Disctopia: Is is a Software for You?

My Disctopia experience has been overwhelmingly positive, from great response times, to a small community setting. Disctopia has given me the opportunity to produce content I've always wanted to, but never had the platform to do it on. They are quick to act, and they have a roadmap at the bottom of their main website which shows their progress at adding new features. This means that they tend to be very transparent with what they're working on, and that means a lot to me. I can see their progress, but also offer suggestions if need be as a user. Disctopia has it's negatives (see above), but they're not so bad that impact my overall experience as a user. I wholeheartedly believe that Disctopia will read this review and begin fixing my complaints, because that's the kind of company they are. They are a team of hardworking individuals trying to make the best product for creatives. The same can't be said about their competitors, which appear to be in it for the money rather than user experience. Disctopia is worth looking in to.

PROS

Disctopia is a hosting platform dedicated to creative minds, such as myself and likely you. This platform is awesome for the people interested in making multiple forms of content, including music, merch, podcasts, video (soon), and even audiobooks. It provides a vast opportunity to the userbase to expand their productions into other fields that most podcast hosts don't allow. Here's a few quick lists of positives: Small company and so you'll see a few names over and over again, like [SENSITIVE CONTENT]. This makes it feel much more personable because you know that it's an actual person communicating with you on the other side, instead of "Joe-Schmoe from huge mega company". Supper is Awesome! They respond quickly, and solve most bugs and issues. I spent my first few weeks scouring the website looking for bugs and reporting them, and most bugs were fixed within a few days. This shows that not only is the team active, but they listen to their creators. The platform provides an opportunity that others don't provide, including audiobooks, video, multiple podcasts, music, and merch. For content creators looking to expand, this is a great place to consider. It feels awesome when Disctopia tweets or quotes me in tweets/Instagram. Not only does it give me exposure, but it makes me feel a part of the community. Unfortunately, I'm now out of characters to finish a review :/

CONS

Disctopia has ridiculously long loading times. Every time I log in, or flip to a new page it can take upwards of 5-20 seconds to load that page. Which really sucks when you're trying to dance back and forth between pages doing tasks. I'm not a music producer, and so when I added my EP and music, I had to jump through a few hurtles to figure out ISBN codes and a few other features I'd never heard of. I wish Disctopia had a tutorials or explanation on how to add music, especially for people not used to the music industry. The merch shop is fine, but the main issue is that you can't choose where pictures go on the shirt. And thus, most PNGs you upload for the shirt just get placed very awkwardly squarely on the chest. A "merch customizer" that allowed user placement would be super helpful. Speaking of, it feels really awkward to link and send people to Disctopia to buy merch. There's no direct merch link page because every click opens a "box" instead of an independent, linkable page. The SM pushes I've done have been unsuccessful, with most of my audience complaining about even finding where the merch is located on my podcast page. I also like to embed my merch shop on my personal website, and, as of right now, it feels nigh impossible to embed the merch. Some Disctopia emails are broken. For instance, they send an email when an item is available on the merch shop with a link to a tweet. Every time, that link is broken and unusable.

Reasons for switching to Disctopia

Podbean was extremely limited. It was such a big platform, but their website editor was laughable, their Podads were awful, livestreaming was a terrible experience, and I was just genuinely disappointed in the product that Podbean is, despite all of the praise it received. I was also looking to expand my work by adding in music and merch, and Podbean simply does not offer that. So, I started looking for a place that did, and found Disctopia. They're still young, and don't have the reach nor integration down as well as Podbean, but at least Disctopia seems like they care. Podbean offered some seminars I attended, which were stuff I could've just googled or looked up on YouTube and learned. In fact, that's what I did. Podbean is also set up in a "Wordpress-blog" style, which was really boring and simple. Frankly, besides integration with other platforms, Podbean was just severely lacking in everything I wanted to do.

Great Podcast Host and Distributor

PROS

My favorite part of Disctopia is that I can easily push my podcasts to other platforms (Spotify, iTunes, etc.) by setting up my RSS feed. This is valuable to me because I can keep all my content on one site and Disctopia does the heavy liftin in the distribution. There are also some great features like the ability to sell merchandise directly from your Disctopia page. They are truly committed to helping podcasters and music artists monetize their following.

CONS

At the time of this review, the product is still young. There is a limited amount of content creators on Disctopia, but I truly believe they will continue to grow with such a great product.

Thanks, we improving everyday to become a leader in the streaming industry
