TRAITS a game-changer

I have been using traits for 12 years. Obviously, I continue to use it because it is such a powerful and incisive tool - not only for the employer but for the employee. Whenever I am asked for advice relating to a performance management issue, for example, the first thing I do is have the person answer the TRAITS questionnaire. Invariably I find a complete misalignment between how the person would love to work and how they are working in their current job role. Too often, employees are rotated/promoted into roles (because they have done so well in the past job role) with little thought, if any, as to whether the person's innate strengths and preferences are likely to be a good match with those required for high-performance in the new job role. Of course, this is not always going to be possible however once a person understands, from the incisive graphs that are produced from the software, it is amazing how they are able to quickly recognise those areas that have been challenging them and understand how they may need to behave out of preference in future.

PROS

Recruitment processes can often be flawed if they don't take into account the specific trait requirements of the role being filled. Assessing a candidate's innate traits and how well they align with the trait requirements of the job can be crucial for finding the right fit. This results in greater engagement and productivity. TRAITS is a powerful tool that provides insights into a candidate's preferred working style and strengths. It then compares them to the traits required for success in a particular role. By doing this, employers can better understand how well a candidate aligns within their organization and how to best support their growth and development. It is also an empowering tool for the individual, giving them insights into their preferred working style and clarifying for them where they may be challenged in the role.

CONS

What I liked least has been addressed in the new iteration of TRAITS. It is now possible for re-use the Questionnaire on a person who has changed their role without their having to do the first half of the questionnaire (Innate traits). Innate traits change little if at all whilst job roles can change often. The Reports are also now more reader-friendly and less text heavy.

Reason for choosing TRAITS

TRAITS is the only tool that has been not only rigorously tested but also offers meaningful insights for both employee and employer to think more deeply about the traits that will lead to success in a job role. It is a very practical tool: easy to use and understand. It can be applied in professional and personal relationships so it is very versatile. It can add genuine value across the entire range of human resources functions and relationships.

Right person - right seat

"Right person - right seat" is the quote we have all heard many times in our businesses. It’s the benchmark for untapping personal performance. As much as this quote is said, how often are we actually considering all the resources available to make this happen? This was the case in our business years ago. We did what we were supposed to… review resumes, select some for interviews, prepare for the interview, conduct the interview, maybe have another interview, and then select the best candidate. Then something would happen; they would either thrive or move on… Turnover was costing us more than we knew. Since using TRAITS, our turnover related to role–individual alignment has been eliminated. TRAITS's clarity allows us to select the right candidate for the role and further develop them into the performer they want to be. TRAITS is very simple to use and understand, and I strongly encourage any business leader or manager to give TRAITS a try.

PROS

TRAITS assessments are easy to understand, quick to deploy and provide us with a significant layer of information when selecting candidates for an interview. It also helps us choose better questions to maximize the critical time we have with our candidate during the interview process.Personal development also becomes easier using TRAITS. If there are issues to resolve, the TRAITS reports can provide insights into where things are becoming off-track and be a starting point for growth dialogue.

CONS

There is nothing I dislike about TRAITS.
