Slack: The Bridge Connecting Colleagues With Effective Communication

While Slack is not extra-ordinary, it certainly is reliable. Its quick communication is the most attractive thing about it. If the problems are fixed, then it can do so much better.

PROS

Slack is a holistic platform which allows to integrate with other office tools and spaces. The best part about it is that one doesn't have to check their mails often. When your workplace is virtually available on Slack, 24*7 updates are available on a simple notification. With detailed notification settings, one can also choose to appear offline/away after office hours. Another good thing about it is, Slack is neither too personal nor to formal. You can chat/reach out to any member of the company at any time without having to worry if you are disturbing someone or being too informal in doing so. The reminders for meetings and special events eliminate the need to mark them personally on a calendar. All in all, Slack is the ultimate interface every organisation needs.

CONS

One of the things that needs improvement is the audio-visual quality of the video call service of Slack. That really needs working. Apart from this, Slack can be a little confusing with many channels that one has to navigate through. Channels are like sub-groups within one common platform. Too many channels can sometimes create confusion and miscommunication. Another problem would be its limitation of working smoothly only on the app. It often runs roughly on Chrome or any other browser.

Reason for choosing Slack

Slack has better space for user interaction.

Slack: a good business instant message application

My experience with Slack has been really good. Slack helps me a lot on my daily activities and even more when I'm working from a remote location or inspecting something and need to interact with our team at the main office.

PROS

Slack is easy to use and its interface is very similar to other IM applications we have been using for years. That makes the transition from whatever IM software currently in use to Slack quick and smooth. In our company, nobody needed to be trained to use Slack and users went well with the transition process. Slack allows users to customize their names, profile picture, and current status. It's also possible to send messages to individuals, groups of people, and into channels. Users most commonly send text messages but they have the option to send screen captures, pictures, and files in general at their own convenience. A very useful resource in my opinion is the ability to create shared channels where you can add people from outside your organization as well as users from other Slack organizations. With this feature, you can create a support channel with a service provider and have quick interaction with them, for example.

CONS

I don't have too much complaints about Slack. One of them is that as an Administrator, I believe that the management interface is a bit confusing. Sometimes it takes me a while to remember certain basic operations because Slack has its own way of having that done. Also, I had issues with some of my users a couple of times because of bugs with Slack application. The last I remember would freeze half of the user's screen so nothing shown in that area was clickable of selectable. Closing and reopening Slack would temporarily solve the problem. I contacted Slack support and they confirmed that as a known issue and that would be fixed soon with a software update.

Reason for choosing Slack

It was a top down decision.

Reasons for switching to Slack

We changed to Slack because the owner of our company had a good feedback from other company owners about that, so he decided to move into Slack.

Slack is essentially advanced texting for business users

I started using Slack because my client required it. I find that it cuts down on my email dependence but I'm often frustrated when attempting to compose a message without standard elements such as tables, inline images, etcetrera.

PROS

I like the ability to stay in touch with our users via whatever device I'm currently using. For example, I can respond from my home computer, tablet, work computer or via my phone. I especially like the ability to be notified of a new message via my phone where I can read the message on the phone but can step over to my laptop to reply. I also appreciate the ability to add an email thread to a Slack Channel by simply adding a slack email address (each channel has a unique email address) to the CC field when I reply.

CONS

The biggest con for me is the extremely limited amount of formatting available to Slack messages. I can make a font bold and add links to files/images but I really miss the rich text features many similar apps provide. It's also frustrating to need to keep typing adding the user name(s) when I'm responding to a message. I'm assuming that this is by design but it would really be nice to be able to "Reply All" to a conversation thread. The desktop Slack application (running on Windows 10 Pro) has a "clunky" feel to it. It's written with a framework that allows the Slack developers to write HTML and JavaScript code that is essentially compiled into a Windows application and it definitely shows. Something as simple as selecting text is counter-intuitive (until you realize that it's essentially a web page mascaraing as a Windows application.

Reasons for switching to Slack

My client required us to use Slack.

Slack is perfect for cooperating with your team, for conversations and for creating groups

PROS

You can create groups per project or issues with all relevant people and you can share documents, images and everything really simple. There are icons and emojis which are funny and the notifications are very well integrated and help distinguish the important from the not relevant.

CONS

Video-calling and audio-calling are just not working well and slack for cell phone does not update really well and there are some conversations that you can miss.

Reasons for switching to Slack

My company just switched from Teams to Slack and honestly I can say that Slack is way better in almost all features except calls.

Slack is the engine room of team interaction.

We use Slack extensively for communication purposes. Slack acts as a collaboration hub within my department, for extensive group discussions between members of my department. Infact , it is the fastest way to get responses to most work related queries from team members.

PROS

I like that Slack retains our conversation history as a team . This is very important for future referencing purposes. Slack is available on a variety of platforms , and this makes seamless access to my team channels possible. This is important because team channels is where a lot of team discussions take place in real time.

CONS

It is common place to experience lags and stability issues during Slack calls. This is the only area where my use of Slack has been affected negatively.

Great way to stay connected with your team.

Really great tool, to keep communicated with your team when we all are working from different places in the world. Really robust system and also easy to use.

PROS

I like the way you can have everything in one place: chat, calls, video conference, etc without the need of having any other software.

CONS

I didn;t kie much the syncing with the mobile application, as if I read something on my computer, it will not get marked as read in my phone. So I had to open the conversations on my phone to to mark them as read.

Messaging application used in professional setting

I liked this app very much but it had limitations. Also it somewhere fits the software space better that telecom for daily collaboration purposes.

PROS

I liked the look and feel of the app. It was well designed and has many features when it comes to instant messaging. It is comparable to Skype for business before but just obviously better.

CONS

It does not have a calling feature. Also, it can be tough to get used to for people that are less tech savvy.

The Gold Standard For Workplace Communication

We have employees all over the world so Slack is our hub for communication. We use it to have conversations, post announcements, and brainstorm ideas. It can also launch video conferences with excellent annotation features which makes it easy to share ideas about a document or piece of code.

PROS

It is extremely easy to use, there are many bots and tools to customize your workspace, and the actual communication tools are superior to the ones offered by Google and Microsoft. For example, the ability to thread conversations, easily set reminders about messages, and other subtle things add up to a much better communication system.

CONS

I have experienced no major negatives as a user of the product. Depending on the number of users in your organization, the monthly cost will start to add up but I think this is similar to their competitors unless you're already paying them for other services that include something like Microsoft Teams, for example.

Reason for choosing Slack

Slack has better usability than Microsoft Teams and Google Meet. Users inside the company mostly preferred to use Slack even when multiple options were available. The threading functionality is particularly useful. Flowdock actually does conversation threading the best of all the products, but its a smaller player at this point so is probably not considered as often.

Reasons for switching to Slack

Flowdock was actually a high quality product and the best competitor to Slack that I've tried, but Slack became much more popular and started to have better integrations with other third party services. At this point, Slack has become synonymous with workplace communication software in the same way that Zoom has for workplace video chat.

The Best Communication Tool for Business & Also Easily Misused at an Organizational Level

Ultimately, I gave up Slack in my own organization and only use it when clients add me to their accounts. The ability to have task-related conversions in Asana is initially where I migrated my team off of Slack.

PROS

I love the immediacy of the tool. The ability to hash out a conversation entirely online, grouped by subject matter with the exact amount of people you need to be involved on a team. The price is a dream since there is full functionality with a free account as long as you don't need access to older files. When the Slack interface is set up well for an organization, it makes department-wide communication effortless.

CONS

Since each user tends to have different communication styles, organizations that don't create frameworks and guidelines around how their organization uses the tool devolve into chaos. I've had clients who have a beautifully streamlined tool that functions in a way that serves their business and other clients who have let the tool become a complete distraction to their workflows.

Reasons for switching to Slack

Email threads are cumbersome, confusing as soon as there are a few replies, and slow as molasse.

Magic tool for remote work communication

Love it-Hope to use slack regardless of where I end up throughout everyday life. May even use it for individual utilize and can undoubtedly make bunch visits with companions,

PROS

Slack makes informing proficient and puts together messages into various channels. It is extremely helpful to private message just as make gatherings. Moreover, records are saved and filed for simple access. I likewise enjoyed the usability and capacity to work together with anybody in your association. My most loved uses out of the product 1.) Unlimited number of channels-Public/Private 2.) Ability to make shapes that get distributed to explicit channels 3.) Love utilizing the/remind piece so I can get pings about undertakings requiring finish or a straightforward subsequent update 4.) You can have some good times and tweak. For instance: We have a 'Jokes' channel that the leeway bot will make you wisecracks on the off chance that you ask 'bot make me a father quip'- It's astounding

CONS

Difficult to think of any as a client yet heres a shot: 1.) The limitless assortment of channels makes the high opportunities to get steady pings in case somebody @'s you in a channel. 2.) You get dependent and wind up using your organization correspondence application 'Slack' off hours and simply signing on as though it were a web-based media page. I disdained the failure to make a public gathering "private" after it's creation. Would incidentally slack and my. messages would just come through on my telephone and not work area

Reason for choosing Slack

Slack is really a brand and have some valuable feature for remote work.

Multifaceted Messaging

Some employees are not in the facility for most or all of the day. Slack helps me monitor everyone and is a way for us talk throughout the day. Employees working together or in rotation use slack to stay in touch too. In the morning we get everyone in a quick video conference to plan for the day and update. It's worked well.

PROS

I can create message channels and control or monitor who is in each, settings can be changed to public or private. Individuals can message privately too. I like how the channels are displayed I can find any of them quickly. Video calls can be created without leaving the messages screen. I can usually see and hear everyone clearly. Links open in the app and when I send photos and videos all load quickly.

CONS

All of the messages aren't saved and I wasn't able to find a way to change the setting. I have had to save folders full of screenshots incase important messages get deleted. More value for money and less taken out of the lower price tiers would make Slack better too.

Reasons for switching to Slack

Microsoft teams was included in 365 but not easy to use. Mattermost is very similar to slack but just not nearly as good.

Daily Slack User

We are a political research firm that utilizes hundreds of contractors who give surveys. The surveys change on-the-fly once requirements are met, and as a result contractors must be notified in real-time as they work from home

PROS

Ease of real-time mass communication while at the same time enabling group convo, closed/hidden group convo, and 1 on 1 communication.

CONS

The constant bombardement of msgs that are not applicable to me from various groups im in. There should be a display to notify others of how I'm recieving msgs in a given timeframe

Reason for choosing Slack

Teams does t allow users to write msgs to thmeselves, not as user friendly, harder to communicate 1 on 1. ( cant see msgs read, etc)

Reasons for switching to Slack

We found Slack user friendly. When you have tech challenged folks working an online job, it's essential to have software that accomodates them. Oh, and its free up to a point.

Pretty great way to connect with your team

I really enjoy using Slack to connect with various groups and individuals I need to interact with both inside and outside of my work organization. Adding additional connections outside of my organization is easy and then gives me access to all work-related communications inside the app I already use for work communications. Very convenient!

PROS

It's easy to set up new workspaces, and once they're set up you have an easy way to connect with all the people you work with simply and in either a synchronous or asynchronous way. This is especially helpful when connecting with people from multiple timezones.

CONS

Video calls are pretty resource-intensive so it's sometimes hard to do such things as share your screen to demonstrate a problem you're working on. Furthermore, those controls always get in the way of what you're trying to do. It would be nice if they could be minimized into a floating button, or something, that you could move out of the way until you needed them.

Reasons for switching to Slack

I think the higher ups in my company decided to try Discord but then came back to Slack mostly because the video calling was buggy on Discord. Plus it's not as widely used among the organizations we work with outside ourselves. Even when we were using Discord mostly for our own internal communications, I think we still used Slack to connect with other companies.

Nice messaging platform

Overall slack is a nice messaging platform and really helps the individuals while working in a project of multiple team members. It helps in sharing of text messages and files and also has calling features and major third party integrations which makes it a complete package.

PROS

I found slack a powerful tool to communicate with the other team members in real time. It has better voice quality on call, large size file sharing, one-to-one and group messaging. It also allows to star the messages, which is really helpful to bookmark the important information from the chat. The features such as wrapping the text in code snippet and selecting the file type (for example, html, java, js, etc.) is beneficial for developers. It provides APIs to create custom applications and also has an app directory from where users can install out-of-the-box integrations for Github, google drive and other third parties.

CONS

There are few features which are missing, for example, whenever a user is removed from the workspace, no notification is being sent back to the user. Also, the slackbot could be improved, most of the times, it just provides the search results from the slack help directory. It is not easy to switch workspaces. One has to close the workspace completely and then switch back to the another workspace.
