Buildertrend Web-Based Construction Software


Buildertrend is a construction management system for home builders, remodelers, specialty contractors and general contractors. It combines project scheduling, project management, financial management, customer management and service management in a single suite. As a cloud-based platform, this system can be accessed online with a computer or mobile device.

Buildertrend provides pre-sale tools including a built-in customer relationship management (CRM) system, quick bids and proposals. Project management tools include scheduling, budgeting, time sheets and more. Customer management tools include change order and selection management, warranty requests and payment processing.

This system also integrates with other solutions such as QuickBooks, Xero and various dedicated estimating and takeoff tools.

Buildertrend provides each company with an account manager to provide training and support. Also included are customized branding, daily webinars, support chat, the Buildertrend Learning Community, a 24/7 help section and Buildertrend University.

    It seems quite comprehensive and it's nice to have an all in one system I guess.

    Cons

    Clearly targeted to the US market and it shows with the way that some of the system is designed. My biggest gripe is that incorporating Buildertrend's lead form into your website necessitates loading a large number of script libraries and it has a noticeable impact on site speed. For something that is geared towards lead generation this is pretty much an unforgivable sin as we know that every second you add to site load is turning people away. At last count there were 13 .js resources being loaded (not combined either) and 6 .css resources. So if website integration is important to you this is something you should consider carefully.

    I was very impressed with this software. This software has great functionalitiy that allows it to be used many different ways to suit the client. It is very well priced and has unlimited training support and file storage. Additionally, I looked at many apps to aid my client this one by far has better reports than those of similar priced apps.

    This software is priced by job/month. It can be used to classify all activity under one job, doing so will only slightly change the available options for jobs.

    The variation of seeing templates and documents is good. I like its friendly-user ability in scheduling and selections.

    Best feature is the ability to interface with 3rd party software - example Buildertrend with QuickBooks. Function works amazingly well and any glitches encountered are easily resolved. Another Pro would be the ability for homeowners to monitor the progress of their home building - unfortunately this feature is only as good as the construction progress inputs

    Cons

    Homeowners often misunderstand the information shared with them - there needs to be additional checks and balances so homeowners are not misled or confused. Example - AR balances - customers are often confused between billed AR and paid AR.

    The time clock feature alone is worth the per project cost.

    Pros

    User interface makes perfect sense. Everything is where is should be. Data entry is fast, server speed is good, does everything is says it does. With a little set up time you will be rolling this out very fast. Flat price per project with unlimited users.

    Cons

    Estimating doesn't seem to be able to break individual items into Labour Material Subcontract Equipment and Other categories. Get by this by creating multiple items not a huge deal.

    Buildertrend makes it extremely easy for all employees to access important documents and find information they need without asking supervisors constantly.

    Pros

    I appreciate how organized the software is. It is extremely easy to navigate. I also like how well the software app works on my mobile device.

    I dislike that it would convert my images to lower resolution images upon upload.

    Lots of pretty perks, missing lots of real work necessities

    Using this for a couple months, this product does a lot and is pretty easy to use. It connects to your quick books account and keeps your whole company together under one umbrella

    Cons

    It is missing so much, and very little room to change anything. Basically its like these new web site builders. Really pretty to look at, but once you want to start customize the actual working side of the product you start hitting road block. We just wanted to change a title on a report that we had to use, and fail it couldn't do that. There was so many times that we wanted to do something that seemed like it should obviously be in a project management program, and it was nowhere to be found, and when I call to ask they just say sorry we don't have that and there is no work around.

    The biggest thing we like about BuilderTrend is all the features available at our fingertips. We are able to customize the software to best fit our contracting challenges and goals. The cost catalog is going to help us prepare and present proposals much more efficiently than we currently are. It also helps in training our sales reps much easier.

    Cons

    One thing we would like to have in our cost catalog is a way to price out square footage for decking products. As the software is right now we have to manually calculate different prices for square footage, but we are told that the development team at BuilderTrend is working on an update to meet this specific need!

    Pros

    We used Builder Trend to help manage our remodel projects. This software is ROBUST! We are able to manage bids, leads, proposals before the project starts. We are also able to manage the project as it progresses. We can assign jobs to our team, share photos, take daily log notes of the job progress. Finally, we're able to facilitate the payment process and it makes adding change orders a breeze! This has really made the process of renovating projects simpler!

    Cons

    The pricing is very high. It starts at very and this only allows 1 project per year. If you're rolling in projects left and right then it makes sense, but at a very high per project... it makes it tough to budget it in.

    Customer service is fantastic and internally works fairly well. Client support is available when you need them.

    When we add our markup to allowances it appears to the client as though there allowance is inclusive of the markup when the true allowance is not including the markup. What is the point of including a markup if the client is going to spend it? The markup is supposed to be profit.

    I highly recommend the product becasue it is a very good and comprehensive product but mostley the customer service is exceptional

    Pros

    I like the overall product however, what I like the most is the customer service that your people provide. I have called in to the help desk, I have regular scheduled trainings with my account manager and I have also used the chat room assist. Every person that I have communicated with have been very fluent and capable in builder trend software. The customer service is exceptional.

    Cons

    Nothing, I like everything thus far. It is taking me a while to absorb everything to be able to affectively use the software however, that is on me not builder trend

    Could Be a Great Solution for a General Contractor with Large Projects

    Overall, BuilderTrend seems like it could be a good solution for companies that build homes or do other large projects like that with subcontractors. It definitely is not designed for companies that do small jobs or many jobs with one client. Be ready with questions when meeting with your BT rep during your 90 day trail time. Have them show you how things are done so you understand how it works 100%. There were a few features that were promised to us, but then when we asked more specific questions, it turned out that those things were not as promised. However, probably a great tool for a general contractor needing to stay organized and wanting to stay transparent to clients!

    Pros

    - Time tracking with overtime automatically calculated.
    - Job costing with custom jobs/types. Can generate reports so you can see effectiveness of employees.
    - Different views for job schedule which can be nice - calendar, agenda, gantt.
    - Can store unlimited photos, videos, and documents. All are organized in folders and can be shared with the client easily.
    - Can assign multiple employees to jobs as well as subcontractors and their prices and information.
    - It will show your current costs, so you can see how much the job is costing the client in real time.
    - Most everything is customizable and template based.
    - You are assigned a specific rep from BT that will answer all questions and do live training with you - Very helpful.
    - There are a fair amount of videos available online from other users who are also using the software.
    - Effective for companies that deal with large jobs with many moving parts and subcontractors.
    - Client portal for each job that includes notes, pictures, videos, progress, invoices, etc. This all can be hidden from clients as well and customized to how much information you are wanting to share.

    Cons

    - Calendar feature doesn't allow you to drag and drop jobs or scheduled items and also allow clients to view it. You can either drag and drop or have it be viewable to clients. This is fairly simple to switch back and forth, but it adds extra steps.
    - App is not user friendly for employees or technicians. There are too many buttons to press.
    - This software only works well for companies that handle large jobs that are long term with many elements.
    - To-do's are fairly simple and not well designed. Great that you can add photos, videos, docs to each checklist item. But there's only 1 checkbox per item, no title for the item, and no way to make the to-do list required for employees.
    - If you don't press "save" after uploading photos/videos or writing notes, they will disappear and you can easily erase notes. No window that reminds you to save work before moving on.
    - Extremely job-based. You must chose the job and then you can view schedule, clock in, add notes, complete checklist, etc. Not easy to view all jobs at same time.
    - No line items for invoices.
    - Client portal is set up to be job-based and not client-based. That means every job will have to have a different username for the client to log into.
    - Overtime that is automatically calculated doesn't automatically calculate a higher rate on the client's budget.
    - Learning curve is overall fairly steep. As a fast learner and pretty technically able, it took me a while to figure out how the software worked. Not super intuitive.
    - Not a very updated or attractive look.
