2020 Review

We use this everyday for cabinetry design, proposals, and presentations. It is very nice and pretty user friendly. I like that it is almost like a one stop shop program.

PROS

The features that we use the most is the ability to use the catalogs to our actual cabinet providers. We also draw and quote various times a day along with presenting. The ability to print of floor plans and elevations with ease is a great feature. It is a very easy program to learn and integrate.

CONS

Features that could be improved is being able to dimension elevations that could be in hidden view before printing. Also being able to make an elevation without a wall.

2020 Design has learning curve, but worth the journey

I have been using 2020 design for nearly 20 years, I love that I can create a photo realistic model and accurate parts list/price list for my clients. I try to incorporate architectural features that are unique to their space to help make it feel like it is theirs.

PROS

2020 Design is easy enough for a novice to start dragging and dropping cabinets to create a simple design and quote, but there are powerful features locked away that make it worth the time investment to get really familiar with the software

CONS

Some complain about the software crashes in 2020 Design, I have found this happens less often with newer versions of the software. By constructing your designs strategically, minimizing the rendering that happens behind the scenes and keeping an eye on the file size of imported models and materials, you can almost eliminate this problem.

Reasons for switching to 2020 Design Live

Software decisions are made by my employer. ProKitchen is a directly competing product, but SketchUp is a complimentary product that I still use. I will often create a model in SketchUp and then import it into 2020 to enhance my designs.

Needs Improvement

I have been using 2020 Design for more than 20 years and I know the program extremely well. I feel that it is a useful product, but I also feel that there is a lot of room for improvement. Since day 1 of using 2020 Design I have HATED the dimensions. They are sloppy and when moving dimensions to the placement that you want them on your design is time consuming since it is required to then move every extension line individually to make then look right. The multiline dimensioning also does not work correctly since the leader lines do not go in the direction that they are needed. I have spoke to the 2020 customer service about this in the past. It would be nice to be able to change the size of the architectural tick, arrow or dot for the dimensions also.

PROS

I like that 2020 Design Live has a design cloud. This allows the ability to pull other manufactures products into your design. This helps with giving to most realistic presentation.

CONS

2020 Design Live cloud does not have enough plumbing choices especially when it come to sinks and faucets. I find to using to Kohler catalogs is horrible because the only way to find what you are looking for is by collection name. I do not want to have to continually go to the Kohler website to find the product that I am wanting and then find it in 2020. The 2020 generic plumbing catalog has very little items that are useful. It would also be useful if the 2020 Decorative Items catalog needs to be expanded. I know that has gotten more items that are useful but that needs to continue to get more items added.

Not perfect but definitely a necessity when selling cabinets.

Overall, working in 2020 Design Live is great once you have a decent understanding of the limitations within the program.

PROS

I like the pricing aspect the most. It is also important to have cabinets and aspects that can be modified to show client nice, realistic renderings.

CONS

I do like when cabinets, countertops, or lighting are not able to be modified to make the design more realistic.

My favorite design tool

2020 Design Live allows me to get the creative juices flowing. I love being able to upload my own materials and really make it come to life!

PROS

I love the ease of use of 2020 Design Live. It is user friendly and I have been able to pick up when I didn't use 2020 for a couple of years as tho I used it yesterday!

CONS

I haven't found anything I dislike about the program!

An Over Priced Monopoly

PROS

I liked the pricing features for cabinet brands that are integrated with 2020.

CONS

Customer service had not been good. Have lost whole designs due to unknown errors and had to start all over. Originally this software was a one time purchase for thousands of dollars plus a yearly customer service fee. That was already a stretch because I never would use customer service due to extended hold times and inability to fix my issue. Then they switched to a subscription based model and my key fob was canceled that I had paid for. It's now cost prohibitive. It also crashes often and has many quirks.

Reason for choosing 2020 Design Live

I only ever used 2020 because the cabinet lines I sold at the time were built around it. 2020 has a monopoly on the market as the big major brands are integrated with them to price and order. You are then left with no choice but to use 2020.

Essential for cabinet sales projects!

As a cabinet designer since 2005 this is the only software i have used that allows me to do it all from design and project presentation to detailed quote generation for estimates I can easily pass right along to clients . I literally use the software 5-6 hours a day.

PROS

Full integration with cabinet suppliers. Full color catalogs allow for realistic presentation to clients. Ability to customize colors and textures makes it fun and clients appreciate the extra effort. Lighting features are amazing and life like. Tutorials make learning new tricks a breeze. I also love being able to log into the live account from anywhere.

CONS

Nothing. I do wish there was a quick version of the software i could install on my travel laptop that holds less memory so i could access in more places.

Reason for choosing 2020 Design Live

Familiarity. Ease of use. Thorough catalog options.

If you are in the Cabinet Industry... how can you not have 2020?

I can't imagine being in the Cabinet Industry, and not being set up on 2020. There are other products on the market, but I don't find anything to be as beneficial as 2020 Design is.

PROS

The renders and the accuracy of the drawings makes the product an invaluable tool in the retail side of the equation. When your customer looks at the drawings, and says, 'Wow'... it's all worth it.

CONS

Honestly, there isn't anything I don't like. There are some things that are quirks, but its just fussy fine tuning things.

Reason for choosing 2020 Design Live

Years of satisfaction with the product... I don't feel there is really any alternatives.

Great product if you actually use all the features its made for

Pricing and estimating almost exactly what is put into drawings. The SketchUp imports, cloud catalogs' are a great and time tracker are also great new features. I've been using this software since early 2000's and have been impressed with most of the improvements and added features over the years. Having a monthly payment plan for a license would be a nice option.

PROS

Much easier to use and streamlined from over the years

CONS

The rendering and lighting; the drawing layout tools to print; tile block etc. Too may repetitive clicks to get to the same thing.

Complicated, I know I’m not using all the features, but I will work on improving that .

PROS

Perspectives, elevations, floor plans. Way faster than hand drawing! Great time saver. Clients love the presentation, they can see what their kitchen will look like!

CONS

Complicated to get the most out of it! I’m sure it’s because I just upgraded and need a little time to adjust.

Reason for choosing 2020 Design Live

I’ve been using 2020 since 1990, boxes on the wall. I’ve had 4 licenses in my 2 design centers before semi-retiring. I now work out of my house I can get away from doing kitchens, I love the finish product! 2020 is a huge help!

My experience

I don't have very many positive things to say about 2020 Design Live. I do hear the same complaints from colleges. My drawings need to be detailed. There are times when I have more than 1 room on a plan. I never use the virtual 3d color rendering. I need the working drawings and camera perspectives in hidden lines and hidden lines elevations. I always have to manually add height dimensions for base cabinetry height and wall cabinetry height in elevations even thought I have them set already to show.

PROS

I like how there are more cataloges to choose from. If only the cloud configurator would work to:change dimensions, add accessories (i.e. a shower arm on a shower head) without having to piece things together.

CONS

Tedious, redundant, crashes. There are quite a few issues with this product. I always have to reset countertop thickness, no global for it. I always have to manually add or hide dimensions even though I have them set to what I want. The program crashes every other day, hopefully I've saved it prior to the surprise of it. I use it almost everyday and I often dread going through the time comsuming task of getting working drawings with correct dimensions that I can confidentally give to my installers. Why are the lighting fixtures and furniture on the decorative items/cloud seen as boxes/squares on the floor plan? I can't use that and don't. The appliances in the could, i..e. Sub Zero, Thermador, won't allow me to change anything, why?If I use a tub plumbing trim set (all on one) from Kohler bath, the spout, the showerhead, the valve cannot be adjusted in heights. Which makes it tedious to grab one thing at a time and then it gets precariously close to causing a crash. Sketch up really whacks it out but Sketch up has better visuals for lighting and bar stools etc and I can adjust the dimensions of those.Frankly, when I call for customer service, which has been a handful of times, they come onto my screen help me out but then all my categories of cabinetry has to be re-organized so I tend to not call.

2020 could be better

When I started in the remodeling business, it was the first design program I learned and was fairly intuitive and easy to use. Since then I have used Chief Architect and while you need to know your cabinetry lines pretty well to know what you can and can't do, putting together a design and finishes are super easy and fast. Lighting effects are easier to control and the renderings are considerably better.

PROS

I have used 2020 for several years, not because I want to but because it is what my employer provides for our CAD program. I used to be very comfortable using it and hesitated using other programs. Teh customer support is very good and gets used several times a year. They are always quick to find the problem and correct it.

CONS

Too many steps to change a color or texture. Leaves weird shapes sometimes when you add walls to an already existing plan. Lighting is difficult to adjust to get good printed color images. Decorative and light fixtures items offered are odd, old and antiquated. System crashes too often. I have yet to figure out how to do the panoramic 360 views in the most recent version of the program. Duplication of items is cumbersome.

It's the only design program my employer provides

Look for a Different Design Software

PROS

Ability to create orders directly from designs.

CONS

The most frustrating software I use for work. I unfortunately have to use this almost daily for designing cabinetry, and ordering. When I first started working for the company I currently do, they had me working off a version that is 6+ years old, and earlier this year we purchased the updated/live version, expecting the horrible, very obvious, bugs to be fixed, only to find out they have not been. While scrolling through lengthy lists of mods for cabinets, it will jump back to the top when you try to select something, it is extremely slow (I also run CAD programs that are twice as large, and they are way quicker than 2020, even in the 3D views), and finally, the most annoying issue is sometimes when you press the "undo" button, it will revert your whole design back to the back-up file (which does not back-up as often as you set it to as well) and there will be times when you hit the undo button to only find you have just lost over an hour's worth of work. Talk about frustrating. If you're looking for a design software, do yourself a favor, and look elsewhere.

Kitchen & Bath Design

Overall the experience is good, the system allows us to complete a major part of our daily design work with the ease of adding finishes that are not in the system. The system definitely is one of the better ones to work with out there.

PROS

Being able to show clients what a finished room will look like. Being able to give contractors floor plans and elevations with dimensions on them. More up to date appliances.

CONS

How often it tends to crash even when using it on a gaming computer that can handle the program. That sketch-up tends to make it run slower and causes crashes. You can not fully rotate items that show up on their side or upside down from sketch up so being able to turn them over would be helpful. More items need to be added to the decorative items tab, add more options for flooring and tile finishes, lighting fixtures, etc that are in sketch up that should be incorporated.

PROS

2020 Review

Overall I find the program easy to use, I have been using 2020 for 20 years so I have grown with the program.

PROS

I like the ability to easily switch from a floor plan to a perspective coloured rendering to communicate how the space will look. Over the years there have been great improvements with colour and accessories.

CONS

There seems to be glitches that you have to find a work around. For example dimensions will often disappear, you can turn them off and turn them back on and for the most part they come back. Depending on how many accessories are put into the design it can often shut down. Lighting also seems to be difficult to get right, it would be great if that just showed up automatically.

I love 2020 Design Live

I really like the software and enjoy the creativity level the software gives us in a way which can be displayed to our customers.

PROS

I like how intuitive the software is and the ability to freely design and layout things in a manner that my customer can understand what I'm designing.

CONS

The price would be my biggest complaint, but apart from that, I hate that if I have a large project I either have to create new drawings for other rooms on the same project. I would love to have room tabs at the bottom of the software that would allow us to design in a new space but in the same file. I also am irritated how a construction line is so easily selected. If I have a construction line near what I'm trying to grab, it always picks the line even when your mouse is hubberd over something else our trying to pick if the line if close.

Updating 2020 Versions

I do like the program and for the most part find it easy to design with. I find many changes when updating to new versions are not necessary. The biggest upset from 12 to 13 was the 3D rendering.

PROS

Basic features are huge! With each update, more and more basic features disappear. I shouldn't have to hunt and peck to find the basic features. Adding time to a design can be critical and iritating

CONS

The cloud! Although the items in the cloud are significant, I find myself using it less and less with each update. The search option is not friendly and making changes on attributes of cloud items is to much of a hassle now.

Reason for choosing 2020 Design Live

Mostly due to the high usage of 2020 Design Live in our demographic.

K&B Keene 20/20 review

It's been great, since I used to have to draw everything! LOL! Kidding aside, this program is great for the new designers coming into this career, but again, updating is crucial.

PROS

Live Order is wonderful! Saves time and accurate.

CONS

Ok. I've been designing for over 30 years. I would love to see 20/20 get up-to-date with their cloud products, specifically furniture, seating, mirrors, lights, etc... Also, the cloud is difficult to find your items quickly. It would be great for 20/20 to incorporate the brand names of countertops, so we don't have to create the colors when we are designing (specifically granite & quartz). Need more up-to-date materials that are used in kitchens and baths.

My experience with 20/20 Design Live has been positive so far. It offers a lot of things that I haven't even started to dig into. Everyday I learn something when I use it.

PROS

I am always blown away be how well it runs. So many of these types of programs go very slow lag freeze up. The Design Live actually for me works very well.

CONS

More affordable training. With sales slowing down there really isn't enough money to spend to learn how to actually use the program to it's full potential. You offer the classes in large towns but the cost to get there and then the cost of the training. It puts it out of reach for the people who could really benefit.

Still a fan after all of these years

The customers are very savvy and need to see detail. I am able to paint a true picture of what their space is going to be. I know longer have to rely on the customer having to use their imagination. 2020 Design Live also eliminate the imagination envisioning something in the plan that is NOT there. A great tool to manage expectations. 2020 Design Live brings to the eyes what will be built in the future and is easy to use.

PROS

I have used 2020 for many and it has grown with in and for my customers. The ease of use and to see the detail allows the buyers to see what they could never see before, now my designs sell themselves.

CONS

setting up and updating pricing is not user friendly or easy to understand. I'm not a computer person, I am a designer and getting the pricing set up still is a challenge.
