Top Notch Financial Aggregator
Excellent and responsive company. Very strong app and desktop platform .
PROSFormer Mint user who switched over to Buxfer about 20 months ago. Love it. Best personal financial app out there and trust me I spent a long time doing my homework on all the different options out there. It keeps me on top of all my accounts. Has saved me money more than once.
CONSAccount synching is not always working properly...Have to update a lot
Reasons for switching to Buxfer
Wanted a more through and robust financial app.

Best Personal Finance Software
I don't use all of the functions of this software (IOU's and whatnot) but it gives a "control enthusiast" like me a choice of whether or not to sync my accounts. I like manually entering my cash flow and transactions day-to-day so I can balance it with my spreadsheet and track my spending carefully.
PROSI can sync with all of my investments, including the values of my rental properties and primary residence. But I don't like syncing my bank and credit cards, so I have the choice to enter the details manually. I love that I can do that!
CONSThis is most certainly personal finance software and wouldn't be appropriate for any sort of business expense tracking, in my opinion. (I'm an accountant.) If this is your goal, there are probably other options.
Reason for choosing Buxfer
I like to be in control and enter transactions manually, yet have my investments sync up so I can keep an eye on them.
Reasons for switching to Buxfer
There is no Quicken online! I tried to make QuickBooks online work for my personal finance but it doesn't mesh and is too expensive. I hated Mint.

Avoid using this app
horrible
PROSThe only reason i continue to use the app is that Buxfer can sync transactions automatically from my bank (i am in Germany)
CONS- the interface is very inconvenient. obviously the people who make the app don't use it - There are bugs (e.g. recently the app created a new account automatically and started synchronising new transactions there. now I have to transfer transactions manually apparently) - the lack of support. when i started using the app i created tickets for bugs and suggestions for improvements. after 4 or 5 reports i got zero replies and stopped trying to solve these problems. Translated with [SENSITIVE CONTENT]/Translator (free version)
Reasons for switching to Buxfer

Fantastic software with slight areas for improvement
Overall Buxfer has been a complete game changer for me. I have used competing software for years, starting with Mint, which I quickly abandoned due to lack of a paid (ad free) option and the lack of full control over categories (you aren't able to create new top-level categories and you aren't able to delete existing default categories for some reason). I then have used Pocketsmith for years and years as it allowed great customization. Nothing comes close to buxfer's clean interface, with the full account lists and tag lists down a column on the left and simple, fast navigation, as well as features more akin to higher level professional accounting software such as the ability to enter a projected bill payment or a payment made that may not be reflected on your statement yet, allowing for quick forecasting of balances and overall financial standing.
PROSI love the flexibility of this software. It allows me to modify and create a seemingly infinite amount of tags so I can organize all aspects of my financial life in a manner that facilitates historical insight for me. E.g. if you have multiple properties, you can separate expenses related to each property instead of sticking to generic templates. Additionally, while there are options out there that offer this feature, none seem to make it as quick and easy to create categories (called Tags in Buxfer) or edit them, add, remove, etc. Buxfer also has a built in "refund" transaction type, indicative of buxfer's understanding of real world financial transactoins, instead of categorizing a refund generically as "income" as most other options do. Additionally, the financial forecasting is dead-simple when compared to others. A clean, simple, visual chart showing forecasted balances is all what is needed. Something so simple that only Buxfer seems to have grasped so well. They have an IOU feature which I understand to be very useful however I have not used it yet.
CONSWhile for the most part buxfer seems to have nailed transaction splits (where one purchase is split into multiple categories, e.g. at a hardware store you bought some tools for a project but also some light bulbs for your home and you want to track separately), there are a few bugs here and there to work through. Additionaly, when entering reminders, I would love for there to be a feature to remove reminders after the date for them has passed. Buxfer is good at transaction matching however it isn't perfect.
Reasons for switching to Buxfer
Too many limitations on all other software. Buxfer's founder seems to be the only one who actually gets it. Almost no limitations. Multiple currencies, support for bank sync for nearly every single banking platform out there, projected payments displayed in a super simple manner, unlimited customization of tags, sub-tags, sub-sub tags, it's really just so flexible when compared to anything else out there that I have used.

Great tool but needs improvements
Overall it is better than using an Excel spreadsheet but there is still a long way to go to be a good product.
PROSIt is great to be able to view all my financial assets in one place to keep track of my overall net worth.
CONSSome integrations to some of my financial tools are missing and although I have requested them they still haven't been added. The forecasting function is not fit for purpose with the way people get paid. Nobody gets paid on the 1st of every month. The budgeting function is also very confusing and difficult to setup and use.
Reason for choosing Buxfer
It was the most comprehensive software of all of them. Also most of them are too US centric and were missing a lot of my financial tools for integration.
Reasons for switching to Buxfer
Because I wanted direct integration into my financial products and to track my net worth more accurately.

Open Ended Forecasting Software
I plan to continue using this software.
PROSThe tool is fairly open ended. You can make it work however you want it to. Plus it allows your forecast individual account balances.
CONSSome of the ways it handles account sync can be funky.
Reasons for switching to Buxfer
Mint only allowed me to create budgets for the current month and I needed to be able to manage individual account balances months ahead.

My fave financial app for years.
I just wanted to know where my incomes go and my expenses, per week, per month, and per year. Now I have detailed info about how I manage my money. Buxfer solved it.
PROSI have worked with this app since 2017. I tested another 2 or 3 apps to manage my accounting and Buxfer was the best. The best part is that I am from Colombia and I can manage my accounts in Colombian Pesos as my accounts in dollars.
CONSNo bad details that I can remember. I have no details about the app currently.
Reason for choosing Buxfer
The previous app I was working with, moved from a Windows app to a Web App. It was terrible
Reasons for switching to Buxfer
I am from Colombia and I can manage my accounts in Colombian Pesos as my accounts in dollars. Also that I can have all my info via their website and also via their Android app.

New user of Buxfer
The firm providing my last accounts software went out of business during the pandemic. The software did continue to function for a time. However the software finally crashed and could not be recovered and backups would not load. Buxfer rated very highly on comparison websites and proved itself with its ease of setup and secure uploads from all my accounts saving months of wasted time and effort. I wished I'd switched years ago.
PROSEasy to set up and easy to import data. Can be set up to drill down for very detailed analysis. Easy to set up for multiple accounts. Simple to amend accounts, transactions and levels of detail after the initial setup
CONSNothing much. Most of the problems are of my making, having to go back to improve the levels of detailed info that can be available if set up correctly.

Happy Buxfer user for more than 10 years
Historical transaction analysis and reporting ; Budgetting and Forecasting activities ; graphical drilldown analysis ; overall significantly improving my productivity on financial matters.
PROSI'm using Buxfer for 10 years now and I'm very satisfied by the various functionalities and the reliability of the software.I really appreciate the graphical analysis as well as the speed of operation even over quite large historical periods.I also find the budgeting and forecasting menus very helpful and powerful.Overall the application is quite powerful and very simple to use. This is the financial application I have kept using for the longest time (>10 years) and I see no reason to change.
CONSThe only functionality I'm missing is the ability to analyze exchange rate evolution in a multi currency user profile. This seems to be kind of a stretch for the development team. Beyond that I'm very happy with this financial application even though a direct connection to bank accounts would further facilitate the load of data.

Buxfer is built around the user ... you
Overall I have had a decent experience. I am sophisticated in understanding my finances and I like the way Buxfer allows me to manage my finances the way I want to manage them rather than the way the app wants me to. Earlier in my adoption it was frustrating getting support. That has improved. They seem to be more responsive to issues.
PROSEasy to set up, easy to use, easy to input data and transactions and easy to get data needed to manage my personal finances.
CONSReconciliation is difficult and can be time consuming when balances don't match. This is probably the biggest area of improvement Buxfer could make. Sometimes I can spend as much as an hour trying to reconcile an account.
Reasons for switching to Buxfer
I moved from Apple Mac to Chromebook and needed an online solution that would be similar to my experience with Quicken.

PROSPowerful financial software, but very easy to use. Supports multiple account management. It has a well-designed interface, great budget planning tools. Money can be easily withdrawn from various accounts, and information about that is generated in all types of reports on your expenses and earnings. It is possible to generate various types of reports in which you will be able to make numerous predictions regarding planned financial transactions. It is available from anywhere and at any time.

I used to love Buxfer, it did all I wanted, was very easy to use, and I recommended it to friends and and family. I would change to another tracking app in a heartbeat if I could find a good replacement.
PROSI loved Buxfer when I started using it years ago, it did everything I wanted.

The best personal financial management / budgeting software I have found (and I have tried a few)
Very glad I found Buxfer - it is the best product I have found for personal financial management / budgeting (and I've tried quite a few). The company seems to have focused primarily on product development rather than marketing spend - so the product flies below the radar but it really is better than the others I have tested.
PROSVery good connectivity with external banking services (vast majority of my bank accounts, credit cards sync automatically). Great flexibility for setting custom spend categories / sub-categories and associated reporting.
CONSWould like to see more flexibility on the budgeting side - grouping spend categories into different groups based on whether they are weekly / monthly / annual expense types (rather than pro-rating everything into a monthly view)

Helpful personal finance system
I have used it for my personal and family finances for several years now and plan to continue.
PROSThe best thing about Buxfer is the straightforward visualization of my spending by tags I define. It syncs with most of my financial institutions and allows me to do a relatively quick monthly checkup on how I'm doing. I appreciate that I can generate backups, so I feel secure.
CONSFor some reason, despite multiple attempts by the support team, Buxfer keeps auto-tagging some of my expenses as transfers, so of course I'd like to see that fixed, but I can live with it. There are also some quirks with how it handles currency exchange rates, so anyone who regularly operates in multiple currencies will need to experiment to see whether that works for them.

Tried several tools and returned to Buxfer
When I first started to use Buxfer about 10 year ago it was the only tool I have found to allow convenient bulk transaction import. I have been choosing being about 3 tools at that time, and buxfer was also the only one to support flexible rules for transaction categorisation. After a while I switched my main bank and the new bank does not allow to download statements in a auto-readable format. At that time Buxfer did not support syncing transaction with that bank. I tried to use other similar software but after about a year returned back to Buxfer (and was happy to find that the sync support for my new bank has been added)
PROSFlexible budgeting, syncing and auto-sorting transactions, insightful reports
CONSSometimes I wish the support was a bit more helpful. But in 10 years I had to contact them only a few times so it's not a big issue for me.

Flexible bookkeeping
Buxfer automatically syncs with bank accounts, and categorizes expenses based on rules. It allows me to track, split and project expenses across multiple currencies with flexible budgets and easy historical reporting.

Loyalty earned
I’ve been issuing Butcher for years. Prior to this I managed my finances using spreadsheets because I simply could not find a solution that allowed me to get the information I needed. Buxfer didn’t have all the features I wanted at the time but it was better than everything else I kind find and it’s ease of use sold it to me. I don’t know what the features I wanted were, but I certainly don’t miss them! I don’t know how it compares to competing products because I’ve never had reason to look!
PROSIt is solid - I’ve rarely had any trouble with the software and the few problems I’ve had have been handled well by support. It’s bank integration and ability to automatically pull in transactions and recognise transfers between accounts is invaluable. The mechanism for hierarchical tagging, automatic tagging and visualising data by tags is excellent. I can see the state of my finances at a glance and easily dig in to anything irregular.
CONSI think the interface for managing existing automatic tagging rules could be improved.

Clarity at your fingertips
At a time when my finances are undergoing some radical influences (buying a new home, getting married, inconsistent self-employed income etc.) it has been useful to be able to easily separate what constitutes regular and ongoing income and expenses from exceptional short-term and one-off income and expenses. This has brought far greater clarity to my financial situation and helped create meaningful budgets I can monitor.
PROSMy primary focus is keeping a handle on cash flow and budgets. Buxfer software enables me to keep on top of these tasks with relative ease.
CONSLike any software, there is a learning curve, and finding the setup that works for you can take a little while. Inevitably some things are less intuitive than is ideal, but with a little perseverance, nothing has bothered me too much for too long.
