Teach to learn, learn to teach

As a software engineer it is important to always be up to speed with the code being written in your company. Even when the code doesn't directly impact what you're working on today, it does impact your code. We use Geekbot each day in Slack to request engineers post updates to what they've learned. By doing this, we're able to monitor potential areas of mentorship. We are a company that thrives on learning, and Geekbot makes the overall understanding of how we're doing that, much easier.

PROS

Geekbot makes it very easy to prompt our engineers via Slack, offering a couple of very easy straightforward questions: What did you learn today; How will you use that in production? This ease of use and consistency makes viewing the results very fast. Of course, if they are simply too busy, it can easily be dismissed, so it doesn't become annoying, and therefore continues to be used.

CONS

I can honestly say that since using Geekbot, I have not found a single issue with it. Maybe we could use more of its potential, but for what we need right now, it is 100% the correct tool for the job.

Geekbot is easy to use and makes daily reporting easy

I think it's one of the easier bots to set up and leave running, and I should probably look at their other features too!

PROS

We use Geekbot for our agile team's standup reports, with features like flexible scheduling for individual or channel requests, accommodating different time zones, delivering reports to the client channel for visibility, providing comment notifications, and its easy setup and customization options, allowing us to effortlessly streamline our standups and enhance collaboration. I am also a fan of telling it I'm on vacation and it knows when to restart itself.

CONS

Sometimes when I have a bot running for too many teams / channels I do miss an update. It tries to be smart enough that it doesn't have me reporting on more than one thing at a time (a conflict I have created as an admin) and it pauses one when the next one starts. So, I can forget to go back to the paused one.

Reason for choosing Geekbot

I like the ease of set up and the ability to choose users' time zone ranges for the report, so everyone across the world can answer their bot in their first couple of hours of work, regardless of where they are located.

Simple to use, Easy to "Break"

PROS

Integration with Slack is incredibly useful and simple. Keeps myself as well as my team up to date with progress.

CONS

If I forget to post a response for a check-in and decide to do that the next day before the check-in time, I will not be prompted for a response. Geekbot should ask for a response exactly as scheduled and should not depend on whether you've given a response that day or not.

Saves meeting time, brings a human element to virtual working

Geekbot has been a game-changer for our Monday standups. No longer do we lose time in long, drawn-out meetings; instead, we quickly get an update from each team member on what they are working on and if there are any blockers. The ability to turn these updates into threads for further discussion keeps our communication streamlined. We can ask questions, provide feedback, or offer help right within the thread. It's boosted our efficiency tremendously.

PROS

But what I like most about Geekbot is the level of transparency it introduces in our processes. With each member's tasks laid out, we can see how our individual efforts align with the team's overall objectives. It's not just about managing workloads anymore, it's about seeing the bigger picture and understanding how every piece fits into the puzzle.Moreover, I appreciate how Geekbot has brought a human element to our team's virtual workspace. The "Friday Kudos" is such a simple, yet powerful tool. It not only lets us acknowledge our colleagues' contributions but also fosters a positive, supportive environment. It's a great way to end the week, reminding us that our hard work doesn't go unnoticed and boosts morale. In a remote working scenario, it's this kind of appreciation that goes a long way in creating a strong, connected team.

CONS

While I appreciate many of Geekbot's features, there's one aspect that could use some improvement. I wish they offered a more cost-effective package for "Up to X users." As it stands, anyone added to our Slack channel automatically becomes part of our Geekbot user count (this is the easiest setting), which can lead to unexpected increases in our monthly bill.

Does well for standups..wish they had more templates.

PROS

What we really liked about Geekbot is that it is simple and easy to set up and use. Geekbot gives us a snapshot of what the whole team is working on each day. This helps managers keep track of deliverables, reduces the formation of silos in the team as well as fosters an environment of support and learning as the app enable team members to flag obstacles earlier and receive the help they need. In terms of task management, the app has helped managers track deliverables across the team. It has also helped increase ownership, consciousness and accountability among individual team members for planning and executing their daily tasks, especially as the team is now fully remote.

CONS

Customisable templates is an area where Geekbot could improve - they just don't have as many templates as their competitors do. I would like to see more templates around process like employee onboarding, which Standuply offers.

Efficient Daily Standups with Geekbot

Our overall experience with Geekbot has been positive. It has transformed our daily standups from a time-consuming task to a quick and efficient process. The tool's ability to integrate with other platforms and provide actionable insights has been a game-changer for our team's productivity and collaboration.

What I liked most about Geekbot is its intuitive interface and seamless integration with our communication platforms. CONS

Nothing for now - Just setting up can be little bit time taking initially - Managing standups in private channels for Slack etc.

It has helped my clients stay focused and communicate

PROS

Geekbot has helped my team become more communicative and collaborate as well. They have kept in better touch with me and GeekBot has saved me time by generating automatic check-in's for my clients.

CONS

I would like to see a feature with the Slack integration that allows check-in responses to be delivered right back to the DM with my clients rather than another channel in Slack. This is a bit clunky for me and hard to keep track of responses in two different chat threads. It's hard for my clients too.

Indispensable insight into what the heck I do all day

As an extremely busy senior practictioner in a remote startup, geekbot gives me invaluable insight both into what my coworkers are doing and into what the heck I actually do. Along with Harvest, I often use it to answer questions about where my time went yesterday and where today's time is intended to go. You might think I'd be annoyed by the daily questions, but in fact I am greatly reassured that my time is being intelligently spent and, when there are problems meeting those goals, that I understand why. I don't think remote teams should operate without it.

PROS

* Reminds me to give my standup report, without overdoing it * Together with Harvest, allows me to piece together a narrative of what I actually do * Zero-friction self-management tool

CONS

* I used to say "a pain to edit later," but they fixed that: if you edit what you've entered in the geekbot channel, your corrections immediately show up in the group channel. Nice.

Great for dispersed teams.

PROS

Really easy to setup, only moments to get going. Adjusting the reports and adding/removing participants is a breeze through the nicely designed web UI. Also, this bot is great for suitable for check-ins of at any interval about any topic also. The flexibility around where the answers go in slack is nice, all permissions are handled through slack for this viability of the report answers.

CONS

Finding really difficult to fault this software. The only thing I would mention is that to the best of my knowledge a thread cant be created per answered question of the report in slack, only for all questions as a whole. There have been times where I have a few comments of a users report and it would be nice to categorise them per answer rather than per report.

Improved Productivity

Geekbot allowed us to implement daily standup culture within our team without leaving Slack. We are a distributed small team that has members from 3 different countries, and we manage our daily standups + retrospectives through Geekbot. So far it has helped everyone to get up-to-speed with how to approach the project management culture we are trying to implement and it allowed everyone to see the progress being made, documented and openly appreciated.

PROS

It is easy to use. You just set it up and that's it, it is completely integrated with Slack, so you don't need to go to the dashboard to manage anything, you can handle a lot of stuff by just communicating with the bot. It is really easy to use and allows keeping everyone up to date.

CONS

It failed once or twice throughout our whole usage which caused some questions to be delivered late, but those were only small glitches. Overall, it is a pretty stable product.

Geekbot supports me in managing my remote team

PROS

I have built a habit waking up and then joining my team's standup meeting. I love this product as I can provides me with data on how my team is feeling and at the same time I know what everyone is working on, which is sometimes hard when your run a remote company

CONS

Nothing comes to mind....Well maybe if the moment I post my stand up update, Geeky would order my daily coffee. That would be cool :)

Overall experience is good

PROS

The product is very much useful specially for technology . We can even attach files and send it to the team where swiftly. The most interesting feature of the product is shortcut commands.

CONS

Its difficult to send multiple text. We have create snippet and then send it.

Best slackbot for doing standup meetings!

PROS

All the standups are customizable. You can have many teams as you like, each with a different standup, including questions and schedules. We've used it daily in our team for more than 6 months and it's totally part of our daily routine.

CONS

The leak of support for some languages on default answers. You can skip some questions or the entire report, but you have to use the specific keywords. Customize those words would be great.

Geekbot is the best way to run scrum or standup meeting in slack

PROS

- Its quite simple and easy to use standup bot for startups - It saves lot of time in meetings

CONS

- There is no option to snooze the notifications when Im out of office, or when I dont want to participate in the post standup notification - The ping would sometime take some time to load. Its not always accurate on time.

Great for asychronous daily stand-ups

PROS

With a distributed dev team in different time zones we found this was a better way to do our daily stand-ups.

CONS

Works as advertised. My only challenge has been getting a 100% rate... but that's my problem, not Geekbot's ;)

Excellent Slack Bot to run Standups

Excellent tool to hold standups with on Slack started using it during the pandemic as a way to run e-version of the standup but not easy on Zoom/Teams calls so doing it on Slack made it not only seamless but efficient. The outcomes of projects also improved due to the tracking via standups and cross collaboration and support provided by each other from the answers they provided to the bot were posted in a dedicated standup channel all providing invaluable experiences for the students i was working with.

PROS

Ability to customise it to suit my business needs

CONS

Cost of it but i do believe the product is well made so i would not fault the payment.

Geekbot makes standups easy with our 100% distrubuted team

PROS

I like the web interface to manage the standups. I also like the dead simple integration with Slack and all of the slack commands you can use to pause standup updates (like if you're on vacation), and to start new standup reports. I like that Geekbot does everything we need it to do without additional complexity and without being intrusive.

CONS

It costs money, but ultimately what it offers makes it worth it. I've tried other hacky solutions and they just aren't worth the headache.

Easy to use slack bot for people using scrum and struggling with daily standups.

Improve our daily standups with a remote team.

PROS

It's an easy way to handle daily standups when doing scrum. Lets everyone know what they're working on for keeping a record on tasks. It's really easy to use, convenient and can be customized to your needs (for example, pausing the standup when going on vacation or something similar).

CONS

The fact it's a bot makes it easier to ignore what other people are doing, instead of having to hear them when doing a daily standup in person. It's easy to disable the standup and sometimes you may be bothered by having to remember to set off the standup for a couple of days.

If you're the kind who doesn't see value in paying for software. GeekBot is about to change that.

PROS

GeekBot helps get teams on the same page. We are currently a team split between 3 timezones and 4 locations with serious concerns on inter-team communication. Moving to GeekBot almost instantly has helped bring the team closer to each other. We did some smart bot creation so all of the updates are not going into one channel. This way we have achieved not only company wide but also intra-team communication.

CONS

Difficult to track who all have completed their Daily Updates without leaving Slack. Everything else is super simple and easy to use.
