Cerner Millennium: Streamlining Healthcare Operations and Improving Patient Care

I had the chance to observe and engage with Cerner Millennium while I was interning at the university's pharmaceutical product development and research department. The program was essential in fostering effective interaction and cooperation between pharmacists, researchers, and healthcare professionals. I saw firsthand how Cerner Millennium's integrated EHR system made it simple to retrieve patient information, assuring proper medication administration and lowering the possibility of negative outcomes. We were able to find patterns and trends in the use of medications because to the platform's powerful data analysis tools, which helped us with our research on the effectiveness and safety of medications. Overall, Cerner Millennium improved the processes for developing pharmaceutical products and our capacity to undertake evidence-based research.

PROS

Cerner Millennium provides healthcare businesses with a number of benefits. First off, it offers a thorough electronic health record (EHR) system that enables seamless integration and centralized access to patient data, enhancing care coordination and effectiveness. The software's clinical decision support tools help medical personnel make wise treatment choices, cut down on malpractice, and enhance patient outcomes. Additionally supporting interoperability, Cerner Millennium enables data exchange with external systems and promotes collaborative care in a variety of healthcare settings. Furthermore, the platform's strong analytics capabilities enhance population health management projects by enabling enterprises to extract valuable insights from huge datasets.

CONS

Although Cerner Millennium has several advantages, there are a few things to keep in mind. First off, the installation procedure might be difficult and time-consuming and demand a lot of resources and knowledge. Limited customization choices could necessitate changes to healthcare providers' workflow. A high learning curve has been reported by some users, especially for non-technical workers, needing thorough training and continuous assistance. The license and maintenance fees for the software might also be high, especially for smaller healthcare companies. Despite these issues, Cerner Millennium's extensive EHR capability and cutting-edge analytics capabilities transcend these drawbacks and offer a useful tool for healthcare enterprises.

Intuitive, easy to use

PROS

Comprehensive, easy to use. Easy to save favorite “power plans” which streamlines CPOE. Well organized, components easy to find.

CONS

Our facility does not use the mother/baby component, so there is a lot of double charting for nurses and searching for physicians to get a complete picture of what’s going on. That being said, it could be that the center module isn’t very good/worthwhile and that’s why they did it this way. Wish I had a chance to try it out and see..

Millenium Powerchart Works Well - If you have the right version!

PROS

This is an excellent system for inpatient hospital use. It's well organized and easy to find what you're looking for. It's also easy from an administrative/organizational standpoint to create customization

CONS

If you have a version that does not have as many of the robust features it can be very cumbersome and difficult to use and navigate. I've used both a good version and a bad version.

Good EHR

Overall, seemed to be a solid EHR for hospital practice and rounding. Once you learn to navigate all the options, it made rounds actually easier and especially so with history and physicals as well as consults.

PROS

Good program that allowed access to all a patients records with relative ease. Used during rounds for hospital patients. Good for creating macros or templates of notes that you use often. Able to access images within the same program.

CONS

Rather steep learning curve, even after attending prelaunch classes to prepare for the switch. Ultimately able to get the swing of it but I did calculate extra time rounding during the first couple of weeks.

Very great user friendly software

PROS

I think the software is great, we train a lot of new hires and we all work in Cerner all day every day so having a software that can easily be taught to new people is crucial. Making sure it’s straight forward and not confusing is also key.

CONS

The only thing that’s alittle challenging is making sure you are signed into the correct one for the correct markets. You have make sure you know which one to be in otherwise you won’t be able to find the patients you are looking for.

Its a good EHR tool

Cerner is a great tool if Epic is too expensive for organization to afford.

PROS

I lived this tool prior to using Epic. Its a decant tool and greatly helpful if the hospital is small.

CONS

Its not so greatly user friendly. I prefer Epic.

Cerner is not user friendly

PROS

Records are all in one place. There is not really any other benefit to Cerner.

CONS

It is not user friendly. It's difficult to know how to add orders or find the information you're looking for. New hires feel very overwhelmed when learning to use this software. Information is often documented incorrectly because of the confusion.

Cerner Experience

There are no great EMRs that have been developed. Cerner is getting close though

PROS

There are many options for dictation. Dragon, IPad, etc. It is easy to create templates. Integrates well with hospital.

CONS

Cerner is on the expensive side. I wish the IPad and PC notes looked the same. IPad notes have no patient header. Multiple logins.

Worst EMR system ever

I hate it! Worst system ever! I’m planning on leaving my agency because this program has made me hate my job

PROS

Nothing! Horrible system! Not a single Pro about it! I can not think of anything good about this system

CONS

That there’s so many steps to do everything. There’s like 10 steps to doing a progress note…it’s not user friendly at all. I will be leaving my agency purely because this system has made things so much more difficult. My paperwork has easily tripled.

Reasons for switching to Cerner Millennium

Millennium for Check-In

Overall, positive experience. The software is very intuitive which is exactly what is needed for the intended use.

PROS

Ease of use. Support & training. Allows guarantors/patients to register for services themselves quickly and easily.

CONS

No negative comments to report. Although almost any software can always be improved. For example, speech recognition might increase speed of registration process. So that would be an excellent add-on feature to test & deploy.

Reason for choosing Cerner Millennium

See comment above.

Fits to use or need

Used in a hospital setting, overall it is good as it is easy and customizable but usability wise it lacks simple features like not being able to use tab, drop down menu options not alphabetized and typing to search is not intelligent.

PROS

It is highly customizable to the needs of your department or unit and learning it is not time consuming for new members.

CONS

I don't like the fact that you cannot create two defaults in one segment and thus having to load one after another. Also the tab button does not work and you have to use a mouse to move from one field to another, also on the dropbox it is not alphabetized (when you add more it goes to the end of the selection) and you cannot search/filter as you type when picking an option.
