Abra is a pretty basic in-house payroll system. It helps automate more of the process into electronic records, but we still had to require paper timesheets and do a lot of manual cross-checking and verification before processing.
Basic, simple, cost effective

If you are looking for a low-cost payroll provider solution, see how much an online payroll provider that includes electronic timesheets or clocks (Paylocity, Paychoice, Paychex, Paycom, to name a few) first. The systems are hosted and seem much more robust.

I did not like this system at all until I had to try another system and then I realized they have both definite cons and pros. Their customer service is horrible and they do not usually provide much assistance and use outside support contractors that are not always pleasant or timely. I ran into problems quite frequently but I also have to say I was using it for a municipality, not a private company like the software was intended. I can say that the options for reports and capabilities are extremely extensive and the limits seemed never ending in terms of data. They had some hiccups with their ACA reporting add-on but in the end it was extremely simple, easy, and effective to use.

The ability to process payroll at our own schedule since the processing is done in house.
There are many things about the software that do not function as they should. For example, PTO accruals always required some sort of manual adjustment. Also, when I would call support they would be very unhelpful. It seemed as if they were looking up the answer on while I was on the phone with them. They would then send instructions to me on how to fix the issue and it would never fix the issue. Also, the reporting was terrible. There were many reports that did not run the way we expected it to. In order to run a crystal report that was customized was impossible from an end user perspective.
I would recommend that they work out all the things that do not work with the software. Also, it was difficult to customize things to what we wanted. Especially the reporting. Always seemed like a work around needed to be done to get to our end result. Better training of their staff so that they can help end users when they call in.

It has one missing component..the Payroll bit..one would think if you are going to manage people's performance management you would love the ability to pay them too..but that is not included.

Abra's support and notifications of updates are beneficial. The system is very user-friendly. I have lots of information at my fingertips. The system those all the regular reporting such as 941's and W-2's.
I have not had any problems with the product or vendor.
Great product if you process your payroll in house and is more cost effective for the size of our organization.

The software allows easy uploading and access of employee documentations for employment regulations.
When multiple users are on, delays were occurring and documents were lost after uploading failures occurred.
I'd like more security. I think that individuals with access should be allowed to upload documents freely. But reviewing and downloading personal info should be regulated to upper management.

I received virtually zero training on Sage HRMS when I was initially assigned to a company-wide HR data reconstruction; the ease-of-use Sage offered was much appreciated. It is straightforward, making it quite user0friendly even for a novice HRMS employee like myself. It took me minimal effort to distinguish between the different areas in Sage HRMS, including the reporting portion of the software. The goal of my project was to convert ancient hard-copy employee records from two recently merged companies into a digital format, then upload them into Sage HRMS to ensure the entire directory of HR data could be found in one central location by users across the US. The ease of use allowed this process to flow smoothly, which was a God-send for a project manager such as myself.
The downside is Sage HRMS has a very slow upload speed, and uploading multiple documents at once is not an option. My project consisted of compiling several different pieces of information (such as employee I-9s, Tax Forms, Employee Agreements), and I was not able to upload all of those documents at the same time, then assign them to their respective categories within the employee file. That would have decreased the amount of time I spent on uploading documents by over half. Often times, as well, I would be uploading several documents one right after the other, and Sage would crash. There was one instance where I could not access the software for an entire day, because it had crashed and the techs had to run an update before I could get back to work. I checked with the managing partner for the software, and she confirmed that this was an issue and not something I could work around in a timely manner.
Training is not required due to the ease of use, but it is recommended. There were a few times where I ended up completing processes in a much more complicated manner. Then an advanced user showed me an easier way. I would also suggest that you prepare yourself for spending a lot of time uploading documents should you have to do a complete revamp like myself. However, once you have employee information uploaded, maintenance is easy. Adding employees, as well as the data, goes much quicker when it does not involve multiple (hundreds) of uploads within a day. This will also help prevent issues with crashing.
