Easy to use

Heroku is a powerful and user-friendly platform that makes it easy for developers to build, deploy, and manage their applications. While it may not be the cheapest option available, its extensive feature set and flexibility make it well worth considering for any development team.

PROS

One of the key benefits of Heroku is its ease of use. Developers can quickly get started by simply pushing their code to the platform using Git, without having to worry about the underlying infrastructure. Heroku also provides a range of pre-configured build packs and add-ons that make it easy to add additional functionality to your application.Another strength of Heroku is its flexibility. It supports a wide range of programming languages and frameworks, including Ruby, Java, Node.js, Python, and Go. This means that developers can choose the tools and technologies that best fit their needs, without being locked into a specific stack.

CONS

Heroku can be somewhat expensive compared to other PaaS options. Its pricing model is based on the amount of resources (e.g. memory, CPU) used by your application, and can quickly add up as your application grows and scales. Additionally, some developers may find the platform to be too opinionated, as it imposes certain constraints and limitations on how applications can be built and deployed.

Easy to scale PaaS in top of Amazon regions for your own or orgs git projects

Heroku has a friendly UI and set it up very easily with git flow inside a corporation. The way it scales up/down its really intuitive and makes a team work without issues. However, sometimes, the PaaS lacks in display some different regions availability and have a higher cost for private spaces, so need some planning before implementing in your org to check if fits with your needs.

PROS

The way Heroku let you scale up clustered instances using the dynos all through an friendly UI its a really useful feature that makes effortless get your app up and running to handle huge amount of traffic. Also its really simple setup a Review App pipeline created automatically by a git hook which makes easy create versions of the app based in a PR Review or purposed change.

CONS

I think Heroku lacks in display different regions in the free tier and also private spaces. This limit your application for certain regions - if you're planning have a Data Residency and Region availability isn't recommended in my opinion. Also Heroku depends 100% with Amazon availability - once some regions of amazon or ec2 was off last year, the whole panel wasn't able to access. I would suggest have a backup plan with dynos in a different provider to have resilience in third-party providers.

Reason for choosing Heroku

I think Heroku still have an intuitive UI that makes easier for a team manage without go over so much documentation or troubleshooting if something happens. Also the company provide some support and buildpacks for legacy code, like frameworks such as Meteor and different Node versions.

Heroku Review

PROS

For what we use Heroku for, its very good. We were using Heroku as a proxy server and currently with Heroku Dynos for running our apps.

CONS

I think some of the issues we started seeing with Heroku did not have a lot to do with them but I think rather how software development was starting to go, for example we were deploying our API server on Heroku as a proxy and using other platforms for the frontend, but there has been some consolidation recently where a few other tools have started to feel easier to deploy and build on than Heroku.

Excellent for fast-deploy

We ran the first version of our app in Heroku, at the beginning of the company. The smooth and easy operation of heroku, helped us a lot on the initial days.

PROS

Good UX, extremely quick and easy to deploy solutions that need fast go-live. Pricing is simple to understand

CONS

We found that for the early stage of our app, heroku handled it good, but as the app grew and we needed more customization, it lacked some features. Also, there was no Brazil based servers at that time.

Reason for choosing Heroku

All in one solution, easy to deploy, clear understanding of pricing.

Deployment of a machine learning as a service

The overall experience were good, I was able to deploy my environment and connect it on an application. I had hard time with libraries imcompatibilities, but it was fixed during the implementation.

PROS

It's graphical resources are very intuitive with easy "step by step" procedures. Their log service helped me go through issues and solve them.

CONS

It could keep a free tier for small business like mine. I just have a POC and I have to pay to use it, as long as I know.

Reasons for switching to Heroku

Because I needed something easier to use and that was affordable.

Excellent Platform as a service provider with good support!

We have greate Experience with Heroku till now, we have deployed multiple Web-apps through Heroky and they all are running smoothly without any issues. i would highly recommend heroku, they also have few service available for free so one can use it to test their system or can use it to test the Web-app performance.

PROS

Heroku is a trusted PAAS provider Available in the market, they support Variety of Programming Languages and databases. one can easily integrate it with any other third party Source control or versioning control software to track the source code and other things. We can use it to deploy modern Web-Application written in various programming languages.

CONS

Heroku is a great service provider till now but it is bit expensive at other side, they provides Quality support though but services could be little cheaper. they supports lots of software and tools but i didnt find the comprehensive Documentation to integrate the tools and services they should add documentation for those.

Easiest Way to Get Started

Despite the minor drawbacks, my overall experience with Heroku has been great. The platform's ease of use, coupled with its extensive plugin ecosystem, has made it a top choice for hosting and deploying my applications. It has significantly streamlined my development process and allowed me to focus on building quality software without getting bogged down in infrastructure complexities.

PROS

One of the standout features of Heroku is its user-friendly nature. The platform provides a seamless experience, even for those who are new to hosting applications. Additionally, the vast plugin ecosystem offers a wide range of options for extending the functionality of my applications, making it convenient to incorporate additional services and features without much hassle.

CONS

some of the core plugins, like Postgres, could benefit from more flexibility. Adjusting certain configurations or customizing the setup can be a bit limited, which may be a drawback for users with specific requirements.Another aspect I found less appealing is the recent involvement of Salesforce in the billing process. This shift towards an enterprise-focused approach may not be ideal for small businesses or startups looking for a more agile and flexible billing solution.

Reason for choosing Heroku

The main reason I opted for Heroku is its unparalleled ease of use. From the initial setup to the continuous deployment process, Heroku simplifies the entire application lifecycle. Its intuitive interface and user-friendly features have saved me time and effort, enabling me to quickly set up and manage my applications with minimal friction.Overall, Heroku provides a hassle-free experience for developers, making it an excellent choice for those who want to focus on building their applications rather than dealing with infrastructure intricacies.

Like it so far!

I love working withHheroku, but I don't have to pay for it cause the company I work for pays for it. If I was working on a side project that didn't have a very big tech budget I would probably choose something else. If the company can afford it though Heroku would be my first pick

PROS

- Being able to roll back my app is HUGE! - Easy to deploy from the command line (although my work has it setup so when I commit to master in github it deploys the latest version) - Has a nice CLI to get info, restart the app, and such... - Has add ons which easily integrates with the app. - Easy to setup different environments of the same app. - Easily see how the app is doing.

CONS

Heroku interface is really nice to work with, but some of the add-ons don't have the best interface. I know the code for those add-ons are not made by Heroku, but I wish Heroku had higher standards for their add-ons. There are some super useful add-ons that just have little things about them that are weird or confusing. Plus most of the add-ons I have used don't have a very pretty interface. If Heroku put a little pressure on them to clean up their user experience that would be helpful.

Heroku is a powerful PaaS with unmatched support

Heroku has allowed us to focus on our product and outsource the majority of our dev ops workload, which has been highly effective at our (small) size.

PROS

We've been using Heroku since our product launch for much of our backend infrastructure, and we remain absolutely smitten with the fantastic product and support we've gotten. Heroku strikes a great balance between the responsibilities of running everything on bare metal yourself and a more managed infrastructure, and we've been very happy with the trade-offs here. To top it off, their support is phenomenal, and, in the case of highly technical issues, consistently escalate support queries to the right technical person internally.

CONS

Heroku can definitely be pricier than running your own show directly on your own servers, or even in a virtualized environment like AWS that's definitely one critique we've seen from colleagues, however in our case that cost is more than justified for what we get in return for it.

My take on Heroku

I've been happy with the tools Heroku has offered me. However, for a user that knows her way around cloud providers these might provide a more fine grained control over their application's availability.

PROS

A decent free to use offer, and a overwhelmingly well thought paid plan. Integration with Git and other Control Version systems is mature and well thought, allowing the team to make sure the application is always up and running.

CONS

The interface is not always as responsive as one would wish for, also the CLI version is not yet as intuitive as I would expect. Migrating your application from Heroku to another provider could also be easier.

Reason for choosing Heroku

The process to set up an application on Heroku is way simpler.

New to cloud development? Heroku is a great place to start with low startup cost to scale up

Mostly positive. Before steering folks towards Azure/AWS, I would refer them to try out Heroku first to wet their feet.

PROS

I was up and running in about an hour. I didn't understand very much about cloud ops, or deployments in the cloud and they made it simple enough to use--even interesting. I love the company behind Heroku; their vision is leading the CI/CD industry with affordable and scalable web development.

CONS

Dynamos were just plain confusing. Coming as someone from a pure client/server architecture background who'd never worked in the cloud, it seemed a little scary. Heroku (at the time ) didn't offer a lot of training or documentation on how their pay-to-play model worked. Thankfully, they had a free tier, but I'm not sure it's around anymore :(

Hard to beat platform for application deployment

Overall, I love using Heroku and will keep using it as my preference for application deployment. The integration with Terraform and GitHub actions leave me more time to spend writing code.

PROS

Heroku's platform is very intuitive and easy to learn as a developer. The APIs available make it possible to automate lots of the CI/CD pipeline which cuts back on tedious tasks and lets developers have more time for developing. It's also possible to integrate with Terraform for easy and consistent setup between various applications.

CONS

The removal of the free tier is my least favorite aspect. Free tiers are great for proof of concepts and low mileage/hobby applications. It's a great way to get toes in the door, which leads to whole accounts being set up.

Great PaaS for your application

PROS

Heroku is a great Platform as a Service product. You can set up a server and deploy it in a few minutes (at least a ruby on rails application). Integration with git is awesome!. You can scale your app with only a couple of clicks and is as transparent as it should be. If you don't want to spend money with a dev ops and managing server this is the solution for you.

CONS

They only con I will say is the pricing, even though you will save a lot of money in your initial stage, since you won't need someone to manage the infrastructure of your application, when you app start to grow, also will your invoices.

Amazing way to bootstrap your online service.

Getting my startup up and going without having to have a IT/OPS co-founder. Amazing way to get your product out to search the market space.

PROS

The ability to pick and choose services and scale that fit your budget is amazing on this stack. One is able to get a product out the door *FREE* and then scale and grow as necessary, and with some good guidance as one finds their market.

CONS

The black box nature of the solution is a pro and a con. I find sometimes wanting to know more about what is going on in the fabric of the solution to track down why something isn't working. However, this is small in comparison to the benefit it provides.

Best platform for hobby and production apps

Best platform for hobby and production apps, great documentation and very easy for ruby/rails apps.

PROS

Heroku has a very intuitive and well-organized dashboard, it offers a simple vision of your apps' databases, with tools like backup & restore, access to a console inside the database instance, and simple statistics. The deploy is only a git push to a previously configured remote, and the output is shown just right in the terminal, which is very good because I don't need to open a browser to verify the deploy status.

CONS

Therefore the documentation is very complete and full of support links and articles, maybe it could be better suited for junior developers, because some things seems a little out of order, like, they don't say that you need to provision a database instance, but already give you the database setup commands.

Reason for choosing Heroku

Simple of use, free-tier without expiring date, documentation and very easy for ruby/rails apps.
