and ease-of-use. It also has a fabulous user community, the best that I've seen of any software solution. The very active and helpful user community even rivals that of Salesforce CRM, and S CRM has a LOT more users in their community. I do a fair amount of side consulting, and whenever I'm making recommendations for marketing automation software I first recommend Marketo.

Pros

1. Super feature rich.
2. Very scalable - I can clone and launch new programs, webinars, nurturing drip campaigns, etc. very quickly.
3. Best user community around.

Cons

While the user community is an excellent resource for finding solutions to problems you may run into, I don't feel like their support is as fabulous as the rest of the solution. While support is good, it's not amazing - and amazing is something I've come to expect from Marketo.

Advice to Others

Shop around and find the solution that best fits your needs, but also don't be swayed into getting a really cheap solution, because you get what you pay for and it won't be able to scale up with your company's growth. Marketo can. At my current employer, we were using one of the other leading marketing automation solutions and had to upgrade to Marketo. Implementing Marketo is not bad, but it still requires a fair amount of setup and work, so I'd recommend going with the right solution the first time.

I work with Marketo for most of my day. Recently, I have run into a few Marketo quirks that have made my job more difficult. One is that all triggers are used as "OR" instead of "AND". Overall, Marketo is likely the benchmark in marketing automation technology. The software itself is fully featured and almost limitless in its potential. Where other competitive packages may promise the functionality of what Marketo offers, they often fail to truly deliver. On the flip side, one of Marketo's best benefits (its seemingly limitless potential), can also be overwhelming for more novice marketing users, making it a challenge to implement at scale. Looking back, our organization was not at a place where implementing a marketing automation solution at the enterprise level was set up to be successful and, in hindsight, I would have appreciated the folks at Marketo recognizing this and advising a different course of action. Of course, this is not an indictment of the Marketo platform itself and for companies with a detailed plan and roadmap for long-term success will be thrilled with what Marketo has to offer.

The engagement program of the tool is great to work with. It moves potential customers through the funnel really well. But, Marketo tries to gouge you for advanced reporting, etc. The basic reporting is ok, but won't tell you all that much if you want to dig deeper. Therefore, you have to buy more. Also the documentation isn't that great and I have to find other sources to help accomplish things inside Marketo. Building landing pages isn't very intuitive either.

Pros

Engagement program works well. Getting a simple engagement program up and running isn't difficult. Cloning programs so that you don't have to rebuild another one is great. Marketo community is very supportive.

Cons

Building landing pages. Having to pay a lot more money to add additional functionality that is built into other platforms. Basic reporting isn't all that great.

I used Marketo as a lead generation manager at the first startup (15 person company) I worked at. I was the primary tool evaluator, and chose it over Pardot and Hubspot, because our focus was on outbound emailing (Hubspot is not) and we needed a high level of customizability/flexibility (2 years ago I found that Pardot was not flexible enough). Marketo has its own language and way of doing things. It really required a full training to get up and running, but once I did that I found it straightforward to use. The interface is clunky and not beautiful, but the functionality is really high. The highest risk with using Marketo is not keeping careful track of potentially conflicting programs. Staying organized and consistent is REALLY important. Overall, I like it and everything it could do, but similar to other "older" SaaS tools, I really wish they would overhaul their interface/UX to make it more streamlined and modern.

Marketo is very slow, super frustrating, it almost overshadows the functionality. But the mail deliverability is satisfactory and the platform provides what we need. Sorry for the brevity, I just needed to get this off my chest and I feel much bettter.

Pros

It asks me for the organization name so I can't act a fool for Starbucks gift cards

Cons

Your "Tell me abut yourself" form asks for a lot, though it is optional, so I can't stay mad at you

Overall, Marketo can get the job done and is built for B2B but there is better software if you're looking for more than just MA

Pros

It has a great integration with SFDC and its pretty straight forward to implement lead scoring, forms on our website, building campaigns/programs.

Cons

The UI is clunky (could really do with a re-design), their support team is knowledgeable but we can't call in and we need to outsource custom scripting to send more granular and dynamic emails.

Marketo can handle all our B2B needs with some caveats. It has a great integration with SFDC and its pretty straight forward to implement lead scoring, forms on our website, building campaigns/programs.

Marketo is a really great software with lots of smooth functionality. However, HubSpot has been able to align with my overall business needs on a more consistent basis.

Marketo has great functionality in email marketing but lacks predictive analytics capabilities as well as tracking of anonymous visitors.
