Buildertrend Web-Based Construction Software


 

Buildertrend is a construction management system for home builders, remodelers, specialty contractors and general contractors. It combines project scheduling, project management, financial management, customer management and service management in a single suite. As a cloud-based platform, this system can be accessed online with a computer or mobile device.

Buildertrend provides pre-sale tools including a built-in customer relationship management (CRM) system, quick bids and proposals. Project management tools include scheduling, budgeting, time sheets and more. Customer management tools include change order and selection management, warranty requests and payment processing.

This system also integrates with other solutions such as QuickBooks, Xero and various dedicated estimating and takeoff tools.

Buildertrend provides each company with an account manager to provide training and support. Also included are customized branding, daily webinars, support chat, the Buildertrend Learning Community, a 24/7 help section and Buildertrend University.

Could Be a Great Solution for a General Contractor with Large Projects

Overall, BuilderTrend seems like it could be a good solution for companies that build homes or do other large projects like that with subcontractors. It definitely is not designed for companies that do small jobs or many jobs with one client. Be ready with questions when meeting with your BT rep during your 90 day trail time. Have them show you how things are done so you understand how it works 100%. There were a few features that were promised to us, but then when we asked more specific questions, it turned out that those things were not as promised. However, probably a great tool for a general contractor needing to stay organized and wanting to stay transparent to clients!

Pros

- Time tracking with overtime automatically calculated.
- Job costing with custom jobs/types. Can generate reports so you can see effectiveness of employees.
- Different views for job schedule which can be nice - calendar, agenda, gantt.
- Can store unlimited photos, videos, and documents. All are organized in folders and can be shared with the client easily.
- Can assign multiple employees to jobs as well as subcontractors and their prices and information.
- It will show your current costs, so you can see how much the job is costing the client in real time.
- Most everything is customizable and template based.
- You are assigned a specific rep from BT that will answer all questions and do live training with you - Very helpful.
- There are a fair amount of videos available online from other users who are also using the software.
- Effective for companies that deal with large jobs with many moving parts and subcontractors.
- Client portal for each job that includes notes, pictures, videos, progress, invoices, etc. This all can be hidden from clients as well and customized to how much information you are wanting to share.

Cons

- Calendar feature doesn't allow you to drag and drop jobs or scheduled items and also allow clients to view it. You can either drag and drop or have it be viewable to clients. This is fairly simple to switch back and forth, but it adds extra steps.
- App is not user friendly for employees or technicians. There are too many buttons to press.
- This software only works well for companies that handle large jobs that are long term with many elements.
- To-do's are fairly simple and not well designed. Great that you can add photos, videos, docs to each checklist item. But there's only 1 checkbox per item, no title for the item, and no way to make the to-do list required for employees.
- If you don't press "save" after uploading photos/videos or writing notes, they will disappear and you can easily erase notes. No window that reminds you to save work before moving on.
- Extremely job-based. You must chose the job and then you can view schedule, clock in, add notes, complete checklist, etc. Not easy to view all jobs at same time.
- No line items for invoices.
- Client portal is set up to be job-based and not client-based. That means every job will have to have a different username for the client to log into.
- Overtime that is automatically calculated doesn't automatically calculate a higher rate on the client's budget.
- Learning curve is overall fairly steep. As a fast learner and pretty technically able, it took me a while to figure out how the software worked. Not super intuitive.
- Not a very updated or attractive look.

Cons

I really can't enough about the customer service. They always answer the question I ask. My Customer Success Manager, , is so unbelievable. If every rep I had in my construction was like him, I would have no problems. But, all the other people who answer the phone are great, too. I attended a BTUniversity event, and the event planner, Danielle, for that was amazing, as well. EVERYONE I have ever dealt with (after sales) at BT has the best attitude. They are helpful and lovely and all things good. For those of you who do not know, they have bootstrapped the funding for this company. As a lot of us in construction have done, I find it extremely respectful. The guys who are in charge have done a great job and are very humble coupled with excitement for their business.

Pros

This online management system is so great in every way. It is so intuitive to the construction community. I love the ease of scheduling, the ease of selections, having everything in one place for our team, the level of permissions per team member, and the customer support is off the charts - I don't think there's a rating high enough for them. I used a competitor of BT for years, and it's like driving a Tesla compared to a ModelT.

Cons

What I like least is that I didn't find it sooner and the sales experience...barf. I get why they sell the way they do, but it's icky. Eventually, I forgot about how gross it was because the customer service is unimaginably great! Don't not sign-up because your sales person lacks authenticity and makes your skin crawl. The experience after is totally worth it.

Best software out there

The product support team is amazing, they’re training sessions are not limited which I found essential to getting to know the aoftware better. Once you have been trained the software is so easy to navigate through. My favourite part is the main home portal screen, it shows you everything you want to see.

Cons

I’m certainly not too sure what say about cons to be honest, it ticks all the boxes for me. Maybe pricing can me a little lower but other than that nothing else.

Does what we need without work arounds

It works without having to spend hours training. The steps are intuitive. Create a lead. follow up on the lead. Convert to quote. convert to order. Project maintenance. After install marketing. It is all there.

Cons

I have no real complaints about this software. So far, every time I have set out to accomplish a task enableled in of previous custom software I haave been able to do the same thing, or close enough, with the standard features of Buildertrend.

It is a great management tool, very practical and easy to use. It only lacks a robust scheduling tool.

Pros

Reliable and Fast. You can concentrate on each job, no more loosing time finding emails or pictures of the job. You make each team member accountable.

Cons

Poor scheduling. I used Primavera in the past and mainly scheduling, so it was the most important aspect for me in my experience. Buildertrend's features are a trade off, you can't be so detailed in controlling "time" but you control so many more aspects of the job I never imagined.

This program really helps me stay on top of tasks and everyone else's tasks as well. It helps me meet deadlines and track everything.

Cons

The only thing that interferes with my working on Builder Trend is when Builder Trend is working on the actual site. Sometimes it runs slow or the site drops. This does not happen for long periods of time but would be nice if Builder Trend could do this after most business hours.

Really Cool Software

I would recommend this to the younger generation of contractors. For me, this was almost overwhelming to try and learn and enter all the information.

Pros

On top of the CRM portion of the program, you can allow customers to see certain things like schedules and photos so they are in the look without you having to take the time to update them. It even integrates Lien Waivers into the program which I have not seen in any of the other programs I use.

Cons

With the massive amount of features the program has, the learning curve is a bit steep for me. I used it for a short time and then went back to my old ways. I am more of a pen and paper type of contractor but for the younger folks, this is a great tool.

A centralized database for managing projects, clients and schedules.

Pros

The customer service is fantastic. We have a dedicated rep who responds immediately and works with us to resolve any issues. Buildertrend also helps us integrate their online tools with our current project management systems, increasing efficiency and creating a very user-friendly experience.

Cons

While we appreciate the scheduling function and its ability to link subcontractors and users to tasks, some of the tools within the tasks are difficult to navigate, such as the successor/predecessor links between tasks. In addition, adding increased options in the views function would enable the user to see the overall schedule more easily.
Lastly, it would be nice to be able to see a high level calendar that shows all active jobs in relation to one another.

Cons

Sometimes buildertrend will glitch when scheduling for jobs but other than that I love this software!

Jobs run faster, smoother, and the ability to work cooperatively with document sharing has been a game changer on many projects. Everyone is working from the same set of documents.

Pros

We work for a commercial construction company. While many GC's use Procore (a lot more money), we have found that BT does everything we need it to do. It offers cost reporting, invoicing, billing, change orders, submittals, document sharing, labor tracking, scheduling, lead management, and much more. There aren't many programs out there that will compete at this level for this price.

Cons

The lead management can be a little clunky to navigate at times. It's integration with Quickbooks could be better. The ability to batch edit clock times would be helpful if you have a larger work staff that is prone to making mistakes.

I like that the clients can see what we are expecting to happen each day. I think it is great that we can set up a profile for them. It limits confusion in regard to what we have said and what we are saying now. Change orders being posted on there has really helped us track pricing and monies.

The whole system just tends to feel a little clunky. Moving dates on the calendar and adding resources, it is not always intuitive and that can sometimes make things more difficult than they need to be.

Pros

It has every feature you will ever need for a construction business large or small. The estimates are easy to create and everything is kept right in the system with no need for messy paperwork.

Cons

It costs a small fortune. I understand why they charge so much, as they are always right there to help when you need it, but for a small business like ours it is a great expense.

The software designers at Buildertrend know what they're doing. The mobile app makes it easy to access anywhere. Omaha has a lot of quality data / app folks and it comes into play nicely with companies like Buildertrend.

Cons

This programme is really easy to use and helped me to stay on top of my tasks as well as my teams tasks. Meeting deadlines has never been easier.

Cons

for this to work well your entire workforce needs to use it. we had some that loved it and some that didn't buy into it so it didn't work very well until it became mandatory. The estimating side did did change a long time ago which made my job harder and in the end made us leave the system for something more simple.

I can forward bids, images, schedules, work flow updates and so much more to unlimited people. Very nice that I can send, for example, engineer field change notes as well as images and receive back the corrected information

Although not critical it would be nice to add a category or feature for OPTIONS. Not only in the bid area but in the construction schedule

Not going to lie, the software was a bit frustrating and there wasn't a lot to celebrate. Think the greatest "Pros" were on the ability to gain insights to job statuses quickly.

Cons

Suffers from a cluttered interface. The paradox of choice. Too many options/inputs/menus is not only bad design, it's hard to navigate. I found myself searching several locations for the same information.
