Qlik Sense Software

Qlik Sense is a Business Intelligence (BI) visual analytics platform that supports a range of use cases, including centrally deployed guided analytics apps and dashboards, custom and embedded analytics, and self-service visualization, all within a scalable, governed framework.

The system offers visualization and discovery for individuals, collaboration and mobility for groups and teams, and data integration, management and governance capabilities for large organizations. Qlik Sense helps users find all the possible associations that exist in their data, across all their data sources, with the Qlik Associative Data Indexing Engine. Users can see the whole story instead of only the partial views offered by hierarchical tools. Qlik Sense also offers an HTML5 client, which helps businesses gain useful insights into their information to help each employee make better business decisions.

I like Qlik Sense a lot because it has the power of the Qlikview Engine but with the possibility to start a dashboard just with a simple drag and drop for non technical users and it has a variety of charts or object out of the box that you could use to facilitate this, definetely a good self service BI tool.

Pros

Powerful for heavy backend processes or ETL in general, no matter how the data is you can always transform it to build a good data model

Cons

The canvas of work could be better, is strange at the begining on how the charts allign and change depending of the size of the object you are using, a smaller grid would be better.

Advice to Others

I enjoyed using it because of the power that it has with its Freemium version, basicaly is offering the same funcionalities than the paid version with some exeptions like sharing, server and some other of course but for a small buisness or just a personal use it's perfect.

Qlik Sense has helped us analyze hundreds of millions of lines of data quickly and efficiently, with relative ease to how we were operating previously. We are one of the rare customers that does not work with sales data, rather security services with staffing levels, compliance performance variables, service forecasting, etc.

This has made it a little difficult to get help from the Qlik Community and Qlik directly as every example is geared towards financial information or selling goods. There is a distinct lack of resources out there if your company is in the same boat as us. We have had multiple staff members go through Qlik courses and we purchased the official book for Qlik Sense that was available at the time, which only covers the very basics.

Once you have your data connections flowing, and you spend the time learning and experiencing the product, you will start to benefit a lot more than taking the training (my opinion). The program itself is great, and it is amazing how fast and efficiently you can zoom in and out of enormous levels of data. My example would be to see a yearly total of hours billed, then each click zooms a level --> Year, Month, Week, Day, Hour, Minute of 900 staff members punching at 25 different locations at various times of the day at a 24 hour operation, then right back out to the yearly view. There is no slow down, the transitions are almost seamless.

Pros

The quickness and ease of building tables, charts, graphs, etc. in the front end.

Cons

There is a distinct lack of technical resources when you are not dealing with sales and financial data.

Advice to Others

Ask to speak with existing customers in similar businesses, to see whether this is right for you.

After having used Qlik View for about 4 years now we are looking forward to the new possibilities that the Qlik Sense Server brings to us. With Qlik View we could take our first steps in real data analysis and we are now ready to start over with Qlik Sense very soon which will make our analysis much more interactive and collaborative.

Pros

Qlik Sense has some really nice new visualizations that we do not have in Qlik View. It further brings us the possibility to have a real self service BI environment. Qlik has a very fast product development so that we are sure that we can grow further with Qlik Sense.

Cons

If there are any cons there is no doubt that Qlik will do anything to elimnate them as quickly as possible.

I have used Qlik products already 10 years. At the beginning QlikView and now their new product QlikSense as well. When QlikView was revolutionary in the past then now the QlikSense is quite the same situation. Product have intuitive user interface and allows powerful data insights even not too experienced business user. Doing the visualizations in QlikSense is easier than even in Excel.

Pros

Easy to use. Personal Edition is free - it's good for evaluating and testing product for different areas (even for personal needs like getting overview about physical activities or personal finance etc.)

Cons

Some powerful functions are missing comparing with QlikView but fortunately the product develops so quickly that I'm not worrying about that quite much :-).

Advice to Others

At least try and evualate it yourself :-)

I've been using Qlik for a couple years now, and one thing they always seem to take in to consideration when further developing their technologies is how easy it is to use. Qlik Sense is such a powerful tool and has such great flexibility. They allow for multiple types of sources for your data. Their graph wizards make it extremely easy to get started with visualizing your data. The graphs and lists are all interactive, and help show you how all your data is related.

Pros

Easy to use
Effective
Community is very useful for learning more, and getting help
Fast, and responsive

Cons

In the time I have used Qlik Sense, I haven't come across many things that stand out. At this time I don't have anything bad to say about their product.

Advice to Others

At the very least, download their trial and do a couple of their tutorials, or even use your own data if you think you can right off the bat. I am sure you'll be impressed with Qlik.

REally nothing. the software is great. just some little bug in the earlier version, in the console management for the server version, but nothing of really important. With this great software You have fast analysis, great interactive dashboards and also cool maps. It's also cool Qlik Branch, where we've found a lot of cool extensions to use in our dashboards.

Recommendations

Try it! Download the desktop version and use it, also with a simple excel workbook, to evaluate the power of this software!

Qlik is really a good company, in a few years thanks to an excellent work of its software optimization is gaining the leading places in the quadrant Gartner business intelligence, customer service is always available and very attentive to customer needs.
Qlik Sense is a great product available in both Client version and the Server version.
With this software you will be able to create very attractive dashboard and extremely powerful.
Its strengths are the absolute ease of use and incredible power in the processing of data in-memory.
Qlik, once imported your data, allowing you to view the data and process the data in an incredible speed, you can do extensive analysis without any performance problem, and when they have an excellent graphical interface.
Very performing the totally interactive charts absolutely excellent ability to create keys and relationships automatically and autonomously.

Likes Least

There are a few negative points of this software, it would still improve the ability to interact and modify items within a single chart as choosing colors for some measures, for now you can only set up automatic color or monochrome.
Starting to use the product the setting of the synthetic keys is not very easy to understand but once you understand the correlation mechanism they are really performing.

Recommendations

The product is really good and efficient, always look for new updates because they are very frequent and each update provides new features very useful.

Qlik has never been a company to sit on it's hands as competitors eat up it's margins. As such, Sense is an obvious response to the simplicity and aesthetic beauty that Tableau brings to the table. Drag and drop analytics make Sense an amazing tool for power users still trying to bend Excel to their needs while providing many unique and compelling ways to share the knowledge gained.
In addition to simplicity, Sense is at home in a mobile environment. Build a single application and deploy to any device with a browser, be it your laptop or iPad.

Likes Least

The biggest shorfall of Qlik Sense is it's age. Though well thought out, the product is still underdeveloped and can at times feel like a beta product in the hands of a more seasoned BI specialist. Simplicity often comes at the expense of customization.

Recommendations

If you are looking to push report creation responsibilities down to the front lines, Sense is worth a look. Power users comfortable manipulating Excel work sheets or Tableau will quickly come to love Sense while your IT department maintains control over the 'one source of truth' data source.

If you are looking for a mobile strategy I'd also encourage you to look more in to Sense. Careful attention to dynamic screen sizing and drag and drop analytics make it possible to do amazing things from an iPad in front of a customer.

Sense is not a BI product to replace QlikView or Cognos. Instead, it is an amazing product to safely get your data in to the hands of people who would have never known what to do with it before Sense.

Qlik Sense is a self-service analytical tool based on the same in-memory technology as QlikView. It's associative engine allows for snappy selections, filtering and prompt re-calculation of all charts and aggregations on the fly as the user navigates throughout the dashboard, even on datasets of over 100 million rows.
Qlik Sense focuses more on the self-service aspects of BI, where users are encouraged to build their own Adhoc visualisations without the use of keyboards simply by drag & dropping various elements, making the technology utmost business friendly. Also, as the whole technology is fully web-based, it embeds the latest visualisation libraries (D3, Raphael etc.) and allows for a seamless integration of customised extended JS charts (so-called extensions). The latter enables for unlimited possibilities when it comes to visualisations (http://d3js.org/) and further integration with web-services (R servers, real-time analytics, Hadoop etc.). Also, the Qlik Sense Server deployment is tailored to facilitate a multi-node deployment, allowing for a very scalable enterprise solution, even cloud-based.
The data security technology (Section Access) is the same one as in QlikView and is customisable, secure and robust.

All in all, when it comes to deploying a scalable and business-friendly BI solution, which has very presentable dashboards, a fast and robust aggregation engine with extended self-service capabilities, Qlik Sense is currently the best product of its kind on the market.

Qlik Sense is still a new product and not very mature yet, as it has only been released a year and a half ago. The review is based on Qlik Sens version 2.1 which is important to emphasise, because QlikTech is constantly updating the software and publishing releases with enhancements and bugfixes.
Qlik Sense is not the right tool, if you requirement is:
1. To have a guided analytics dashboard, where the user is constraint in the way he views his data.
-> This can be overcome by creating mashup websites, however you will need a web developer to do this.
2. Standardised reporting via Qlik Sense and production of pdf files is not possible (yet).
-> An integration with nPrinting, QlikTech's latest acquisition, could change this and it's on Qlik's roadmap for the next year.
3. Your BI solution needs to accommodate flexible data extraction capabilities (e.g. to Excel).

General current disadvantages:
1. The story telling functionality is not mature yet - users have more benefit using PowerPoint directly. In my opinion it's missing a live connection of the snapshots used in the story to the underlying chart objects.
2. Security settings (NOT on data level) are governed centrally via the management console and are complicated to comprehend.
3. No guided analytics aspects, even navigation between sheets can't be controlled.
4. No supported data extraction capabilities. It's almost impossible to get comprehensive extract of it's underlying data, something that was possible with QlikView (Export functionality e.g.)
5. The vendor has little practical knowledge on how Qlik Sense is deployed enterprise wide within a business and is not really able to support.
6. The vendor is focusing more on the data story telling and collaboration aspects of the Qlik technologies and almost imposes those on the business. Personally, I would prefer if QlikTech listened to its customers a little bit more.

Recommendations

If you need to do aggregations on the fly (Rankings, Ratios e.g.) in your dashboards on a large amount of data, Qlik is your only option. The technology used in Qlik Sense is very advanced (better than Tableau in my opinion) but not mature yet.
Do not use Qlik Sense if your prime requirement is to create standardised reports and to have a platform where users can extract data to use in Excel.
Qlik Sense is enterprise ready and very compatible with cloud deployments. Installation is extremely easy. Architecture of security settings requires a bit of a learning curve.
If you plan to incorporate your own bespoke and customised visualisations and extensions, hiring an JavaScript developer is highly recommended.

If there could be any improvements to be made, it would be to have the ability to resize the designing area (to make the size of the design grid smaller or larger depending on need).

Recommendations

Recognize the ease of mobility this product offers, the option to design and create in both the back and front end of the application--making it applicable to all types of users as well as the security settings available in Qlik Sense Enterprise.
