About DataCAD

DataCAD is a computer-aided design and drafting tool that assists architects, engineers and construction professionals with Building Information Modeling. Its features are drafting, designing, 3D modeling and document preparation. Architects can use DataCAD for production drawing through photorealistic rendering and associative dimensioning. It helps contractors visualize door and window insertion on construction sites. The solution's three-dimensional models can be used to generate plans and modify elevations. Further, it assists with specialized building practices like log construction and pre-manufactured homes. DataCAD integrates with the 3D modeling tool SketchUp for model development and production drawing. It collects and stores data from each design, and pr...

The best CAD software out there

PROS

I've been using DataCAD since version 8. It's the best, most intuitive program out there. Easy to learn and you can jump right in without needed pricey training classes. Customizable keyboard shortcuts are BOMB.

CONS

We still can't print multiple collated sets. It's not the worst thing in the world, but it's not great.

DataCAD lags behind the other boys in the industry, but could be a good option for a smaller firm.

Our office uses DataCAD for architecture construction documents and it does that task well, but clients are no longer just happy with "CAD" drawings and want more 3-d visualizations.

PROS

Easy to use. The simplicity of the software allows for someone to learn it fast.

CONS

The simplicity is what you get with this software. It doesn't have the features that other softwares such as BIM have that are becoming more mainstream in the architecture and engineering industries.

Great for smaller projects

It was ok for smaller projects, but time consuming for larger projects that required renderings because we would have to build it in a separate program for rendering.

PROS

Being able to organize what I draw through different colored line weights and layers

CONS

It's 3D capabilities do not compare with others.

Reasons for switching to DataCAD

DataCad was what the company I worked for at the time used. We later made the switch to ArchiCad for its coordination and 3D capabilities.

Great Alternative for AutoCAD

DataCAD is by far the fastest software for creating 2D construction documents which is most important to most of us. Yes their 3D portion is falling behind but I never use it since we have Sketchup for that.

Horrible 3d

Best for 2d cad and very easy to learn. At one time a fast moving program but in the 3D world, last place.
