### About Slack

Slack is a cloud-based project collaboration and team interaction tool designed to facilitate communication across organizations. The solution caters to various industries, including media, research, technology, education, financial services, retail, transport, and logistics.

Slack provides public channels for members across organizations to start conversations. Private channels enable interaction within smaller teams, and direct channels help send messages directly to colleagues.

Slack incorporates feeds from social media into the application and blends them with ongoing conversations in various channels. Files such as PDFs, images, documents, and spreadsheets can be shared via drag and drop.

Slack archives messages, notifications, files (as well as the contents of files) and projects, all of which can be searched for later. Slack allows users to customize their notifications and reduce their scope. All changes are reflected in the native applications available for iOS and Android.

## Slack Pros and Cons

We analyzed 24,151 verified reviews for Slack to find out what actual users really think.

Select to learn more

Streamlined Project Collaboration

Slack supports collaboration with channels for projects, real-time updates, file sharing, and integrations with tools like Jira and Confluence. Teams can coordinate tasks, share resources, and communicate across departments or organizations, enhancing productivity and transparency.

Centralized Team Messaging Tools

Slack organizes team conversations into channels, threads, and direct messages, making it easy to share ideas, files, and updates. Integrations with other apps and features like pinning, tagging, and search help teams communicate efficiently and keep discussions focused.

Intuitive Interface And Setup

Slack's user-friendly design makes onboarding and daily use straightforward for individuals and teams. Navigation is simple, setup is quick, and features like guest access, huddles, and integrations are easy to manage, even for those new to collaboration platforms.

Notification Overload And Delays

Slack notifications can quickly become overwhelming, especially in large teams or active channels. Users often struggle with delayed alerts, missed messages, and limited customization options, making it hard to stay focused and keep track of important updates.

Limited Free Plan And High Cost

Slack's free version restricts message history, storage, and some features, which can be frustrating for small teams. Upgrading to paid plans is often necessary but can be expensive, especially for organizations needing advanced functionality or larger user counts.

Message History And Organization Issues

Finding older messages can be difficult, especially on the free plan with limited history. Important conversations may get buried in busy channels, and managing direct messages or clearing chats is cumbersome. Some users report delays and occasional app glitches.

Great platform for projects managment

Overall, I enjoyed its ease of use. The price was fair, and it is an ideal product for office interaction on projects and committees. I hope they can bring "read receipts" into the equation.....that would make it a 5 star platform.

Pros:

It is easy to set up, easy to add different chats and subgroups, a great platform for team interaction and project management.

Cons:

My last use of slack was on a project ending in May 2025. The hardest thing was not having read receipts. Not knowing which one of my team members read my messages or viewed my videos was difficult. I would have appreciated more info on what Slack members in my project group were doing....typing out responses, reading responses, ignoring messages...etc

Powerful communication and work management tool

4

After making it through the initial learning period, I have been happy using Slack. It helps me manage communication topics, stay on top of my work, and go back through chat histories to find information and files I need.

Ratings Breakdown

3

Ease of use

5

Functionality

Pros:

Slack is a powerful tool for both work management and communication. The supported integrations elevates visibility of tasks from different connected applications. The splitting of Direct Messages and Channels is helpful for ensuring communication reaches its target audience.

Cons:

Slack has a steep learning curve compared to other platforms (less intuitive in my opinion). Based on if conversations were continued within individual threads or within the main body of a message, I could inadvertently miss replies. Also it seems that my notifications for in-thread replies are inconsistent between my computer and phone's application. I'm used to this now and just make sure to constantly monitor the Activity page.

Reasons for switching to Slack

I went to a new company that uses Slack instead of Teams.

Pros:

Slack makes it easy to communicate with colleagues in a remote work setting with the ability to create group chats, different channels, and share files.

Depending on the version you pay for, Slack does run out of storage and will delete old messages. However, it notifies you first. I also find I sometimes have trouble with the phone app.

Great for Collaboration, But Can Be Overwhelming

4

Using Slack has been a mostly positive experience for team communication. It’s great for real-time collaboration, organizing conversations, and integrating with other tools. However, managing constant notifications can be overwhelming at times, and finding older messages in a busy channel can be tricky. While it improves team connectivity, the volume of communication can become distracting, making it essential to manage notifications effectively for a smoother experience.

Functionality

Pros:

Slack has seamless team communication with organized channels, direct messaging, and file sharing. Its integration with numerous apps like Google Drive, Jira, and Zoom streamlines workflows. The search functionality is robust, making it easy to find past conversations. Slack's customization options, including notification controls and custom emojis, enhance user experience. It's a collaborative hub, improving team productivity and communication, especially in remote or hybrid environments.

Cons:

Slack is sometimes overwhelming with constant notifications, especially in large teams or active channels. The sheer volume of messages may lead to important information getting lost. Its free plan has limited message history and integrations. While it’s great for real-time chat, Slack isn’t ideal for long-form discussions or detailed project management. Additionally, heavy reliance on it for all communications can contribute to "tool fatigue" for some users.

Reasons for switching to Slack

Teams get stuck frequently and was not reliable. Had lots of issues using teams especially calls.

I absolutely love slack, for day to day collaboration there’s nothing that comes close. From sending small and large files and general chat between teams and colleagues, its ease of use, it has everything you would need to keep your team flowing as best it can possibly be. Its pricing structure is pretty straight forward and is excellent value for money if you want to get things done properly. If there is any bugs or issues the customer support team gets straight into it and give you notifications along the way.

Cons:

I personally think they need to work on huddles and screen sharing as the competition has nailed this more (zoom/teams)

Reasons for switching to Slack

For the features mainly as it has lots more third party integrations.
