You can accomplish a lot with this tool. The use of universes connecting the tables is powerful. I also love the ability to set up email instances of reports - it’s always helpful when a software can do a routine task for you.

Cons

There have been some weird quarks in BO 4.0. Changes that we’ve made to a report will work one day and not the next. It’s not very friendly for someone who wants to do ad hoc analytical reporting.

It's highly scalable and flexible. We use it to track participants in youth serving agencies. We use it to connect many databases together. It's the best tool we've found in almost 20 years.

Cons

The only drawback is not the software itself, but rather training. We use it in a fairly non-traditional way, but I struggle to find training that is appropriate for our needs.

I am using SAP business objects at my current position for report creation and adjacent data queries and for simple data dumps

Pros

It's easy to use, the cost is less as compared to tableau or other BI products in the market and customer care is good.

Cons

You need to maintain universe layer to talk to the database, it does not talk to databases directly. If you have to add a new field in the report from the database then you have to add that particular field in universe layer which is added headache.
If you have to create a report by using data from multiple data sources then you have to create detail variable, which is again a mess!!!
Also, visualization wise it is pathetic because I have checked tableau. Usually, I use excel to do my visualization and presentation because it's better than business objects
Also, you cannot use it for predictive analysis.

Advice to Others

If you are looking for a product just to create simple monthly or yearly reports for small department then sap is good but if you want to do more with the data then look for other products in the market.

I think is a very complete BI suite, with a extense range of tools for extract, modeling and analyze data. The potential benefits of business Objects programs include accelerating and improving decision making; optimizing internal business processes and increasing operational efficiency

I find Business Objects to be an extremely useful tool to organize, display and share useful data throughout the company. My current and past employer both use the the enterprise reporting tool and have been for quite sometime. It is very end user friendly as well as super user friendly whenever edits need to be made or errors need to be fixed. This product has been around for a while and has constantly been updated with better improvements over time. All the data can be manipulated through queries or a drag and drop method for those who aren't as SQL savvy.

In my opinion, not all SAP BO offerings are equal, but several are very useful. The offerings we have chosen to utilize will, without doubt, help us to transform our business.

The offerings I find most useful for helping our field personnel and leadership get a better understanding of their environment are Lumira, Crystal Reports, Information Design Tool and HANA Studio. The Implementation of HANA is critical for reaching the next level of performance as well.

SAP has very good customer service and the free education and learning resources are very useful.

Likes Least

As with any new product there are bugs and errors. I have been frustrated at times with the newer software and sometimes even the more mature software can be frustrating.

Recommendations

- Take advantage of the learning resources to limit the learning curve.
- Be sure to FULLY understand each offering's value before deciding to adopt it.
- Get HANA implemented and start using it! Compared to the previous database architecture .... well .... there really is no comparison!

First of all, this toll is quite expensive, small and medium companies are not capable to spend a lot of money acquiring it and continue paying for supporting cost. Another think I dislike about SAP BO is it require a number of servers so this increment the amount of the spend.

Recommendations

If what you are looking for a software that is stable, well known and proved in the market, safe and Highly scalable and if you can afford it, you will acquire a great tool that will help you increase your prodcutivity.

The best part of SAP Business Objects is it's powerful suite of tools. You can run Analysis for Office for many end users and they are able to self serve whatever they need. You can build out powerful storyboards with Lumira. You can also create standardized formatted reporting with Crystal Reports. That doesn't even touch on Design Studio, which can also be a powerful tool.

Some of the programs are still not quite as bug free as you would expect from a vendor like SAP. I feel like we still have too many freezes, crashes, and unexplained behavior. However, I will say that SAP is very quick to respond and they are a great vendor to work with.

Recommendations

Have a very clear understanding of what you want to get out of this before making any decisions. There are a lot of products involved, and the licensing options are also varied. It can be very easy to make a mistake when purchasing. But I will also say that SAP is a wonderful partner and very willing to work with you.

Its best feature, in my opinion, is the ease of building reports through its drag and drop interface. We have several data universes which we use to generate the reports. Business Objects makes it quite easy to manipulate the data fields and build professional looking reports.

Likes Least

My least favorite thing about this product would have to be the lack of download capability in more current versions of Excel. Currently, Business Objects only downloads in Excel 2007 format, which can sometimes complicate pulling millions of rows of data into one spreadsheet. Office 2010 and 2013 are capable of handling millions of rows of data, but B.O. cannot deliver it into those new formats.

Recommendations

Evaluate thoroughly, your need for building data universes or data marts to simplify your users report construction. We went through many data modeling sessions where we worked on the construction of the marts and linked them so that the seemingly disparate data could be joined together to yield very meaningful reports. The better you build your models and marts, the faster your reports will run.

The main benefit is a great UX interface that makes building queries easy, repeatable, and amazingly quick. The ability to run queries in the background as well as scheduled daily/weekly queries is a major selling point as well. You can act as your own data analyst for a small business without having to manually update your reports.

Pros

Much faster than manual queries and data pulls from our internal software
The ability to build off of a saved query expedites all future queries
Features including reoccurring queries and running queries in the background so it does not interfere with your current work

Cons

There is a learning curve to understand how to use the queries, so there is some training involved
Some of the "result objects" do not pull data but that may be our data sources, not the program itself

The set of tools for BI it includes is good. We used just WEBI. It is really powerful for Data extraction purposes and we could match our information needs without much problems.

Cons

I feel that the WEBI interface is not very user friendly. At least for our type of reports. The navigation through the different reports was not smooth enough.

The best part was the robust enterprise nature of the system. Data quality is controlled centrally by IT and processes and users always know that the data they are getting is good quality and usable. It becomes a single source of truth

It frees up time

Pros

Every day I learn something new about the software and I'm always blown away but the capabilities. I dont know that I can pick out one thing I like most although a big one is how it allows me to take reports that to refresh previously would take quite a fair length of time but now that I have built the same reports in Business Objects I have automated most, if not all, of them. And many are even emailed to me at a time which I've scheduled so now that the reports are built, all I do is nothing. Just wait for them to be sent to my email inbox.

I wish there was an easy way to have my scheduled reports send to SharePoint (if there is a way please let me know);

Once your data is set up in the Universes, it's drag and drops on to the report. you can format it with colors or different fonts. Simply drag whatever dimensions you want onto the report and then create different filters or formulas to get the desired results. Super simple for users to get the reports they need.

Best features include Dashboards -- Allows us to create interactive dashboards that contain charts and graphs for visualizing data and reports.
Web Intelligence -- Provides a self-service environment for creating ad-hoc queries and analysis of data both online and offline.
Integration with an outlook for easy extraction and transformation of reports into excel.
Good usage fro Business Explorer (BEx) Suite (BEx Analyzer, BEx Web reporting).

I've been using Business Objects for over 10 years. I love the versatility of it. It's so easy to create reports for my end users. Better yet, show them how to create reports on their own. Once you have the universes set up, it's drag and drop into the reporting frame. Then, you can add filters, dashboards, sorting, whatever you need to get the desired results. Then you can schedule the reports out as an attachment to your email or simply view them or open them as an excel report. I highly recommend Business Objects to anyone who needs some easy reporting software that may not have a huge data warehouse background.
