Exact JobBOSS Software

Exact JobBOSS is one of the most popular quoting, planning, and manufacturing execution systems in the market today. It is most often adopted by small to mid-sized job shops using Quickbooks, Excel, and/or paper folders looking to streamline operations, improve visibility, and grow revenue.

The software offers complete functionality for sales quoting, order and job creation, job scheduling (both infinite and finite capacity), material requirements planning (MRP), and manufacturing execution (MES) / shop floor control. In JobBOSS reviews, users often praise the system for its ease of use in setting up and creating job quotes.

We find that one key selling point for many JobBOSS users is the fact that it can integrate seamlessly with Quickbooks, or be sold with its own JobBOSS accounting module. The other major selling point is the JobBOSS pricing. Many companies can get into the JobBOSS system for as little as a few thousand dollars, leading Exact JobBOSS to become a very popular option for firms trying to avoid a large investment. JobBOSS ERP software can be deployed on-premise.

Exact was founded in 1984 by young entrepreneurs working out of their garage. Over time, Exact has retained its commitment to software for SMBs and has hence become one of the bigger names in ERP software. Exact is headquartered in the Netherlands while the JobBOSS offices are located in the United States

Due to its popularity--and high ratings in JobBOSS reviews from customers--we very often recommend this software to small and medium sized companies looking for a very affordable system as well as larger companies in need of a robust ERP solution.

Exact JobBOSS Review

Ease-of-use

It's not user-friendly. It seems that it needs to be updated.

Functionality

It never got 100% going. If you got past the learning curve, it may be good.

Product Quality

The user interface is not easy to use; it takes time to find what you are looking for.

Customer Support

They were not willing to help when I needed it.

Likes Best

There's nothing I like about this product.

Likes Least

They would not give me an installation document after my maintenance contract ended. After I told them I was going to switch to E2, they finally gave it to me.

Recommendations

I would recommend looking elsewhere for a system.

Quirky product

Ease-of-use

Many of the functions/modules are not in any way intuitive. The program crashes frequently. There is no connection between the production module and the accounting module, which is probably good, as the program allows transaction changes/deletions after posting.

Functionality

It tracks data and provides costing information. When information is entered correctly, it provides good statistics about efficiency, job cost variances, etc.

Product Quality

My biggest issue is the random, frequent crashes. The system locks you out, and that has caused data loss/corruption, and it causes production problems.

Customer Support

It sometimes takes time to get an answer but the customer support people have been responsive and have provided a solution or workaround for issues.

Likes Best

It is a low cost alternative for small shops. Provided you have the proper training and are able to enter information correctly, it does provide a good deal of information about job costing, efficiency ratings, etc.

Likes Least

Much of the functionality is not intuitive, the platform is less than stable, and it allows users to delete/change items after posting, which completely corrupts any kind of audit trail.

Recommendations

This software is good for small shops without a huge volume. I would also say that the classes (while very expensive) are going to be a requirement if you want to use the full functionality of the software.

JobBOSS is always there and always user-friendly

Ease-of-use

The product is user friendly, and the modules are easy to navigate between.

Functionality

From the shop floor to the front office, enter the information, print out the reports, and run the business.

Product Quality

It always runs. They update frequently, and there are little or no bugs. The quality is tops.

Customer Support

The support team goes above and beyond to solve any issues.

Likes Best

The product is easy to use. The support staff is easy to talk to and knows the software and applications.

Likes Least

There's nothing I like least about the vendor. I wish the software was a little more on the retail side, but that is more our niche in the business.

Recommendations

We have looked at other software applications over the years, and no one knows the job shop business like JobBOSS does. I've seen a lot of shops buy elsewhere and then buy Jobboss. So look, but spend your money wisely.

Good software

Ease-of-use

For someone who understands how ERPs work, JobBOSS is easy to navigate. There is logic in it. And a person with some patience will figure it out even if it's something they see for the first time. The help book is actually helpful too.

Functionality

The reports are very basic. Even on the production analysis side, it could be more sophisticated for production, small shop-oriented software.

Product Quality

Good quality, barely any bugs. Updates are easy to do.

Customer Support

Support reps are very good at Exact. They are knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. That's all I need to help me solve a software issue.

Likes Best

JobBOSS was very easy to learn to use. As a vendor, Exact's support reps are always very friendly and helpful with solutions.

Likes Least

Reports could be more sophisticated. Data Collection is not user-friendly and definitely doesn't deliver the promised level of flexibility.

I can't say anything negative about Exact as a vendor. They've treated us very good.

Recommendations

I think the best strategy on picking software like this is to actually go and spend a day with someone who is already using it. Watch them work in it, go through every module to see what they think about it, and see how it would work for your business.

JobBOSS review

Ease-of-use

This product generally flows well from one process or function to another. Users can be trained and become productive in a short period of time.

Functionality

No packaged software product's functionality will fit every business' requirements perfectly. With that said, there are always some issues that require us to work around what the software can and can't do in specific situations.

Product Quality

Some issues we've had with the product never have been resolved, but for the most part, the software functions as it should for us to run our business.

Customer Support

Response times from customer support were better several years ago than what I feel I am experiencing these days.

Likes Best

It provides a set of comprehensive software functionality to support production and financials for our business. The support team resolves any issues we encounter with the software.

Likes Least

Software installations could be improved to make upgrades more bulletproof. It seems we consistently need assistance to resolve upgrade issues.

Recommendations

Make a list of your business requirements and software expectations to provide to the vendor. Get beyond the "Salesmanship" demos and actually exercise the product to validate what the vendor says it can do.

Argo Tool JobBoss Review

Ease-of-use

Exact offers very easy to follow tutorials and support, along with other options for instruction. From a user's standpoint, it is very user friendly.

Functionality

Over the years, the functionality has improved with our needs, and Exact has always made every effort to bring product changes that continue to meet our needs.

Product Quality

Great quality. It has fully functional modules, and it is customizable with several reports that have the ability to customize your own reports.

Customer Support

They are very knowledgeable, friendly, and willing to help with any issue.

Likes Best

Simple yet effective software that has evolved over the years to be a very valuable tool in our industry.

Likes Least

I cannot think of anything negative about Exact and the JobBOSS product I use.

Recommendations

Exact software is customizable, which gives you the opportunity to set up your software to meet the demands of your business. Over the years, we have expanded the software to meet our company growth and needs.

Wealth of information

Ease-of-use

It's quite intuitive, actually. I like the table formats of the various job entry pages.

Functionality

Reports are good, but all users should be able to make up their own reports. Also, it should be obvious to people that they are better off sending data to Excel, but people still like to see reports.

Product Quality

I've worked with Oracle, JD Edwards, and Baan, and this is as good as any of those for what is included. Well done.

Customer Support

I don't have enough experience with the customer service, but secondhand information says the support is good.

Likes Best

The amount of information one can retrieve is outstanding. Creating reports is fun with this tool.

Likes Least

An interface that could be used on handheld devices seem to be lacking.

Recommendations

Let go of "your" way of doing business and explore what is already included in JobBOSS. You can probably do better using these methods.

Good software that has helped modernize our shop

Ease-of-use

I don't think it's overly difficult to learn, but it takes some time to become "fluent" using it.

Functionality

As a scheduler, it has really helped us improve our shop flow. While the interface for ShopBOSS is not perfect, it gets the job done.

Product Quality

Some flaws, such as the inability to delete anything if it has already been used, drag it down a little bit. But overall, it is very solid.

Customer Support

Very quick responses, but it's hard for them to help without knowing exactly what your shop needs.

Likes Best

It's just a huge technological leap forward from where our shop was 10 years ago. It's a modern software system that has helped us organize and run our shop. Also, it was a big part of us qualifying for ISO 9001.

Likes Least

As a scheduler, I think that there is a lot of improvement possible with ShopBOSS. It is a little clunky, and it is a hassle to reschedule jobs exactly where you want them.

Recommendations

Of course, you should look around and discover what is best for your business, but I think JobBOSS excels in job routings and inventory control.

JobBOSS Review

Ease-of-use

Starting out is difficult only because of the sheer volume of information that needs to be found and input into the system to get it to function properly. After that, things are better, and it's easier to use.

Functionality

Some things don't make sense to us. I feel that we are advanced enough now on certain things and usually have to contact support for explanations on why one thing or another is happening to find out if we are screwing it up or if its a bug in our system/version, etc. This is happening more frequently now that we kind of know what we're doing.

Product Quality

I think this is a good product, and it's updated regularly.

Customer Support

Most of the support we need now is specific and cannot be answered by directing us to a similar case via the portal. This is, however, the default situation with most of the support people, so we have to go back multiple times to get the answer we need.

Likes Best

It's easy to learn and semi-easy to navigate through.

Likes Least

Some things are not as intuitive as I had expected.

Recommendations

That would be dependent on what it's needed for, etc.

JobBOSS ERP Review

Ease-of-use

JobBOSS is easy to set up and fairly easy to train on. The input screen makes it easy to train new employees and add structure to the process.

Functionality

Our company is growing, and we are leaning on JobBOSS to help us grow. The score would be higher if we had better accounting integration.

Product Quality

Good quality with thoughtful design concepts from the development team.

Customer Support

We use a lot of software, and the JobBOSS Support Team is one of the best.

Likes Best

The product is easy to use, and the JobBOSS Staff is easy to work with.

Likes Least

I would like to see more development in terms of ease of use and tighter functionality. I would also liked to see better integration between Accounting and Jobs, as well as and between Quotes and Jobs.

Recommendations

There are many things to consider when evaluating software, starting with the development of key functional requirements needed to meet your business objectives. Things like cost, vendor technical support capabilities, user groups, available training, implementation cost, and time frames are all important to consider.

Used it for three years now

Ease-of-use

Accomplishing simple tasks requires a high number of clicks.

Functionality

We have had custom software written to be able to use JobBOSS. The fact that no screens or pages are modifiable makes the product very limiting. All businesses do not operate the same.

Product Quality

We just changed to 11.6 and had to immediately run a hotfix to fix bugs.

Customer Support

Customer support is very good and usually very helpful.

Likes Best

I like the ease of copying quotes to quotes and jobs.

Likes Least

You have to do a pack list to close job. Also, there is no cancel or scrap status for a job.

Recommendations

Be prepared to change your method of oepration to work within JobBOSS.

Been using JobBOSS for 6.5 years: useful product, terrific support

Ease-of-use

Modules are intuitive, and terminology is consistent across the industry.

Functionality

JB software is utilized across all departments (front office/paperwork, QC, shop, shipping/receiving).

Product Quality

On the rare occasion there is an issue, it is resolved by JB support before it becomes an actual problem.

Customer Support

Always a good attitude. The number of employees at JB with experience and tenure tell you why the group is such a good one.

Likes Best

The support/technicians behind the product are terrific. On the rare occasion there is a problem, their team is quick to resolve the issue and take steps to make sure others aren't experiencing the same problem. 100% of the people I've dealt with at JB in the 6.5 years I've used it have always been terrific. They are people who care about what they do, and that's a rarity.

Likes Least

Just the occasional nuance to software capabilities vs. our procedures at our shop. Nothing extreme.

Recommendations

Take advantage of demos that JB can offer you, so you can see in "real life" how the software is used.

IT support for the client and server components of JobBOSS

Ease-of-use

Everything is broken out in proper buckets and not buried behind counter-intuitive menus. Switching between functions is easy and the built-in reporting capabilities are more than enough for most users.

Functionality

The manufacturing portion of the program is not "married to" the accounting functions. This alone would be a deal breaker for us were it not for the fact that we inherited it. On the plus side, the shop floor data collection and manufacturing portions are stronger than what you might see in products that cost even twice as much.

Product Quality

It's some mix of ASP/Delphi/Crystal all piled on top of a database that has almost no discipline built into it. Crashes and data corruption are much more common than they need to be.

Customer Support

I had a specific issue where the technicians obviously didn't believe me, and they refused to replicate the issue on their end. The experience has left me bitter towards their support. On the other hand, they have no problem sharing in-depth technical information on their website in order to make up for their shallow support bench.

Likes Best

The product is inexpensive. I think that the client front end is user-friendly, and the packed in data collection components are robust. The simplicity of the product makes the maintenance costs lower and the data accessibility (outside of the client) higher. Their online knowledge base, user forums, and simple training videos provide a great deal of information on the product and how to use and maintain it.

Likes Least

The product appears to have severe legacy issues in terms of database design, which leads to what should should be unnecessary calls to support in order to clear up "dirty data" issues.

The web support and phone support calls are fielded by different groups of technicians, and the phone support group seems to have a thing for hours-long employee meetings that take down the support line. In the end, the support issues don't matter too much since the answer is usually something along the lines of "that's interesting", or "yeah, we know about that".

More aggravating though, the application has a habit of crashing for reasons unknown (though somewhat less-so than older versions).

I'm not directly familiar with the inner workings of it, but I've been told on more than one occasion that the accounting portions are quite lacking.

Recommendations

There's a lot of 'bang for the buck' in this little package, and I've heard mostly good things about the manufacturing parts of the application. You could do far worse when looking at entry level ERP packages; however, if you need more robust accounting capabilities or have a low tolerance for technical snafus then you may need to look elsewhere.

We have used JobBOSS in our Mixmode Jobshop for 5 years.

Ease-of-use

This software is fairly easy to learn, especially with the online videos. The initial setup takes a lot of time customizing it to your operation and is hard to change once you have implemented a system of codes or numbering.

Functionality

This product would be very functional for us if the glitches I mention in "Likes Least" were fixed and the ShopBoss was redesigned for easier functionality.

Product Quality

Again, this product would be first-rate if not for the glitches I mention in "Likes Least" and the ShopBoss module was redesigned for easier functionality.

Customer Support

Very fast help, very friendly knowledgeable employees.

Likes Best

The biggest advantage that we see in JobBOSS is that it is well-suited to the small manufacturer and job shop. The modules are functional for our day-to-day operations, which allowed us to standardize and increase our workload and throughput by at least 20%. The interface is user-friendly. We were able to implement the software very quickly compared to the software we were using. The workstations in the shop have given us a good handle on time collection. We also use the QuickBooks integration and it works flawlessly.

Exact employees are very friendly and knowledgeable about their product. We get answers to our questions very quickly, and they are very helpful in solving problems we incur. The online portal is a huge asset for training new users and enhancements to the software’s customization.

Likes Least

As good as the program is, there is room for improvement. We think it is just a few enhancements away from greatness. The software has several glitches that have not been fixed in the five years we have been using it. For example, you lose the information you are entering into a job or purchase order if another user is updating a related job or material. Sometimes, the software locks up and has to be forced to close and restart. This usually happens when you are trying to delete a raw material in a Job and select a different material; it's some kind of access violation. The updates of information changes between modules is slow and can be frustrating. For example, if a raw material is received from a PO and you want to add that material to a job and pick it from the inventory, you have to close the jobs module and reopen it to get the new inventory update; this should occur instantly. A few other enhancements would be nice (e.g.: autofill on names fields, uses of Return key to tab between fields, and a simpler method of customizing basic forms like can be done in QuickBooks).

We purchased the ShopBoss scheduling module with high hopes of solving our delinquent deliveries. After about two years of trying to implement this module, we abandoned it for our old manual method. The JobShop module needs a simpler and more flexible scheduling module. it requires way too much time in operator maintenance to keep it functional. In a job shop environment the schedule has to stay on the balls of its feet because the priorities are always changing. We can do the job faster than we can change the schedule in JobBoss.

Recommendations

Ask for a short list of users that match your type of business and have implemented the software in the last 3 to 5 years. Give them a call and ask them for the good and the bad. Most will be willing to give you the unmotivated truth.

Great versatile software

Ease-of-use

It's very intuitive. I was trained in very little time and was able to learn a lot on my own. Also, they have a great support team for questions and training!

Functionality

It runs our entire organization. Reports are great for the most part, and it is easy to export data.

Product Quality

It runs well. It doesn't crash often. Modules link together well. Exporting data is easy.

Customer Support

Great support via phone or email. Training is good. They respond promptly to any contact with them.

Likes Best

Drilldown to detail in most areas is excellent! Lots of data is available.

Likes Least

No backflush on job materials. Job costing reports are confusing, and there is no good way to review closed jobs on a weekly basis without sifting through a lot of stuff!

Good management software

Ease-of-use

Once you get the standard stuff down through repetition, it comes quickly. Certain things take time and are almost better if you have separate staff using the separate modules completely instead of one person handling most of them but not fully utilizing everything because its quicker to skip a function.

Functionality

It really makes sense to use all the modules on most jobs, but with small jobs, sometimes you spend more time on JobBOSS than you do on the job.

Product Quality

It has a nice presentation and great tracking. Things work together well.

Customer Support

They are always coming out with updates and hotfixes. Salespeople always reply promptly.

Likes Best

I like the professional presentation. Another great thing is the history and documentation tracking. I really appreciate attaching prints to jobs, and the viewer that comes with this product works great with most files.

Likes Least

What I like least is ShopBoss' layout and functionality. It may just be our small business and how we have things set up, but it has not made sense for us to use it.

Recommendations

Putting JobBOSS to work.

Ease-of-use

It takes lots of mouse clicks and lots of tabbing to go anywhere. Getting around the different modules and reports become second nature fairly quick.

Functionality

It is difficult to schedule multilevel jobs with multiple deliveries. You end up doing it in a way you know is stupid, but it is the only way to get it done.

Product Quality

Having different modules, like ShopBoss, programmed in a different language than the others makes it laggy. And the infamous "this record has been updated by another user" is an annoyance.

Customer Support

It sometimes takes three days of phone tag to get the right person. Once you do, they are competent and helpful.

Likes Best

I liked the online training videos that covered many topics and built your knowledge of the system in progressive way. The Customer Conference 2013 was a great learning and connecting experience. At one time, I had five JobBOSS people helping me.

Likes Least

It is strange that they won't send a salesman out to do an onsite demo unless the customer pays for it.

Recommendations

Make sure you really know what you want and need. Deciding which modules to purchase is a challenge, but remember you can always activate them later. Use the parts you have correctly, and fully. Get buy in from everyone or you will end up with bad data.
