NeonCRM by Z2 Systems, Inc. is a cloud-based customer relationship management (CRM) suite for small to large nonprofits such as animal welfare groups, human services, and philanthropic foundations. Applications include marketing and outreach, fundraising, donor management, membership management and more.

Online fundraising capabilities help users keep up with changes in donating trends by enabling them to accept donations from multiple channels. Built-in online fundraising tools allow for email blasts, automated tax receipts via email, event registration tracking and automated membership renewal management.

Customized online donation pages mimic the look and feel of existing user websites, offering the ability to create branded donation campaign forms. Customizable event pages can also be configured to match existing websites, and users can send automated event notifications for registered attendees.

Online and offline donations can be added to each constituent record, including the amount given and a complete history of all past donations.

I worked with one of the customer rep and he was a pleasure to work with. Our purchase timeline was painfully slow (on our end) and he never lost patience or was pushy. He listened to what we needed and didn't try to sell us more than that.

Pros

The integrative system allows for streamlining data from 6 sources into 1. When updating the info, it allows for less mistakes since the data only needs to be corrected in one place. The data options are endless. The data is presented cleanly and entering is fairly intuitive. I think this system is easier to use than the one we replaced (and used for 4 years so I was familiar with it).

The packages are easy to compare and have useful additions (for some people), but are not required.

Cons

We didn't switch over soon enough. The thought of no phone and chat support is intimidating when first switching systems. After a month or so, I wouldn't think about it.

Overall good experience, and the staff has always been kind, helpful, and responsive.

Pros

I love the membership and event management systems, and how easy it is to integrate with MailChimp. The price point is great for my small nonprofit.

Cons

I do not like the forms, even when customized. The buttons, fields, and fonts seem outdated. Also, creating custom forms is difficult. You have to switch back and forth between the Forms & Pages Section and the System Setting section, and as a non-tech guy at my small and scrappy non profit, I constantly forget where everything is and how to change things. The system should be designed for the "lay" user, especially for a database that is accessible to small non profits, who most likely don't have the money to hire a full time tech or database manager, but divide responsibilities between the ED, fundraising, and program staff.

Managing this system is almost a full time job. The data upload process was complex to say the least and unless payments are processed through Neon, the continued data entry can be quite tedious.

Cons

It is difficult to use if you have never used a CRM system before. There is definitely a learning curve. I think it is bulky and not very "pretty" as far as the looks of it once published on your site or as the link.

A powerful system (perhaps more powerful than most small organizations need)

Overall, a great system which I'm glad we found. We tried a few others to manage our 3 levels of membership, and none of them lived up to the sales pitch. NeonCRM has so far.

Pros

It can do a lot in terms of membership: Allow new members to join, current and expired members to renew, membership discounts, etc. It's quite affordable, too, and the customer support seems solid so far.

Cons

Running reports can be difficult because there are so many possible data fields that a member can have. I've had considerable difficulty, for example, finding members who signed up--who didn't renew and weren't past members--between certain dates. It's probably just one or two fields in the report that I haven't included, but it's quite frustrating. And though the online help center has a lot of content, I've had to contact support several times because I couldn't find what I was looking for online.

We set up our system in about a week and a half--significantly faster than the recommended timeframe. I have considerable experience with CRMs, and most small organizations would likely have substantial difficulty setting this up themselves. Most organizations will likely want to work closely with Neon to launch their system to its fullest potential.

Great support getting into the system. I am still new to the system, and being the point person to bring this new system to my organization, I appreciate how intuitive it is to learn my way through the Neon way.

Cons

What I don't know how to do yet! I am finding the training videos are super when I take the time to use them. I still am finding that I need more details, and that I have to own training everyone in my organization to fully utilize Neon's features here. I am going to opt for the monthly on-screen training so that I can engage my team in the system. I suggest that Neon consider building an 8 hour team training component into the annual contract.

Pros

Neon provides excellent member data in a detailed and usable format. We have benefited often from easy data retrieval. Also, initial learning was extremely helpful.

Cons

The report writing takes a bit of a learning curve with respect to defining parameters. Also, we have found that editing system emails is a little awkward.

I love that any time I run into an issue, customer support is readily available and it is so easy to type into a search engine and get the answer. The video tutorials are easy to understand and follow. Neon has really taken our organization to another level.

Cons

The only criticism I have is that there are so many functions and ways to integrate with other systems (Survey monkey, QuickBooks, etc) that it can be a little overwhelming at times administrating the whole thing.

Easy to use. Amazing customer service that is quick to respond. They have a web portal you can submit a problem through and they respond or fix it immediately.

Does a great job managing members.

Cons

Data collected from forms is near impossible to work with and you can't share it with your team. It is not collected in an easy to view format, rather a spreadsheet that includes ALL account data for the person responding the the survey. Each time you want to look at the results you have to download a new report and reformat.

There is no way to limit an event to paid members. You must offer a "default" ticket that anyone can purchase.

Website user have to login each time they go to an area of your website that is for members only. Neon sells a custom plugin called Single Sign-On to correct this problem for an additional money. Without it, users get stuck in a cycle of logging in and not redirected to the page they were trying to access. Every time you log in you is taken to a member dashboard instead.

While researching a new CRM for our organization, we liked that NeonCRM included features like Quickbooks integration, MailChimp integration, custom forms etc.

Cons

They really don't do well to inform you how little is available at the entry price. Every integration they showcase and even the ability to create custom forms comes with an additional monthly fee which also increases when your contacts increase beyond your current pricing tier. Our biggest issue is that PayPal discounts are not recorded, so when you push your donation transactions over to Quickbooks, you have to manually edit all of those sales receipts to include the discount from PayPal. Also, any recurring monthly donors in PayPal will have to give their credit card information again in the new Neon process which could run the risk of losing donors. Overall it has not delivered up to our expectations and for a smaller organization, it would be very costly to have all the features. Customer service comes at a fee
and that is not even available until after you purchase the setup call and until you've been a customer for at least six months. Meanwhile, the online support largely results in waiting for hours and then them referring you to a guide you've likely already read. Massively frustrated with this system and it has taken us forever to get it up and running, which has proven to be a waste of time anyway because it can't do what we'd like it to, or at least not without an additional fee.

We received a one month trial that allowed us to explore the CRM with access to most of the features. The product is intuitive and user friendly and includes lots of options for customization. The flexibility to be able to add services as we grow into them is greatly appreciated as well.

The system has lots of functionality (tracking donations from multiple events, creating automatic thank you letters, end of year letters) and there are additional add-ons for more (crowd funding, integration into Quickbooks, etc). The ability to scale makes it more affordable than other bundled similar products that we looked into.

The biggest drawback is customer service. There is a large database of questions/answers, but without added expense, you are largely left to your own to figure out the system and set things up correctly. It's a good system for the value, but due to the lack of ease, I feel that we haven't utilized the system to it's fullest ability.

Pros

It gives a small non-profit an affordable option for keeping track of donations and donors.

Cons

Customer service isn't very good and since the system has a lot of functionality, it can be hard to navigate.

I am finally manoeuvring my way around NEON I find it a but combersome particularly because we are a charity so in regards to man power we utilise volunteers who may not be technologically advanced. I feel it could be more simplistic/user friendly. As the main user I wish I could set a volunteer on data input or to modify records without my assistance.

As both a user and as a consultant, I always recommend neon for any client who needs a self-service solution. I have not seen anything in the market that compares to the ability to create an online form for registrations, donations, memberships, constituent access and use.

In addition, the modules are all there for running a nonprofit - from the store, to events, to volunteers, there is a module and the cost for all of them is not significant.

Pros

the online forms creation is unmatched. The depth of the product is excellent and the reporting can give you what you need to get the data from the system.

Cons

The volunteer module. You can't delete applications and projects. It is the weakest part of the system.

Advice to Others

Don't put the burden of the implementation on the provider. Put a plan together for implementation and make sure before you buy that you go over that plan.

As a nonprofit that only collects a 1.5% admin fee, we are very frugal. Neon is a very good value for the money. We use it to track membership, event registrations, interface with MailChimp for newsletters, etc. Once you become familiar with the interface it is easy to use and has many powerful features.

We are a small charity and had never used crm before so we decided to jump in, primarily at first to register people for an event. It is not intuitive or user-friendly. There are training videos you have to watch before you can call in, but 45 minutes into them, they only answer the most basic questions. Forget customizing your forms or registration. We are not IT people who spend all day writing code so we find it difficult and sometimes impossible to use. The social fundraising has been a nightmare as people who set up a team find themselves unable to join their own team! I don't know what we're doing wrong but we find this really hard to use. We've tried our best for over a year now so feel like we gave it a good chance.

I have been very happy with program. Has done everything we wanted plus some. Only disappointment has been the lack of attention to details in the product support. Closed our first issue after addressing half the issue. Second issue took over a month to resolve.

We have used this software to store donor, member and client records since the founding of our organization 17 years ago. Over time this software has evolved and changed, but continues to be simple and efficient to use and the absolute best product for our organization.

Pros: you can do several types of record keeping all in one efficient place that you can access from anywhere, you can have several users and they can all be working within the software at the same time, the report function has been updated recently and is tremendously useful for all our data crunching needs, simple to merge duplicate records, very customization to your needs, very affordable for the massive amount of storage this keeps for our organization

Cons: for our technical abilities, the back-end and how the system links to our website can be a little confusing and not always straight-forward; there are a few quirks we have yet to figure out that customer service hasn't been able to help us with

NeonCRM is one of the best investments we've made. One of my favorite features is the ability to integrate the software with Quickbooks + MailChimp. Having the different portals speak to each other makes the administration side of things much easier - so we can focus on our mission and increasing our impact.

Pros: 1) easy navigation within accounts, 2) some auto reports are very helpful
Cons: 1) every online transaction creates a new account forcing a manual de-dupe process, eats up available account space and NEON doesn't reconcile a household relationship if the transaction doesn't take place with the head of household, 2) new custom forms do not follow custom template formatting to match the web site, 3) membership purchases/renewals within an event registration don't automatically post to membership forcing a manual reconciliation.

Just like anything new, we're still in a learning curve to discover and train on the ins and outs of all Neon has to offer. Overall, we are learning and benefiting from the conversion to NEON CRM.

Our small, startup non-profit was looking for a CRM that was user-friendly, yet not very expensive. NeonCRM provided us with all the features we wanted, including Peer to Peer Fundraising Campaigns, without the huge costs associated with some of the other CRM's we researched. And, we're happy to see that NeonCRM has been continuously updating and improving their CRM - what a great surprise! We're happy to be using NeonCRM.

The Neon CRM application has been a great improvement for us at Encore Vocal Arts. We were able to take an old MS Access database and other databases with third party vendors like MailChimp, BrownPaper Tickets, and JustGive, and combine them into one powerful database tool that helps us track choir membership, our donors, and our ticket buyers. It allows us to send out regular eBlast communications and to see how many people are opening our emails and who is unsubscribing to our communications. For the money, we couldn't be happier.

If we were to change one thing, it would be to have a little more flexibility in the event registration section. It works fine for ticketing our concerts, but if we could use the word ticket instead of registration it would help our patrons better understand our process.

But as a complete tool, it really has all we need and is easy to use (I am a half time employee and run the whole thing myself with no problems). For a group our size, it is the best bang for the buck!

We started using Neon at the beginning of 2015. It was quite a learning curve for us in a small office and would have found it easier to have the option to call to ask a questions verses having to only watch webinars or pay extra for that phone support. Now that we have learned the system for the daily needs of our organization, we appreciate the updates to enhance the program.

We are a small, scientific not-for-profit company using Neon for our membership database. Neon is easy to use and frequent updates improve the experience. It can be difficult to locate email templates/notifications/areas to update forms we have on our WordPress site BUT! I was given the responsibilities after the employee responsible for updated left. That said, the customer service team is outstanding. When I open a ticket, I get a confirmation immediately. I get a solution very quickly after that. They are very patient and knowledgable.

Pros:
Easy to use.
Very intuitive.
Ability to change and update without any hurdles.
Strong ability to customize with use of common sense tools.
Very responsive support team for all facets of need. Most of my problems were just user error, which were dealt with very professionally and with supporting documentation.
Set-up system by myself with Neon strong support and some online classes.
Data Conversion went very smooth.
Have been using system for over one year now.
