ECi M1 ERP Software


 

ECi M1 is a complete enterprise resource planning (ERP) system that automates financials, inventory, production, sales/quoting, and production planning. The software is designed for small to midsized firms who manufacture via repetitive, make-to-stock, make-to-order and/or engineer-to-order processes.

M1 offers its MRP module on a best-of-breed basis. The system also offers features for inventory barcoding, shop floor control, and customizable reporting with Crystal Reports.

Other key features include free “view only” licenses for buyers who just need to view and edit reports, “Smart Screen Technology” that automatically changes screens based on users’ input and a free M1 Design Studio that allows users to customize the system without accessing the source code or requiring extensive programming knowledge.  

ECi sells and supports software directly, not relying on dealers and value-added resellers. ECi currently supports over 1000 customers.

This is a simple program to learn the basics of with a multitude of options. The user interface is very straight forward. It is mostly all encompassing as far as ERP systems go. The options are plentiful, but pricey. Extra seats are a bit pricey. A good tool for a small business trying to track quote to cash.

The vendor is wonderful to work with. From the sales thru the president, their open door policy is forward thinking and provides customers with a sense of being taken care when they need it. The product M1 has proven to be the most customizable and flexible system I've dealt with in 36 years however I'm still learning more of what all it can do.

The least liked, even though it this is by no means a dislike on my part, for the product would be the way item master must be for the local bin and not being able to have multiple bins per one location for one item.
The vendor side would be the fresh talent they are with vs. Those with 20 plus yrs.

Recommendations

If you r in search of a small to med. Size fabrication or manufacturing erp solution, Call ECI and discuss M1. There are to many amazing functions to share so ask for a demo, you won't be sorry. Great solution!

The only thing that was good was the dashboard
The software appeared to be ideal for a company making thousands of components in production runs - the very thing that we don't do.

The software is extremely clunky. it seemed that anything that could be done with 1 click in our old program program takes 5 clicks.
Support was often vague - it didnt sound like support personell had the correct training
They sold us a web app that they said was up and running, which was a large influencer in our decision as we required remote access to the CRM, however they hadn't finished developing it.
They didn't seem to understand NZ laws
Overall, the recommendation made by the company seemed to be motivated by getting the sale, rather than providing a solution that was fit for purpose.

Recommendations

Look for simplicity. Check if your existing software(if you have something) has a add-on module. This is what we have done and we are getting on so much better as you don't have to re-learn everything.

I will have to compliment the trainer and the ECI Conference held in Orlando. I felt that all areas were fully addressed. Obviously as time goes on, more comfort and trust is gain in the product. Having been on Sage previously, I like how this is a real financial package although it can be cumbersome at times. I still have lots to learn about the entire package.

Recommendations

Make sure your contemplate everything in your setup which includes hosting - internal or external. Try your best to understand the power of the software, realize that there is a significant learning curve during the 1st 3-6 months and be patience in your transition.

The training and implementation was fantastic. The product is well suited for our needs and the cost tracking functionality is great. The greatest strengths of the software are inventory control, cost/labor tracking, and reporting.

The accounting functionality and process can be burdensome. While it does get the job done, incorporating a FIFO system with real time cost of goods sold entry would be much more advantageous. Currently M1 only offers average, standard, or last cost of goods sold, which can really make things difficult if inventory costs change. Additionally, not having "real-time" financials is frustrating. You don't get the "actual cost of goods sold" until an accounting entry is made, so you cannot track financials daily or weekly unless your accounting department has time to make this entry and reconcile it on that same interval. Granted, moving to the COGS program could fix this issue, but the additional work and potential for mistakes makes it easier to wait for financials.

Recommendations

If you do any type of manufacturing and/or have multiple locations, this software is fantastic. This is a very customizable platform that allows for tons of flexibility. With any ERP conversion, you have to prepare and put in the time to learn the software, so I strongly recommend doing that to make a successful transition.

Vendor has awesome support. We love how it brings all of our activities together in one program. We also like how we can customize the program to fit our needs since we are a very unique manufacturer that does many products under one roof. It has many 'cross checks' so we are making sure each department is doing exactly what they are supposed to which leads to accurate financials and job costing.

I feel like some of the modules we purchased were not fully explained enough or applicable to our usage. Fortunately, they recognized this and helped us to direct our purchases in a more advantageous direction for our business. There are also adjustments in the financials that everyone could benefit from and should not be made to customize it.

Recommendations

Make sure you compare apples to apples. This program is very powerful. I'm not sure how any one company would use everything there is to offer to it's fullest capability but the options are unimaginable for whatever small manufacturer uses it.

I love how everything is tied together. When in doubt I right click and see where that PO, Sales Order, Receipt, etc. has been used and what it is linked to.

Mostly it's a cosmetic thing. I've never been overly fond of how it's laid out but the next version should make that better and truly with time you just get used to it.

Recommendations

If you're looking for something to bring all aspects of your manufacturing this is your product. Be prepared for lots of legwork in the beginning with bringing in your parts and organizations (customers and vendors) but in the end it is all worth it. As with anything new there is a bit of a learning curve. We're a bit over a year into working with it and we are still learning and implementing some final things. It has been a great tool for us to bring everything together.

The product already has deep features but it has the flexibility which allows for code to be written by us to enhance the system. This allows us to get specific on certain methods we use that may not be stock methods for an industry.

Recommendations

When reviewing software be sure to look at 2 or 3 offerings. This permits a clearer understanding of what is available in general for ERP systems but also allows for questions to develop with each successive product demonstration. You will become wiser and what each system provides as your questions become sharper. Also, be absolutely clear how your company operates currently and those processes which are key, be sure to have each software company demonstrate or explain how that process could be performed.

Most expandable system for up and coming manufacturing companies that do mixed mode manufacturing for OEM equipment. Very complex equipment that requires many different disciplines of manufacturing.

I would like more training videos for standard usages and work flows.

Recommendations

Really get into the workflows when you are quoting. Give real world examples and don't the salespeople deviate from a direct answer to your question. Let the people who know the work flow in on the process of software selection.

The low cost of overhead to run M1 is its best feature. It is very robust, and runs day after day with minimal support required. M1 is very user friendly and intuitive. Also, the use of Crystal Reports on an SQL database allows for easy modification and development of reports that then are easily run from inside M1 giving users a seamless feel. We have had excellent support during implementation and post implementation.

Slow performance. Some reports of tools are at times very slow. Our Job Analysis report runs very slow at times. Usually when the quantity is more than 1 and the material quantity is more than 100.

Recommendations

Get a good understanding of current process in order to properly map your 'To Be' processes after learning the new system. Employees should be made aware of the necessity for processes changes and the consequences (specifically what happens to data) when those new process are not followed.

Overall architecture is well thought out from a flexibility, customization and IT standpoint. It uses standard database (MS SQL), reporting (Crystal reports) and customization (VB) languages. You can use their resources or find your own to dive as deep as you need to but you also can do quite a bit without being an IT professional.

Support experience ranges widely from good to very slow to respond. They have made efforts to improve and you see benefits slowly but it still isn't a good consistent support experience.

Recommendations

The software is just part of the picture. Implementation, customization and support are critical too. In my experience you are going to have to do some customizations in your implementation in use so make sure the product is something that can be customized not only by the vendor but from a 3rd party.

The product does seem to have the potential to fulfill all requirements of a small parts manufacturer.

The customer support starting at the implementation stage right through to after sales ongoing support is poor. The supplier attitude is "Wellm you bought it, so get on with it." There seem to be very few people in the organization who actually know how it works and how to correct bugs and issues. The reports package is full of flaws. We have spent a lot of money trying to improve the product ourselves.

Recommendations

Make sure you are prepared to support yourself in-house. If you don't have an in-house tech team don't buy it!

Our implementation and set up was managed very poorly, and we feel that we were cheated by the team responsible for our Implementation and set up. They clearly had ulterior motives in taking our money per hour above and beyond what we purchased in the original fee. The software company we purchased from has not called or reached out to us once since our investment.

Recommendations

Be very sure that you negotiate a great deal of set up and implementation into the purchase price.

This ERP software is very intuitive and very flexible relative to the previous software from Made2Manage that my organization ran for the past 24 years. The input of transactions is straightforward with minimal training, and searching for almost any data is substantially easier.

The only issue we've had any challenge with so far is with the conversion of our old Made2Manage data, which was an old FoxPro version into a pure SQL format. Some data came across easily, and some data didn't come across at all. We could have come up to speed running the new software much faster if we'd have been able to convert our M2M data in a more timely fashion.

Recommendations

We are a manufacturing organization and run in a job shop environment. We took a hard look at Syspro, SAP Business 1, Microsoft Dynamics GP / AX, JobBoss, IQMS, Infor Syteline, Global Shop, Epicor, E2, and ABAS. The fact that ECi M1 was a full SQL product now, had mobile capabilities built into it, and had a cost effective CRM module, bar coding capabilities, a payroll module inside the software, quality modules, job scheduling, and a substantial amount of screen customization that we could take care of ourselves made this package stand out from all the others.

M1 is more customizable than many other options.

Based on the increasing number of bugs and no new bug fixes, it seems that M1 is being phased out by ECi. The software is nearly unusable with Windows Vista and is mediocre at best on Windows 7. The scheduling module is terribly poor, and ECi has displayed zero effort in improving these issues. The tech support response time is horrid and there are very few well-trained tech support staff available (however a few are knowledgeable). Come on ECi! Fix this product which has great potential!

Recommendations

This software could be great, but it is currently too outdated, full of bugs and does not seem to have an active development team. The very simple functions do not work and make this software almost unusable for many employees in our organization. We are currently looking for new ERP software. I would highly recommend looking elsewhere.

IT support is timely and almost always available.

It doesn't account for scrap within a job, and scrap tracking overall is very difficult. The software seems to want to manage scrap with completed good parts together, and that does not work when trying to track to meet ISO requirements.

Recommendations

Be very thorough in making sure the details of how the software works line up with your way of manufacturing. This is supposed to be completely customizable, but one of the issues we had could not be customized without significant cost, as it would require a complete rewrite in the software.
