When we need motion for a launch or campaign, it gets the job done, and since it’s the industry standard, the files are easy to hand off to other motion designers. That said, I only reach for it when I have to. It solves the problem, but it takes a lot longer than it should, and I’m actively looking for faster tools to replace it. #### Ratings breakdown - Ease of use: 2/5 - Customer support: 1/5 #### Pros Honestly, the main upside is that it’s the industry standard, so if you need motion graphics there isn’t much choice. Importing layered Illustrator files works well enough, and once you fight through the setup it can technically do almost anything. #### Cons It feels clunky and outdated, with menus buried inside menus for even basic tasks. I can’t import a simple SVG, which is literally the thing I’m trying to animate, so I have to bring it into Illustrator, save it as an AI file, then convert it to shape layers just to get started. Previews are slow, renders take forever, and it crashes more than any app I use, so I’m constantly saving out of fear. Exporting something as basic as an MP4 often means opening Media Encoder too. It also quietly builds up a massive disk cache with no warning. I recently deleted over 500GB of After Effects cache alone, which is wild for an app I don’t even use every day. The learning curve is steep, and a lot of simple animations require expressions or plugins to do well. It locks you into the Adobe ecosystem and the subscription price keeps going up for software that barely feels like it’s changed in years. There’s no real way to collaborate with a team, which makes handoff painful. In my opinion, this program has a lot of advantages; for instance, it has great functionality in terms of 2D Motion Graphics. Secondly, it has a powerful Asset Ecosystem, which is really helpful. Another advantage of After Effects is that it has a wide variety of Third-Party plugins. In particular, there are many plugins for particle systems and physics simulations. Moreover, it has Scripting & Automation, with the help of which one can make amazing special effects. #### Cons To be honest, I also know some disadvantages of the program. For example, it has enormous Memory Hunger, which means that you need at least 64 GB of RAM. Another downside is the Legacy Engine & and Slow 3D Rendering. The feature I use the most is Motion Graphics Templates because it saves a lot of time when creating similar projects. I also like how well it integrates with Premiere Pro, Photoshop, and Illustrator, making it easy to move assets between applications without starting over. The AI-powered features have also improved my workflow. Content-Aware Fill is surprisingly useful for removing unwanted objects from video clips, and the newer AI-assisted tools for tracking and masking are much faster than doing everything manually. The animation controls are extremely flexible, and expressions allow for advanced automation once you learn them. There are thousands of plugins, templates, and tutorials available online, so it's easy to expand what the software can do. Overall, it gives me professional-quality results that would be difficult to achieve with simpler video editors. #### Cons The biggest downside is the learning curve. It can become timely to see if the animation is set at the speed I'm wanting it waiting for it to render, if not, and have to re-edit, i have to wait for the preview to render again. Doing this can become a time-consuming obstacle when creating content. It's way too expensive, and they make it difficult to cancel your subscription. It has everything a creative needs to make professional animations and videos for social media or TV. The possibilities are endless and the amount of adds-on and plugins are very vast and enable you create stunning VFX and motion graphics. #### Cons The updates to After Effects can mean that you need to have a fast machine to be able to preview some complex clips. They keep making it better however you need to have a good machine to be able to keep up. ---
