Bloomerang Software


 

Created in 2012, Bloomerang is a solution for small and growing nonprofits. It enables users to view an organization's donor records, track the best time to contact each donor and measure a donor's engagement level to make it easier for users to know when someone should be contacted.

This proactive approach can help simplify maintaining and increasing donor loyalty, as well as revenue. 

Donor retention rates can be accessed at a glance from the Donor Retention Cockpit, where each donor has a profile of their giving summary. Engagement levels are ranked by “cold”, "cool", "warm" and “hot.” 

Bloomerang is a cloud-based system and allows for unlimited users. The system is a particularly good fit for small to mid-sized nonprofits in a handful of verticals, including animal welfare, faith-based organizations, and human services.

Bloomerang was a Startup of the Year finalist for the TechPoint Mira Awards.

My experience with Bloomerang has been mostly positive. Some of the features are very user friendly and some are not. They have a very good customer service department and their chat online is prompt and helpful. I paid extra for phone support and for one hour of set up help. They walked me through the transfer of date and it was great. It went perfectly with no problems.

Prior to Bloomerang, my small nonprofit used Etapestry. For years, Etap felt like the neglected ugly stepchild of the Blackbaud ecosystem. They've seemed to invest in improvements recently but I wasn't happy with its UN-user friendly interface, convoluted reporting, and complicated pricing (to be fair, all of these have experienced improvements recently). I did an extensive search for 4 other CRM's and what landed us with Bloomerang was essentially two experiences: simplicity and excellent customer service. Right from the beginning, the customer rep guided me through a process that was helpful, inquisitive, informative, and responsive to my needs.

Pros

Ease of use. Excellent customer service. Training materials and courses are the best in the industry. Their focus on donor retention will improve your bottom line. The reporting feature is the easiest and best I've seen. Mobile accessible.

Cons

Still working out some kinks but I'm pleased by the transparency of their system updates and receptiveness to customer feedback to shape future releases. Their custom forms and email templates could be sharper and I wish they could integrate with Mailchimp.

Overall, very satisfied with this product. We were using eTapestry but found it was too cumbersome for our needs. Researched multiple options and ended up with Bloomerang.

Pros

Cons

Does not integrate with MS Office (i.e., you can not "cc" an email to a constituent and have it populate the CRM. Also, the funds raised for the year are for calendar only, we operate on the federal fiscal year and there is no way to change it.

Good news, Jerry! We’re working on a feature right now that allows users to “Bcc” to their Bloomerang database. When released, this feature will capture emails from your work or personal accounts on the appropriate constituent records right in Bloomerang.

Also, we have our eye on the fiscal year adjustments. Right now you can put that information in under your Organization’s settings for the purpose of reporting, and we anticipate more changes along these lines in the future.

I recently switched from Raiser's Edge to Bloomerang because I wanted all of the newest features including cloud based data, e-mail and embedded forms, but didn't want to pay the crazy high price for NXT. While it much less complex, it maintains almost all of the functionality I'm looking for. Plus, it is VERY intuitive, will integrate donor wealth screening, show me their twitter feed, and allow me to enter the current decade of databases. Support during the conversion was very good. Did I mention that I can add all the custom fields I want? No more jamming round pegs into square holes and remembering that a field name actually means something else. Their free included training is also very good.

Pros

Easy to learn and use.
Great package of features without a lot of crazy extras.
Good value for the money.
Good support.
Integrated e-mail.
Integrated DonorSearch.

Cons

A little less flexibility on complex importing.
Only one security level - can't authorize someone to view but not change. Probably not the best if you have a large, widespread staff.

Advice to Others

Look at everything. View demos of the 5-10 that look like possibilities. Play in the "sandboxes" of your final 3.

We are a small non-profit with a small budget that needed a CRM that would work for us budget-wise while also helping us build our donors giving. Bloomerang is very easy to use and anyone can learn it. For what we need it works really well and we have seen results.

Pros

Simple to learn how to use. Very functional and anyone can learn how to use it. I love the home screen that gives you all the info you want right when you login.

Cons

The letters come out in PDF so if you need to make a change you either have to re-run the letters or convert them to word.
The reminders dont have any pop-ups so you have to go in a check everyday if you have any reminders or tasks due.

Advice to Others

Bloomerang is perfect for a small non-profit that needs a CRM to work for them. We have seen an increase in our donor retention and giving over the past year thanks to Bloomerang

Really appreciate your thoughts, Katie. A quick note on the letters since this is something we're often asked about.

Exporting letters as a Word Doc or another type of editable file was something we grappled early on, and ultimately decided that the potential benefits don't outweigh the drawbacks.

For example, if you made any changes outside of Bloomerang, the letter saved in Bloomerang wouldn't reflect what you actually sent to the donor. To add some personalization, we recommend instead that you export and print the letter in Bloomerang, and then add handwritten notes before sending.

After weeks of research our nonprofit decided that Bloomerang was the best fit for our fundraising needs. Bloomerang is founded by the same creator of Etapestry and it is evident that the software was built on a wealth of experience in non profit fundraising. We can now track interactions with donors, set follow-up reminders, and organize communication all in one place. We can measure donor engagement through email opens, events attended, volunteer opportunities, social media engagement. We are also very excited to be able to track and measure donor retention, which is something we have not been able to do in the past.

Pros

We purchased a package of 1,000 records and with an additional annual cost of $14 a month we can access an integrated donor research tool. This allows us to search who supporters give to and how much, the value of their house, and who they give to politically through a database. This is an incredible deal since this process normally takes a lot of time and research from a staff member.

Cons

The API is open but not easy to integrate with any other systems an organization might use to track information like Actionkit. There are plug in tools you can use to upload information and records from another database or system but you cannot easily sync another database system to Bloomrang so that they communicate regularly. Depending on your needs as an organization this may not be relevant to you.

We are a small shop non-profit and because of Bloomerang's affordability, we have been able to transform our fundraising strategies in ways that we could have never imagined. With only three individuals working on the administrative side (Development Associate, Administrative Director, and President & CEO) and needing to raise just over a million dollars each year, we are dependent on the services that Bloomerang provides us.

The customer service team is unbelievably amazing and each and every question is always answered in a timely manner. Each rep takes the time to explain WHY and HOW certain steps are important so that you actually can grow and learn. We just generated our year-end appeal mailing list and on our old reporting program, it took running several reports and then using formulas in excel to remove duplicate records. Countless staff hours used to go into this endeavor but because of Bloomerang and the Bloomerang team, we have our most carefully curated and hand-selected year-end mailing list that we have ever had (at a fraction of staff time nonetheless!) Our team chatted with the Bloomerang staff for 5-6 hours and they answered EVERY SINGLE question. We went from spending 30-40 hours creating this list to no more than 10. For this, we are incredibly grateful.

The reporting features have enabled us to better direct our fundraising endeavors and we can send targeted mailings with tailored asks based off of future giving capacity. Our acknowledgement letters have an incredibly fast turnaround time and this simply was not feasible when we were still using our previous database. The ability to add interactions and notes to our donor profiles have helped us form a better understanding of our constituents and have provided us with the opportunity to develop deeper relationships with our donors. We also love that our online donation forms can sync with Bloomerang so that we are able to quickly detect whose given to us.

The layout and setup of the system is so simple that we can easily have volunteers or interns hop onto the system to help us clean up our database or add constituents. Going back to our earlier point that we only have three people working on the administrative side, it is so important to us that our system is easy enough for other individuals to be able to work on.

Bloomerang came to our rescue and I firmly believe it is one of the reasons that this has been our best year to date!

I've done several database conversions and implementations in my nearly 20-year career in nonprofits, and without a doubt, the folks at Bloomerang made it fast, easy and seamless. After researching several solutions for donor tracking, we settled on Bloomerang because of it's robust features, customization ability, pricing and training options. Little did I know just how much I would gain from this product! Our implementation manager walked us through the entire process, and once I handed our data over to her, within just a couple short weeks she had all of our information uploaded, customized and ready to roll! I didn't even have to go back to them with any changes, corrections or adjustments! They actually got it right the very first time (something I've never had happen in the implementations I've managed before)!! Since start up, we've found it easy to further customize our data, enter and track donations and new constituents, and format and use the online forms for registrations and donations. There is a huge library of pre-recorded webinars to help with training, and their customer service department is very responsive. Plus they have regularly scheduled webinars to help you with all-things development and fundraising - not just webinars to tout their own products, but knowledge that can really help you take your fundraising to the next level. I'm so happy we chose Bloomerang for our donor management software. It's a software solution we won't have to worry about out-growing - the customization of the tracking and reporting will make it valuable and useful to us for years to come. This has been one of the best decisions I've ever made!

I would like to say that Bloomerang went out of their way to make sure that their product worked with our current and future needs. They took time to assess us our needs and to help us understand where their product would benefit us the most before ever talking about the cost. After that, they worked with our allotted amount and were able to get us to an amount that meant we were not sacrificing need.

Pros

I believe the customer service especially Iantha was the best I have seen from any donor software company out there. They spent a great deal of time with me and making sure that I was felt like a family member rather than another customer with money to spend.

I also feel that the software is easy to use and has a great dashboard to monitor the donor information and potential growth.

I think the best feature was their Growth Plan which allowed a new organization like mine to be able to afford full access to the software while we build up our donor ministry.

Cons

I have none at this time.

Advice to Others

If you are new to the gathering information in regard to donors, what they give, when they give, and what they like to give to, then Bloomerang is a great fit.

I love the temperature gauge that indicates how "cool" or "hot" the donor relationship is. I also like how individual constituent records are organized into household groups.

You do have to pay extra for phone support which isn't ideal. But, they do have great video tutorials.

Recommendations

Check out Bloomerang's easy-to-use reporting. It takes all the guess work out of things that are typically overly-complicated in other databases.

I am nearly computer illiterate and Bloomerang was easy to use from the start. on those occasions where I wasn't quite sure what to do, the helpdesk was excellent.

I haven't had any negative issues with the product since I bought it. One of the sales staff that made the presentation was slow to respond when I had questions, but the service from the helpdesk since I purchased the product has been awesome!

Recommendations

Make sure the product include both email, chat, and telephone helpdesk options. They should also have easy to follow how-to videos to help you through some of the most common issues.

Bloomerang is a simple to use database that focuses on fundraising and donor management basics. The user interface is clean and easy to understand. Being able to set up an unlimited number of our own custom fields is great and adding donations in is easy. The ability to design, filter, send, and track emails to constituents from within the system is good. Of all the systems I got trial logins for when researching, it was the only one that was easy to get into and play around with intuitively without watching a bunch of training videos. The online chat support is always fast, responsive, and helpful, and there's the ability to suggest system features and see what features are in the works. It also has a good social media integration, especially with Twitter.

There are some basic functions that the program doesn't have, such as the ability to export acknowledgment letters to Word (you can export to xls or PDf), ability to search for the primary contact of an organization record by name, ability to add documents or other attachments to a constituent record, and notification when a credit card transaction fails. The design features for online donation pages are also somewhat limited so you can't create highly customized giving pages.

Recommendations

Think about who is going to be using the software the most. If you want a system that many people can use easily, Bloomerang is a good fit. If you need to be doing a lot of highly-detailed or complicated functions, it may not be the best system. Bloomerang is also a newer program, so we're hoping new features will continue to be added down the road. The conversion and set up of the system takes someone with some overarching knowledge of data or databases, unless you want to pay extra for help with those.

It is extremely user friendly and easy to navigate for all of our users. The availability of training via webinars or accessible through YouTube has been invaluable when I get "stuck" or need ideas. It is extremely easy to customize fields and the dashboard for our needs. The dashboard option presents all of the needed information in a clear and concise manner so that all users can find the information quickly and accurately. In addition, the ability to assign tasks to users and track them on the dashboard makes project management more efficient. The customer service department always responds in a timely manner and is extremely courteous. Looking forward to using the grant tracking and event management options.

Be sure to compare the ease of use with the big vendors. You will find this software to be the best. It has everything the larger vendors have and more. Some of the forms are not easily adaptable to specific needs and you need to know how to code in order to make particular form useful. Also the Donor Search function that you can purchase separately only searches individuals, not Foundations/Organizations.
