If you understand the importance of relationship building and record accuracy, you will understand how effective RE can be in moves management and major gifts. Documentation is at your fingertips IF you take the time to enter data about prospect/donor visits, likes/dislikes, who knows who, etc.

The depth of the software's capabilities are exactly what makes it difficult to manipulate. It is important to commit to entering all data available in a consistent fashion so that queries and reports will give the output required.

Recommendations

Training on the product and buy-in from fundraisers is essential to success.

My biggest likes for the Raiser's Edge are the various modules: Events, Membership and Online Express. I can organize the information and pull it back out in queries so easily. The canned reporting is not bad either. They pretty much have every kind of basic report you could need. You can pull some pretty decent reports that track actions, solicitors, giving and profiles. The key is making sure your data is clean and organized.

Speaking of which, Raiser's Edge has done a great job of improving it's data clean up functions. They have improved duplicate removals. They have added e-mail and phone clean ups. And they are always on top of making sure their clients are heard (even if it takes them a little while to deliver).

Likes Least

The reports have aged out at this point in the desktop version (non-cloud). Development departments are looking for different ways to report their money and we are now depending on Crystal Reports to constantly fill that void. I wished the reports were more malleable and you could really build out the layouts to accommodate what staff wants to see. The biggest thing I hear in terms of complaints from my staff are the number of clicks to get a process done, whether entering an event on a record to recording a membership. Sure we can set up default settings for many of the procedures, but there is still that need sometimes to have to go through and enter manually.

Recommendations

Really evaluate your data and the processes for inputting that data into the system. The more organized you are with how you enter the data, the better return you get from the system. My biggest pet peeve (and it happens with all organizations) is the Attributes tab as the institutional junk drawer. There needs to purpose to every piece of data and what it's future life in your system is meant to be. It is important to do all your cleaning up before you move over to Raiser's Edge.

Raiser's Edge is a fantastic software. I have used it for 20 years and stand a witness to their evolution.

The tool has a lot of power for querying and exporting data, as well as customizations and plugins. Because of this it can take some time to feel comfortable with the more advanced use of the software.

Recommendations

Do your research, because there are an increasing number of competitors in this space. However, Blackbaud is very much a leader and there are many additional tools and resources that come along with joining them.

Unimpressed with event modules; hard to integrate with Sphere. Not the most user-friendly system, especially for running reports. The basic user may be overwhelmed. We have specialists in our office to run all queries.

The data is well organized, easy to pull, and easy to export. Although this is the only major database software I have used personally, I have heard multiple comments from others that Raiser's Edge is so much easier and more efficient than other software types on the market. Our organization has been using Raiser's Edge for over 15 years, and we are well pleased with its capabilities and performance.

This software manages everything fundraising related - donor profiles, biological data, giving history, mailing histories, event attendance and seating, EFT and automated credit card transactions, memberships, to-do tasks, alumni information, online giving forms and email blasts (with the optional Online Express module), etc. BlackBaud has an easy-to-access support system if you need help, as well as training, blogs, free webinars and videos so that beginners can easily learn the system.

BlackBaud is a little over-priced on some of its data cleansing services, like EmailFinder and Deceased People Finder. We often get the same service for much cheaper through our mailing house vendors.

Recommendations

Many of the add-on modules are optional, like Online Express (online presence tools) and Membership modules. The Raiser's Edge is excellent software, but if your nonprofit is too small to afford all the features, you can exclude many of the optional ones. Also, BlackBaud offers hosted and non-hosted database service (cloud), so there are options there too, if you have security preferences or data privacy concerns.

I'm happy to see NXT, and glad that we just purchased this product. We look forward to Blackbaud moving more into the web view. We are all ready to get away from the "tab" world. There is some functionality that we have not been happy with, but overall it is a good product.

Honestly, there are aspects of RE that frustrate the heck out of me, but I do like being able to CHAT with support. I think that was a really good idea.

Blackbaud, doesn't seem to put as much effort into their existing products as they do acquiring new ones. Changes or upgrades do not happen in RE as fast as one might expect.

Do your homework and make an informed decision. This is no small price to pay, you have to make an informed decision.

Ensure that you are factoring all of the costs your organization incurs (or would incur) for the additional features and functions provided with RE:NXT before preparing a cost-benefit analysis. There are many hidden expenses for things like on-site hosting, address updates, gift processing, etc. that will all be included with the RE:NXT solution.

The software allows you to keep more than just address and gift data for your constituents. You can customize parts of the software to meet your organization's specific needs. Additional modules can be added as your organization needs grow and budgets allow. Customer support is available through many channels and the company works to help users interact with each other, which can be very beneficial. They offer a variety of training options that are also beneficial and I would argue essential.

Their growth and expansion of products seems to be outpacing the ability in all areas to support it all. On a few occasions I have found promises made by sales staff to be unmet by the software...though it appears to be more of a lack of true understanding of my questions/needs on the part of specific people sales staff. When I ask support staff about it later, they are much clearer on what the software can & can't do.

Recommendations

Be sure you go "beyond" the conversation with the sales reps, especially if you think you have special circumstances. Not all sales staff are as familiar with the products as they seem. Be sure you ask about all the options that might be beneficial to your organization's need & budget as they offer many different services...so what someone recommended to you might not be the best fit. If your the development staff or the IT staff, make sure you communicate internally that you have the IT resources you need and/or the software meets the needs of the end users. BE SURE to talk to references as they will give you a different (& users) perspective on the software. If you don't have the IT support internally, search for some online resources that help you make software decisions. Finally, you are making an investment with software for your organization, don't short-change yourself, invest in training too!
