Long Time Fan of this Technology!
It's been amazing - they are so supportive and engaged. Now, with the Customer Experience team, it's even better. I've never felt so listened to by a vendor. They really do work to take feedback and make the product better.
PROSOne of the major reasons why we chose USU is becuase of the ability to handle all our different data sources. We weren't forced to buy yet another discovery tool - we have more than 10 different data sources connected globally and we add more every quarter. The ability to normalize that data across all those systems means we can implement new connectors and not have to worry as much as before about data quality.
CONSIf you'd asked me 3 years ago - I'd say the user interface. But they've improved that 10x over!! Now, I'd say a wider selection of out of the box reporting - but even that is getting better with each new release.
Reason for choosing USU Software Asset Management
The data/not needing another discovery product. The team - ah-may-zing!!

6 years with Smarttrack
As a user - with a lot of IT experience - it was not difficult to figure out what is what in the tool. However I trained a new member to use the tool and that took a fair amount of training, so people without IT background may find it overwhelming at first. My difficulties started as my role shifted into an administrator one and I had to figure out data related problems or implement new connectors. It took a lot of time to get familiar with the data exchange and administration menus. We run USU LiMa on a dedicated physical server so we barely have any performance issues.
PROSThe software works steadily. In the 6 years I have been working with it I can not recall a single time it stopped working because something went wrong with the software. It is also feature rich and - although it takes effort - can be custom tailored to most organizations and asset management requirements. Having seen other tools of the same purpose, I am still positive about USU LiMa being one of the better ones and I do not mind working with it. Especially with Datahub that makes data source and data management a lot easier, in my opinion.
CONSFirst of all Its configuration and installation is fairly complex. User level navigation is fairly easy but as soon as one needs to look into the engine bay, things get complicated. Without knowing where to look for e.g. connector parameters, it is easy to get lost in the labyrinth of submenus and not actually find the thing. That aspect got better with the latest version - where the menu became vertical - so USU improved it. My real gripe with USU LiMa is the support. Their response and solution times are in dire need of improvement in my honest opinion. Despite the close cooperation between Raynet and USU, we encounter many problems transferring data from one tool to another.
Reason for choosing USU Software Asset Management
I was not with the company when the selection was made, however having seen the tools of the competition, I would have chosen USU SAM as well.

Overly Complex, Expensive, Not Useful at the moment
Our information has not updated in 9 months. Our backend IT engineers discovered it was because USU changed their server name that we are reporting into, thus creating a new device ID without telling us. This in turn broke data uploads and has caused our USU reporting to stagnate rendering it useless at this point.
PROSI like that you can look at your environment and perform various sandbox activities (or what-if scenarios) to try and attain cost advantages.
CONSThe interface is cumbersome and difficult to use.
