Bloomerang Software

Created in 2012, Bloomerang is a solution for small and growing nonprofits. It enables users to view an organization's donor records, track the best time to contact each donor and measure a donor's engagement level to make it easier for users to know when someone should be contacted.

This proactive approach can help simplify maintaining and increasing donor loyalty, as well as revenue.

Donor retention rates can be accessed at a glance from the Donor Retention Cockpit, where each donor has a profile of their giving summary. Engagement levels are ranked by “cold”, "cool", "warm" and “hot.”

Bloomerang is a cloud-based system and allows for unlimited users. The system is a particularly good fit for small to mid-sized nonprofits in a handful of verticals, including animal welfare, faith-based organizations, and human services.

Bloomerang was a Startup of the Year finalist for the TechPoint Mira Awards.

Pros

Bloomerang has probably one the most comprehensive reporting features I've seen with donor management systems.

Cons

User interface needs a serious overhaul. Not easy to view data on the go (mobile) and can be hard to navigate.

I was surprise that, during the last "big" upgrade, Bloomerang spent more time on being able to move columns around than to addressing laborious constituent input ("Mr. and Mrs." option for a file would be nice).

Pros

The look and fairly intuitive usagexxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Cons

Reporting functionality; reports are long and have to be "cleaned up" for sharing; no easy cash flow report availability

Pros

Loved the functions of Bloomerang, and it has good customer support. Keeps great track of our volunteers and other databases.

Cons

It doesn't have a mortgage payment processing feature, which we need. and as a very small non profit, it is much too expensive, and we are currently looking into other options because we cannot sustain the cost.

Everyone I have dealt with have been professional and helpful!

Pros

Ease of use. Newsletter integration. Customizable fields. Report generation. Webinars and resource materials.

Cons

I wish it integrated with gmail (not just Outlook) and Facebook (not just Twitter). Volunteer tracking is functional, but far from robust.

I still value this software for the seamless tracking it does of donors and donations. It has many useful features that help with development in terms of finances. I'd like to see more features for help with program and volunteer development specifically but that doesn't minimize the usefulness of what it offers. I highly recommend Bloomerang for nonprofits!

Pros

Online donation forms automatically create profiles in your Bloomerang and those forms can be on our website, our Facebook page, etc. Easy to create web forms for all kinds of uses including donations for specific long-term funds or short-term campaigns. Nice reporting to see what's coming in and the ability to acknowledge donations right from the system with emails or letters. Also like the social media tracking to see who's talking about us and this also feeds into the donor "temperature" which is a measure of donor engagement. You can really identify your true champions! Still learning the system so I'm sure we'll continue to discover useful features. Overall, this is an excellent resource for donor tracking and management.

Cons

If a donor is already in the system and enters a one-time contribution via web form that uses different info it will create a separate record which cannot be deleted without calling customer service for back office assistance. I was told it just has to match 2-3 fields but it even created a separate record for me when I entered a web donation using my first name instead of my middle name (what was already in the system) and all other info the same. Also, I wish there was a way to track non-donors well, i.e. volunteers and those we serve. Tried using a web form for a student application but it then required those fields for the entry of all constituents (not just those entered via the form) so we scrapped that plan. Would be nice to be able to track volunteer hours and which programs participants attend then be able to look up attendance rolls via a search on the program name.

The ease of creating reports, the ability to link donations through our website, and the detail that can go into each constituent profile really make managing the organization easier.

Pros

Simple user interface and communication guidelines. As well, integrated communications and donor search features are excellent advantages.

Cons

Pros

I am getting my non-profit up and running on Bloomerang - it's our first CRM so we are converting straight from our spreadsheet database. so far the support has been fantastic, we are getting help with data import and receive prompt replies on any questions. they just added email scheduling which was one of our last things in the 'cons' column so we are pretty happy so far.

Cons

certain things about the interface could be better - for example certain links should open new panels in the same webpage rather than forcing a new page.

Pros

I really like my home menu and being able to see a snapshot of my fiscal year or week in the same area. I also like that it is all online and I have my database at the tip of my fingers.

Pros

I like that the system is intuitive and user friendly. Getting reports with information we need is not complicated and confusing.

Really like it so far! Good value!

Pros

The software is very intuitive and we have been able to teach our whole staff the basics of using Bloomerang in the last few weeks since we purchased the product. Bloomerang helped make the transition as smooth as possible for us.

Cons

They are missing some basic features like a spot on the profile page for someone's maiden name. They do have a user-requested feature section though and this has been suggested so it is hopefully something they are working on for the future.

Value for Money

I am a huge fan of this software and have told all of my fundraising colleagues about it. In fact, I loved it so much when I recently switched jobs I made sure my new organization became a Bloomerang customer within two weeks of me being there.

Pros

I love how intuitive and easy to use the software is. Even if you are a novice to fundraising, you'll be able to quickly get up to speed thanks to the nice visuals and ongoing training courses they offer. Bloomerang's customer support team is also top notch. They are friendly, knowledgeable and quick. Any question I've contacted them with, I usually was able to receive an answer within a few hours, oftentimes even within 30 minutes. My absolute favorite feature so far (I'm discovering new favorites on a regular basis) is being able to create reports based on the donor engagement level. It helped me a lot with the segmentation of donors and "deep cleaning" my database.

Cons

There are a few things that I hope the development team will be adding in the future. I don't like that the campaign process on the home page cannot be set for an annual goal. That would be a nice quick summary to have to share with the board. I also would like the donation page to be more customizable to include images.

Excellent and growing CRM for nonprofits run by former nonprofit leaders

Prior to Bloomerang, my small nonprofit used Etapestry. For years, Etap felt like the neglected ugly stepchild of the Blackbaud ecosystem. They've seemed to invest in improvements recently but I wasn't happy with its UN-user friendly interface, convoluted reporting, and complicated pricing (to be fair, all of these have experienced improvements recently). I did an extensive search for 4 other CRM's and what landed us with Bloomerang was essentially two experiences: simplicity and excellent customer service. Right from the beginning, the customer rep guided me through a process that was helpful, inquisitive, informative, and responsive to my needs.

Pros

Ease of use. Excellent customer service. Training materials and courses are the best in the industry. Their focus on donor retention will improve your bottom line. The reporting feature is the easiest and best I've seen. Mobile accessible.

Cons

Still working out some kinks but I'm pleased by the transparency of their system updates and receptiveness to customer feedback to shape future releases. Their custom forms and email templates could be sharper and I wish they could integrate with Mailchimp.

Overall, very satisfied with this product. We were using eTapestry but found it was too cumbersome for our needs. Researched multiple options and ended up with Bloomerang.

Pros

Ease of use with minimal training, chat support, costs

Cons

Does not integrate with MS Office (i.e., you can not "cc" an email to a constituent and have it populate the CRM. Also, the funds raised for the year are for calendar only, we operate on the federal fiscal year and there is no way to change it.

  Response: Billy, Bloomerang

Good news, Jerry! We’re working on a feature right now that allows users to “Bcc” to their Bloomerang database. When released, this feature will capture emails from your work or personal accounts on the appropriate constituent records right in Bloomerang.

Also, we have our eye on the fiscal year adjustments. Right now you can put that information in under your Organization’s settings for the purpose of reporting, and we anticipate more changes along these lines in the future.

Intuitive System You Can Actually Use

Value for Money

I recently switched from Raiser's Edge to Bloomerang because I wanted all of the newest features including cloud based data, e-mail and embedded forms, but didn't want to pay the crazy high price for NXT. While it much less complex, it maintains almost all of the functionality I'm looking for. Plus, it is VERY intuitive, will integrate donor wealth screening, show me their twitter feed, and allow me to enter the current decade of databases. Support during the conversion was very good. Did I mention that I can add all the custom fields I want? No more jamming round pegs into square holes and remembering that a field name actually means something else. Their free included training is also very good.

Pros

Easy to learn and use.
Great package of features without a lot of crazy extras.
Good value for the money.
Good support.
Integrated e-mail.
Integrated DonorSearch.

Cons

A little less flexibility on complex importing.
Only one security level - can't authorize someone to view but not change. Probably not the best if you have a large, widespread staff.

Advice to Others

Look at everything. View demos of the 5-10 that look like possibilities. Play in the "sandboxes" of your final 3.

Whoa! Thanks, Jeff. Can’t wait to share this feedback with our team. And speaking of feedback, would you be open to sharing a bit more about what you’d like from our import tool in the Product Forums? More time to raise money, feel more organized, can track progress and goals.

Pros

I can track everything about my donors and volunteers, including contact information, notes, giving and volunteer history, and all interactions from emails to personal meetings. But it doesn't require a lot of my time to enter this information, allowing me more time to actually do my job in raising money. It is very easy to then pull the information out in reports.

Cons

It isn't really made for event registration, and membership management could be improved. But it is easy to upload registration information from the ticket managing software we use.

It is a great database and donor management software and it offers the ability to keep all donor information in one place.

Pros

It is easy to use, all your donation information can be contained in one place. Allowing the user to make custom fields assures that you can personalize the information to fit your needs for information. Being able to add personal notes or interactions allows each staff member a place to record their own interactions with each donor.

Cons

The filtering can be somewhat complex and/or clunky and when adding a new contact it automatically adds them to every email lists you have created. It would be much better to let the organization choose which lists to add them to as you create a profile.

Bloomerang is ideal for agencies that are looking for a straightforward interface with the ability to customize fields and reports to your needs. Their social media integration, relationship tracking, and interaction fields takes our ability to get to know donors to another level. The import function, once you get the hang of it, is an incredible time saver. The ability to embed online donations via a custom Bloomerang form into our website has increased our online donations significantly. The program is continually improving and the customer service is excellent.

Pros

-User-friendly interface
-Pretty easy for beginners to pick up
-I love how you can make relationships between people (very nice to pull up a church and find out what volunteers and donors attend that church or go to that book club) and put people into households
-The giving summary on the donor profile and dashboard is a nice visual.
-I like the ability to create tasks (but it would be nice if they sent you email reminders for deadlines that are coming up)
-The ability to create interactions field is very helpful to keep track of your communications, meetings, and other cultivation items that don’t necessarily include a donation.
-Custom forms, including custom donation forms make it so easy to tailor fundraising campaigns.
-Very customizable reports and fields (we now use Bloomerang instead of paying for Volgistics to track volunteer hours)
-Using Bloomerang stripe with our online donation page is fantastic—Our online donations went WAY up from Paypal.
-Great responsive technical support---we use just the online chats and emails and haven’t found a need for phone support.
-Love that this database is always improving. Our last one did not have that capability, so I think Bloomerang has a lot of potential.
-Also love that it’s cloud based---our last database was not.
-You can link your Twitter feed to Bloom and it will automatically populate tweets that your constituents have tweeted, and it gets added to their engagement level.
-I’m using the import function for more and more things…donation entry, mailing interactions, attendance sheets, volunteer hour tracking. Once you get the hang of it, it can save a lot of time if done correctly.

Cons

-Report formatting: All reports export to excel, but it only exports the table and information. It would be nice if it at least included a title (so you remember what you’re looking at), and maybe a time and date it was run.
-Reporting: The new reporting function is very powerful and you can pull great information from it. I do have trouble with how Bloomerang collapses each query. With more complex reports it's hard for me to remember each part of my query when everything is collapsed into a small
-Multiple tributes/notificants (for holidays): You can only put in one tribute per donation right now.
-They need a much better way to input tributes and they also need a way to track and send acknowledgements to people: The honor/memorial function is currently the worst part of Bloomerang…it has a terrible, backwards work flow and a major oversight for nonprofits that process a lot of tribute gifts. Although you can add a “notificant” to a donation, there’s no way to actually send letters to notificants through the letter function. We’ve created a process to notify honorees and notificants manually that works great, but that’s something to keep in mind for folks that process a lot of honor/memorial gifts.
-Special note if you go through the conversion process: When you add a new constituent, there’s a field that Bloomerang populates a date called “Created”. However, when your data is transferred, your original Created dates (if it was tracked in your previous system) will be lost and they’ll all be put into Bloomerang as the date the data was transferred. Bloomerang needs to keep the integrity of the original "Created" date of constituents OR create a custom field to place that information so you can run future reports. [There is no way to use the import feature for us to go back and add this information in, so volunteers are adding it for us].
-Task list: I’d like the task list to show more details to help you know what the task is, and send email reminders. Right now you make a task and then forget about it.
-Letters need to export to word instead of a PDF. We have a pdf editing software here to get around that, but would like to keep our Family House fonts and make minor changes if needed, etc.
-Need a way to catch duplicate records (either with a report, or alert if you're entering an address that's already in the system)

Advice to Others

Take advantage of the conversion process to clean up your current database (are there any fields that you can combine, are there any data inconsistencies that you can fix). The only issue we had when we converted was when all entries into our "Date Constituent Added" field changed from the date we entered the constituent into our system to the date that we imported into Bloomerang. We had to go back through with a custom field and manually re-enter all "constituent add" dates. The customization ability is great, but as a user be careful to not get it too cluttered!

We have been very pleased with Bloomerang since its implementation a little over a year ago. We switched from Raiser's Edge, and made the right choice. The user experience with Bloomerang is far superior - it's attractive to look at, the functionality is simple and intuitive, and we can more easily pull reports. The aspect we appreciate the most is the ability to assign tasks among our team members and update prospect interactions. We were hoping that Bloomerang would integrate with Outlook to alert us when tasks were assigned and due, but until that happens we've built in a work-around: we set notifications on our Outlook calendars to remind us to check Bloomerang tasks ever other day. The ability to track as a team all of the interactions, follow-ups, and stewardship activities in real time helps us be more attentive and give better customer service to our donors. It's clear that Bloomerang was designed by fundraisers for fundraisers - it's a great database and fundraising tool.

We were apprehensive about change at first but the Bloomerang staff made the transition go smoothly. For almost a year now we have enjoyed the ease of entering and acknowledging donations, tracking and targeting donors and communicating with our constituents on a regular basis.

Online customer support was vital as we learned the program and worked through creating reports and newsletters. A Bloomerang representative was always available to answer all of our questions.

We have and will continue to recommend Bloomerang to any organization looking for a user-friendly but comprehensive donor management system. Thank you Bloomerang!

After spending days reviewing and testing multiple web based products for a small nonprofit to keep track of donors, interactions, events, etc, I decided to give Bloomerang a go. I have been very pleased with the product and have recommended it to several other Development professionals in my area. I am a very visual person and the ease of use and being able to see things visually is HUGE! The customer support is speedy and great to work with. I would tell anyone to give them a try for their organization!

Pros

It is basically everything i want

Cons

Still hoping for event management and someday being able to hook up to Facebook!

In 2014 we switched to Bloomerang for our donor database and it was a great decision. The software transition went smoothly and has been easy to use. Customer service is great and fast. I like the chat feature for simple questions. Someone is always ready to help.

Pros

The ease of use. It is very intuitive.

Cons

The only complaint is the limitations on the letter templates.

Advice to Others

The video tutorials are great. I recommend using them often.

I came into a new position and when the company mentioned their donor database it was like they were caught up in a hostage situation. They were stuck in an expensive contract with something they barely knew how to work with. A key component of my hire was that I knew how to work with this big, aggressive, expensive system. What a backward way to think! I had always heard of Bloomerang thanks to their presence at conferences, webinars and experts. To move to a simpler system meant more people could use this tool. So what do I like best? Bloomerang became an effective tool so that more than one person could use the system. Increased functionality meant we could accept online donations and training people became a cinch.
Bloomerang is an excellent tool and I can't see any areas for improvement. One feature several users including myself have requested is currently in development. So Bloomerang listens to their users to offer solutions and keep the platform moving forward. They are patching the holes in the roof and doing the maintenance needed- not making you buy a whole new house to get upgrades.

Everything during our transition went very smoothly; we are VERY happy with the Bloomerang system and I would recommend it highly. The on-line support lessons have proven to be valuable and the team at Bloomerang are very supportive and knowledgeable.

We couldn't be happier with Bloomerang. We transitioned from another software almost a year ago and have watched our users increase, our donor retention grow, and the system's administrator (me) become much happier with managing everything from mailings to reports!

Pros

The ease of use and dynamic reports.

Cons

The import feature can be buggy, but as long as you have the account number associated with your import list, you're fine.

Advice to Others

Know that Bloomerang may do less than some of the competitors, but it does the important stuff well enough to make up for that. In fact, it is because of that focus that the system is a cut above the rest.

The ability to use software online makes it easy to connect anywhere. The reporting feature has made it easy to report to management on our new campaign quickly and accurately. The other feature we are excited about is the email function. The emails look professional and the ability to track who opens the email or clicks links is great information.

Bloomerang is intuitive, user-friendly, and mobile friendly. It's extremely easy to learn, easy to teach and has been a true asset for me and my team. I know my donor retention, campaign progress, and dollars raised daily, monthly, and year to date simply by logging in. No long reports with multiple layers of filters. As a past user of Raisers Edge, Donor2, Donor Perfect and eTapestry I can say that Bloomerang is truly different than the rest. Much easier to use.

Reports are simple and easy to run. It takes minutes to put together a report and once the template is done you can save it and use it again. As a new customer, I purchased phone support and they have been wonderful to work with. If and when I have a question, they are all so very knowledgeable that I'm never on the phone for very long, my question gets answered in a way that the next time the issue comes up I will be able to handle it on my own. THANK YOU phone support, you're awesome!

My data conversion from my other system was truly the easiest conversion I've ever experienced. The Bloomerang conversion manager walked me through step by step. Answered all of my questions and in between working with him I worked with my Customer Advocate that took care of everything else.

The entire team at Bloomerang is top notch.

Our radio station searched high and low for a reasonable donor database that would solve our needs. We had an antiquated database that was not web based that required tedious tasks for everything needed. Bloomerang has been a great solution! We are now over a year into our conversion. The conversion process was great. The staff was super helpful and the timelines and prep work all aligned to make it a seamless transition. We have now come light years ahead with our web-based solution and have all the donor data we need at our fingertips.

Pros

Wed based, great reporting, letters, email, payment processing linkage to our website, donor snapshot and campaign management

Cons

The household icons and linkage, the lack of limited log-in options for our volunteers (versus giving them full database access)

Bloomerang is so easy and enjoyable to use. I am able to manage all of my development processes through it, streamlining tasks and saving time and energy. It has made my job so much easier and I am a better fundraiser because of it.

Pros

The reporting, ease of data entry, mass email management, donor/volunteer engagement and retention tracking

Cons

Very minor issues that will probably be fixed down the road. Can't mass upload tasks (have to manually enter even if they repeat annually) and can't schedule emails to go out at a later time. But the pros way outweigh the cons.

Advice to Others

Don't be intimidated by the cost - it isn't free but it isn't the most expensive on the market either. Yes, you may be paying more than you were before, but the man hours you'll save and the quality of work you'll get out of it is worth the investment, as Bloomerang allows you to spend more time fundraising and less time database managing.

At first glance, the program has everything needed for maintaining a constituent database. Tracking fundraising dollars and generating reports is quite easy. Solicitation of funds and recognition of donors, specific to their giving, takes minimal effort. However, mass emailing has glitches in delivery and reporting. Customer Service is friendly, eager to assist. One great option is the availability to contact customer support via telephone, email, and online chat.

Pros

Ease of use and the availability of online chat with customer support.

Cons

Unreliability of reports in capturing the delivery of emails.
