Highly recommended!

The business benefits include a significant decrease in time spent on administrative tasks and documentation leaving me more time for clients, myself, and reducing my overall stress level. Additional business benefits include increased confidence for accuracy in billing and being paid in a timely manner, also increased confidence that my clinical documentation will meet or exceed audit requirements. And as a clinician, it enhances my ability to provide more meaningful assessments to clients.

PROS

Valant is a clinically comprehensive and sound software that is intuitive to practitioners and user-friendly. It provides exceptional options to support top-notch clinical documentation, organize and track all functions in charts, scheduling, and billing, it includes customizable options for calendars, documents, notes, treatment plans, and so on. Using this software makes my record-keeping and all other administrative tasks easy, fast, accurate, and saves me valuable time and provides excellent security and peace of mind. Also, their customer support is the best I have ever encountered.

CONS

Integration with my previous business was quick and easy. I find all the features exceed my expectations. I did not find the webinars particularly helpful; although they were well-organized, for me they moved too fast through too much new information and I wasn't able to grasp or retain it well. The ability to grasp the user skills was greatly enhanced by the Knowledge Base provided and by patient and knowledgeable customer service personnel that could walk me through some processes and explain things and answer questions during the process.

Reason for choosing Valant EHR Suite

Valant had many more and higher quality options for both clinical and administrative tasks.

Reasons for switching to Valant EHR Suite

I went into business from a group practice to a solo practice, and I had found TheraNest, which the group practice used, to be unsatisfactory clinically and cumbersome and confusing to use.

Valant EHR Review

I am very glad that we decided to go with Valant.

PROS

Valant was the best choice for our behavioral health clinic. They continue to update and expand features that have improved the functioning of our system. It has saved time and worked well with our systems. Billing was a major improvement and linking to our Calander and notes was essential.

CONS

There are some features in the assessment and MTP that could be improved for our particular uses. Also billing is slightly complicated and could be simplified with some small adjustments. I do however appreciate the flexibility.

Reason for choosing Valant EHR Suite

There were other products not listed, however we met with each one extensively and found that Valant most closely met our needs at a price point that was affordable.

Expensive and outdated but with great customer support

n summary, high price, tired appearance and clunky performance. For a solo, cash only practice, I would suggest Simple Practice is a cheaper and comparable (often better) alternative. For prescribers - sign up for an independent e prescribing account, 600-800 per year depending on the platform. If you have a group practice and are looking to track insurance integration, this is probably Valant’s strength but if this is your primary aim, there are better alternatives on the market. Charging fees for services which are “Standard” on other platforms adds to the bloated cost. That being said, the customer service was excellent. My questions were answered by email and phone relatively quickly and I cannot thank them enough.

PROS

- Calendar - scheduling/billing/notes accessed all from one screen. - Integrated CC processing. Third party processor (Elavon) provides details statements for easy bookkeeping. -Easy to submit insurance claims (albeit only after a protracted setup process with Change Healthcare) - Insurance ERA integration (not perfect - for example UHC has many subsidiaries and it requires registering each once with Change Healthcare for the ERAs to appear in Valant. This is a hugely time consuming process and I never managed to get all my payers correctly registered.) - Reliable. Minimal downtime. Support is very accessible. - Pt statements are simple and clear and superbills have been consistently accepted by payors without any issue - Able to integrate multiple providers and multiple locations. Effective for tracking insurance reimbursement from multiple payers across multiple locations. This is Valet’s key strength.

CONS

- Looks and handles like Windows Vista. Clunky and outdated. Functions are often behind multiple drop-down menus and not always intuitively bundled together.. However, it functions well enough once learnt. - Significant learning curve, particularly in understanding the billing/accounting aspects. Educational videos are detailed but incredibly dry and time consuming to work through - Integrated CC processor is expensive! An additional $2-3 per visit billed quickly adds up and is a high price to pay for convenience. - No personalization of notes/documents beyond the provided templates, many of which are outdated and redundant. There is the option to add a blank tab and use a third party software like text expander to add in templates that way. - Esignitaure for documents is an additional fee. This quickly became prohibitively expensive. I returned to using third party options such as DocuSign and Adobe Sign, both of which were cheaper. Note that this function is free with Simple Practice which is over 60% cheaper! - Note writer is tabbed, awkward and clunky. Unable to scroll through the note as a whole. Option to add Macro is outdated. I used TextExpander as it was faster, despite additional expense - The patient portal is unreliable. I had patients complain about being redirected to a portal for another practice, for example. This raised other concerns about data security and HIPAA. - Note writing tool is difficult to customize and cumbersome to operate. Notes are difficult to customize and the available options are often outdated and include multiple redundant options. - Templates were clunky and awkward to customize. The tabbed interface is cumbersome and outdated. The templates are very click heavy with a lot of redundant information and the notes generated are often bloated which makes reviewing far more labor intensive and time consuming than it needs to be. The notes are generated only as pdf files which makes searching through past documents a painful process of downloading each note in turn or downloading the whole lot, every time you need to check the plan form the last visit or the labs from two visits ago… - “Integrated” prescribing is actually a link-out to Rcopia. Cannot navigate back and forth between prescribing window and pt notes. Be aware that a standalone DrFirst account costs approximately $650 per year and the standalone experience is identical. There is no benefit of using the software “through” Valant and it is inaccurate to describe it as “integrated”. It isn’t. - Mobile app is an HTML throwback that made me nostalgic for college. Limited functionality makes it practically unusable. -Notes are turned in to pdf files on signing which makes searching or quickly reading past notes very difficult. Open each pdf individually rather than scrolling through text in the window. - Very expensive. Double the cost of some competitors. $300 + per provider plus additional costs for Rcopia and additional costs for electronic document handling and costs for patient reminders. All becomes very expensive very quickly. Unless I were filing a significant number of insurance claims or managing insurance claims across multiple locations and providers, it is hard to justify the high price tag. Even so, there are cheaper alternatives. Simple Practice has comparable functionality and is a third of the price. Even accounting for a third party e prescribing service. Patient age - this sounds minor but grows to become a major annoyance. The patients’ age is only displayed on the patient record screen so when not writing or prescribing, it involves clicking through another couple of screens in a new tab. It doesn’t sound much but, believe me, these wasted seconds add up over time and grow to become a major annoyance.

Reviewing Valant from the Nurse

My overall experience with Valant has been very positive I believe. It has been fairly easy to navigate and find and access what I need to do my job. That said it has made my job a whole lot easier and less stressful than having to deal with , say Epic, which took me a good 2 months to learn to navigate . I feel I can do my job more efficiently when I can access what I need in less time.

PROS

Valant has been the easiest EHR for me to use in navigating as a nurse. It is easy to pend medications for Providers to sign off on, easy to put notes in a chart when patients call. I find most aspects very user friendly and enjoy sending PA's from the Dashboard also instead of going to Cover My Med's.

CONS

The thing I like least about Valant would be the difficulty in selection of Pharmacy's in Rcopia at times. That can be a real pain.

Reasons for switching to Valant EHR Suite

Because I changed jobs, went from working with a Pediatric Group to a Psychiatric group.

terrible customer service

SLOW EMAIL CUSTOMER SERVICE, Currently, I have an email support request, now going on TWO WEEKS WITH NO HUMAN RESPONSE. Only automated "we got your message, but we're swamped. If you no longer need a reply, let us know. Otherwise please be patient we'll get to you when we can" canned replies. This is TYPICAL of several past email requests. Calling is difficult due to time-zone differences, so email is by far more practical for my solo practice.

PROS

fair pricing. reliable scheduler, albeit a little cumbersome and old-skool. integrated schedule / billing was fairly easy to submit in batches. mostly, i just keep using it because it's what I originally set up for my practice. I have buyer's remorse all the time.

CONS

For several YEARS (literally), Valant used outdated web technology (Silverlight) that was incompatible with several web browsers and the latest MacOS. They actually encouraged users NOT to update web browsers and desktop OS because it would break compatibility. I've had to DOWNGRADE my firefox browser to an old, obsolete, unsecure version because that was the only way I could access Valant on my Mac. POOR QUICK CLINICAL NOTES MODULE: they TRY to make click-click-click notes sound like "natural language," but colleagues got annoyed and felt like I was faxing them boilerplate notes. Sure notes meet billing requirements, but don't naturally capture actual patient encounters with nuance, which is important in mental health. The notes are several pages long, a waste of ink and paper for the amount of actual content. I stopped using their notes module altogether and went back to paper charts within 6months. It was embarrassing to send my Valant notes to consultants and PCPs.

Reason for choosing Valant EHR Suite

Their simple clinical notes module (clicking, dictating) looked promising, but after trying for six months I switched back to paper charts.

Vendor Response

Dr. Hamamoto, thank you for providing a review of Valant. We always appreciate the feedback good or bad. We are very sorry for your recent experience getting product support. Due to COVID, we have had a record number of requests creating a backlog with our support team, but we have made some adjustments and are rapidly improving response time. We pride ourselves on our high level of service and take this feedback very seriously. Regarding the Silverlight technology and notes module, we have recently released a new platform (IO) that offers a much-improved user experience and is compatible with modern browsers. We are transitioning existing customers to this new platform in waves. Our customer success team will be reaching out to you to discuss access to the new platform and provide support for any outstanding issues.

Great to start

As a solo practice I am able to add providers or support staff easily at a cost of course, billing has not been the best but they use Change health which has its own problems, This is a great starter EHR which is growing and keeps upgrading so I have not changed in hopes of more upgrades like reports that are useful

PROS

I find it east to use, the finished notes look good and read well, macros work well, the new patient portal looks very professional, lots of upgrades in the past year, customer service has improved, enjoy the training videos

CONS

cost continues to go up, new features cost more if you want to use them, there are delays and bugs when new upgrades happen which can be disruptive to workflow,

Reason for choosing Valant EHR Suite

easier to use and at the time cheaper, may be the same cost now

Essential to my practice

I'm satisfied with it enough to select this for my use in my solo venture, and selected Valant for how I manage my practice.

PROS

I had learned Valant years ago, before their I/O product went live, with another practice. This present iteration addressed all of the quirks that the prior version had that makes using it for the basic functions I need very easy & intuitive.

CONS

There's some features and items that exceed the scope of my practice that are part of the package, with some features being utterly underutilized. I'm not particularly crazy about paying an annual subscription ON TOP OF monthly service fees.

TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE

We have had problems with getting any customer service and help with technical issues. They have told us for at least 2 years that an upgrade was coming to the system so we did not change after the first year because we were holding out, but now it has been too long and we are seeking a new provider.

PROS

Ease of use with scheduling and documenting

CONS

If you ever want to add a user, make changes, have questions for support they take weeks to respond and typically do not resolve your issue. We have had problems with the e-prescribe since day one (3 years ago) and it has yet to be resolved. We have also been told since day one that they were upgrading the system soon so that other features like payment online could be taken and we are still waiting on this.

Worth The Money But Many Avoidable Issues

PROS

Pretty easy to read doctor's schedules and I have the ability to group schedules to my liking. There are a lot of features that other offices can use that would make Valant first choice over other EMRs.

CONS

I would have liked more customization to make my job easier. As a practice that doesn't accept insurance, I would have liked to take off some features that are included while hovering over each patient. We don't need to worry about insurance and copays. Instead, I would have liked to see any balance amount and especially patient's D.O.B. In order to get to any of that info, you need to click twice to get to patient's info and then click another time to actually access their info. Another example is putting a patient's card on file. If they don't have an appointment the same day you have to make a "fake" appointment under their name in order to put a card on file, enter their info and then exit out and delete that appointment. Another example would be if I needed to block out a certain time, I can't just select time time and complete it. I have to go to "non patient appointment" and enter some kind of text which often would be "." (a period). Otherwise I can't make a time block. Another issue, though not last, is that cards on file are stored in a separate software which you have to log in. The problem with that is in order to look at patient's payment history (i.e. which card they used for which service) you would have to log in to NMI. Overall I feel there's a lot of unnecessary clicking that could be avoided in order to make this software easier to use. I feel if this software had more options and ability to cater to what I need, I would have liked it more.

Reasons for switching to Valant EHR Suite

Too many issues amongst the whole practice.

Finally an excellent EMR program!

I am pleased our practice is using Valant and find it has my personal practice viable. I have used the most expensive to the free versions of other software companies, both in private practice and in hospital. I find Valant the finest product I have used. Objectively, no program is perfect, any more than there is such a thing as a perfect Clinician. However, in researching other EMR programs, I feel confident in saying that Valant is the best of the best. I have been using computers in my practice since my start in Family Practice in 1986, during the days of "DOS". Valant is an example of what can be achieved with a great team of programmers and support personnel! This will be a well spent investment in your practice.

PROS

This is my ninth EMR I have had to learn and use. Out of all I have used in my 41 years of practice, this is the finest. It is well designed, well supportive and serves us well in a General Psychiatry and Psychology practice. Both the Therapists and Prescribing Clinicians have adapted well to it, and I as a Prescribing Physician Assistant find it an excellent way to follow and care for my patients. I cannot speak to the billing module, however the clinical sections are near perfect. I have even owned a self contained EMR that remained resident on my laptop prior to Internet Cloud based programs. Valant far exceeds my needs and expectations for a program for a Psychiatric program.

CONS

The so called "Patient Portal" does not integrate with the patient's chart and must be under development as it is not yet in the newest "IO platform". That appears to be the only deficit I have experienced thus far after using Valant for over four years.

Reasons for switching to Valant EHR Suite

Each practice I joined owned a different program, plus the one I started with when I owned a Family Practice in 1986. I was forced to learn a new EMR each time I changed practices.

Valant.io and the phenomenal customer service.

I do apologize for adding this under the heading of EHR Suite. I couldn't find the location for reviewing Valant.io (probably user error! HA!) Anyhow, as I said before, the initial changeover was difficult. I feel that your team has made some very necessary adjustments and those that have not yet changed over will have less trouble than I had. I feel with the customer service that I have received thus far, I have no doubt that your team will be able to make more necessary adjustments in the future that will further help the ease of use.

PROS

I was weary of the new valant.io system. Initially, it was difficult to use. Once the team made some much needed updates and I was able to learn the new interface, I actually prefer valant.io to the other system. I like that each click now has its own tab. I LOVE that you can actually type in a patient name in reports and it actually takes you to the letter in the alphabet rather than having to scroll through the entire list of patients. I like the record appointment feature. The billing tab is SO HELPFUL! Your customer service team is one of the best in the business. They know their stuff and if they don't know, they find someone who does. I am EXTREMELY IMPRESSED with customer service at valant. I am very excited about the prospect of using the patient portal. I was unaware that this came as a part of my current subscription. I think more practices would use it if they knew they didn't have to pay extra per month and that the costs for previous patients is minimal.

CONS

I was weary of the new valant.io system. Initially, it was difficult to use. Once the team made some much needed updates and I was able to learn the new interface, I actually prefer valant.io to the other system. The patient statement section needs a lot of work. I need to be able to print simple statements for the patients. I can understand your statements but they are not patient friendly. My patients don't need to see reason codes and charge backs, etc. They need...you were charged, insurance paid this, you owe this due to copay, coinsurance, etc. Also, we all work under one facility. If I only have one facility, I should not need to use the drop down box to put the facility in each time I am adding in a patient.

Vendor Response

Hi Alisha, Thank you for the thoughtful review and detailed feedback. Our customer service team is passionate about helping practices like yours and is so appreciative of this positive feedback. We love hearing about what's working well, as well as what we can continue to improve, and your product suggestions have been passed along to our development team. Thank you so much!

Good, but with a few stupid annoying issues

Tech support people are nice, but when there is a system-wide issue, they do not answer the phones. They have been unable to solve the repeated crashing of Silverlight and the issue with not accepting diagnoses when entered in mobile notes.

PROS

I like that it is just for psychiatry and I like mobile notes. I like having integrated prescribing, billing, and credit card processing, electronic EOB's from payers. I like that there is an app for my iPad and iPhone so I can take a quick look at notes and write prescriptions. I like the reminders that the system gives, the ease of scheduling appointments and entering payments. With an electronic EOB, you just hit a button and all the payments and adjustments are recorded automatically. Beware that the integrated insurance clearing house adds more to the monthly fee you pay.

CONS

I have been using this for 10 months. There are recurring problems that no one can seem to solve. When I entered nonclinical patient information in the "patients" tab and hit save, Microsoft internet explorer would crash, but not every time. I made repeated calls to tech support and their solution was to change browsers to Firefox. I have done so, but still have the same issue except the message on my computer is that the Silverlight plug-in has crashed. This happens several times per day. In mobile notes, there is no functionality of the tab button (for indentation) when I am trying to write a note and this annoys me to no end. The system has crashed several times in the past 10 months, never for more than a few hours, but enough to disrupt my workflow. I had to write a few paper prescriptions when the mobile notes and e-Prescribing crashed the other day. The patient's diagnoses can be entered using mobile notes, but then, I have to open the patient chart and reenter them or else when I go to bill, it says there is no visit diagnosis. I have asked about this multiple times. Navicure, the integrated insurance clearinghouse just raised their rates.

Would recommend Valant for Mental Health

The reason we have stayed with Valant since 2016 is the ease of navigating the flow of the work. Documentation and the way it prints out in a professional manner is a plus, customer service - especially for billing - they go above and beyond to resolve issues/answer questions. Never make you feel inadequate. Appointment reminders have made a huge difference in reducing no shows.

PROS

Customer support is awesome. Usually the wait time to talk to a live person is short and usually the person answering the phone can resolve the issue without having to escalate it. The billing system takes time to understand how all pieces work together - but after practice and the assistance of customer support - it is user friendly, efficient use of my time.

CONS

The department that has the worst customer service is accounting for sure. They do not return voicemails and only respond to emails. However, some issues/questions are better resolved by a quick phone call vs. multiple emails back and forth.

Reasons for switching to Valant EHR Suite

Had everything (documentation, scheduling and billing) all in one system.

Buyer beware.

Valant unilaterally extended us for 12 months, when we were a few months away from closing out our account with them (with Valant's tech team assisting our switch, and business side aware) - and they sent the "renewal notification" to a random person who was not ever a part of our practice. We are contesting their charges with the bank, filing a complaint with the better business bureau, and will proceed to court if necessary. It has been an unfortunate and unprofessional experience dealing with Valant, not to mention we were also dissatisfied with the product. Buyer beware.

PROS

We found the product lacking overall. The functionality of the documentation side is too limited, including features related to MACRA/Meaningful Use.

CONS

We found the EMR to be lacking compared to more robust alternatives, and therefore decided to change to another product. Then we also had very serious issues thereafter, with Valant unilaterally extending us for 12 months, as we were about to close out our transition to the other EMR vendor. (Valant's tech team was assisting us with the switch, and business/customer-service side was aware). This was an unprofessional, despicable money grab. Why would we extend with Valant for 12 months, when we were a few months away from closing our account?

Well suited my my solo practice and for expanding its use to other clinicians

I can not say strongly enough how helpful Valant has been in integrating each of the steps involved with consumer care- from registration, insurance, clinical scheduling and documentation to billing. I could not function effectively without it and do not know of another vendor that matches Valant.

PROS

In the past, as an executive director for a larger mental health center using other software, Valant is easy to use, intuitive in functionality and adaptable. I could not operate a practice without it. When I do need assistance, Valant staff have been consistently helpful and on target with their instructions.

CONS

The software is really a strong asset and have really no complaints. I do engage in a variety of non-clinical mental health services such as consultation, training, supervision that I find the software limiting. I also would say trying to document a non-clinical contact, though possible, is not quite as easy as I would like. That said, I would never leave Valant and have found easy ways around each of these issues.

Great EHR for Mental health/Substance use therapist

Great. Works like it should 99% of the time and I only have one problem with it and that problem is not that big of a deal to me. I would recommend highly for mental health/substance use therapist note, documentation and scheduling.

PROS

Easy to use for the most part and well organized. Easy to find what I need and works as intended with a high reliability.

CONS

I only really have only one con to report about Valant and that is when using the templated notes from last on one, just one, of our templates, we use several templates, does not always pull the last information correctly, we make a template in Word unique to our office and Valant uploads it to their EHR. Not a hugh problem and I would still recommend Valant 10/10 as this is not anything more than a minor inconvience.

Reasons for switching to Valant EHR Suite

The last EHR was terrible and Valant looked good, and it is.

"we are working on it"

System works but if something goes wrong you are on your own. They used to have decent phone support but that has gone by the wayside. This morning we cannot upload documents ts and there is no one to help.

PROS

I can access it from anywhere, specifically meant for psychiatric practice.

CONS

Very poor customer support. Not able to connect to other products The keep promising new features but things rarely work

Reasons for switching to Valant EHR Suite

wanted more flexibility

Vendor Response

Hello Dr. Vasavada, We sincerely appreciate you taking the time to leave a review. We are proud of our ability to provide specialized support to behavioral health practices and are very sorry you have not had a good experience thus far. We recognize that we had a brief period of time where support wait times were unacceptable. We're happy to report that we have recently made some significant changes to our support process that have resulted in a much better experience for our customers. Since November 2020, we have maintained consistent wait times under two minutes and in December, 75% of our calls were answered in less than 15 seconds. We are committed to maintaining this consistency moving forward. We hope to earn your trust again.

I truly love this EMR , I recommend it to colleagues frequently and despite its features I dislike the most , I still love it

PROS

Ease of use , intuitive steps, complete risk assessments in progress notes , access 24/7 from anywhere due to cloud storage.frequent updates keep us cutting edge Love it

CONS

many times ( most recently ) frequent weekly updates that say the use will not be affected but in fact it does, the system becomes very slow and consumes very valuable time another con as the company has grown , been there since 2014, personalized help is hard to find

Reason for choosing Valant EHR Suite

liked the features and the fact it was designed by a psychiatrist for for psychiatrists , we house a few therapist and they too have a good platform to use

Valant Behavioral Health

I have been using Valant EHR for Behavioral health for approximately 11 months now. I struggled with this company at first as is typical in my experience with the sales staff wanting to hurry up and close the sale. I was left with a few questions hanging. I use an ipad, iphone and Macbook pro. As you can see, I am exclusively and apple user. This made the difference for me. There was one EHR that really had most of what I wanted, minus the apple support. It was PIMSY. I have probably tried 20 EHR types, ranging from FREE to paid. This one iis monthly for one provider. I do not like the fact that they want to charge monthly for a login for my assiantant. Again I am a solo practitioner, so every little bit does count. I DO like the fact that an intake/Psychiatrist Diagnostic Evaluation is already preloaded with screeners, automatic scoring and auto generated reports that you can modify!! I do NOT like their Treatment Plan Template. Definitely something that they need to work on. HOWEVER, they seem to be making changes based upon the feedback that I and others have left. So that is good to know.

PROS

I absolutely appreciate the intake information is so well implemented. I can capture just about everything with minimal typing. I also appreciate the fact that there are so many screening tools that AUTOMATICALLY give the results. I can customize those results as well. Very good job on this part!

CONS

I really do not like the Treatment Plan Template. It is not intuitive or very well prepopulated for convenience. It seems to take longer than hand writing one. HOWEVER there was a recent update that has addresses some of my concernes. I have not had much of an opportunity to check this out. I do not like the fact that it is so difficult to upload documents if you are using a mobile device such as an ipad/iphone. A photo screen capture would be great!

Easy to use

I have been using this system for a few years now, and for the money, it is a great buy and I have no regrets.

PROS

The Intake Assessment provided gives a clear overview of the needs of the client. Keeping track of the payments is a breeze. Progress notes are easy to use and treatment plan suggestions make this process easy. Informed Consent, Diagnosis page, Mental Status Exam and many other suggested or necessary documents are at your fingertips.

CONS

I always seem to find it hard to find the treatment plan after it is finished, when I want to go back to it. That could just be me.

Reason for choosing Valant EHR Suite

Valant seemed to have everything I need in my private practice. If I have questions, the support staff has been wonderful and helpful, resolving issues quickly. I know other therapists who use products that cost less, but I wouldn't trade Valant for one of them.

Great Billing and Reporting

PROS

From a clinician standpoint, billing does not always come naturally. However, Valant has been effective at integrating the billing/reporting features with the every day work flow creating increased ease of use

CONS

It was an issue not to be able to customize mobile notes. However, due to recent expansion of features we've been able to customize to our needs. We look forward to new features!
