A free AAA game engine with the power of AWS cloud and Twitch

It's a complete platform to develop and share modern games for PC, console, and mobiles.

PROS

A new game engine that integrates well with Amazon cloud services and utilizes realistic rendering of CryEngine. Suitable for developing games that rely high on cloud computing. Integration with Twitch makes it easier to build a fanbase. Above all Lumberyard is free with no hidden fees and strings attached.

CONS

It's a new game engine so it's harder to find help with errors. Cloud support is only limited to AWS.

Reason for choosing Amazon Lumberyard

For an easy cloud integration

Reasons for switching to Amazon Lumberyard

Some of our multiplayer games needed cloud features, where Amazon Lumberyard exactly meets our needs.

Incomplete but Amazing

PROS

The best things about Lumberyard are definitely the tight native integration with AWS and Twitch, which is booming these days for game streaming. The out of the box support it provides for multiplayer is really convenient, even rivalling the offerings of heavyweights such as Unity and Unreal. Also the access to the free source code is a game changer offering in such a AAA game engine. It is also completely free with no revenue sharing or subscription fees.

CONS

I really don't like how restricted it is to the Amazon platform. You have to use AWS when you need multiplayer support or when deploying your games. You can't choose any alternatives that are better suited to your needs or those that are more economical. Also, the documentation is lacking which is makes it feel a bit more stressful when trying to get into this engine.

Amazon Lumberyard (To Infinity & Beyond)

This was my first time at attempting anything of this magnitude and I must say it has been quite the experience from day one until now. One thing's for sure though, it has been a rollercoaster ride seeing Lumberyard go through its growing pains but in the end, I believe it will prevail through it all.

PROS

You can develop games on various platforms such as PC, Android, Ios, MacOs, PS4 and Xbox. It's free to use so if you feel like getting your hands dirty and making your very own game come to life, you can certainly take a gander.

CONS

If you don't have a background as a software developer, then this might turn out to be quite mind boggling. The system requirements needed to run the engine are not mediocre either. You better have at least 14gb of RAM to spare, a 3GHZ quad-core processor and a semi-high-end GPU to render all of these graphics on your machine.

Simply Amazing

I work closely with developers in numerous Games companie. i administer and monitor these services providing cost reports and assistance where required. I have played games developed on this engine and they are simply sublime

PROS

> Increase productivity with better feature and content creation > Integrated with the worlds largest streaming sight, Twitch. > Manage work using modularity making your devs more efficient > Host your game with Amazons other services for a highly available and robust server system. > FREE! It is FREE! You only pay for the other AWS service you use which begs the question, are you on the cloud?

CONS

You are unable to distribute the engine you when you have customised the engine due to licence agreements. This is understandable but still disappointing if you have spent a large amount of time souping it up.

A bold Amazonian venture into the Game Engine world

As the game engine is still in its initial stages, and is pretty much restricted to AWS scenario, it is a bit difficult to use it as a primary tool for game creation. However, the experience all in all was a positive one and I would be open to revisiting this awesome tool sometime in the future again, after it has matured a bit.

PROS

I love the wonderful beginner tutorials provided by Lumberyard to get started. Its integrations with AWS and Twitch is pretty fantastic and works just as advertised. It also has decent 3D capabilities and the multiplayer service, GameLift is totally great when it comes to build multiplayer experiences. It also helps that the full C++ code is available to you, so that you can have a customized game engine ready for your games.

CONS

You are tied up with restrictions by Amazon in Lumberyard. Amazon's own services are pushed onto as your only choice for multiplayer services, cloud features among others. If you are not a big Amazon fan, then using Lumberyard will not be a good experience for the most part. And also, getting used to Lumberyard is a hassle if you are just starting out making games, it is recommended to get into it, after using Unity or Unreal.

Lumberyard is a great multi-level program.

PROS

From when it first became available, I've loved using Lumberyard. It's got so many features that are all in one place that you really can't go wrong. It also has improved massively over the years, with more to come I'm sure. Just like anything else, though, you'll want to experience with every tool for your project.

CONS

Sometimes it would break down on me, but with the level of improvements, I think they're ironing out a lot of issues. I can also see how some things could be confusing for new users in the UI

An Intuitive Gaming Engine.

I'm in regular contact with programmers from a variety of game studios. My job is to keep an eye on these services, providing cost reports and support as needed. Several games I've played on this engine have left me speechless.

PROS

The aesthetics are stunning, and the landscaping is very straightforward in terms of complexity. The Gizmo widget is easy to identify and has a better tooltip to explain what the cog is doing.

CONS

The software has some limits, as well as the design options available to you. There is no doubt that there is opportunity for further development.

Amazing Scripting

This engine has so many good uses, but if used and created properly it can go somewhere. Hopefully they will keep on with the improvements.

PROS

You can do so much for this program and it will definitely animate almost anything you want to design. You can design virtual landscape, open areas, ballparks, and so on that, it's endless. It's still in its early stages and there is so much that it can offer to others if it can only be simplified. It's a designer's dream come true.

CONS

Complicated if you can forward through some of the jabber and building a project is very tedious. But if you have time, then it worth the effort. Documentation is awful, but search out for the video tutorials for more help.

A very Amazon integrated game engine

PROS

The Lumberyard engine is very interesting when integrated with other services, like the Twitch streaming platform, wich allows viewers to interact to the game.

CONS

As a brand new engine, it still has issues to be fixed, but that's normal.

A really good start.

PROS

It seems to be brimming with potential. It has one of the biggest financial powerhouses behind it, so the support is likely to be there. Cross platform development

CONS

It can be just as cumbersome as CryEngine was. Learning curve, but it's not too severe. Total price is a little much for basic game design.

Excellent Engine

PROS

I have aided in game testing with Lumberyard for companies in my spare time. I noticed that, as companies switched to lumberyard from other engines (i.e. Cloud Imperium Games), bug fixes and utilities began coming through at a faster rate and the quality was much improved. This engine gives Crytek fidelity, but with excellent online support.

CONS

Nothing yet. It is fairly new, so there will be bugs to work through.

Great for making games!

I have been a big fan of amazon ever since I first got a kindle keyboard. Nothing is truly perfect but they make good products.

PROS

Good if you know what the heck you are doing. It can be easy to learn but has a bit of a learning curve to the software.

CONS

Can be difficult if you don't know what the heck you are doing. Bit of a learning curve. Takes some time to learn, so need to have some time set to the side.

All heart, no software

Poor - although, hopefully, things will change.

PROS

In principle, Lumberyard was an exciting competitor to the Unity and Unreal dominated landscape of game making. Promising to integrate much needed features like streaming integration, it was going to be an exciting tool for indie and educational game developers looking for something new.

CONS

However, in reality, what came out after the hype died down was a buggy mess. Broken features, code conflicts, and poor customer support unfortunately encourage me to warn others to stay away.

Lumberyard - Achievement Unlocked

PROS

I like how easy it is to bootstrap your game into Amazon's game engine. It provides a lot of functionality right out of the box and helps small development teams to build what they want without the worry of cost.

CONS

There is not a lot of downside to lumberyard. Amazon doesn't lock you into their servers or pricing or game availability.
