Reliable and easy to use

We use it extensively to stream weekly tutorials, as well as live feed conferences and events. Overall, our experience has been very positive and you can quickly talk to a real persona if you get stuck or something´s not working.

PROS

Dacast is a solid streaming platform backed by an excellent support team which have helped me sort out configuration and integration into our e-learning platforms. I also like the fact that it´s highly customizable and integrates well into OBS studio and HTML pages, as well as Facebook. All in all, the quality/value for money ratio is well worth it.

CONS

The latency is annoying (can be up to 15 secondes) and the upgrade payment to eliminate it is really too expensive.

Reasons for switching to Dacast

Not flexible and interrupted by ads.

Vendor Response

Hi John! Thanks a lot for your comments, we take the point on the pricing. We are always trying to find cheaper solutions to put on the market, we will announce it if we have anything new on this!

A Little Rough Around the Edges, but Fantastic Value for Money

Dacast helps our team keep focus and lets us fully control our content, while keeping videos private and only accessible to our team. I've been quiet pleased with how seamlessly we were able to integrate it into our training materials in the place of YouTube.

PROS

Dacast is a great platform for hosting and live streaming videos. You can control the style of the video player without any third party branding or recommended videos like YouTube has. It creates a lot more streamlined and focused viewing experience for employee training videos.

CONS

The overall polish of Dacast could be improved. Changes to video info isn't always saved the first time. Uploads don't always finish uploading the first time. Processing to full HD quality can take a while too. The product works well overall, but it could use that extra bit of fine tuning.

Reason for choosing Dacast

Brightcove had some better and easier to use features, but the price tag was outrageous, at least for a company of our size.

Reasons for switching to Dacast

Purely as a video streaming platform, YouTube is great. But there are so many extra bells and whistles (ads, recommended videos, auto-playing videos, YouTube branding) that distract and, on occasion, offend our employees. Some recommended videos on the side can be pretty messed up. None of that is an issue with Dacast.

Empty promises with quick support

Overall, I wish I'd selected another platform Honestly, the amount of time and effort spent in figuring out the bugs I described above was not worth it. I have about 2000 people that are actively using the platform I build and they trust me to give them a reliable way to stream live classes (dance classes) and record them for later viewing, and I feel I've let them down choosing DaCast I do not recommend DaCast to anyone

PROS

They don't make you pay for a full year and the price is a bit lower compared with vimeo and some other platforms i checked. Fast response support (not good, but fast)

CONS

Features don't work!! 1. Analytics - does not work at all (support: "as soon as it works we will notify you") 2. VOD - recorded live streams have multiple 'holes' in them, most recordings have 10-20 minute holes missing in the recording!! Also, one of the recordings was corrupted after about 5 minutes in the stream, so 1.2 hour video = trashed. 3. LiveStreams - a huge bug in the token refreshing within the player, making anyone who views the stream refresh the browser every 6 minutes (as it stops the stream) 4. Support - the support is a fast-response-low-on-knowledge kind of support. The more knowing people are not responding at all (been 3 weeks with no response) 5. They have lots of articles that seem like someone who knows a thing or two about streaming wrote, that was mostly the reason I decided to invest my time in DaCast, it seemed promising (but only promising, no results)

Reason for choosing Dacast

mostly pricing options and good articles

Dacast meets our small business needs

Our clients aren't made of money, so we needed a streaming platform that would allow us to stream community/local events and not lose money on the deal. Customer service is good. The platform is not super polished compared to some competitors, but we've seen many improvements over the last 2 years.

PROS

We needed a simple and affordable platform for live streaming events. While Dacast isn't perfect, the streams are reliable and that is very important to us. There is not much else to say, it meets our needs!

CONS

Connection times to viewers to the streams have been long (30 seconds to minutes to connect) even with the most recent update to their platform. Reviewing data for how many viewers watched each event is clumsy, especially when we have back-to-back events on the same channel, but still want to see the data separated. Splash screens take a long time to load on the streaming pages. Backoffice tasks can be accidently missed because each section of settings requires you to press a save button at the bottom of the page. Subscription details aren't explain very well, for example if you purchase a certain package you get data but it's parcelled out over the year, not given to you all at once to use. This results in overage charges but fortunately you can enable protection to add data automatically when you run out so your streams never go down.

Reason for choosing Dacast

Mainly price, as well as lack of certain features that could negatively impact our stream. For example, if copyrighted music plays (accidentally, or even in the case your client has purchased the rights to use the music) in the background of some platforms they will shut your stream down leaving you and your clients in a difficult position.

Reasons for switching to Dacast

StreamVu switched to focusing on educational platforms, they are an amazing company otherwise and a super friendly bunch of people.

Solid Church Live Stream Platform

Excellent reliability. Been streaming with Dacast for sever years now and never had a failure. Solid, reliable streaming every time

PROS

Dacast gives us all we need to live stream our services at a competetive price. We're not a huge ministry so price is important to us, and other providers don't seem to get that and offer such competetive rates for small users who want to grow

CONS

The customised OBS version needs updating. You don't have to use it, but it's a good option for new starters

Reason for choosing Dacast

We looked at many other options

Reasons for switching to Dacast

Because they got rid of their free option and the cheapest entry-level paid offering was way too big and costly for our needs

A great alternative for broadcasting

Almost a year broadcasting, working just fine on a daily basis.

PROS

The great variety of settings you have to get the image do you need. The price it's also great for my needs.

CONS

In my case, the learning curve. I was not familiar with this kind of broadcasting.

Reason for choosing Dacast

Price. Considering the number of my viewers, it was the best option.

Reasons for switching to Dacast

Price. Ustream was adquired by a big company and the change of prices was something we could not afford.

Vendor Response

Hello Gandhi! Thanks a lot for your comment, glad to hear you use our services every day. We take the point on the learning curve: it is important for us to get people to live easily, but it can be sometimes harder than expected.

Great product for Churches

Very easy to use, live-stream has never failed.

PROS

The live stream file that it provides is easy to integrate with subsplash, an app developer/platform we use for our custom app.

CONS

When you delete videos that have been recorded, you don’t get your memory back. When you’re not streaming, the not available feature doesn’t work with subsplash, instead you get an error.

Reason for choosing Dacast

The free trial and testing I was able to do ahead to see what features worked with my platforms.

A decent live streaming and video hosting company for professional use.

Overall the service has been reliable but lacks some features and convenience that I expected at this price point. I am currently looking for another cheaper provider for my live streams.

PROS

What brought me to this software was the integration with InPlayer, which allows monetization of live streams and videos. We were looking to quickly deploy a Dacast workflow for a football team that wanted to charge online viewers and Dacast worked well in that application, both reliability and monetization features. The cost and reporting of bandwidth is transparent.

CONS

The control panel seems a little buggy with some changes requiring to confirm with a button at the bottom, others do not. Changes take a few seconds to take in order to do anything else with the page. In general, the control panel could use some work. I would like to see the ability to email the stream encoder settings to yourself or an app that allows you to see the settings. The recording feature has been unreliable with some missed portions and multiple recordings for the same stream. YouTube was able to record the stream reliably.

Reason for choosing Dacast

Monetization features and transparent pricing.

quick and easy to use.

easy to use and setup means I could focus on other areas of production instead of worrying about server side or live-streaming problems.

PROS

Integration and ease of use made any of my live-stream setups simple and fast.

CONS

Can be lacking simple customization like live chat, but there are plug-ins for this but may take some extra time to setup.

Reason for choosing Dacast

Different use cases, da cast was easier to use and setup for just live-streaming. It does live-streaming video very well.

They doubled the price of our subscription

Dacast worked for us for a few years and did what it was supposed to. We only needed it for live streaming and it did that well. The analytics sometimes worked and sometimes didn't. We were happy with it when we only had the $19/month package but when they raised the price to $39/month we switched to another provider. We didn't need the extra storage or pay wall features they were adding so the price increase didn't make sense for us to keep the service. We switched to another provider and are very happy with our decision. Dacast also made it very difficult to cancel their service and in the end the only reason they did cancel it was because our card on file was expired. Otherwise they would have ignored my multiple emails and requests to cancel the service and I doubt I would have been refunded a full amount.

PROS

It worked reliably. It didn't do anything fancy which made it solid, and they did make things easy to change on my end when they upgraded their distribution services. Once you set it up, you kind of forgot about it because it just sat in the background and worked, which was ideal.

CONS

It didn't stream to social media, you had to constantly remember to turn on live stream recording.

Best Service Available

I've checked out virtually all other services. They all have their pros and cons but I've found DaCast has far fewer cons. Pricing is the biggest difference. DaCast is actually affordable for any kind of broadcast and combining that with the solid reliability puts DaCast way ahead of the rest. We continue to check the other services, as the years go by, but we keep coming back to DaCast. There's just no reason to go anyplace else.

PROS

We don't broadcast often, but when we do, we need to know that our CDN is solid with little chance of dropping. DaCast has proven their reliability, to us. We started with them when they first came on-line. Back then, there were little hickups as would be expected. In my opinion, DaCast is superior in every way to all other similar services. We did a week long broadcast recently, and had zero drops! Those were 12 hour days and not one drop. That's amazing. Setup is easy and quick. I setup a new broadcast channel in about 10 minutes and was testing the broadcast. We use Wirecast and DaCast is simple to interface with it. Support is available via chat and is pretty quick to connect and help you. That's huge when you're in the middle of a broadcast and need help.

CONS

The only con is in setting up overage protection. You can select it, and it appears that you have it, but you might not actually have it and there's no way to know that you don't. Until you go over your allocated bandwidth.

Vendor Response

Hi Kent, we appreciate your review and it is always a pleasure to do business with you. Hopefully we can optimize the overage protection soon enough so your streaming experience becomes even better! Talk to you soon.

Good product, good tech support, only adequate secondary programming support of the service

The overall useability of the service is very good, however the programmers need to take issues more seriously and get them corrected. It is very frustrating to have to check every Sunday to see if there is enough room for a recording to take place.

PROS

The ease of use, straight forward website and stream programming functions

CONS

When we signed up for Dacast the website worked great but then after a few months Dacast went through a full website redesign. After that I have had problems with the website tracking how much space our recordings are taking up. It has been about a year and the problem is still not fully resolved. The website does not track our recordings correctly. I counts a recording and deducts the size of the recording from our allotted space however it will not deduct that space when I have deleted the recording from their storage thus stopping the system from allowing a recording to be saved. Almost ever Sunday for over a year I have had to contact tech support to clear our storage so a recording can take place. I know this is a software issue however it should not take this long to correct the problem.

This will give us an indication of when people are watching and when peple are leaving. This informs programming decisions for future broadcasts. ie what engages the audiene, and what does not.

Excellent customer support! Cost, features, and support are the reasons to consider them.

I migrated away from Wistia (a fine company) to VZAAR. Why? Because VZAAR doesn't charge per video. I host over 400 smaller-sized videos and growing. That's a big bill at 25 cents per video at Wistia. So that was a "good enough" reason to change. But here's what I found in VZAAR that was a pleasant surprise during their free trial: AMAZINGLY EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SUPPORT. The chat support was phenomenal. The response times were excellent. They were patient as I learned and navigated their admittedly more complex UI. There are some things that Wistia (or others) may do slightly better. For now. But for SUPPORT... VZAAR wins the day. I highly recommend VZAAR to anyone looking for rock-solid hosting, fast performance, fair pricing, mature hosting features, and excellent support. Try them out for free for 30 days. You won't be disappointed.

PROS

Cost and features. Also, some of the best support I've ever received. Amazingly powerful and versatile.

CONS

The back-end UI is in need of updating. But once I got used to it, it was not a deal-killer at all. Don't let the initial appearance of the back-end scare you off.
