Oracle Aconex is a cloud-based operation management solution for managing information and processes between companies on complex construction and engineering projects. Several functions include document management, workflow automation, bid management, issue management, handover management and control of project correspondence. Aconex also offers BIM file management and process control, field inspections and issues management and the creation and management of digital operations and maintenance manuals.

As a cloud-based solution, Aconex allows project members worldwide to create and review documents and other project information from any location. This includes RFIs, drawings, 3D models, contracts, reports and more. A real-time dashboard allows users to set their KPIs and monitor essential activities from a single screen. It also supports third party integrations which allow users to sync data within applications simultaneously.

Aconex supports construction and engineering projects across multiple industry segments but is primarily designed for asset owners, developers, architects, engineers, general contractors, government contractors, heavy/highway construction firms and mining, power, and oil and gas companies.

A great cloud-based management solution for construction

Pros

Great UI and UX and flexibility when it comes to choose plans (licence per users or unlimited). Great collaboration tools and flexibility between the members working on projects.

Cons

The support is'nt allways too reactive at your problems. (Maybe they are too busy and crowded sometimes).

Pros

The consistent way that each project is set up, makes for a good user experience generally.

Cons

Some PMs don’t use the tools properly. It is becoming impossible to work out what your actual tasks really are. RFIs get sent to everyone on the project team. Queries are more like statements, it takes longer to work out what the question really is, than it does to work out the answer. People should think about who they are sending queries “to” and who is just cc’d. Using the please respond by options should mean there is an extra onus on the initiator to close it out, or chase it up.

Keeping up with standards

Overall love the best practices for ISO updates. Makes me feel confident I am keeping things up to standard.

Pros

ACONEX has helped a lot for the project in which I currently work.
Aconex complies and stays up-to-date with ISO 30300.

Cons

Still tough to keep up with certain documents. I find organization is pretty crucial to having ACONEX work well for you.

Excellent Document Management System

I use it daily to upload documents that are transmitted to the Client and Vendor. It will also be used for auditing purposes, reporting and permanent document storage.

Pros

That most Clients and Vendors/Customers are beginning to see the value of this software and will use it making it an easy way to transmit and receive documents.

Another great thing about this software is I can log in from anywhere, not just my workplace.

Cons

I am not sure there is anything I don't like about this software. I guess if the system is down is what I may like least but it is usually back up and running in a short amount of time.

The industry standard when it comes to project management and CPS

Aconex streamlines the whole constuction process, from providing input to answering RFIs with various stakeholder engagement. It does it all and is a must have.

Pros

This has virtually everything you could think of/ need. As the project is constantly evolving, Aconex keeps track and simplifies the process of reviews, approvals, management, timelines etc. With multiple disciplinarys proving input in one place, the whole process is fast tracked.

Cons

The software can be pricey depending on the level of functionality required, however considering the costs associated with variations etc arrising from poor coordination/ poor work flows its a no brainer.

Useful product but requires a lot of training to become familiar

Pros

Superseding of documents as new ones are issued is a very useful feature, communication between different teams being all in one place reduces a lot of confusion, having all project documents accessible from a single source is extremely useful throughout the project as a PM>

Cons

Not very intuitive to use, requires extensive training sessions to be able to use it proficiently, document control heavily reliant on all contributors following the naming convention.

Pros

easy of finding information for any document or workflow I look for, zip download is easy too to download all files together.

Cons

- The relation between documents and workflows is not practical, you should copy the link or text from documents and go to workflows to find information, there should be a way to do that automatically.
- If I'm not in the workflow and want to download documents, there is no way except going to the original mail.

We only use it as a subcontractor.

Pros

Very easy to track conversations and contract instructions. The search function is easy to use and brings up all relevant info. The document register is very easy to use as well.

Cons

The software itself is good. I do find that main contractors tent to send out contract instructions to all subbies even when it doesn't affect some.

- The email threads and emailing process can get very lengthy and confusing

Pros

I like that im able to communicate and send large files to our subs through the program. I can easily track the open and closed RFP's for future references.

Cons

It's a little overwhelming and hard to navigate unless you have some training on the software. If your not familiar with it, it can be frustrating, but none the less it is very useful for multipurpose business needs.

Really easy to use, minimum training required and user-friendly.

Reduce document controller, reducing email communication with large files as well. Centralization for all document control management.

Pros

Aconex is used by all entities involved for our project. This make document control management efficient and productive.

The best thing about Aconex is the document register : unlimited size of files, easy access to previous version of a file, link to all transmittal used to exchange the file and, the search is powerful. Easy and fast to update files for all document register that have already received a file.

Cons

Having to ask for a report of our distribution list, we should have this accessibility. The Insights should be editable by the project Management to represent what we should see.
