I’ve been using it for five years now, and even when I first started, it never felt overwhelming especially compared to other platforms I’ve worked with. No incentive was offered The build on my web site took a while, as I was passed from rep to rep and not all of the information that the previous rep had put in place existed, so had to reinvent the wheel. The software is definitely not intuitive--you do have to read or listen to instructions in order to accomplish things within the site. Finding answers to "how to" questions is also not intuitive or easy...unless you work on it every day or have someone that just works the web site, it is difficult. The invoicing system is easy to understand. #### Cons StarChapter is rigid and barely operational when utilizing the corporate member manager, which was one of the main reasons we selected it. You can label/group members with unique tags, but none of them can be exported from the Member list. Instead, you have to pull the entire list of groups/labels and sort through the data, making the function a giant time sink. The email system has two options for deployment: send now or schedule later. However, you can only select the date to schedule. StarChapter will deploy the email at some unknown time, usually at odd hours in the morning. Most of my clients prefer using a third party for emailing for this reason, as well as the anachronistic email building tools. Scheduling recurring emails is unfriendly and just not worth it. Not to mention, the media gallery is broken more often than it is operable. My staff has found a workaround to link images in emails and webpages, but the site just hangs when trying to upload images. When this happens, you're forced to reload the page, which takes you out of whatever you were editing, only to not save any of what you've done. If this occurs while you're editing a webpage, you may also be locked out of the page for 5 minutes from a security feature. Hitting the back button on the browser while utilizing any parts of the dashboard is the kiss of death. I've never seen anything like it until using StarChapter. Utility has never been a priority for StarChapter, which is evidenced by their development of new design templates for websites that were only offered to get clients out of an old pricing structure. Lastly and I wish I could bold and underline this. StarChapter cannot process international payments in its dashboard or on its user-facing side. Any associations with international members, do not use this product unless you want to spend extra time using the virtual terminal or a third-party merchant. #### Reasons for choosing StarChapter Cost and the onboarding team were very engaging. #### Reasons for switching to StarChapter Cost, and at the time, Wild Apricot did not link members with event engagement. #### Vendor response Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. It also is a good tool for managing your member database. The staff is great about responding within 24 hours to inquiries. The StarPay system, while I initially was not happy to be forced to join, has actually worked well and is efficient. #### Cons It's a bit clunky, and updates would really, particularly when trying to update content on your association's website. The site doesn't easily account for comp memberships (comped meeting registrants get a confirmation that they've paid $X for a meeting, when they haven't. Their help desk can only be contacted electronically; they used to accept phone calls, but no longer do. StarChapter is based on WordPress, which makes for easier learning for users already familiar with WordPress. Event management is a plus. There's an extensive knowledgebase for help and StarChapter support department is very responsive. #### Cons 1. The system is so feature rich that there is a substantial learning curve to master the full capabilities. 2. Although webpage editing is based on WordPress' block editor, the content editing and navigation editing is a bit clunky. Fortunately, there is a source code (HTML) option, but StarChapter inserts additional tags based on its CSS. 3. The elimination of 3rd party payment processors in favor of its proprietary (and extra cost) StarPay system means we have to use payment links to the processor instead of keeping everything within StarChapter. #### Reasons for switching to StarChapter We had started with a custom programmed website and the migrated to Concrete CMS to have a website that wasn't reliant on a particular programmer, so multiple people could make content changes. However, the website was separate from mass email system (Constant Contact) and membership management (mySQL database). Can't do EVERYTHING, but you depending on what's valuable, you can make excellent use of the tools included. All in one spot. Having a student member component was not something we've solved long term. We'd love to have a student member category so students can sign up at a student rate, and right now we can't do that. The website updates do not need to be handled by a web designer and can easily be learned anyone. #### Cons There are a few features that could use improvement such as there are too many clicks needed when registering for an event, there is no way to add virtual login information to a calendar invite that can be saved after you register, and it would be great to have a message system that links cell phone numbers to opt in to receive text messages. #### Reasons for choosing StarChapter ALA Gateway switched to StarChapter around 10 years ago and couldn't be happier. This has really brought our organization to a one-stop shop. We had files everywhere, and when people would drop off the board, sometimes we lost information. It allows one program that can be easily transferred to the new board each year. No need to have separate files. #### Cons Some of the areas for managing the website are not easy to find, but once you have done it a few times, it starts to get easier. It would be nice to see what the regular member sees when adding items.It's hard to get everyone on the board together to train. Individual training is fine, but it is more beneficial together.It would be nice to have a calendar that members could pull up by month and see the upcoming events. And allow us to add events to the calendar that aren't specific to our chapter but interest our members. #### Reasons for choosing StarChapter The use, the ease of transition, a website that was turnkey, and costs. Moving to StarChapter has benefited us in many ways. Our association member management was based on spreadsheets so this is so much better. Our prior website was significantly outdated, so again, moving to StarChapter was a great improvement. We did lose functionality in that our prior financial system was Method (had limited member management) and did interface to Quickbooks. However, StarChapter's ability for on-line dues management resulted in a significant dollar collection in our first couple months of being live which was a very pleasant result. The website provides a "wow" factor. The Association management portion of the software has many tools for membership management, event management, dues management and email communications functions. All are very helpful. There are a number of on-line resources serving as a knowledge base and their support is wonderful. Most questions are answered within 24 hours. Members also really like the ability to pay dues or make donations or purchases on-line. #### Cons As a heritage culture society we had a few membership/group use case issues that the software couldn't really address and there wasn't much guidance on possible workarounds. We needed a few more project hours on our implementation phase (we were turned over to support before we went live). There needs to be a user manual document to further define screen fields as there is great flexibility in the system. While the videos are helpful, they don't provide enough detail for taking the system to beyond a basic level. The other key limitation is the lack of interfacing to financial systems like QuickBooks. While we really like the ability for members to pay dues or buy from store via credit-card, there is double entry for bookkeeping due to lack of interface. #### Reasons for choosing StarChapter Our society's prior webmaster provided the name StarChapter as a product to review, investigate and potentially install. We also looked at the PC World magazine (2017or 2018) comparative review of association management software. I think starchapter is mostly userfriendly and organized in an intuititve way, on a high level. Doing certain basic tasks seem to have far too many steps, though. Like adding a single member requires going though 7-8 different screens. #### Ratings breakdown - Ease of use: 2/5 - Value for money: 4/5 - Customer support: 4/5 - Functionality: 3/5 #### Pros we can manage events, communication, member database and website all from one platform #### Cons the communications tools are limited and the membership functions don't allow for much flexibility with memberships that have multiple people listed. The system forces you to enter a per person dues rate. So a 3 person membership that costs $100 actually costs $33.33 in their system, which when multiplied by three doesn't result in a round number.
