Integral to my private practice

Overall, I've been very pleased with nearly all aspects of working with Alma, feel proud to be a part of the community, and believe in the mission of the company as well as benefit personally from paying for their service.

PROS

I felt confident to leave my CMH agency job and start private practice because of the suite of services Alma offers.

CONS

As the company rapidly expands they have struggled to keep up with the increased demand for customer service. However, it seems that this and other common complaints are being addressed and Alma as an organization are willing to listen to both clinician and client feedback.

Great for Sole Practitioners

I will stay with Alma, I think the site is sleek and highly functional, I can easily manage my clients using Alma, and I do not intent to leave. I do hope over time more features are added to make Alma a one stop shop for small business owners like me.

PROS

As a sole practitioner in private practice, I very much appreciate the support Alma provides in front office and in claims submission.

CONS

It would be great to have Blue Cross and Blue Shield as a participating insurance Carrier as a number of potential clients in the states I am licensed have this carrier and I think referrals would be more plentiful, and I think that contributes to the low number of referrals I get per month.

Reasons for switching to Alma

Valant would not assist me with credit card processing and onboarding was a nightmare.

Horrible experience

PROS

nothing it's just very very bad It's a total scam

CONS

I used Alma for my daughter. They promised it will be covered by insurance, I didn't have my insurance card so they charge me fully and gave me a superbill, to my surprise it is not covered by insurance The customer support is horrible, it takes them days to reply, they mostly ignore my emails and the worst, the therapist was unprofessional

Billing Ease

Overall, I'm satisfied with Alma as my insurance billing platform. It's the only one that I use.

PROS

The main feature I like about Alma is being able to have a 3rd party system bill insurance so I can focus on doing what I love best which is serving my clients. I like being paid every week and knowing how much I'm paid.

CONS

What I don't like is the low amount of clients that come in. I average about 1 client every 3 months. I didn't receive my tax information even though I did email support about it.

Reasons for switching to Alma

I wasn't receiving any referrals and my clients were struggling with the insurance.

A must-have for transitioning to private practice

PROS

Alma is an all-in-one platform for managing private practice. They help you get credentialed with insurance companies, publish your profile and match you with potential clients, provide a portal including assessments, treatment plans, case notes, etc., and even process billing for you. Additionally, they connect you to a robust network of therapists through community conversations, case conferencing, and other events to make private practice a community role. They also offer continuing education courses. For everything there is to gain using Alma, their monthly fee is completely reasonable.

CONS

As a clinician, I have no complaints. However, if a client were to search for a counselor through Alma, I would imagine there are so many options they may struggle to find the right fit.

ALMA has been a game-changer

It has been a wonderful experience with Alma as they have helped with many issues, worked on handling insurance and billing claims.

PROS

I loved that Alma was able to ease off the insurance process and worked on handling all the paperwork and eligibility claims. They really helped practitioners work on building their caseload.

CONS

Better EHR would be helpful. It would be nice to have prompts for treatment plans and progress notes.

I wouldn’t recommend it to anybody. People who come to this website are looking for support, and when a therapist doesn’t even show for a consultation that says a lot.

Will stick with it, but hope they continue to address issues.

I’m happy with it so far as it built a healthy caseload for me with insurance billing. However im not sure if I’ll stick with it beyond a year if they don’t address some of the issues.

PROS

The pricing is good. The onboarding was fast and I probably wouldn’t be accepting insurances without it, grew my practice much faster than I expected. I get a surprising number of consults and clients through Alma. The billing is smooth and flexible. It’s secure. And I like my profile.

CONS

The credit card processing issues with private pay and cancellations fees is getting annoying. I do hope they continue to help the Alma calendar interface with workspace and other platforms better. I would prefer to upload my own forms and have an assessment option, edit my profile directly without waiting for Alma to finalize it. The tech support is a bit slow but comparable to other platforms really.

Alma makes accepting insurance Easy even if new to private practice

Alma allows me to take insurance and streamline my process.

PROS

I love the enhanced provider rates and how Alma makes it easy and worthwhile to accept insurance from clients.

CONS

I would like the EHR to be fully functional and able to send fillable forms like Simple Practice.

Alma helped me feel confident when launching my private practice!

I love Alma! And I recommend it to every therapist I meet. It has made my fist year of private practice a breeze!

PROS

I love the ease of billing insurance, getting referrals through Alma (about 50% of my referrals came from Alma the other 50% came from PsychToday), and getting paid weekly. I also like the community aspect, the presentations they offer and encouraging growth and community.

CONS

Sometimes there is a delay in the insurance being "verified" both for new and existing clients (but most are immediate or within a couple of days). I have also had clients notify me that there were errors in their billing, and were charged when they shouldn't have. But after emailing support staff, they are able to clear it up and provide the refund. But it has happened multiple times, which makes it iffy for clients to enroll in autopay. I also don't like that the support staff only works Monday-Friday East coast hours (but I get it).

Administrative side of practice

I am a very satisfied member. My practice is thriving and Alma is responsible for the increased , referrals.

PROS

I find that Alma provides a vital service. I don'tknow how I did before Alma. I know that I was not able to expand my practice as I now have. Many of the administrative tasks have been made more efficient and user friendly. The scheduling and invoice generation, the insurance inquiry and approval are made to be easy to use.

CONS

I find it difficult to speak with anyone on the telephone. I find that this is not unique to Alma.

It can be better but it is decent

Overall, ALMA offers good value but lack in reliability and customer service with its providers and the clients.

PROS

The website is easy to use and to navigate. You don't need much training to use it. Submitting the claims is easy, and you get paid once a week. ALMA has a platform for the community (other providers) to share resources, information, referrals, etc. They started implementing an EHR system, which is pretty basic, but it does the job. You also get a Zoom link to use with your clients. The reimbursement rates are reasonable compared to other platforms, so this is the best selling point to convince us to pay the membership fee for ALMA for now.

CONS

Customer support is okay, and I think they can be more responsive to its members. The eligibility and insurance checks can be unreliable. They quote a copay/deductible to clients, and months later, the quoted amount changes significantly. If the clients do not pay, ALMA removes it from the therapists' payout. Many of the referrals/consultation requests received from ALMA's website are unresponsive "spammish," you have to have Psychology Today to get clients since ALMA's directory is not very productive. They do not take many Blue Cross plans, Healthnet, medicare, or Medicaid.

Worth the investment

I’ve had a great experience! I was originally going to be a cash pay practice only due to the difficulty of working with insurance companies & getting low rates & not being paid in a timely manner. Alma gave me the ability to grow my practice just starting out. I would love if Alma offered a group practice feature (preferably at no additional charge). If that were an option, I wouldn’t also use the other platforms.

PROS

Giving my the ability to be pod in a timely manner, allowing me to reach more clientele & be more accessible to the community, ease of submitting claims and using the platform.

CONS

It’s not set up for a group practice, so to use it for such I would have to pay for an additional profile for other clinicians, while another similar platform is free and allows for group practice.

lack of transparency

PROS

Nothing. Regular services. Therapist are on time, but that doesn’t depend on Alma anyway.

CONS

Had I known I'd be accountable for the full fees, I wouldn’t have taken the services.I asked if there was any fee, I received a response from Alma where clearly said that there would be no co-pay so, I don't know how communications work between them and the insurances companies, but the fact is that Alma was the ones who gave me the wrong information and made me believe that I wouldn't have to pay.Also, I'm getting invoices in September when my last appointment was in May. That's four months late. Why didn't Alma give a notice that actually there was a copay?I'm disappointed by the lack of transparency about the information that I got from Alma and the fees I was charged, and then the delay in charging them.

Effective way to start growing a private pratice

Alma has been wonderful from day one. It was easy to onboard and they were very communicative about the process. Their platform is easy to use and navigate. I love how they provide us with information about individuals insurance information.

PROS

Alma's customer services is amazing. I can email a request and I will get an answer typically within 1 business day. They make adding clients to the portal easy and I've gained several referrals from them since I started.

CONS

I wish they were credentialed with BCBS!

Easy billing with good reimbursement rates

CONS

I was told when I signed up that I would get a minimum of 3 referrals a month. I signed up in March and have had 2. Only 1 turned into anything. Also, insurance reimbursement rates are great, but if THEY make a mistake confirming benefits, they take the money back from you. They can do this as they have your banking information for your direct deposit. Unfortunately I signed up for the annual plan, so I have MANY months left of this before I can cancel.

99 tasks but billing isn't one!

My practice has been growing at a consistent rate. Alma took away several concerns such as credentialing, billing, and client referrals

PROS

Starting a private practice can be overwhelming. Having the support of Alma with billing is a major task to have checked off of your to do list. Billing several insurance companies is the best feature.

CONS

I would prefer to more form options for all ages.
