Excel is still the most reliable spreadsheet and vital business tool for every organization

Excel is a great tool for users who work on large amounts of data and can handle complex calculations with 100% accuracy. It allows you to create pivot tables, sort, retrieve and analyze data, perform macros in VBA, build charts, tables, and many more features in a breeze! As an Accountant by profession, Excel has always been my best buddy throughout my career progression up until now and it never ceases to amaze me about the powerful features that I’ve yet to discover and utilize for more productivity and efficiency in my work. My top favorite Excel features are the following: - Scalable formula and calculation functions (IF, SUMIF, VLOOKUP, INDEX-MATCH, etc.): Excel allows you to extend the formula up, down, across the spreadsheet. You just need to create the formula once in one cell and Excel will help you to populate the formula in the designated rows/columns in your report. - Excel shortcut keys: it dramatically increases my productivity by using these tricks. It makes you look like a Pro and believe me, anyone will get intimidated when they see you typing so fast without using any mouse! - Conditional formatting: it makes your data more sophisticated and visually appealing to the users of the information. - Pivot tables: works like a magic when reviewing hundreds of thousands or even millions of data in one spreadsheet. - Paste special: copy+paste from one source to your spreadsheet with options of maintaining the formatting, value, comments, or even formula.

PROS

- Able to organize voluminous data into orderly, logical spreadsheets and charts - Allows simple to complex formula and calculations quickly regardless of the amount of data - Microsoft Office and Google sheet integration

CONS

- Learning curve; it takes a lot of practice and training in order to advance your Excel skills. - Calculation errors; Excel will never know whether the data you inputted is correct or not. - Expensive cost of entry; Google sheets is free

Reason for choosing Microsoft Excel

Loyalty, better computational power, and more reliable

The best spreadsheet application in existence

Excel offers spreadsheet fans of any level a tremendous lot of enjoyment, but it has given us more than we can chew at this point in time. You are need to go through extensive training in order to use all of its capabilities. Excel is similar to my handback. I take it with me wherever I go. Nowadays, the solution to any question may be found in a spreadsheet. I've progressed from simple addition and subtraction formulae to developing Macros, executing queries with Power Query, Pivot tables, and much more in Excel. Excel is an essential tool in my job as an accountant and data analyst. Despite having used this for many years, there is still so much to learn, and I am always discovering new recipes on YouTube and forums. What you can accomplish with Excel is limitless.

PROS

Power query, Power Pivot, Pivot tables, and pivot charts have been my favorite tools in excel. Macros and the all new LAMBA functions are spicing up my everyday experience with excel. There are a lot of things to love about excel if you take some time to learn it. Array formulas have been scary in excel, but In excel 2021, they implemented spilled arrays which has made the fun more enjoyable. I just love excel.

CONS

There is limitation on the amount of data a spreadsheet can hold. Excel is limited to about a million rows. If you are not familiar with cube formulas or pivot tables, it will be difficult to go above this limitation.

Reason for choosing Microsoft Excel

Excel is fully available offline, every office, every computer, everyone uses excel, excel is everywhere. Resources to learn excel are easily and readily accessible at little to no cost.

Well, it's an option

A tolerant level of frustration, like accepting your parents or siblings because they're your only family, but they irritate you to no end. It's there and it's all you got because Google cloud apps are blocked by your law firm.

PROS

The pros are thin on this software. I'll list them by number. 1. The software is over 20 years old and has been refined and recreated numerous times over that period. 2. It makes creating lists very easy when copying and pasting information from tables on web forms. It intuitively pastes tables by column and row quite accurately 99% of the time and enables you to take one column as a list and paste it anywhere else. This utility reduces the tedium of quickly conveying information to co-workers considerably. 3. The ability to import data by comma or tab delimited text files is also exceedingly powerful in reducing time spent listing or reporting on specific items in a format that is not conducive to pasting into a table, or perhaps powershell script derived data outputted to a comma delimited text file. As a computer engineer, this takes hours and hours of time and compresses it into minutes. 4. The formulas, while available on Google or other spreadsheets, are also good pros and help with calculating anything you need to do in terms of math from other columns, in my case and in short, capacity and utilization percentages of storage devices on hand.

CONS

What I like least are the frustrating things, and while few, these really irk me and stand out as a problem, especially in creating reports for people using the formulas, math and functions that spreadsheets are best known for. Case in point: The ability to copy and paste just the function into another spreadsheet that is open. It simply does not work unless you tab out of the existing cell and this is because, annoyingly, separate files, completely separate Excel spreadsheets, all act as if they're part of the same file. If I have one spreadsheet xlsx file open and a separate one open where I'm copying and pasting pertinent data from one to the other, it acts as if I'm in the same spreadsheet and the behavior is inexplicably wonky and unusable. I just want to copy the formula plain text as is into the cell of another spreadsheet because I want to use that same math for data related to other irrelevant items. Google Sheets does not do this at all. Maybe this was something Accountants wanted for some crazy reason that I'll never encounter as an engineer. But this is obnoxious and makes me scream at the computer often. The other con is that I do not like the non-intuitive UI and clunky way to simply save files. It pushes One Drive, and pushes it hard like non stop telemarketing calls. Also, I just prefer the old way to save files. Call me old fashioned but it was simple. I don't need the whole screen to change when cling the file tab.

We Use Excel to Store Customer Emails

Like I mentioned - the sales team gathers emails of potential customers when we are at Shows, and when we return from the shows, we will take the emails and enter them into an Excel spreadsheet. It keeps things orderly.

PROS

Our sales team gathers emails of potential customers when we are at Shows, when we return from the shows, we typically will take the emails and enter them into an Excel spreadsheet. It keeps things clean, and it’s easy to use. Reliable.

CONS

We don’t have many issues with excel. It’s pretty straightforward both how it is used and how we need to use it. Works well.

Reason for choosing Microsoft Excel

My sales manager knew and easily worked with excel, so we went that direction. We continue to use it after each show and it’s pretty user friendly. I see no need to change now. It’s also simple which helps.

The only thing that I like least is when a formula is off, the data will not be correct. Thankfully, it is an easy fix, but this may be challenging to a beginner who isn't familiar with the inner workings of Excel.

Spreadsheet Data Management & Analytics

It is great for simple data and quick data filtering. It can quickly fix issues if you are using it for inventory editing and can come in handy for stand alone projects. If you add a lot of different equations in it or use it for larger data, it can become a pain using it. Since it is program on your computer and not cloud based, it can out perform tasks that competitors would struggle with that are cloud based.

PROS

This software is a company standard use for a lot of other programs. It can filter data, create .csv files for upload and download of data, and handles equations to help with data analytics. There are a lot of guides on this program online if you are struggling with a problem and there are plugins that you can use to help make your job faster. Many companies have this as a standard so sending files to others is usually not a problem.

CONS

It is not meant to be used as a database for large data. It can lag out after you get to 60K lines of data. The biggest issue I have with this program is that it likes to convert large number text to scientific notation and you have to constantly do workarounds to prevent it from happening. It has some minor glitches if you have too many different files open at the same time. It is not the greatest with group collaboration because the files are meant to be used as one user at a time. You have to also manually save your files from time to time as you are working. Although you can often times get your file back if it wasn't saved and the program shuts off, it still is a practice you have to get into a habit of doing.

Reason for choosing Microsoft Excel

Excel has a longer standing in managing data through sheets. Often times, I would switch between Google Sheets for other projects that require group collaboration. The fact that it is not cloud based and some other program integrations require it makes it difficult to fully get rid of.

Excel is difficult to use but offers so many features

Excel has so much to offer. I just wish that it would help it's users more with guidance. The help bar gives no guidance to its features and any tutorial is basic as ever. I shouldn't have to pay for courses outside of the company to figure it out. Microsoft should be providing the information needed to succeed with their products.

PROS

I like Excel because of all the features it does contain (even if I don't understand how to work most of them). But if you do understand how to work it, you can get amazing things done on Excel. You can track finances better than anywhere else. It's incredible some of the spreadsheets I've seen accomplished. You can actually create self-correcting puzzles such as Sudoku and Word Search Puzzles. I've even saw articles where artists created outstanding artwork with Excel but once again even when it comes to the art, it's all advanced mathematical formulas and equations, etc. I appreciate how Excel shows the formula that you should be using when you either type it in or click on it. It helps for memory and understanding new formulas. But when using several formulas together, it's not very helpful.

CONS

It would take me a lifetime to fully understand how to work everything in Excel. I took two classes on Excel-- Excel Skills for Business Beginner and Excel Skills for Business Intermediate. They were HARD. Advanced was way too hard for me to even attempt. But when taking the classes I realized that there is so much to unpack with Excel. It is extremely Mathematical which I never realized before that. If you're not great with Math, you may struggle with Excel because it's all about understanding and creating formulas. The intermediate and advanced formulas were way to hard for me.

Reasons for switching to Microsoft Excel

I made the switch because I was already paying for Microsoft Office so it came with Excel. I expected it to be like Google Docs, but it was nothing like it. Google Docs in many ways I prefer because it's user-friendly. Even if you're not a math genius, you can get through it. With Excel, to do anything besides making basic spreadsheets, you need to really know what you're doing.

the god of spreadsheeds softwares

I use Excel since the 90's. And as an engineer it is a vital tool for me, so much that I no longer only use it for my work, but I have created spreadsheets even to keep track of what is in my cupboard. Honestly, for me it is already natural to use Excel for any calculation of my daily life.

PROS

I think I know Microsoft excel since I had my first computer in the 90's and since then it has been my favorite spreadsheet program. It has definitely evolved and improved over the years and now it has millions of functions that it did not have in the 90's and that make Excel the god of spreadsheets. Obviously you can do mathematical calculations associating cells, but it goes much further. You can generate charts of different formats from data from the spreadsheet, do complex calculations and format the sheet to improve its appearance, associate tables to documents or external links and print spreadsheets directly from Excel. It can be a bit overwhelming the first time you face it, but once familiar with the software, it becomes very easy and intuitive. In addition, the office help platform is great and has everything you need to take advantage of all the Excel functionalities to create maybe just a calendar to the organized calculation of your expenses and your monthly budget and the best thing is that you don't have to create the spreadsheet from scratch, because you can look for predesigned formats created by Office to enter up your monthly expenses, the programming of your daily activities, a record of attendances, a list of guests and more ...

CONS

I think it is still very difficult to format a spreadsheet to go from the computer to the paper. I would like them to improve the printing process, since many times I have had to print a document over and over again and modify the sizes of the cells in a trial and error process to achieve a finished product that is pleasant once printed.

A business must have!

I have used Excel for business, home and small home business. I started using Excel many years ago with no computer experience and taught myself mostly. I started using it to keep track of data and parts usage in automotive productions. I started simply and grew from there. Next I started using it to create and track part testing schedules. I was easily able to create the test parameters, details of these tests, add schematic and print information, dates, machine information, production lines, schedules, reports and file all completed tests and results as well as share these with engineers and customers. The ability to attach photos to these reports is a huge bonus. My next feature I learned with Pivot Tables and this opened a whole new arena of possibilities. I gathered all production line data and entered it into line items such as Production line, products coming off this line, counts, scrap, maintenance issues, costs, personnel and down time. This was them accessible in a pivot table I could manipulate to see where the cost where coming from, downtime issue and ways to cut costs and streamline production and maintenance. By simply clicking on which data I wanted to see, in an instant the data changed. From here I could transfer this data into charts for management to use at a glance.

PROS

Easily store any and all data, information, photos, contacts... the use is endless. I believe I had only scratched the surface in Excel. The more I used it and explored its capabilities the more excited I got about how I could use it. It uses as it applies to large and small businesses is never ending. You can use it for home business and personal storage of information as well. My Grand kids even started to use it at age 5, obviously not for business but they taught themselves how to use it, PowerPoint and Word.

CONS

I think the only issue I ever had was with updates. For personal use it is pricey when you need to update to the newest version, I suppose in the scheme of things and for its many uses its not that expensive though. Again for personal use when working or sharing with others the various versions can create some issues but they have gotten better about making sure each updated version can transfer data from the older versions Its only an problem when the person using the older version needs data thats on the newer version. As far as learning in Excel, there are so many books, tutorials and videos you can usually find what you need but there is also so many features in Excel I was only frustrated by wanting to know it all now rather than later.

The best thing since sliced bread

PROS

I remember once, many years ago I had a teacher saying that Excel was originally created to augment and support another spreadsheet program. However by the time they finished developing the original version it far out-shined the program it was meant to support. So much so that the other software was dropped entirely in favor of Excel. I don't know how factual this recounting is, but it wouldn't surprise me if it is true. Excel rocks. I use it all the time for my business. Yes I also have Quick Books and other accounting software. But nothing beats a good ol spreadsheet. I can put all of my numbers in and edit them with an endless amount of formulas. It is truly mind-boggling the depth of the program too. Sure it can auto-sum columns and sort data by the 3rd letter of someone's name, but it can do much much much more. I once created a program inside of excel to aid in the scanning of bar codes. We had a bar code scanner that would simply dump all scanned data into a single column in excel. Using the built in scripting I created a button that (after dumping the data in) would auto sort the data into it's necessary column and prep the sheet for printing and signatures. Not only that but I set it so that at the push of a button the end user could create the next week, month, or even yearly document at the press of a button. Also, using O365 you can have multiple people editing the same document simultaneously. This is Huge! No more editing copies of copies.

CONS

I really can't think of any. I suppose how fun it is. I've wasted many many hours creating complex spreadsheets for my simple budget merely because I wanted too.

Spreadsheets with Power

Excel has been my go to for financial statement preparation (as an accountant). I have used it for the accumulation of tax data and preparation of tax forms. At one point, I programmed Excel spreadsheets to do many of its own functions for these very forms. Today, I continue to use Excel as a way to track data for the church I serve. I use it for time tracking, information gathering and formatting, and to track the data I maintain of people and thing in the church.

PROS

I would consider myself to be a professional Excel user. I have been using Excel for more than 20 years and I cannot see using any other type of spreadsheet software. I started with Lotus (a predecessor of Excel) and have not looked back when Excel became the software to use. I am also one of those people who takes to using new technology relatively quickly. Excel provides so much in the way of capability that there are some aspects of Excel that I am not familiar with, even though I am no longer a daily user. The help function (the question mark in a box) is very user friendly and there are also many help topics that reside within the software. If you are asking a really tough or programming question, there are also online forums for those who would be considered power users. For those who are simply in need of a place to gather information and make some simple calculations, I also would not look any further than Excel. With the Microsoft 365 subscription, you get all of the most recent updates and functionality without the high price of buying the software license each time the software gets an upgrade.

CONS

The only con would be if you purchase the full license. When you subscribe through Office 365, you get all the latest updates without having to purchase a new license each time. If you are not familiar with spreadsheets, Excel's functions and tool bars can be a bit daunting to look at. But, if you take some time and familiarize yourself with them, they are quite logical in their layout and functions. You can also customize the toolbar to include the functions you need the most. It just takes a little time to do so.

Great for business & list keeping

My overall experience with Excel is that it is vital for someone running a small business and that it's reliability has been a major factor in me continuing to use it.

PROS

I have been using excel for my personal business to keep track of payments, addresses, participants, buyers, and much more. I think that it is good that excel has kept its basic format over the years. I learned how to use this software when I was in high school and I did not struggle because it is rather intuitive. As the internet has become even more popular, if I ever want to do something fancy on excel, all I have to do is google and get the directions. I think that this kind of ease of use for a small business person is incredible important, it is all I have used to keep track of these important financial things and it has worked out quite well for me.I also like that the software can be combined with word to generate mailings, lists, and other important things at work. The ease between the different software allowed me to teach much older generations. I think that keeping the formatting of excel was important because I have seen so many other software companies drastically change things and then suddenly no one knows how to use it anymore and that just becomes a huge issue and also that is one big way to lose customers! I think it is great software. I really need it for my business and for keeping track of everything I would forget.

CONS

I think that at times when I have tried to do the little math tricks using excel I've had some issues with things suddenly freezing or deleting and had to start all over again. I think that there have been some minor bugs in the hassle that have wasted some of my time or had me lose some info, but it is still more reliable than other software I have tried, and I still recommend it.

Still the best option we have

Overall, the cons that it provide do not outmatch the great benefits Excel can give. I don't see any other software going beyond what Excel can do, especially since it has established itself for decades now. I disagree with the fact that most Microsoft software are subscription based now, but I guess it just goes with the trend and the times. I'll be using Excel daily from today until the foreseeable future.

PROS

Excel has become a daily part of my life to help manage all the things that need to be accomplished both for short term and long term. As an online freelancer, I need a lot of excel sheets to track my work schedule, tasks, accounting, investments, upcoming events, just to name a few. The design is easy and intuitive. It hasn't changed a lot since its earlier versions, but I guess it comes down to the old adage: "Don't Fix What Isn't Broken". Most of its features are those available with other Microsoft applications such as Word and POwerpoint, making the ease into the software much easier.

CONS

Excel is an easy tool to learn but it is hard to master. While it can be used as a simple log, learning more about it can actually yield to more time saved as Excel can be programmed to do computations for you. That said, there are so many ways to use Excel that it can at times overload me with information, to the point that event the simplest of tasks become a little more complicated due to symbols and shortcuts, not being as clear as they should be. Excel also suffers from a similar problem that other Microsoft applications have in that they Auto Format to the point that it becomes irritating. You could waste some of your time trying to correct figures in your Excel sheet if it suddenly starts to believe that your info is a date and acts on its own will.

Absolute industry standard for spreadsheets

It's difficult to imagine financial analysis without numbers on spreadsheets and excel, without doubt is the gold standard for all things spreadsheet. Automation of tasks in excel using natural language based macros has helped us save massive number of manual hours and at the same time facilitated fresh revenue streams through creation of utility add-ins. Overall, despite its list of negatives, it's usability and application is undeniable - and unsurprisingly it is the industry standard for spreadsheets.

PROS

Microsoft Excel is so deeply ingrained in the world of financial research that at times while considering any other application, it's integration with excel becomes a key determinant of its usability. Excel can be a great fit for almost every type of user - individuals or corporates (whether big and small). It is loaded with features which are impressively intuitive such as pivot tables and data tables and there is no ceiling to the tips/ tricks that can be applied to perform a task more efficiently. The extent of automation possible with the use of VBA/ Python based macros and additionally now with RPA (Robotic process automation) is unbelievable and revolutionary.

CONS

Personally feel that its greatest advantage (being fully loaded) is probably it's biggest folly - The learning curve on excel can be quite steep. It can take a user a while to become an efficient formula builder and even then they can seem quite tedious, messy, and complicated. The program can be buggy at times while handling huge quantities of data and an unexpected crash (if the autosave feature isn't on) can lead to moments of madness with hours of work being lost in a a flash. Also, the Macbook version isn't anywhere near as user friendly as the one on windows and hence one may lose a lot of functionality on the spreadsheets while sharing them cross platforms.

Regular user of Excel 2019 Pro... I like it!

For the money, it is an overall excellent performer that has never gotten stuck....bug free. It can handle large lists of numbers quite well (up to 1,048,576 rows or 16,384 columns). Obviously, if you need to do data exploration like a Data Scientist on tens of millions of rows then you'd want to look at a different tool. The main target audience is general business. I've used Excel on the job since the mid 1980's.

PROS

Sometimes you might need to record your business travel related expenses and time, to get reimbursed, but you don't have expensive software to track it online. Other times, you might want a quick chart, to explain a trend in some transaction data being measured. Yet other times, you might want to collaborate, to allow other users to update a spreadsheet in real-time without waiting for one user to finish, unlock, then notify the rest. Power users might want to use it's equation solver, such as for a curve fit to some data points. I had written VBA macros behind the scenes, to extract some data to a separate new page, perform calculations, and save a result on a network drive automatically. Excel 2019 is a rock solid performer that does not get stuck. For communicating out your typical company financial reports, Excel is the general industry standard.

CONS

I would like to see more flexibility to specify different types of curved line charts, bordering on the scientific. At times, making changes is less intuitive, such as when plotting multiple lines on the same chart with a moving average line, and with the kind of intervals and tick mark labels you want. If it just did a little more then I wouldn't need to export the data to something else (like Python) to do it the hard way.

Reason for choosing Microsoft Excel

While there certainly are newcomers to the market (OpenOffice and LibreOffice) that are open-source free, the file formats are not identical..making sharing with other businesses problematic...and they are not as full featured. In the education and gov't markets, some folks have switched over to save money but they typically don't rely upon sharing their docs with outside companies so much and their needs are simpler. Since I have worked with many different clients and need to remain 'compatible', I stuck with the industry standard...which is Excel.

Reasons for switching to Microsoft Excel

When Microsoft began bundling their Word processor and Excel spreadsheet products with their operating system, and their data could be somewhat shared (like pasting a spreadsheet into your word processing document), and since MS got most of its revenue from their OS anyway, they could lower their price, that was a game changer...other competing products couldn't keep up. But that was decades ago. Fast forward to the present time, for general purpose business-related accounting spreadsheets or simple charts, it can produce results quickly and their charts can be resized and gathered on a summary spreadsheet. Many times business clients have wanted database extracts to be saved to .csv files that their users can further slice/sort/edit as they wish. Businesses have long since standardized on MS Excel.

Powerful tool in capable hands

I use Excel daily for my job. Over the last year as I have learned things like vlookup, pivot tables, and how to set up various formulas, it has gone from a spreadsheet program to a powerful tool.

PROS

For basic tasks this product is intuitive and very easy to use. Easy to learn formulas and simple mathematical equations can turn this basic product into a very powerful tool. You can quickly and easily find the sum or difference between two values. You can find duplicates values in a column or row. You can color code cells, columns, or rows. Excel includes most of the basic text formatting features that Word contains as well. Learning vlookup has changed my life. Learning Pivot Tables has also been a great help.

CONS

There can be a learning curve for some of the more advanced features, such as Pivot Tables or VLookup; having someone around who can help you get started can be very helpful. You have to consider the cost when compared to similar, free products such as Google Sheets. Google Sheets does is not quite as robust but it is free and contains most of the basic functionality as Excel.

Reason for choosing Microsoft Excel

Excel has more robust features.
