Schoology Software

Schoology is a cloud-based learning management solution specializing in curriculum management, course instruction and system-wide resource sharing and collaboration.

Users can upload course content and assignments into the database to create their website, which is hosted by the vendor. From there, dynamic content creation tools and a rich text editor allows for the creation of content and lessons.

HTML and CSS tools are also available to keep lessons as visually simple or complex as desired. From the website, each student’s profile can be viewed to gauge progress. Color-coded workload thresholds will show if any students are overloaded.

With web-based and native apps for iOS, Android and Kindle devices, Schoology allows students and faculty to collaborate and learn from anywhere. From system-wide district announcements to messages with customizable roles and permissions, users can access only the tools they need.

Other capabilities include third-party software integration, student performance tracking, a system-wide grading scale setup, audio and video recording and advanced analytics and reporting.

Schoology is free to educators in K-12 public and private schools, colleges and universities worldwide. An enterprise version is also available, with pricing varying per implementation.

I am overall happy with it and glad that it exists!

Pros

You can use schoology to keep tabs on grades, homework assignments, upcoming events, conferences, test results, you name it. That is very helpful.

Cons

The interface is hard to navigate and it seems like each thing you are looking for is not in the place that you would expect. Once you get used to navigating through the buttons and menus, this isn't an issue, but there is definitely a learning curve.

Great software!!!

Pros

I use this in my clinic to inform parents of upcoming groups, talks, support, etc. It is so convenient to use and the parents love it too! I prefer this over simple email as it is much more effective getting parent's attention to what we are offering than email.

Cons

I don't use this as a teacher would. I am not seeing anything that is wrong with the system at this point. It's just so simple to use.

Pros

I like this product for smaller schools. It is easy to use and manage for K-12 teachers especially. Students seem to catch on quite quickly as it is fairly intuitive.

Cons

Once you get the product up and running I don't think I particularly have any cons. There are some work around that you have to do when it comes to recurring assignments but that is manageable.

Schoology - K-12 Winner, Not So Much for Higher Ed

Value for Money

Schoology is an excellent platform for blended learning or situations where online learning is supplemental to face-to-face learning. For higher education, or fully online learning, it has a long way to go to catch up with the industry leaders.

Pros

Schoology is easy to use, provides an intuitive interface, and leverages the benefits of social media. As an Enterprise user, I have access to the full suite of analytics and universal settings, which are powerful. The mobile apps are feature-rich as well.

Cons

Schoology is not the ideal platform for higher education. The interface, while easy to navigate, is juvenile in its icons and profile images. And while it features a social media "wall" of recent activity across one's courses, the interface looks like an old Facebook. Also, Schoology's font, which cannot be altered, even by Enterprise users, is too small. This raises ADA compatibility concerns.

Pros

Schoology is one of the best learning management systems (LMS) out there. Schoology's LMS can be used at the K-12 level, the higher ed level, and in corporate learning as well. Their support teams are very engaging and they share the mission of successful implementation and effective learning.

Cons

Sometimes new features need to be introduced to solve client related issues. While the feature requests are happily accepted, it can take a fair amount of time for the actual development and resulting release of that code.

Pros

*The LMS is appropriate to use for K-12 students.
*It was easy for me to use Schoology to administer quizzes and tests to my fourth grade students.
*I also used Schoology for my students to have online discussions, which they greatly enjoyed.

Cons

(Warning: The last time I used Schoology was in 2016. I have since switched careers. They may have upgraded features since then.)
*The email functionality was terrible. Our school administrator told us we were supposed to use Schoology for all email communication, but none of the teachers did because it was a huge was of time and effort. We stuck with our Gmail account.
*Using Schoology to store grades was also a nightmare as well. We had to use to other programs besides Schoology in order to administer our report cards.

Schoology - Empowering Blended Learning

Value for Money

Schoology has transformed my own teaching and assessment strategies, and I have seen it greatly impact the classrooms of my colleagues. It remains one of my top recommendations for any educators across the educational technology spectrum.

Pros

Schoology's greatest asset is its ease of use. When my institution adopted Schoology as the LMS (to replace a previous, more complicated LMS), we saw a 2/3 increase in active users, effectively transforming our classrooms. Schoology excels at communication (to your entire course, co-workers, or individual students) compared to other learning management systems. Additionally, schoology is an LMS visibly built around a learning centered classroom, unlike the obvious content-centered approach favored by prominent, older learning management systems.

Cons

Schoology's ease of use does mean some loss of complicated features. At first glance, schoology has a smaller feature set than some LMS's. However, if you are willing to be creative, the platform engages very cleanly with third party tools to accomplish any functionality that may have been lost.

Pros

Schoology is a blessing for being able to communicate with my classes. I can easily post updates for my students, tell them when things are due, and message them one-on-one (and they can message me if they will be absent or need something). The gradebook is easy to manage and you can even create tests.

Cons

Pros

The program allows you to create visual reports and color graphics on which you can trace the effectiveness of the work done. We very quickly learned about the work of the program - from basic functions to more complex ones, and now they constantly manage our lectures and supplement them with files and comments whenever they want from any devices. Also, we enjoy a variety of learning opportunities — discussions, quizzes, online assignments, video tutorials, and more ... all in constant and open access. Its simple integration with Google products doubles the learning and makes it almost completely electronic, our students will never miss important information and they are delighted with it!

Cons

I do not like:
- The need to enter a very long name to enter the system
- I cannot resize the edit window and move it, sometimes it makes the process very difficult
- Cannot create the duplicate event
- I would like to attach deadlines to the tasks
- Turnitin integration seems a bit daunting

Pros

As a professor, I interact with a lot of learning management systems. There are numerous factors to consider on the back end for schools or school districts. But when evaluating front-end user interface aspects, I think Schoology comes out on top. It is formatted as much like facebook as might be possible. The interface is intuitive and simple to navigate. Schoology would be a great choice for any business needing an LMS for training purposes (or any other use for a closed system content distribution). Certifications as well as grades are possible in the evaluation functions. And, best of all, with limited users the service is free. You'll have to check when the system switches to enterprise level (and the cost is an investment at that point for sure), but you'll have plenty of time to grow into it and make sure it is the right product before investing any funds.

Cons

This can be costly if you have usage appropriate to enterprise level. I would argue that you get what you pay for and it is worth it, but the cost to buy is not minor.

Schoology provides schools and teachers the ability to extend their classrooms and break down the traditional model of education. It supports blended and hybrid learning as well as a modality to reach all types of learners. It provides the teacher the ability to better communication with his/her students as well as provide access to classroom and teaching materials to better support rigorous learning outcomes in the classroom. The platform is user-friendly and intuitive and allows teachers to "build as they go" throughout their school year.

Pros

Schoology has provided our teachers the ability to break down the walls of their classroom and transform teaching and learning. Teachers are able to make learning and "anywhere/anytime" event with our students and have increased opportunities for communication and collaboration among their students. Schoology has provided a platform to better facilitate classroom assignments, assessments, discussions, communication, and parental outreach.

Cons

There are some technical features you think would have been part of the initial build that are still on the product road map. Technical support is extremely responsive though and always sends product enhancement suggestions to their development team.

At first I will admit that I was skeptical that it would be just one more thing to have to learn and deal with, but I quickly discovered that Schoology was going to be a lifesaver for both myself and my students. Schoology saves much time of incorporating fun an learning in my classroom.

Pros

When I think of the best learning management system, it is no other than Schoology. It is a software designed for collaboration and interaction with the ease of use since it has a user-friendly interface. I like all of its tools specifically the one that provides instant report on the assessment took by the students. This software was designed based on the needs of the users and their abilities to use modern technology without worrying on how to operate it. It is very portable because you can use any device and still it has a perfect graphical user-interface. Teachers and students will definitely enjoy learning through Schoology. No more boring lesson and no more wait time to check for over-all performance of each learner. I can say the this is the the technology's gift to learn instantly.

Cons

As a teacher, I want all my students to be self-managing when it comes to learning. Schoology helps me realize this. No comments and no suggestions on its improvement or features.

I think Schoology is a good software that is helpful in school for online submission of projects and documents, however I prefer Google Classroom because it is easier to use. It took me much longer to become acclimated to Schoology than Classroom.

Pros

Schoology is a well designed program that is very similar to Google Classroom. In Schoology, it is easier to organize than google classroom within the certain classes. The teacher is able to create folders that include all the classwork for the students in color coordination. This is easier to view than google classroom, however it is more difficult to view the due dates.

Cons

The hardest part of the software to me is the attachment of files to the assignment. In google classroom, it is very easy to attach videos, files, links, and documents. There is a button that allows students to attach documents of their own, however most of the time in my experience it refuses to attach my document to the file. I have to end up copying and pasting my document into a new document. Also, if a student submits the assignment and then realizes he or she has made a mistake, sometimes there is no option to un-submit it. Also, it will sometimes submit multiple versions of the document as it is edited.

Cons

What I like least about Schoology is how certain features that would seemingly be easy to fix take so long to be developed or go into affect. For example, the launch of the new assessments feature was very exciting because it open up more question types, but lacked some of the features so beneficial to students and educators. These features include the Spanish keyboards, quetion banks, and printable assessments.

I like the quick and instant access to important information about my child's school, but I find it's ease of use to be limited compared to other apps.

Cons

It could be more integrated and more intuitive in my mind.

Many of the students found many flaws and security breaches in the system. They could easily gain access to other students accounts through the default usernames, and many students have held violent riots protetsing schoology and to bring back edmudo. freak schoology

As a student, this is a very well thought tool for us to have an overview of how we are doing in a course as well as material but also evaluation is there! and as I said I think for teachers this is also very time saving, as opposed to other tools where not even the home dashboard makes sense and you need 100 clicks to find something

Pros

I used it as a student and it is so much user friendly that the tool we used to have. Also, I have friends teaching who used ir and have shown me the "admin" side of it and it really makes their lives easier!

Cons

That it is still very unknown in my university hehe
