Electrical Bid Manager Estimating Software

Electrical Bid Manager Enterprise is the electrical bid management offering of Vision InfoSoft. The software has served the bid management needs of over 11,800 commercial and residential electrical contractors. We like the product for its ability to handle small jobs as well as projects with larger budgets.

Vision InfoSoft offers their estimating and takeoff solutions for electrical contractors on a best-of-breed basis. Companies can expect to find features for conversion calculators, on-screen takeoff, proposal generators, and conceptual estimates. Electrical Bid Manager Enterprise comes with an integrated pricing database service that helps electrical contractors incorporate the most recent prices of electrical supplies into their bids.

Vision InfoSoft offers three editions of their Electrical Bid Manager Enterprise offering: Classic, Plus, and Pro. The Classic version is great for light users while the Pro version is more suited for electrical contractors that need significant editing capabilities in their programs to manage bids and estimates.

Vision InfoSoft has won back to back awards for Electrical Bid Manager Enterprise in the last two years. In 2010 they won the NECA Showstopper award and in 2011 received the Construtech Commercial Top Product prize. The product has also been recognized in Electrical Current Magazine.

This is a great, no non-sense tool that helps me get my job done and be more efficient. Highly recommended for the experienced estimator that needs to crank out estimates in a short time frame.

Pros

Familiarity, relevant features, ease of use, integration with PlanSwift

Cons

UI is a bit outdated for 2017

The basic features of the program are easy to use and will allow any estimator with a little experience to jump right in and begin. The only downside and I have seen this with all these estimating programs are if you want to learn how to utilize the full capabilities of the program you will have to take a training class and they can be pricey. Overall I am happy with my choice and would recommend this to others.

I have been using EBM for about a year now and I have grown to LOVE it. This software is extremely user-friendly. It is easy to find material or import it from EPIC. You can find anything. It is also easy to go back and edit when you have a mistake or if there has been a change.

I became acquainted with EBM through another Electrical Contractor, Cannon Electric. After learning the software several thing about the product really impressed me, the first was the lay out of the materials and spreadsheet format, the ease of identifying specific items associated with each portion of the quote, and the bid break out page, however after owning the product for several years, and going through several PC's with both viruses and simple upgrades, the thing that disappoint me the most with this program, is when you purchase it you think you own it, but if you don't use the program for 30 days it shut down, if I replace my PC which seem to be common for me I had to repurchase the program, or pay a fee to get back what I had purchased.

Pros

The first was the lay out of the materials and spreadsheet format, the ease of identifying specific items associated with each portion of the quote, and the bid break out page

Cons

when you purchase it you think you own it, but if you don't use the program for 30 days it shut down, if I replace my PC which seem to be common for me I had to repurchase the program, or pay a fee to get back what I had purchased, there is no transference ability.

Advice to Others

Prior to using EBM, I was working with Accu-Bid with a Union shop, Conti Electric, although I prefer EBM to Accu-Bid, when you purchase the unit its belong to you on what ever PC you use.

I down loaded this product just to see how these people who most likely never even worked in the electrical field would do it...I found this software to be for maybe a company just starting out...there's almost too much stuff to fill out in order to make a bid

Pros

It keeps your record straight, and makes sure you don't forget anything that maybe you bought and forgot

Cons

The price

Advice to Others

That it's a good thing to keep records and material on but for bidding just too much to fill out in order to make a proper bid..and the cost is ridiculous

I have used EBM for over the past year, it has reduced the time spent quoting by approximately 70%. Linked with Plan swift reduces our consumable waste immensely by not printing jobs until they are landed. The functionality between the two packages interfaces easily and makes it a breeze to navigate your take offs. Selectable colors on pipe runs and circuitry makes items easily distinguishable for as built drawings. By taking the extra few minutes to layout your project during the quote process saves much time over having to create as built drawings from scratch after the project is complete.

Pros

Ease of use, EBM is a very stable and versatile product.

Cons

Plan swift can be a little temperamental

Advice to Others

I would highly recommend this product. not only do I use this for my construction projects, I have also generated quotes for the automation end of our company in the automotive sector.

The two products used together make on-screen estimating very effective.
No need for hard copy prints to be made and manual takeoffs to be done.
Just use the on-screen format, and have quantities calculated for you.

Advice to Others

Take advantage of support offered in the training and usage of the software.

Overall a good product that does what it advertises. The only gripes that I have with it are its ease of use and accessibility. It requires more technical knowledge and work than its competitors. This isn't to say that this is a bad piece of software, its price is definitely affordable and can fit into a lot of budgets. There just isn't much that stands out about the software.

Very important to and organization is the ability to upload/UPDATE Pricing on a regular basis, with Minimal problems. EBM has a few issues here, like price per C vs price per M, etc.
Easy to manipulate labor rates.

it is extremely flexible in breaking a job into many parts and being able to change things as needed throughout the bid process. You can always pull portions out of the main job should change orders or alternate options need to be estimated along with the main part of the job. take off is easy and flexible. Job extensions are quick and you can verify pricing on large $ materials quickly. Form letters make the final bid preparation painless and help to provide consistant format across proposals.

Likes Least

A couple of items although they are definately not reasons to stay awaywould be:
-> Pricing is not updateable with Trade Service (they have some bad blood between them) so i have to use their price updates.
-> It would be nice if they had a report generator so one could generate some reports that are not available in the program
-> would like to see more format options in the form letters. Rich text formatting would be a nice addition to an already useable feature

Recommendations

There are a lot of programs out there and this is one area where price is not an indicator of quality. Look carefully (try before you buy!) and take off a job that has many alternates and options if possible because that is where the real flexibility is key. See if you can make large changes to the breakouts with minimal efforts as these things seem to happen in the real world. You want it to work for you, not against you. Once you make a decision learn it well to make it really function for you. Don't expect the first estimate to be dead on. There are a lot of variables and adjustments that can be made to labor rates and pricing discounts and until you get these tuned to your company and style it may be a bit rocky. But once you get things adjusted you will know that what it says can be relied on.
