Fishbowl Manufacturing Software


 

Fishbowl is a business automation and inventory management platform for small to midsize companies. It integrates with QuickBooks accounting and offers inventory control, material requirements planning (MRP) and job shop floor control/manufacturing execution.

It is an inventory-centric system, with features for barcoding, asset management, raw materials management, cycle counting and customized reporting. The system also automates the quoting, ordering and purchasing processes. The work order system enables users to create and share work orders for a variety of tasks.

Fishbowl offers training and support resources through its training videos, online tutorials, in-house specialists and more. Fishbowl’s integration with QuickBooks allows users to integrate manufacturing, sales, and distribution processes with back office accounting. Additionally, it also integrates with third-party accounting, shipping, e-Commerce and merchant services.

Avoid, it's so bad, new bugs every release and support is unresponsive.

Pros

Easier to use than some of the competition. That's about it. Offers lots of integrations, but they only sorta work.

Cons

Customer support is very slow to respond to issues, we have had an issue for six months now without resolve. Seems like there is no testing on releases at all. This is so much of a headache that if you plan on using this people take into consideration that you'll need a part time employee dedicated to resolving issues.

Bad software and bad company

Just stay away from it and thank me later. We lost 20K USD over this decision. It just sounds good. If you need it integrat d with anything just walk away.

Pros

-It seemed cheap compared to what they promised.
- They tried to help, but the software was just not designed to support ecommerce.

Cons

- response rate to customer service issues or system issues is minimum 2-3 days to get a response. By that time your business is messed up.
- sales reps do and say anything to sell you but don't talk to you after so there is an interest in just getting their commission.
- software claims to be Magento compatible, but it is not.
- every update broke the system with my ltiple new bugs.
-every time we fixed a bug a new one came up.
- they want you to pay for the simplest of features to be customized. If you didn't identify all incompatibilities with the sales rep before hand, it will cost you double easily.
- we ended up just scrapping the software after 9-12 months of integration efforts with 2 inhouse personell.
- WE ended up getting a consultant that within two days concluded that the software is incompatible.

Cons

Light on accounting reports to support analysis of accounting transactions. A bit light on reports flexibility in some sections but.... other sections have fantastic reporting. A bit less fancy excel output would be helpful.

This software has a lot of potential, but it needs someone to polish it and provide better training and implementation.

Pros

It is a fairly straight forward program, once you figure it out. It is figuring out the more challenging real-life problems that will be an issue.

Cons

Don't expect any decent help from fishbowl. They will refer to you their Wiki's that provide only the most rudimentary guidance and no information as to solve the everyday challenges. Using their chat function takes forever, first to get someone and then explain the challenge and most often they aren;t helpful. Their next most popular phrase is a lack of training which they want you to pay for, however, their training is not effective and how they structure the training is not effective. Again everyday usual problems when first starting is very hard to get help on. Also some very basic should be available options are missing.

It guides you through each step. You can't skip to the next without completing the step you're in. It probably has many more functions than what we're currently using, but as we learn, we are adding to our knowledgebase and making our reporting and daily functions easier.

Cons

Would like to have a ship to address and customer PO # printed on the pick list. We have some vendors with multiple addresses and I have to hand write those things on the pick list as a reference.
On our packing list, our zip code is cut off to just 4 digits.
We use locations for Loans and Gifts and use a TO to move items. In the notes section, we put the details of whom it went to and the person requesting it. When we run a report, those details do not show up, so we have to click on each TO to see the details. This takes time when we are looking for one specific Loan or Gift and where an item went.

I used it to pull information for an audit, but I can see that this could help a growing business to manage incoming inventory and where that inventory is eventually used for a product ultimately sold.

Pros

I used a license from one of my manufacturing clients. FIshbowl made it easy to find information for transactions that were flagged in QuickBooks for my review. This application seemed to integrate very well and was fairly simple for a new user in myself.

Cons

Pulling some reports was a bit slow and exporting of data to Excel was not in a very useful format (it required some cleaning up for my purposes)

It is very easy to Navigate and provides several detailed reports that will be extremely useful company wide. It provides visibility and traceability. I love the dashboard feature so all users can have a quick visual reference of what is happening throughout the business. I'm sure more pros will surface once we go live with the software.

Cons

I can't pinpoint any exact cons yet as we have not gone live. We have some guesses as to where we might meet a couple bottlenecks, such as when we ship partial orders, and the lines are split on a sales order, it may make it look to busy and information may become complicated to interpret. We also aren't sure how it will work with our customer and Vendor blanket PO's to release new qty's added or depleted.

Competence of support. I don't think I've ever called in and been able to speak to someone right away (that would be nice) but I always get a call back within an hour. The support techs always fix the issues and always take the time to work through things carefully, regardless of time.

Cons

Frequent hang ups with Quickbooks connection forces us to restart FB server. Overall database slowness for MS Access reporting.

It's a new way of thinking about our inventory but it's been a huge benefit! There is an obvious learning curve with any new product but the value has far exceed the time to "learn" something new!

Search function is amazing! Really like Fishbowl for the most part. Ordering, inventory tracking, automatic updating, etc.

Cons

1) Can't look at a part and see how many times it was ordered easily. Have to go in and out of the purchase orders. Would like to look at a part, see how often it was ordered and from whom, how many were ordered and how much we paid in a simple list form. Right now I only see the PO/Vendor without any of the important details like quantity ordered and cost.
2) I also think the Revision for an item should follow the part. It does not. There is a revision field that shows up on the purchase order, but doesn't print anywhere AND is not the same field from the Part Detail screen. In a manufacturing environment the revision for any given part should follow the part around the database, including onto purchase orders so the vendor knows what to fabricate. Right now I have to manually enter the revision on the vendor screen. The revision from the Part Detail screen should automatically populate on the Vendor screen for said part so that when the item is ordered, it appears on the purchase order .
3) I find the documentation sometimes lacking detail.
4) I'd also like to be able to create custom reports myself and without turning back the hands of time and forcing Java to use an old revision (required for iReport). A report creation function in Fishbowl would be awesome! Even my archaic old Parts & Vendors software allowed me to do create custom reports.

The software is easy to use and was pretty easy to learn. It seems to integrate pretty well in to quickbooks although I would prefer it keep the item (part) numbers on the QB invoice rather than saying FB_Item.

Cons

I would really like to see an equipment rental feature included. I have asked for this on many occasions as it is a key part of our business. The other feature I would like to see is the implementation of QR codes. Our main supplier uses these and it would be great if we could just scan their qr codes. Last issue is in the reporting of historical stock values, it seems to me that I sometimes get different values when running the same report on different days.

It replaced a very old and unreliable product. By integrating with QuickBooks, we greatly expanded the candidate pool for our accounting department. We were able to grow our business with lower growth in staff.

Pros

The user interface allows new users to become proficient quickly. The ability to incorporate bar codes and product images is helpful. It is a great substitute for the Inventory module of QuickBooks if you need to do a lot of kitting and assemblies as well as calculating landed costs for imports.

Cons

Report writing/modifying is cumbersome. End user is captive to Fishbowl or 3rd party authors. There should be more flexibility akin to Quickbooks for users to add/subtract columns of data as well as filtering by multiple criteria. Most filters are all/everything or just one Customer, Vendor, Part Number, etc. We also had to have custom reports created for some very basic inventory management reports - FB's main purpose. More end user input should have been/should be sought
EDI implementation is possible, but through 3rd party providers and automating order processing is limited.

Stream lining our pick pack and ship process, keeping track of inventory.

Pros

Easy to use, it is always growing with our company. This software is always evolving. This is our main database. Customer Service has always been great.

Cons

We would love if we could make our own reports and labels with out using ireport. Unless you have knowledge of crystal reports, its not easy. The ability to change how our invoices look and add more information our pick reports from the sales order.

This software allows us to see our inventory by location. We will start working with forecasting and sales force this year

Pros

Ease of use. Getting to understand Plugins. We update system continually and appreciate how you are always adding and making it more user friendly

Cons

Reporting features could be better. We just loaded plugins for Sales and Sales force so hopefully this will be better soon

How quick it is to complete a sales order. Create a BOM, Mfg. Order.
Receiving purchase orders, creating purchase orders.

Cons

Some times it's very slow to process info. Not able to modify certain reports. Being able to run a report for zero turns by a Vendor instead of by location.

Our favorite part of the software is the reports that are generated. We also like the ability to create custom UOM and conversions.

Cons

Picking module is not as flexible as we would like. We wish we could change the UOM in the picking module.
