Windward Software's Windward System Five helps small to midsize businesses manage their operations by providing an integrated point of sale and accounting solution with real-time inventory management.

Windward System Five is a built-in point of sale application. Among other features, the solution provides a signature capture option that helps minimize duplicate invoices and paperwork, POS barcode support that integrates with most scanners on the market, and the option to add or subtract “soft switches” that allow users to customize the program for their specific business practices.

Windward System Five is capable to document inventory movement between store locations, and users can also integrate the program with their online stores via the WeCommerce tool. It is available for a one-time license fee which includes support via phone and email.

I started using the program many years ago because of a interview with the Founder about the starting of program and the customer care and support for the program.

not happy with the sales rep. that sold me on additional programming and did not sell me the transferring of files from the old program, which is needed.

Pros

like the product, it does most of what I want it to do, being my business is automotive repair. The support team I've dealt with has always been helpful and pleasant to deal with.

Cons

I've found that some of the management was not as pleasant to work with, but I can't let one bad apple put a negative feel for the software.

Hack job for migration from former software

We waste a ridiculous amount of time waiting for support to figure out problems. After the initial conversion phase which was rough, we are largly left on our own.

Pros

There has been significant development for this product. It is obviously mature. The implementation specialist is very helpful.

Cons

The support department is very lacking. They usually cannot help and are very slow to respond. We spent 10s of thosands of dollars migrating to a system where I constantly need to rebuild screens because this software is built on an old framework with old technology. Welcome to the 90's. Uuuggg.

Clunky, dated

Inventory tracking, accounting and invoicing, inventory management.

Pros

The ability to link to invoices from serial numbers and edit unit costs and list prices from the inventory screen.

Cons

Creating reports is very finnicky, the search function is slow, the system allows errors that should be prevented (duplicate serial numbers).

All-in-one software!

Pros

What our company likes most about Windward is that the software houses many different functions that we utilize on a daily basis - accounting, invoicing, inventory, and rental.

Cons

What I personally like least about Windward is that the system is that it requires a manual entry on everything - it can be a pain when you have many different data sets.

Not the company they used to be

Tech support, unless you are down, may take days. Wasn't always that way. I used to praise them. I lost a feature to my program due to a bug problem....1 year later it is fixed but requires another upgrade to get it back. Worst thing I had to call to find out it was fixed even though I had an open support ticket for over a year

Pros

Very versatile, seemed to be the best for lawn and garden industry when I bought it over 10 years ago. Overall it works great.

Cons

Bug fixes can take months to fix and you could lose basic software features until next upgrade. 10 years ago it wasnt that way.

Interested in the software because of the flexibility and the data load.

Pros

Its organized and easy to use once you start to use it regularly. It definitely gets the job done.

Cons

Some of the features could be made easier to use. Also, the self-help option doesn't do much. Would like customer service to step up.

Easy to control your inventory.

Pros

1. Easy reports.
2. Easy to track what is going on with all your SKUS.
3. The interface is easy and able to use If you don't have to much experince on It.
4. Price is valuable.

Cons

It should be better If It is posible to conect this software to Power BI and all this online tolos that office 360 has.

Inventory is a breeze

Pros

We upgraded to this program and it is so much easier to knock out inventory work. Things are very fast paced around here.

Cons

I'm not personally a huge fan of the menu system. but it does what it is supposed to once you can learn where things are.

Don’t, just don’t

Staff and customer service who don’t care once you have transferred your funds. Issues will be addressed in a timeframe that will not only frustrate but will cost your company from making money or being able to grow. This company has a terrible attitude and software package that has become so unstable windows 95 has become jealous.

Pros

Finding new and interesting and better software after being driven to the brink of insanity from a under performing, under maintained and un stable product.

Cons

Updates, did I mention updates, they don’t work, they simply fail, it’s like gambling when you update, will the software work tomorrow.... probably not.

Garbage in Garbage out. This program is great, but you have to put in the time or resources to put in all the information and take time to set the switches.

my sales person has been very helpful. Even though I really complained to him when I had to upgrade the pervasive side of Windward. It was not that much, but as a business owner, I felt like everyone has there handed out to collect money. This is not Windwards fault, I had not upgraded pervasive in awhile and really did not know I had to. When my business burned in May of 2016 I had the backups but the three backups where all in the building. I dug through the debris and found the server and windward did not ask for any money to help me get the information back uploaded. I did not have a support package at that time and they could have asked me to upgrade the software and pay for a support package. Windward did not ask me for any money at all. Their technical department spent about 3 hours with my computer guy getting the information linked back up because some of the files where lost. Pros

What I mean by the switches. This program allows you to set up the program the way you want it. It does have a default setting, but I have found that each company is different and require certain information. When sitting up the program go somewhere quiet with no distractions. Also if the program does what you want it to you do not have to upgrade.

Cons

If you don't upgrade then it is very hard for the company or technical support to help because they are running on another version.

Software is still limited on the rental side.

We started with this software, it is still fairly limited on the rental side but it is costly to change.

Pros

Easy to use for the basic functions of our business such as reserving, renting and returning product. Integrated POS.

Cons

Limited as far as scheduling for logistical planning, very basic and a lot of potential for mistakes, too manual in some respects. Rental reports need to be simplified the variety of reports needs to be expanded. Generally there needs to be more reports that are specific to the rental side designed by Windward that help to identify business opportunities as well as areas the business could improve in.

The system is fairly easy to learn and I have been trained on multiple sections of the software.

Sales reports and so on give a great view on how your business is growing

Pros

Many reports are available depending on what you want to keep track. It covers everything from your daily needs to monthly to yearly.

Cons

When updates are done some of the items we have used disappear or are not available with update. Have found some reports aren't accurate.

The benefits more than outway the problems that occur

All in one program for inventory to A/R and A/P etc.

Pros

Inventory control and details that can be entered into each item is awesome. Customer sales tracking is great. Can be adapted to many types of businesses.

Cons

Reports side is not the best. Cannot get an accurate back dated inventory and designing reports is sometimes hard. Need bigger field for invoice numbers when adding bills to workorders.

I have been using Windward System 5 as the Financial Controller for about 18 months

Pros

Windward System 5 is well organized and intuitive for knowledgeable users. It is an extensive system doing just about anything you could want in a business management/accounting system. Reports are extensive and well laid out, and allow you to drill through to the details in most cases.

Cons

It seems plagued with system errors. Not sure if this is just our platform, or if this happens to most users, but we get system errors on a very frequent basis (more than daily). Most are nothing and the system corrects them on its own, but some require more effort, and frequent assistance from Windward Support. Most of the support personnel are very helpful and knowledgeable, so your problems get fixed fairly quickly but they are still a nuisance.

Not the right system for our type of business. Probably better for a small retail company.

Pros

I really don't know what we like most about the software. We have had the system for almost 10 years and it has never worked well for us, even after investing tens of thousands of dollars...

Cons

Not user friendly. Expensive. Support doesn't know how to fix the problem most of the time. System not capable of performing functions that are necessary for our business. Confusing. Have spent hours and hours trying to get the system to work correctly without success. Hired someone to come help us learn the system better that cost us almost so much money and we weren't any further ahead than before they came.

Customizable to a variety of business types. Fairly easy to use and learn the basics.

One software that we can use for the front end of the business and the back.

Pros

I like being able to customize buttons at the cash registers and change them seasonally as we are a garden center and our products do change drastically with the seasons.
Customer support is always very helpful and has fixed most issues that I have had in the past.
We make our nursery signs, labels, and a variety of different types of price tags within System Five. No need for another program as we did need one in the past.
I have not used them yet but having webinars and a learning area available to us is an excellent way to get more out of our software.

Cons

Customer tech support is very good, however I think that it is a bit expensive annually.
The label and form designers work but do not seem to be what you see is what you get. It takes a little finessing to create a label that fits your media properly.

it has been great and have found it very user friendly and easy to use

more up to date information and tracking of items with serial numbers, it was easy to set in place policies and see where we lacked and brought in a lot of controls in the company

Pros

the software is easy to use and customizable. we have found a it works well and have not had too many problems. there are a lot of options in the setup and we are able to change if it does not work. the implementation staff was great and the support is great. when ever I have contacted support they responded very quickly and the webinars have helped make the software better

Cons

it takes a long time to get a feature added and a lot of pestering, there are a few things in the software that does not make sense with the labels

This is a comprehensive, professional POS System that works well and is user friendly.

Pros

The software will provide just about any report needed and in about any arrangement for our company. I love the feature of being able to export reports to Excel to customize them even further, if necessary.

Cons

Because I can do some programming, there are a few tweaks here and there that I would like to be able to do myself. Some minor issues cannot be changed, according to technical support.
