The CAT tools that I feel safe to use for my translation projects

In overall, Memsource has been the go to tool for me among the other CAT tools since we started using it and I aim to utilise it as much as I can for running a project more smoothly with peace of mind without thinking of packages and compatibility or server errors etc.

PROS

I know that when I have a project that I can work with Memsource there is a smaller chance something might go wrong. It gives me more control over keeping track of the progress of the translators working on the projects and more freedom when setting up the projects.

CONS

Only thing is it might get slow if the document is too large but desktop editor saves the day in projects like that. What can be improved is the price can be more competitive thus we can utilise more project manager licenses and it would give us more translator license because sometimes we need to go in users and deactivate some of them to make way for new users that can work on new projects.

Vendor Response

Thank you for your review Aykut! Glad to hear you're making use of the desktop editor and finding Memsource useful.

One of the best web based CAT tools

memsource is a web based tool and in that sense it is less powerful than client based tools ("applications"), however, it is the best online tool on the market. Having said that, an offline editor is available where online projects can be downloaded to.

PROS

Unlike other CAT tools, memsource takes into account the needs of an arguably very important stakeholder group: translators. The user interface is self-explanatory, which makes it easy to get started. All items are where you would expect them to be. Also, the "aesthetics" of the user interface are helping me to translate. Colors are "logical" (rather than distracting) and all menus and panels are where they should be. This seems like a minor point, but when you stare 8h at a user inteface and you actually focus more on understanding the user interface than doing your work, this will result in reduced productivity and quality. memsource handles large files well (it doesn't crash, basically) and large files can be displayed on-screen without the need of cycling through different pages. You can just scroll down and read the entrie file.

CONS

The search and replace dialog misses some options. Only basic search and replace options can be carried out. In the QA dialog, QA results are displayed in a structured manner, however, it sometimes requires extra time to search and fix the actual segment. Fixing inconsistencies for instance is tedious because it requires manual searching for the inconsistency in the file.

Reason for choosing Phrase Localization Platform

We have to use memsource because our clients require us to do so. They are lending the license to us for the duration of the project.

Not the greatest CAT tool

I would far rather use Trados than Memsource.

PROS

I can't think of a single feature of Memsource that I prefer over other CAT tools.

CONS

Lacks "smart pasting" functions as found in other CAT tools. Search tools less useful than other CAT tools. TM look-up tools less effective than other CAT tools. Can't easily leverage over a decades worth of TM that I've built up in other CAT tools.

Vendor Response

Hey Chris - thanks for sharing your feedback! Every translator has their favorite tool and we're sorry Memsource isn't yours. Thanks anyways for working with our software and sharing what you think could be improved, we appreciate it.

Great with more features like builtin Machine learning translation

PROS

The ability to use online, and the integration of other translation services like Deepl, Google AutoML, etc.

CONS

I would like to see more robust features like builtin Machine learning engine using the existing data from Term bases and Translation Memories to automatic translation runs

Reasons for switching to Phrase Localization Platform

Memsource integration with other services like Deepl, Google AutoML, etc.

Vendor Response

Hi Jimmy, thanks for the suggestions on machine learning functionality, I've passed them on to our product team :)

Great product.

I have completed a lot of projects in Memsource and it has improved over time. I like it a lot. Wish to see offline capability.

PROS

Works without glitches. Doesn't load PC. Easy to use.

CONS

Requires Internet connection. Almost no offline capability.

Reasons for switching to Phrase Localization Platform

Large TMs load myPC too much. With Memsource there is no such problems since servers do all the work.

A must for your localization requirements

We're managing the localization of several projects, with different projects for each one and it's being very easy. The best part is the product team can edit the texts without the development team participation which makes it easier and quicker to adapt one text. Both teams are very happy with this solution.

PROS

The main reason to select is there are no limits about how many copies you can create. A feature which I really love is that one called "jobs" which you can use to assign tasks to your colleagues.

CONS

I didn't find any problem yet. I had some problems when importing nested json file, I lost two translations. But it was just 2 of 2000 and when you go to the locales section is very easy to see there are 2 missing translations. I've imported it again and problem solved so it isn't a big deal at all.

Reasons for switching to Phrase Localization Platform

POEditor has limitations on the number of copies you can create, and from my humble point of view, they're very short for the price.

Best tool to manage and control your translations!

Using PhraseApp overall is much much better than the translations I have done with spreadsheets and by using JSON manually. As a web/app developer, I want my documentation to be available in multiple languages so as to facilitate my projects to a wider public and create a good impression. Translation for docs play a huge role in maintaining the open source repositories and PhraseApp helped me achieve those on my open source projects. I am happy with PhraseApp and recommend it to developers like me or to anyone who want to translate stuff on fly to multiple languages!

PROS

There are many many things I like about PhraseApp and pinpointing to the one I like the most would be a difficult task. First of all PhraseApp got an elegant and convenient UI which makes working with it so much easier. The panels are all nice and shiny and the search works smooth. I use PhraseApp to achieve a streamlined localization process and have translations on the go and translating web/app content from English to *insert a language in which you want the documentation to be* has never been much easier for the developers, who add translations to multiple languages so as to comply with documentation standards and have a wider reach with the app/website. The best feature of PhraseApp is the ability to work on different projects and switch between them so efficiently!

CONS

Well I have used PhraseApp for quite a time and till now I do not have a single complain. Maybe I have not explored enough features to have some issues but all is really going well for me and I don't have anything to dislike and complain about! Well there is a bit of a learning curve that comes with PhraseApp as it has so many features to explore but this comes with all the SaaS, so it is not a big deal! You'll get a hang of it once you have had a hands-on experience with some projects using PhraseApp. P.S - I don't know if the features exists or not, but I would like to have the ability to integrate PhraseApp with a third party email management system so as to create new avenues with my new projects!

Perfect tool to manage your translations for a multilingual website

PROS

As UX Writer in our company, I am using PhraseApp daily to change translations, fill in new ones and keep a look on changes that happen in the different projects. I love the simple and easy-to-understand interface, which enables everyone to immediately start using this tool. The search is really good to find all text resources containing a certain word, in order to adapt them for example. I always directly see if a wording has been changed and needs my verification. I also really appreciate all the little helpful features, like for example marking a wording change as minimal, so translators of other languages know they don't have to recheck their translations of this text.

CONS

It would be great if it was easier to add screenshots/images to the different text resources, so the writers know better where in the product the text will be and what the context is.

Great for app internationalisation

When I learned about it, it became the preferred way to handle localisation on my mobile apps. It makes it easier when you're working with multi-platform teams to have to do the work of translating something only once. Then the other teams can just synchronise their projects and use the newly created translations.

PROS

Being able to apply custom tags to the items allows me to specify which tags to synchronise on my mobile applications. As an example, I can say that a translation has the tags "Android" and "Home", and then I can create a rule on my Android app that creates a resource file for translations with that same tags. It makes my projects really organised.

CONS

I would love to see enforced mechanisms for better naming conventions. There are a lot of "fights" between different platform teams (Android, iOS) regarding naming, and it would be cool to have a convention suggested by the PhraseApp platform.

Simple and efficient

Great! I rarely had problems, rarely find my self in a place where i need more functionality then the ones already existing. And the times i had some issues the team answer quickly and with lot of knowledge.

PROS

- easy to use as non technical person with the interface - easy to use as developer. Simply update a json file with two easy command line - the team is helpful and fast to replay

CONS

The web interface for different project it can be improve. We found our self often to click on language then project and then choose the language again. A painful point was the impossibility to push different versions of the json file but since some months the team develop a git-like functionality with branches and so on and it solve this problem perfectly.

Excellent CAT and translation management system for freelancers and small LSPs

Overall I am very much satisfied with Memsource, and I have recommended it to other translators. For small LSPs or freelancers working primarily for end clients, I don't think there is a better solution out there, even for significantly more money. Best of all Memsource is exceptionally reliable and responsive to (the very few) issues that come up.

PROS

Memsource is easy to use and has a relatively low learning curve, especially as compared to other CAT tools and translation management systems. These two aspects (CAT and management) are integrated quite seamlessly, which should be a big selling point for small LSP clients. Other than that, I find the whole system to be exceptionally responsive and reliable, and the Desktop Editor to be the 'quickest' of all the CAT tools I have used. It may not have quite as many features as something like Trados, but it seems to have everything you need.

CONS

Oddly specific as this may sound, my biggest issue with Memsource is the built-in spell checker - it just isn't very good, at least in English. It responds slowly, flags words that are not misspelled, flags parts of words, and misses rather obvious misspellings. When I right-click to correct an error, the word I am looking for always seems to be at the bottom of the list of suggestions. Other than that, the integration with MT engines could be improved with respect to in-text formatting tags.

Reason for choosing Phrase Localization Platform

Firstly because Memsource is much easier to use and has a very low learning curve - one might reasonably call it 'intuitive'. Secondly, Memsource is much more cost-effective (value for money).

Vendor Response

Thanks so much for your review of Memsource! Thank you as well for your feedback around our spellchecker, our Product Team knows it is an issue and is working on a plan for the future. Otherwise, glad to hear you're finding Memsource reliable and responsive and good enough to recommend to others!

A great alternative as a web-based and software CAT tool

Memsource is an interesting alternative as a CAT Tool, featuring a web/cloud-based and a software version (and both work perfectly together). For those working in the Translation and Localization industry, it is a great idea to get used to Memsource, as you may be asked to work with it by a new agency or direct client. It is a cost-effective option, easy to use and very stable and light to work both online and offline.

PROS

Memsource is a light-weight CAT tool which brings almost all the same features that other flagship options (like MemoQ, Trados Studio, etc). It works smoothly, it is intuitive and has a good integration with their web-based option, so you can download project files to work offline and upload it back to your client/company server.

CONS

For those used to other CAT tools, you may miss one or another option. Overall, it seems that Memsource is a more 'basic' alternative, which will give you all the most used features, but may not be as robust as some competitors when it comes to filtering options, TM management, batch tasks, etc.

Vendor Response

Thank you for your review, Ignacio! Glad to hear you're finding Memsource easy and intuitive to use both on and offline.

Easy to use product

We save much time regarding the automatic notifications. And I would like to highlight the great customer support! Every time our company needs help, the support team investigates the problem and finds a solution (usually within short time).

PROS

As translator with experience, the product is easy to use. This has to do with the displayed shortcuts and the user interface in your own language. Furthermore, Memsource saves much time due to the automatic notifications. I can access my job through the sent email and the product sends an email, when I have completed my job.

CONS

In some cases I would like to have more transparency (information) regarding changes in the Translation Memory and Term Base (in the form of a version history). It would be great, if pictures could be uploaded in the Term Base, too.

Easy to use and best online solution for translation I ever used

If you are looking for an online translation tool that is easy to use and can handle many languages as you want. If you are looking for a good solution to manage multiple applications translation in one place. If you are looking for a translation tool that can be managed not only by your developers' team. If you are looking for a solution where there are multiple users managing the translation of your applications and you would like to avoid translation collision.

PROS

The UI is really simple to use and the API has good documentation which makes the integration with our services easy. You can set up multiple projects and languages. They also have integration with other services like Github, Gitlab,... Also, translations are not handled only by developers but they can be shared across different sectors of the company. Multiple projects can make use of the same translation database.

CONS

I don't dislike it, but I would like to see a way to merge or associate a duplicate key. In a big project, it is quite easy to have duplicate values with different key names. And will be cool to have a group mechanism, so in case you update one value of one language, it will reflect in other keys too. Also, have a warning tool in case you have different keys with the same value.

PhraseApp streamlined our localisation process

PROS

PhraseApp managed to completely formalise and streamline our localisation process to a point where localisation is no problem at all. Every person involved in the project profits from this tool: - The devs are able to easily create new keys and at stub translations. - The management is able to correct mistakes without code changes required. - The stakeholder himself can use PhraseApp to customise the strings further as he sees fit witouht the devs having to take an action. - Always up to date translations using our ci or by performing one terminal command.

CONS

I currently don‘t see anything too bad with this service. But maybe a feature request: A PhraseApp SDK that allows for changing localisation even after deploying? Not a con but this would make an all ready great product to an amazing product.

Easy to use, fast to learn

PROS

Memsource is designed to be used easily and fast to learn, the funzions are few but necessary, for a translator I think it is quite good to use for short to medium text. For long text sometimes the machine gets stuffed.

CONS

I have tried to integrate with other software but it seems it is not design for this. So sometimes it is not easy for a translator to work with various agencies when each of them has their preferiable software. My term base could not be concentrated in one place.

Great tool for translating extensive projects into several languages

PROS

We've used Phraseapp for more than two years now, and we are very happy with it. It is very easy to use so that new translators do not need to be trained, they can simply start translating. With the smart integration of asking for the verification of translations, translators can proof-read each others' translations without missing anything. It also allows you to export/import which makes it possible to search and replace certain phrases easily if needed. Phraseapp is a great tool to translate extensive projects into several languages and to easily update those languages.

Good platform to manage and curate your content

We use PhraseApp as a CMS for our worldwide marketplace. We also use Localise, but PhraseApp has quite more features. It only lacks some good UX improvements to make it very very good. We almost don't use their built-in translations system, as they're quite weak. It's better to have a dedicated agency/company for that sole purpose, as you will want to give feedback about translations to make them better for the next order, but you can't do that with PhraseApp. Overall, a very good tool!

PROS

- You can manage special pluralizations (such as happens with Polish language) in a very easy way - It allows you to have various locales (aka languages) and it's fast to switch between them - You have a history of changes and you can see who did it, and it's easy to revert to a previous one - You can give individual permissions to users - Super good customer support when you have doubts or any problem

CONS

- You can order translations via PhraseApp, but the quality it's not so good (you receive them fast, though)

Memsource Review from Agora Vision

The website had a very sleek, powerful, and premium feel. There were a plethora of features that we could use in a variety of different circumstances, so it certainly didn't limit you to one workflow. The translation and editing experience was fast and easy, so we could get linguists to come on board and work with no huge issues at all. Overall, I am very pleased with the Memsource software, and look forward to seeing what the people at Memsource do with it in the future.

PROS

The software combines so many diverse and useful features into an all-in-one package. There was no need to use any other tool, you could simply complete your project from start to finish using this software.

CONS

Our biggest problem was that the ideal engine we wanted to use, Google Translate, would not incorporate well with the Memsource software because the language we were using, Central Kurdish, had two separate tags. On Memsource, it was "Central Kurdish", but on Google Translate, it was "Kurdish Sorani". These two tags refer to the exact same language, but since they have different names, we could not use Google Translate in our workflow. It was frustrating how a small tag error like this prevented us from the machine translation part of the software.

Memsource pros and cons

Memsource can accelerate our work because, thanks to the side by side view in the editor, there is no risk to lose our spot when reviewing long paragraphs. It also facilitates searches for consistency purposes. However, when confirming segments, we put our names on it although the text may need review. Also, we have to be careful not to rely too much on the translations proposed by the system.

PROS

Viewing the source and target texts side by side, segment by segment, so the relevant excerpts are easier to locate when translating and revising.

CONS

There is no longer a draft concept. As soon as we confirm a segment, everybody working for the client can see our name on it, although it may need revision.

Awesome tool to manage translations and multi language systems

By properly setting up teams I don't need to worry about who to reach within the organisation in order to get some translation done. Since we integrated Phrase with our CI/CD pipelines we don't need to be dependant on other people translating texts anymore and delaying our releases.

PROS

How easy it is to setup multiple teams and ensure the required parties are notified when a new translation is required on a specific key! Intuitive and fast interface! In my case, Phrase's flexible API makes it easy to integrate with other flows and include translations in automated build processes, for instance.

Very intuitive translation platform with nice features

Managing translations is always a pain. With Phrase our company could solve that pain to a bare minimum. With the integration of machine-translations we could even cut costs to verification-only. Small hint: provide a mobile app for translators. This would boost translator efficiency even more!

PROS

- very intuitive and well working translator interface - speed of service in general - the options to manage users, roles and rights - RESTFUL APIs to integrate service into GitLab projects - machine translation via multiple services

CONS

- searching keys or string content is not always returning proper results - machine translations sometimes deletes spaces (mostly after placeholders) resulting in errors

Easy-to-use AIO solution that will fit most business needs

Having dealt with Memsource in the past both as a project manager and translator I can safely say that it makes working with multilingual projects so much easier thanks to the project management and translation process being so (literally) close to each other. If you are looking for a convenient way of bringing localization management to your business, Memsource is an important tool to consider.

PROS

Thanks to its clever combination of CAT tool functions and project management features, Memsource caters to a variety of user groups, ranging from small LSPs to bigger companies. The editor is very intuitive and includes a lot of features you also find in solutions offered by other CAT tool providers (filters, live preview, etc.). Memsource cares a lot about the user experience and manages to introduce more and more features that help establish solid workflows. Thanks to API support, integration of third party solutions is done easily.

CONS

Memsource is probably not the tool most power users who are accustomed to more comprehensive translation editors would pick. Managing TMs (in the sense of cleaning and upgrading) is still possible, but does not come with the same benefits more feature-packed solutions like Trados Studio offer. QA features are solid, but could be improved in the future to avoid the use of external software.

Vendor Response
