Overall, I’m glad we made the shift. MonkeyPod is the first accounting platform I’ve used that actually understands nonprofit operations instead of awkwardly forcing nonprofits into small business accounting software that was modified after-the-fact. The integration between fundraising, grants, donor management, and accounting eliminates a massive amount of spreadsheet work, duplicate entry, and disconnect between finance and development teams. More importantly, it pushes organizations toward better accounting discipline and best practices. Cleaner fund tracking, stronger workflows, and better reporting conversations happen naturally once teams lean into the system. A lot of accountants initially feel MonkeyPod is restrictive compared to QBO, Xero, or Sage. Frankly, those “restrictions” are just solid internal controls that other systems never bothered building out. MonkeyPod makes it harder to fill your books with garbage, and I view that as a strength, not a weakness. The learning curve is real, though. MonkeyPod does SO many things that are usually spread across multiple systems, and that can feel overwhelming at first. Their Welcome Wednesday meetings were honestly a game changer for me. Even passively attending them helped me build familiarity with the platform much faster. The support team has also been consistently excellent. They understand nonprofits, they listen to feedback, and they are constantly improving the platform. I never got that from QBO, Xero, or Sage support. That said, some areas still need maturation for more advanced finance teams, especially around highly customized reporting, allocation flexibility, and certain accounting workflows. But it’s also obvious they are actively working on those gaps. One important caveat: no accounting system fixes poor operational habits. If an organization refuses to capture receipts, document approvals, or follow basic workflows, switching software will not magically create accurate reports. If a nonprofit is not willing to improve its operational discipline, changing systems will usually just create more chaos, not less. Too much of nonprofit accounting in those systems happens outside the software itself through spreadsheets, manual reconciliations, shadow reporting, and cleanup work by accountants after-the-fact. MonkeyPod was the first platform I used that treated grants, restrictions, projects, fundraising, and accounting as connected operational realities instead of separate silos. It pushed organizations toward cleaner workflows and better accounting discipline instead of relying on accountants to constantly fix broken processes downstream. #### Vendor response Thanks Jenn! Customer support doesn't seem to ever have a consistent answer for problems, promises aren't fulfilled, critical features like webhooks and native form integration just don't work for fiscal sponsor clients. (For example, when listing a point of contact on a corporate or foundation relationship, I would like that to link to the individual's profile). Notably, though, this particular quirk can be addressed by "householding" various entities within the system, and like I stated before, they welcome feature requests so I wouldn't be surprised if they included this update in the future. #### Reasons for switching to MonkeyPod Honestly I'm not sure as the switch occurred prior to my onboarding. No other service does this! Moreover, their preset accounting structure helps small nonprofits learn how to correctly record transactions in line with GAAP standards. With unlimited users, your whole team can work on initiatives together. And the platform's API integration allows for so many opportunities for integration with additional services -- some already built, but the option to build new ones for an affordable rate always available. I love that we can manage our memberships, donations, customers, vendors, and employees all in one place. #### Cons The platform is still relatively new and they continue to build out areas and fix bugs, as well as address usability. Great communications ([sensitive content hidden] was a gem). It is intuitive for anyone who has some database experience, has native email management, pipeline building tools but also connects with your other fav. tools like eventbrite, jotform. easy to use. Financial Management is a part of the database - which is rare. I also like that Monkeypod is a great partner in the nonprofit ecosystem, not just as a product provider. Their commitment to supporting small nonprofits is commendable. #### Cons Some of the web integration features were simplistic and didn't allow customization. We migrated from another system and it was flawless. Pricing is reasonable, too - we are saving a considerable amount over what we paid in prior years. We are using the email feature and have found it to be easy to navigate. Searching for donors is simple and they were categorized appropriately when the database was moved over to MonkeyPod. #### Cons Because we send regular USPS mail, we need donors mailing address. The system for people to sign up for email newsletters doesn't capture the USPS address. You can scan your invoices and save them in MonkeyPod with the check number and payee so all your information is in one spot if you need to refer back to it. The support is incredible, questions are answered the same day and the support team works with you until the problem is solved. They donʻt send you a link to watch a video and figure it out on your own like so many other companies do, they talk to you and suggest solutions and follow up with you to make sure itʻs resolved. #### Cons We are a performing arts venue so a ticketing module that includes a season ticket and flexpass option as well as single tickets would make my life complete. Overall, building an email campaign is a really easy but you do have to delete the suggested template pieces before you can build a new campaign. We connected with 24 other companies (contracted with 2 that could not provide promised capabilities) before discovering Monkeypod - a platform that merged NP capabilities with our “product” involving construction! #### Cons Ease of email and pre-made donation form that may not capture all of a donor’s data. #### Reasons for choosing MonkeyPod Their sales department was able to actually show us how screens could be built-out with features we required. As an administrator who will be handing the transactions off to a bookkeeper in the future, it was important that Monkeypod truly understood that admin required UI knowledge/training first; they were extremely patient in getting me to near-mastery level. When we began our search for a new CRM, MonkeyPod wasn't even on our radar. We found out about it in a roundabout way, and seeing the demo blew the competition away. The features, ease and intuitive use, and customer support were exactly what we needed for our small non-profit. I've been very satisfied with MonkeyPod. It was intimidating at first, as I've found these types of platforms challenging in the past, but once I got onboarded it was a cinch. I really appreciate the personalized attention when I have an issue that needs addressing. And their onboarding videos are great. There are infinite ways that this system makes work easier and helps us focus on our mission first and foremost. #### Cons Data transfer from other systems is complicated because of how difficult it is to get the data you need out of those other systems you might have been using in the past. But MonkeyPod's staff is incredibly helpful and the templates they provide make is so much easier! There's a temptation to try to migrate only one system at a time and I think that's ultimately a mistake. Just bite the bullet and take the time to get the data imported correctly and you'll be so happy you have a functional integrated system to use (you won't miss those other programs for a second!). #### Reasons for choosing MonkeyPod I used MonkeyPod at my old job and when I moved into my new position at a new nonprofit I knew that using MonkeyPod was a MUST. We've just finished migrating all of our data over, and are up and running. We have yet to do a fundraiser with MonkeyPod, but our donor management, email campaigns, individual donations, and ongoing accounting is all going smoothly. Their staff is incredibly responsive! Amazing support, made even more so by the fact that our organization is small enough to be on their discounted plan and they didn't skimp at all on any onboarding help we asked for. With only one paid staff member and one contracted grant writer, we need to be very efficient with people's time. The integration of our donor management, accounting, marketing, grant tracking, to do lists, (everything!) in one place is huge. Rather than having a collection of different tools (MailChimp, Quickbooks, DonorBox, Dropbox, etc.) we now have all staff, board members, and volunteers working off one system. We avoid a lot of duplicated effort now and have streamlined multiple workflows. This efficiency creates greater capacity for our staff to focus on the bigger tasks for the foundation. And the simple access to view our budget, donations, grants, and various action items gives our volunteer board quick and easy visibility into the health and status of the organization at any point.From a technical standpoint, I appreciate the lean/modern design of MonkeyPod and the absolutely incredible responsiveness of their customer service and technical team. I appreciate that the program isn't bloated with features that we'll never use (some of the other CRM packages have far more than we need for donor management or email marketing), but it has just about everything we need to efficiently run our nonprofit.Their weekly Wednesday open hours are a brilliant idea -- giving customers a regularly schedule time to talk face-to-face with knowledgeable staff about how to best use MonkeyPod. #### Cons There are some inconsistencies in the interface that trip me up occasionally, but I'm hopeful those will be resolved over time. They could also offer more for custom reporting. You can export to Excel and create your own reports there, but sometimes data needed for our reports isn't available with an export. #### Reasons for choosing MonkeyPod Integrated accounting, ability to track our outbound funds (awards to schools), feature set isn't overkill for our needs, and Community Edition pricing made it accessible. #### Reasons for switching to MonkeyPod We needed an integrated system for all these tasks. The automated integration of CRM, email marketing, online fundraising, accounting and reporting, and task management saves time while increasing transparency. MonkeyPod's user-driven feature development portal is also a huge plus. #### Cons As a newer to market product, there are some features that are still in development. That said, MonkeyPod actively communicates its product development roadmap with users and gives users a voice in the process.
