A coder experience on a no-code engine

Overall, I was surprised by this game engine, in a fantastic way. Its community is evolving, the engine is growing its potential every day, and it is easy to pickup and very performant. So far, I'm sticking with it for the long-term and I believe it's great not only for teaching game design basics, but also reaching high-quality projects.

PROS

I think it's way more intuitive than other engines. Without watching any of its amazing official tutorials or reading its complete wiki, you could create something simple in your very first try.I code on a daily basis, so I was used to working with other engines/frameworks that use mainly code to work out functionalities. I bumped into GDevelop accidentally and I liked how powerful it can be, I strongly believe its current potential has not been fully exploited. The extensions systems, ability to write custom code, and external layouts/events makes it also interesting for experienced developers. But it's still very beginner-friendly, allowing almost anyone with no game design experience to come out with a game/interactive story/graphical guide. It is free and open-source, two things that I really value, and it is constantly evolving.Haven't seen another engine matching the export features of GDevelop, in 10 minutes and no more than 5 clicks you could have an HTML5, Android, Windows, Linux, macOS distribution, ready to go. And only one click away to publish to their own game page.

CONS

It has a really cool mobile app (with almost all the same options as the desktop one) but its layout is not as useful, and arranging sprites/zooming can be very frustrating.Although it has support for tiles/tile maps, it would be very convenient if it has it as a native feature.3D still needs some work, it's a recent feature, and I'm sure it will evolve. One thing that may be a deal-breaker is that it currently stores all the game logic in a single-file. Whether this is really convenient for sharing or copying your game, it could be frustrating when you are collaborating through git, for example. I think that changing the way logic is stored could help a team collaborate better and reach bigger projects and easier scaling.

Vendor Response

Hi Marcelo! Project sharing is evolving in GDevelop. I'd love to talk to you about how that is changing, and the work that you do using GDevelop within your industry. Let me know if you're interested!

What Are Some Of GDevelop's Features and What Makes Them So Good/Bad?

I have had a great time using it and I expect to keep using it in the future. I really hope that this keeps expanding with more features and more code added to the no-code part.

PROS

I really like how easy to find and use GDevelop is. Not many things are locked under a paywall and the features are really nice and neat. The idea of letting the community build upon this is an amazing idea and makes practically anything possible! I also love the idea of adding ads into your games to be able to get monetized.

CONS

I dislike the lack of a movement script or a change of perspective. These things would make it way better and much more compatible with other games.

Reason for choosing GDevelop

It seemed easier to use and more new. Also, it looked really fun!

Reasons for switching to GDevelop

I found Unity's lessons really outdated. The whole thing has so many updates that it feels pointless to keep up. Also C# is pretty difficult to learn from videos that go over it from 2018 and your learning it in 2022

Vendor Response

You can add JavaScript blocks to your Event Sheet! And 3D has been added so you can play around with perspectives. Check out the changes, and thank you for the review!

Best 2D Game Engine Hands Down

I would highly recommend this engine to anyone who wants to learn game development or wants to try out 2D development. GDevelop is inexpensive and a fantastic starting point for devs and makes game development accessible.

PROS

GDevelop holds a special place in my heart. It is so easy to pick up and make games in, even if you have no coding experience making game development accessible for once. Recently they started adding 3D game development into the engine, I am extremely excited for the future of the engine.

CONS

I hope to one day see implementation of sprite strip / tileset editors in the IDE like Gamemaker has. It can be a pain to cut up every tileset and import each frame of a player or enemy animation.

Reason for choosing GDevelop

I use both but GDevelop is easier to use than Gamemaker.

Reasons for switching to GDevelop

I liked the no coding part of GDevelop more.

A thorough review of Gdevelop

Overall, I have been using Gdevelop for a little over 5 years now and in all my time of using it, I have never once felt that it has let me down. Ever since the beginning it was one of the most beginner friendly and easy to work with/understand game engine I have ever worked with. I have made so many games over the years and have learned so much. Crazy enough as it sounds, despite being a no-code engine, learning the Gdevelop events sheet has actually made it significantly easier when I started learning coding languages such as JavaScript and C#. I also really love watching Gdevelop grow and update more and more over time. There are so many new features and changes that have been added since I first started, and all for the better. In turn I have also seen my games getting better and higher quality due to my skills increasing and being given more access to new tools. In conclusion, I personally love Gdevelop and it easily fits my every need when developing games.

PROS

I love it's simple and easy to understand interface as well as it's kind and welcoming community. I can't stress enough how natural it feels to use Gdevelop compared to other game engines. Everything just flows so nicely and even at times when I run into roadblocks, there is always someone willing to help out.

CONS

Despite all of the absolutley spectacular things about Gdevelop, nothing will ever be perfect. However, Gdevelop sure isn't too far from perfect in my eyes. My only real complaints is that occasionally the built in pixel art editor "Piskel" will crash after I press undo "Ctrl + Z". Which in turn makes me lose any progress I made to the sprite I was editing or drawing. Again though, this does happen quite rarely.

Reason for choosing GDevelop

To put it plain and simple, Gdevelop was significantly more welcoming and beginner friendly than all of the other mentioned game engines. Along with that, each other one had it's own other problems. Starting off with my personal least favorite. Unreal Engine not only is a massive game engine that takes up over 100gb of storage, but on my gaming desktop computer it still barely ran and was incredibly laggy. This overall made Unreal Engine practically unusable for me, and to top it off, I personally found C++ to also be a very difficult coding language to work with. Second was Godot, I don't have much to say about this one since from what I tested it out, it kind of just seemed to be a slightly less capable Unity. I also personally just didn't really like the UI too much either. I don't really have anything against Godot, it just simply wasn't really for me. Finally is Unity, I honestly enjoyed working with Unity, however I mostly wanted and preferred to make 2d games since I love working with pixel art. Though Unity can also make incredible 2d games, I decided that it was too overly complicated for what I wanted to make. In the end, Gdevelop was the clear perfect game engine for me, it fit all of my needs, and was much easier to work with and understand as a beginner.

Vendor Response

Thank you so much for the kind, detailed review!

Brings me closer to my childhood dream of publishing my own games.

There are a lot of tools for developing videogames these days, and most of them are free to some degree... But there's always a catch. For some it's the insane system requirements, for others is a steep learning curve, and for some others it's the cost. And others are just overkill if you just want to make a running or platform pixel art game. With GDevelop you get just the right tools, its very lightweight on resources, you can start from free and the learning curve it's almost inexistent, you dont even need experience coding. A compact, well optimized package that can take you from prototype to final product, quick and easy, and on lots of platforms.

PROS

Really lightweight on system resources, I've even tried it on my phone and it seems totally possible to fully develop and publish at least a simple game on it. You can quickly preview your work in progress in a browser window from within the app. It provides you with everything you need to create your project from scratch and even publish the final product.Feeling lost? You can just import one of the several premade starter and tutorial projects and start building from there. There's also plenty of official videos and documentation, and they're all really easy to understand. Skill level? From zero to hero. The price? You can start from free, there's a lot of free resources and assets and if you want to go the next level, the premium ones are really accesible. You can also subscribe to the premium version with cloud features, etc, the starting point being literally that of a sandwich a month.

CONS

I personally won't use it, but 3D seems a bit limited, at least for big complex projects... For simple lightweight games it seems good enough.

Reason for choosing GDevelop

Didn't try the other product but GDevelop seemed more complete and easy to get into.

Reasons for switching to GDevelop

Their system requirements quickly outmatched my computer's capabilities. Features suddenly going away. Lost myself on the UI, too complex and distracting.

A no hassle game dev tool.

I'm using it for fun, testing, quick and dirty prototypes and it's a marvelous tool for kids and semi-serious devs.

PROS

It's a super light tool to use. Gives a feeling of doing a game right in the game due to a lack of actual scripting editor. There are, however, advanced funtionalities for the curious/experienced ones, which I am not. It's also extremely easy to use, which makes you focus on the art more... I'd assume most users looking into GDevelop appreciate that. The extensions are just amazing. You can easily do basic and semi-advanced things extremely quickly, like making player move, laying out the levels, integrating physics and such.

CONS

The UX/UI could be much better. Initially that was a turnoff for me but it grew on me eventully, and it has improved since in both speed and usability.Would love a console export support (especially Switch, which GDevelop seems like made for) but that is probably not hapenning. Finally, seeing more reviewed extension (with better documentation) and more support for devs that build extensions would be great — they have the potential to make GDevelop skyrocket (like the recent 3D implementation). There are some amazing extensions out there (Dynamic Water comes to mind), as well as advanced examples you can get on GitHub, but they're hard to find and/or understand with limited info.

Reasons for switching to GDevelop

It was too complex for the simple things I was planning to do.

Gdevelope got me back into game design!

I have been using G develop as my primary engine and I have completed one game and I have started on another, which is going to be my first actual game release.

PROS

I tried game design on unreal engine 4, and it was kind of difficult to use. I only used the no code portion of the engine, but it was still so complex, and I was new to game development. I kind of quit because I got nowhere in Unreal engine 4 after about five years. When I started, GDeveloped, I just fell in love with the engine because it was so simple. I actually created basically a full game in a couple months as opposed to years without a success.

CONS

One of the things that unreal has that G developer doesn’t, or at least I don’t know how to use it much and it seems a little bit complicated in the engine. That is the debugging feature. And you, E4, you can run the engine and then look at the code, and it will show real time the engine processing the code, which helps you see where your hiccups are, this was my favorite feature of you in for, and it would be really cool if GDevelop could implement something like that.

Reasons for switching to GDevelop

Unreal Engine was a bit too much for me, I don’t think I was ready for it. GDevelop has helped me understand game development so much.

Vendor Response

We have a built-in debugger! Check the wiki and documentation for more information on how to use it.

Honest review about the magnificiant GDevelope. ✔✔✔✔✔

GDevelope is one of the most engaging and friendly software which is great for beginners and pros, the best things/features we like about GDevelope is:1. The community2. The features3. The low price.4. The pre built modules5. GDevelope :D

PROS

I personaly like the way how friendly and angaging the GDevelope features and communities are. They are open for the people starting from newbies to the very expert programers. The pre-build modules are excellent for the newbie programers to grasp on what are the foundations of building and animating modules.

CONS

Even though there are only few countable errors or things us the community don't like that are limited feature, all good/smooth features are premium that is paying money for them. Only these minor mistakes are hated by the community.

Reasons for switching to GDevelop

It was frusterating for me to keep up with those complex features, high value bundles for features and limited features that locked my creativity from being expressed.

Nice Engine for beginners and not so beginners

This became my main engine for the moment

PROS

Ease of use and exportation of projects, also it's quite intuitive to do a lots of things, behaviors are the strong point of this engine

CONS

When you get the hang of how the "no code" enviroment works it gets kinda slow to keep using events, should be an option for a more faster coding experience

Reasons for switching to GDevelop

This is easier to use and cleaner when exporting projects

Glad I found GDevolop

Overall, I'm very happy I found GDevelop. I've tried similar products (Construct) but there is just so much more (and more value) available at GDevelop. I've bounced around several different game engines and languages, but I think this one is a keeper!

PROS

I enjoyed the "onboarding" with the helpful tutorials to help explain how the development environment works. Also, I really enjoy the videos at YouTube, they keep me learning along the way.

CONS

I'm still learning, but the only thing that sticks out so far is the handling of tables/arrays could be a little more intuitive. I'm starting to figure out how GDevelop handles tables, but there's still something missing. Hard to explain.

Reasons for switching to GDevelop

More features, easier, cheaper, better tutorials.

GDevelop is in my opinion the best solution for creating 2D games and applications quickly and easil

To date, I have developed and published seven projects on Google Play, sorted from the most popular:"Map of air alerts of Ukraine" is an application that displays threats to the population of Ukraine in real time in a graphical form on the map of Ukraine. This app was built entirely with built-in features of GDevelop, no external solutions like JS code, the app has been downloaded by 350,000 users all the time, and it brings real value to people. It doesn't seem like a lot of downloads, but according to GDevelop statistics, the application has been launched about 20,000,000 times in all the time! "Gearbox" is a manual transmission simulation game. For all the time this project was downloaded by 150,000 people and this is exactly the project that I released in the first month of my use of GDevelop and this proves that you don't need to study for years, but you just need to do it and everything will be fine. "Submarine" is a game in which you can build your own submarine and install cannons on it to counter underwater enemies. This game was created within 10 days for GDevelop's building-themed jam, but that hasn't stopped it from garnering close to 4,000 downloads to date."Weather Feels Like" is a weather app that focuses more on temperature sensations. Again, it was created with built-in functions in the engine, without the use of external solutions, it works perfectly interacting with the Internet in the same way as the Alarm Map.

PROS

Ease of use - in GDevelop you can really quickly and easily learn how to create games and applications of any type, I say this from my own experience, since I came to this engine with almost nothing in programming and development, but after a day I was able to create my own , although a simple game based on an example, and a week later I released another game, but it was more complicated and a month later I released my first successful game, which I will talk about a little later. Frequent updates - Gdevelop quite often introduces new features and improves old ones, and especially quickly solves bugs related to engine functions. And of course the community - the GDevelop community is the best community I have ever met in my life, if you have a question or a problem, then 100% there will be people who will definitely help you, even if your problem is very simple and obvious, or vice versa very complex and generally not obvious. You can contact the community at any time and in almost any language and they will definitely help you.

CONS

I would not say that this is a big minus, but at some point in my work, I lacked the variety of integrated ad networks SDKs for mobile devices. At the moment, if I'm not mistaken, only AdMob is available from such networks, but I would like to have at least some alternative, for example, if Admob decides to stop cooperating with you at some point, then you will lose most of your profits ( if you're a mobile developer like me) and you won't be able to recoup those profits by changing the network (unless you're a genius programmer who can integrate the ad SDK on your own). But in general, I'm glad that Gdevelop is developing and I hope that new ad networks will appear and be supported in the future.

GDevelop Review From A 3D Artist Perspective

I’ve had a very good experience so far and as I still build my game after 1 year I have learned so much and feel I am progressing a lot. I now feel like I can make any type of game in Gdevelop. Love the software and keep improving!

PROS

The No code aspect is a huge part of why I started using it and the ease of use / quick learning I experienced were stellar. I love the interface and how easy it is to visualize your conditions and actions working together. It’s a very intuitive system and for someone like me with experience using 3D software, I picked up on GDevelop fairly quick and now I feel I am near Expert Level after almost 1 year. I also love the ease of build creation and live / mobile preview! Very smart!

CONS

I feel like there can be better organizational tools for developers. I see there is groups in conditions but it would be better to expand upon the customization for Ease of Life changes while coding and setting up large numbers of conditions and objects. Specifically I want to have nested object folders like in all 3D outliners such as Blender or Maya.

Vendor Response

Nested folders are in the roadmap! Stay tuned!

Great teaching environment for children wanting to move beyond Scratch, but not ready for coding.

It is a perfect fit for our STEAM programming classes. I don't ever know what type of game the class will develop as we start with Concept Ideas, Prototyping and Development. Gdevelop's flexibility lets us go many directions from resource management, to top down adventures, to platform games. While I occasionally have to step in and lower the students expectations, that is usually a time restriction rather lack of GDevelop's capabilites.

PROS

It provides all the features for complete 2d games without overwhelming my elementary students. It's development and capabilities have sky-rocketed over the last couple of years and I'm excited to see where it heads from here.

CONS

While I occasionally come across bugs in the different exports they are either quickly resolved or adequate work around offered.

Reason for choosing GDevelop

A good balance between capability and ease of use.

Reasons for switching to GDevelop

Clickteam dropped their educational version and the free version frequently had restrictions and artificial limits that made using it in the classroom setting difficult.

A Fun Step Into Game Development

GDevelop is a fun and very powerful tool, with everything you could want in one place! I used it to create a fun game to show my students how they could create their own games, as many of them are interested in video games. Unfortunately, the high level of entry with how much research and background knowledge a user must have to create something kept me from trying to have my students test it out, as it would have required much more time and research than we had. I did mention to students what I used in case they wanted to try it on their own, but I wish that GDevelop made their program even more user friendly by adding built in tutorials, or simpler "challenges" to guide someone through making their first game.

PROS

GDevelop packs a ton of features into it's software! Users can edit almost anything they want to - from creating their own character or environment sprites, to detailed interactions and game logic and rules. It's amazing what someone can do with these tools given the time and effort, and for those who are interested in game design and have some ideas of what they want to do, this is a great program!

CONS

My biggest complaint with GDevelop is that it really leaves the user to fend for themselves. While it does offer a selection of templates, from platformers to 2D shooters, it does not provide much help beyond that. It is up to the user to either search out help online, on their forum, or to just guess and test whatever they might want to mess with. Someone with more experience or familiarity with the terms that game developers use might have an easier first time, but it can be quite a challenge for someone new. I also wish there were tutorials that could involve younger users to take the first step in game development

Gdevelop is a great engine

PROS

The editor is one of my favorite editors in a game. It's so quick to get your graphics and animations in the editor.

CONS

My biggest con is the lack of tutorials. Gdevelop is an easy engine but like all engines there are still things you need to figure out and that's hard when there aren't many resources available.

Review for GDevelop

I prefer to drag and down them where i want them to choose their colors, size and other attributes.

PROS

I enjoyed the being arrangement more visual and the widespread industry wide termination of applications like visual basics . It is good and user friendly to use and manage.

CONS

There is some improvement needed in 3D features of GDevelop. There is nothing more to dislike for this product.
