Exact JobBOSS Software

Exact JobBOSS is one of the most popular quoting, planning, and manufacturing execution systems in the market today. It is most often adopted by small to mid-sized job shops using Quickbooks, Excel, and/or paper folders looking to streamline operations, improve visibility, and grow revenue.

The software offers complete functionality for sales quoting, order and job creation, job scheduling (both infinite and finite capacity), material requirements planning (MRP), and manufacturing execution (MES) / shop floor control. In JobBOSS reviews, users often praise the system for its ease of use in setting up and creating job quotes.

We find that one key selling point for many JobBOSS users is the fact that it can integrate seamlessly with Quickbooks, or be sold with its own JobBOSS accounting module. The other major selling point is the JobBOSS pricing. Many companies can get into the JobBOSS system for as little as a few thousand dollars, leading Exact JobBOSS to become a very popular option for firms trying to avoid a large investment. JobBOSS ERP software can be deployed on-premise.

Exact was founded in 1984 by young entrepreneurs working out of their garage. Over time, Exact has retained its commitment to software for SMBs and has hence become one of the bigger names in ERP software. Exact is headquartered in the Netherlands while the JobBOSS offices are located in the United States

Due to its popularity--and high ratings in JobBOSS reviews from customers--we very often recommend this software to small and medium sized companies looking for a very affordable system as well as larger companies in need of a robust ERP solution.

Pretty easy to learn. Support staff are nice and helpful and they always walk me through anything I've mucked up. The program is easy to use, it's not real complicated, more user friendly then some packages out there.

Likes Least

Limited functionality. I came from an Oracle (manufacturing) background and I find getting the information I need out of JobBoss is very frustrating. I wasn't expecting anything close to what I had before but some items seem like they should just be common sense. You cannot run a backlog with rev's for the parts, unless you pay extra. I do accounting as well as customer support and I find it very difficult to pull the information I need in one report so I have to cut and paste. Plus exporting in to Excel the formatting is not great. I have to reformat everything. Lastly, to had an extra person to the users (extra license/seat) is crazy expensive. Almost twice the amount of the maintenance agreement. And if you upgrade, they do everything remotely so you have to do all the stuff on your end - and of course everything you want or need as a cost. On the plus side, the program is pretty easy to learn and navigate. The customer support staff are pleasant and for a small company - I guess the value is okay. It was already here when I came so I don't have much to compare it to. I do know we are not using the functionality the way we should and I wish I could find a consultant locally that could just come sit with me for a couple of hours. Trying to do stuff over the phone or email is time consuming and inefficient and I don't want to pay the cost of flying someone here only to be told I have to pay extra for everything.

Decide what functionality you are going to need/want. What do you like about your current software and what are you hoping to gain. Then make sure this is a good fit for your organization

After setting up the program (inputting work centers, operations, employees, shifts, etc.), it is very simple and straightforward to use. The on-demand training videos were very well put together.

Likes Least

There are small nit-picky details that are annoying until they become second nature. For example, just about every module in the program makes you enter an input and won't activate the rest of the screen until you press tab, not enter like most every other program. For some more complicated functions, (we wanted to use the program as a record of material properties of samples we test in our lab and put together our own reports separate from the pre-loaded ones) you almost had to pay an extra fee for a customer service representative to talk you through the process. There was documentation on their website, but it was very hard to find and implement.

Recommendations

I would advise someone to take full advantage of the training videos available on Exact's website, and if you are not a typical job shop, think carefully about how you want to use and implement the program into your current setup.

There's nothing to like about this software. I cannot run reports and cannot get help from the company for simple questions unless I want to be charged two hours of time for a five-minute question.

Likes Least

It's very difficult to input data without constantly using the mouse and/or key stokes. If Exact wanted to have happy customers, they would answer questions. My feeling is they would provide free telephone support. They probably realize they would be flooded with calls they could not handle.

Recommendations

Move on to a different package.

It is a low cost alternative for small shops. Provided you have the proper training and are able to enter information correctly, it does provide a good deal of information about job costing, efficiency ratings, etc.

Likes Least

Much of the functionality is not intuitive, the platform is less than stable, and it allows users to delete/change items after posting, which completely corrupts any kind of audit trail.

Recommendations

This software is good for small shops without a huge volume. I would also say that the classes (while very expensive) are going to be a requirement if you want to use the full functionality of the software.

There's nothing I like least about the vendor. I wish the software was a little more on the retail side, but that is more our niche in the business.

Recommendations

We have looked at other software applications over the years, and no one knows the job shop business like JobBOSS does. I've seen a lot of shops buy elsewhere and then buy Jobboss. So look, but spend your money wisely.

Reports could be more sophisticated. Data Collection is not user-friendly and definitely doesn't deliver the promised level of flexibility.

I can't say anything negative about Exact as a vendor. They've treated us very good.

Recommendations

I think the best strategy on picking software like this is to actually go and spend a day with someone who is already using it. Watch them work in it, go through every module to see what they think about it, and see how it would work for your business.

It's just a huge technological leap forward from where our shop was 10 years ago. It's a modern software system that has helped us organize and run our shop. Also, it was a big part of us qualifying for ISO 9001.

As a scheduler, I think that there is a lot of improvement possible with ShopBOSS. It is a little clunky, and it is a hassle to reschedule jobs exactly where you want them.

There are many things to consider when evaluating software, starting with the development of key functional requirements needed to meet your business objectives. Things like cost, vendor technical support capabilities, user groups, available training, implementation cost, and time frames are all important to consider.

The support/technicians behind the product are terrific. On the rare occasion there is a problem, their team is quick to resolve the issue and take steps to make sure others aren't experiencing the same problem. 100% of the people I've dealt with at JB in the 6.5 years I've used it have always been terrific. They are people who care about what they do, and that's a rarity.

The product is inexpensive. I think that the client front end is user-friendly, and the packed in data collection components are robust. The simplicity of the product makes the maintenance costs lower and the data accessibility (outside of the client) higher. Their online knowledge base, user forums, and simple training videos provide a great deal of information on the product and how to use and maintain it.

Likes Least

The product appears to have severe legacy issues in terms of database design, which leads to what should should be unnecessary calls to support in order to clear up "dirty data" issues.

The web support and phone support calls are fielded by different groups of technicians, and the phone support group seems to have a thing for hours-long employee meetings that take down the support line. In the end, the support issues don't matter too much since the answer is usually something along the lines of "that's interesting", or "yeah, we know about that".

More aggravating though, the application has a habit of crashing for reasons unknown (though somewhat less-so than older versions).

I'm not directly familiar with the inner workings of it, but I've been told on more than one occasion that the accounting portions are quite lacking.

Recommendations

There's a lot of 'bang for the buck' in this little package, and I've heard mostly good things about the manufacturing parts of the application. You could do far worse when looking at entry level ERP packages; however, if you need more robust accounting capabilities or have a low tolerance for technical snafus then you may need to look elsewhere.

The biggest advantage that we see in JobBOSS is that it is well-suited to the small manufacturer and job shop. The modules are functional for our day-to-day operations, which allowed us to standardize and increase our workload and throughput by at least 20%. The interface is user-friendly. We were able to implement the software very quickly compared to the software we were using. The workstations in the shop have given us a good handle on time collection. We also use the QuickBooks integration and it works flawlessly.

Exact employees are very friendly and knowledgeable about their product. We get answers to our questions very quickly, and they are very helpful in solving problems we incur. The online portal is a huge asset for training new users and enhancements to the software’s customization.

Likes Least

As good as the program is, there is room for improvement. We think it is just a few enhancements away from greatness. The software has several glitches that have not been fixed in the five years we have been using it. For example, you lose the information you are entering into a job or purchase order if another user is updating a related job or material. Sometimes, the software locks up and has to be forced to close and restart. This usually happens when you are trying to delete a raw material in a Job and select a different material; it's some kind of access violation. The updates of information changes between modules is slow and can be frustrating. For example, if a raw material is received from a PO and you want to add that material to a job and pick it from the inventory, you have to close the jobs module and reopen it to get the new inventory update; this should occur instantly. A few other enhancements would be nice (e.g.: autofill on names fields, uses of Return key to tab between fields, and a simpler method of customizing basic forms like can be done in QuickBooks).

We purchased the ShopBoss scheduling module with high hopes of solving our delinquent deliveries. After about two years of trying to implement this module, we abandoned it for our old manual method. The JobShop module needs a simpler and more flexible scheduling module. it requires way too much time in operator maintenance to keep it functional. In a job shop environment the schedule has to stay on the balls of its feet because the priorities are always changing. We can do the job faster than we can change the schedule in JobBoss.

Recommendations

Ask for a short list of users that match your type of business and have implemented the software in the last 3 to 5 years. Give them a call and ask them for the good and the bad. Most will be willing to give you the unmotivated truth.
