Intacct is a Web-based financial accounting software system with a broad set of functionality for small to midsized businesses. Founded in 1999 in San Jose, California, Intacct now serves over 30,000 users. The system is meant for a wide variety of industries as a horizontal accounting system.

Intacct can support applications for core accounting, time and expenses, revenue management, project accounting, order and billing, purchasing, global consolidations, multi-currency management and financial reporting.

Intacct is Web-based Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and can be accessed on demand through a browser over the Internet. Oracle is the database for Intacct, while the applications and data are hosted in IBM e-business Hosting Centers. Disaster recovery functions are provided by Sungard.

Customizable process flowcharts. Simple chart of accounts structure and extensibility. The report wizard tool is simply unmatched. One of the most reliable software.

The accounting software is easy to use. The GL is easy to set up. The Inventory module is very basic. We are looking to buy another software package to handle our requirements

Very easy to setup - intuitive, decent UI and a good pool of consultants who know the application. Simple to use. Also a very healthy ecosystem of apps and supporting services. SalesForce connects seamlessly. There is a lot you can do which means there is a lot to learn. There are some reporting features that could be improved.

I like how simple it is to figure out how to use Intacct and navigate around the system. It makes it simple for training and understanding the product. If you can think of it, you can most likely get it done in Intacct. There is just so much customization available to make the report that give you what is most important to you a reality.

My company uses Intacct as a General Ledger, and we pass inventory transactions through the Inventory module only for monthly reconciliation. There really aren't any built-in Inventory and Purchasing management functions, just custom reporting/dashboards available. For the price, the program allows our mid-size company to keep the finance and accounting stuff together, but it's kind of clumsy.

Pros

I do like the GUI interface.

Cons

The quarterly release updates always seem to cause some kind of regression unrelated to the newly releasing functionality. It takes my company time and energy to validate exactly what is wrong and test multiple scenarios before going to Intacct for answers, and they always seem to be totally unaware of the issue.

We started using Intacct on 07-01-16 and have now used it for 4 months.

Pros

Intacct is very customizable.
Intacct allows you to attach documents (pdf, excel, word, etc) to each transaction.
Intacct can have many dimensions which gives it a lot of functionality.
Intacct allows you to schedule automatic emailed reports.

Cons

The cost to implement is more that other software's like QuickBooks or Cougar Mountain. The cost to implement is almost equivalent to one year's subscription.
The report writing is not very easy and takes time to learn.
They start charging you during the set-up and implementation instead of on the go live date. My feelings are they do this so it is hard to switch softwares because you either have to pay for an extra year (if you are going to switch software) or you have to pay for another software early because of the untimely annual software renewal date.
The budgeting aspect for original and multiple amended budgets is not the easiest to use. We are still working out the functionality of it. Not one of its strong points.

Advice to Others

It is not as easy as QuickBooks to use but is supposed to provide more customization. We are still getting used to it.

I like being able to post multi company entries in one GJ entry. The automatch with review bank rec module is helpful.

The bank rec module does not allow rearranging the columns or resorting the data without closing out and re-entering.

Recommendations

It takes time to learn to use this but once it is learned, it becomes easier to use.

The software is user friendly and I like the feature of attaching documents. Really speeds up the process vs looking to files to get the needed info. Also I like the ability to issue ACH payments, this has been very helpful in speeding up our payable process. another great quality is the ability to look at all of our entities from one level.

I do not like that to access attachments on invoices you have to open the invoice entry first. It would be nice to have a filter that allows this from the bill list screen. I also do not like that there was a current update within Intacct or Microsoft where now i have to take additional steps to export GL to excel. It would also be helpful to have more than one report open at a time.

Recommendations

I strongly recommend doing a trial with any new software and allowing those who will be using it to all try it out. Also through intacct we were given a sample company to work with for a few months allowing us to try out all the different features. This made us feel great at the beginning of the year when we started using the actual system. On top of the sample company we were provided training which allowed us to ask questions.

There are several things I like best about this product and vendor:

Product:
1) Cloud service is nice - you can access the product from any location and we have not experienced any down time to date
2) Automatic Allocations allow us to allocate invoices and journal entries upon entry instead of waiting until the end of the month
3) Reports are easy to write and very versatile
4) Dimensional tracking allows you to track more than just an account number for each transaction line item. Reports on dimensions are also great.


Vendor:
1) Support is very responsive - it is extremely easy to open a support case and have an issue resolved in the same day.

I wish the general ledger reporting was more streamlined. Since we are allocating many of our invoices to multiple dimensions as they are entered, the GL shows multiple lines for each AP invoice. It would be nice if you could summarize by GL account while still allocating to different dimensions, but you cannot. This results in a much longer GL report, but we have adapted by creating additional reports to use in place of the standard GL reports.

Recommendations

It is a great option if you are looking to allocate transactions upon entry and if you are looking to track other items such as departments, projects, locations, etc in addition to the account number. The reporting options are endless and it is nice to be able to report on accounts in addition to dimensions or some combination thereof.

It's pretty easy to use and more robust than Quickbooks.

The tech support. I wish you could just dial a number and get an answer. You always have to put in a ticket, which is time consuming.

Recommendations

I would actually recommend that you ensure all of your current processes can be handled by Intacct without them having them customize the modules in order for you to use them.

The Intacct software is unmatched in its field! We looked at other products for an ERP but none of them provided reporting features that were almost custom fitted to our business! With the dimensions built into the software we can view the different parts of our business in multiple angles in order to make critical business choices! With custom dashboards our management can easily find what they need with scrolling through hundreds of accounts and charts!

I also greatly appreciate the customer service Intacct has provided! They've walked with us from fact finding to implementation. Via their Intacct community portal, I can even find other users who are utilizing the software and explore how we might tailor the software even more to fit our business needs!

I haven't found much to dislike yet. The only thing that disappoints me is the additional cost for the AP approval workflow. It would be nice if that feature was included in the cost of the software.

Recommendations

Look critically at your business complexity and your reporting needs. If you multiple entities and locations that need information at the tip of their fingers then definitely consider Intacct in your software choices!
