Hossam's SolarWinds NCM Review

I'm happy & very satisfied using NCM, feeling safe that in case any of my network devices failed, i can retrieve its configuration easily & even comparing it to older ones, as i can customize it up to a daily config backup task, also being able to push scripts to the NCM added devices makes life much easier & more centralized, saving effort & time.

PROS

I've been using NCM for more than 4 years now & i'm currently using its latest version 2020.2.6, using the license of 1000 allowed number of nodes, and i can say it is a module you can rely upon to maintain your Network devices configuration backed up continuously, i am having a daily backup of all the devices configuration & also can push any script into any added devices easily, saving time & effort. The support is very good & helps fixing any issue i may face, and also the forums community can provide quick solution when needed.

CONS

There is actually nothing i don't like about it except for its cost, and also for the admin using it, must be having a decent knowledge of SQL DB, yet their support can always help

Reason for choosing SolarWinds Network Configuration Manager

I use other SolarWinds products like IPAM, NPM & NTA, so it is easier to use the NCM alongside these other modules.

Solarwinds NCM

PROS

This software allows us to keep an audit trail for all the changes that takes place and it also captures that who made the change, and when a change is made in the configuration of any device then before and after comparisons are also available. We are also using this tool to keep backups for our core devices and when we are installing a new device or replacing a faulty, it helps us to apply the previously saved configuration on to the new device within few minutes.

CONS

This is a very expensive tool for small businesses and it requires administrative privileges to perform certain tasks, which might lead to a breach if exposed.

Manage your network device configurations

PROS

solarwinds network configuration manager allows us to take backup, monitor if any change in configuration has occurred and it was done by who and it also provides very good reports which we can modify according to our needs.

CONS

we were unable to purchase this software as it is very costly software but the time I spent on its trial period, the results were very outstanding and unfortunately we had to skip this as it was going out of our budget.

NCM is a must have for any environment

PROS

If you run more than 5 devices you need this tool. With the ability to automate backups of iOS of the Cisco and other supported devices like HP and others you save time and money, it keeps a history and allows you to quickly restore a previous image. It also documents any and all changes to the device.

CONS

Really there are not many. Price is about the only complaint, its expensive. I have found that often Solarwinds is very proud of their software and think it needs to bring top dollar.

Best for configuration automations, reporting and compliance management

Solarwinds network configuration manager works well in automating the backups from devices and managing the configuration changes but lacks in terms of maintaining decent GUI and weak in maintaining compliance management.

PROS

Solarwinds network configuration manager does an excellent job when it comes to automating the backups which make things easier. It does perform well in reporting and helps a lot in terms of compliance management.

CONS

Solarwinds NCM product needs efforts as compared to products in terms of maintaining the server, looks traditional in GUI, and recommends upgrading more about its thwack community.
