Just an employee for this one...
That it's easy to clock in and out. I don't have to remember a lot of steps.
CONSAs an employee user, I don't normally experience any interactions other than my paycheck being deposited and my time kept between paychecks.

Great product for the price
Heartland was a nice group to work with when we were looking for a cheaper alternative for a HRIS company, we were referred by our insurance brokerage team and nothing but good things to say regarding the people who worked with Heartland.
PROSWhat I liked most about Heartland Payroll was their push to work on the mobile app and making sure the employee has access to many of the features that Heartland payroll had to offer.
CONSThere are two different websites you needed access to in order to tackle the daily operations for Heartland while I was using it: One for Payroll and HR, and one for Onboarding and Time & Attendance. WHile that was becoming together on the mobile app towards the latter portion of our time with Heartland, there was no strides to do that for the websites.
Reasons for switching to Heartland Payroll
The cost for Paycor was too high for us at the time since we were a smaller company, but didn't have the budget to sustain the paycor costs.

Please read - I wish I had know
Please do not use Heartland. It is difficult enough being a small business owner, this company could bankrupt you if you cannot weather the storm. It is very sad that a a company like this is still in business. They are suppose to provide professional services and according to my accountant and the TWC they are not held liable for their gross incompetence
PROSThe sales people. They were good, they personally visited me and the would still answer my call even after they sold me on their product.
CONSWe had a terrible experience. After the sales process was done, and we were promised the World, everything was downhill. We have had to pay over $12k in taxes and insurance audits due to incorrect reports. We have spent over 200 man hours and counting to fix their errors. Our employees never received correct W2s. We have 30 employees and Heartland has cost our company in excess of $20,000 and were with them for less than 1 year.
Reasons for switching to Heartland Payroll
They promised me a personal HR representative would visit our office to make sure we were in compliance with everything. They promised that their ideal company they served was our size and that we would be a perfect match. They reduced our weekly payroll costs by $50They promised us a personal representative that would be available any time day or night with a direct line to them. We were tired of ADP and UPS loosing our paychecks every other week. Then we spent half a day on the phone tracking it down. We could never get any from ADP on the phone without waiting.

Heartland Payroll
Overall our experience has been good, it's a useful program that generally does well at what we need it to do.
PROSIt's great for keeping track of employee hours and managing payments, and the interfaces are extremely user friendly for the most part. Their customer service is very good as well.
CONSThe website occasionally has issues loading, I don't know if it's due to high traffic or some other issue, but it can sometimes be frustrating when the page is unavailable.

Constant Tax Issues with months of waiting time
Horrible. Would not recommend to anyone. All tax issues I would attempt to handle on my own or be the middle man between heartland and the state to try and resolve. Better off doing it yourself.
PROSThe website worked alright for inputting hours. However frequently hours would be placed in the wrong job code.
CONSConstant tax issues. Every quarter I would got noticed from the state saying my taxes were paid wrong. They don't check your amounts due for taxes. Surprise tax bills for several thousands frequently. Normally a 2 month response time for tax issues which make the following period also incorrect.
Reason for choosing Heartland Payroll
Poor decision. Heartland told me they would fix my tax filing issues which was completely false.
Reasons for switching to Heartland Payroll
Toast also was a failure at paying taxes correctly.

Perfect if you're looking to cut checks and nothing more.
My overall experience wasn't great because once I switched to another payroll service, I found out that there was a lot of things that is supposed to be done by your payroll provider on behalf of your business and failure to do these things could result in penalties and fines for your business. I was not aware of any of this while I was a customer of Heartland payroll and it was not being done for me.
PROSWhat I liked most about this software was the inexpensive price.
CONSWhat I liked least about Heartland Payroll was that nothing was electronic. I had to call in payroll over the phone each time.
Reason for choosing Heartland Payroll
The inexpensive cost of Heartland is what made me choose them.

It Was Ok
Overall we decided to end our servivce with Heartland when our contract was up. We were able to find several other payroll providers who charged less with many more features and benefits.
PROSHeartland Payroll worked and did what it was intended to do. I was able to process payroll and pay employees on time.
CONSMy experience with customer service was not great. They were difficult to contact, and I always had to leave a message and hope they would call me back. Most of the time I would have to reach out several times to get something resolved. Additionally, as an admin, I had very little access to the system, and there were very few things that I could change or update without contacting customer service.

DON'T USE THIS COMPANY
Not good at all. Customer Service sucks. I ask for help on an issue at the beginning of December and it is now the middle of January and the only emails the I got concerning my issue was emails the pass the buck to someone else.
PROSNothing. I would not recommend this product to anyone.
CONSEverything this is hard to get through. And good luck getting anyone to help.
Reasons for switching to Heartland Payroll
Was recommended. I am going back to ADP asap

It's ok, from a member standpoint
Using heartland just as a user was not the best experience. It was nice for w2 purposes, and being able to clock in/clock out on a daily shift at the restaurant.
CONSViewing/printing paychecks each week was such a challenge. Most times I would almost get kicked out because my password didn't always register. It was not very organized.

Horrible company
These are the most incompetent company I have ever dealt with. We were only with the company for the 4th quarter of 2019, these were the problems we had. State payroll taxes were sent in but sent to a completely different account than ours which resulted in penalties. Our unemployment reports or payment was never sent in which resulted in penalties. When we had paper checks that needed to be sent to our office the shipping labels were printed but the package never sent out (this happened 3 times) which resulted in me writing in house checks and still being charged by Heartland for shipping and the printing of the checks. 6 months later I am still dealing with their incompetence.
PROSI did not like anything about this software
CONSThe software wasn't the problem its the company employees
Reasons for switching to Heartland Payroll
Biggest mistake I ever made. I went back to Paychex and will never change again.

Worth the $$
I love that I don't have to figure the payroll taxes for our small company, so I happily pay Heartland to handle this for us. They are really nice setting up my account, and every time I have an issue. Since our team only gets paid once a month, it's long enough between logins that sometimes I forget how to do something and mess it up. Everyone on staff that has helped me is always happy to fix anything I mess up.
CONSThere seems to be a few glitches in the system with saving payroll changes. The good news is that customer service gave me a few tips on how I can see if our changes saved, and also they are prompt to help me fix any issues.

Great Company
Direct deposit is great. I'm always able to cut an additional check if needed and my customer service rep is so helpful.
PROSGreat customer service, tons of additional options, always pays taxes on time
CONSI wish they would have made a way for me to import my construction software that my crew clocks in and out of so I did have to do it in 3 separate software programs.
Reason for choosing Heartland Payroll
Had used it before with other companies i personally owned.
