The software is great for constituent management and tracking donors and gifts for non profits.

The vendor fees are extremely high. Once you commit to their software, they have you. It is near impossible to leave. They used to have great customer support. Their staff was always knowledgeable and willing to go the extra mile to help you with their product. Now you never hear from your account executive unless you contact them and then they pass you off to one of their assistants. Their assistants push you into buying products you do not need and then when you do purchase a product from them and sign the agreement to purchase, you cannot get answers. We purchased an add on module, we contacted them and we were passed to the assistant to our account executive. The assistant got the paperwork signed and it has been over a month and the add on product has still not been activated in our database. I have emailed and called the account executive assistant because we cannot talk to the account executive, i have talked to customer support and have been passed around. This is not the first time I have had this SAME experience from the new Blackbaud. New leadership appears to be clueless to the horrible experiences from their staff.

Recommendations

be honest. You know they charge for every little change.

Very reliable and easy to use. Helps with keep all constituent and gift records in one place. Can also use mail function to produce letters. Gives overall functionality to help track revenue between fundraising and finance.

The system is sometimes slow when a lot of users are logged in. Also the cost per user is high in my opinion.

Recommendations

understand organization size when it comes to constituent records. Do a full review of business needs and users prior to starting to use RE.

I find that data collection is much easier and the on products are easy to follow from inquiry to applicant to candidate to student

There are a few areas where you need to fill certain data fields in order to be able to pull data later; however, the field connected to what data I am trying to draw isn't always intuitive. Also there are one or two areas (such as only being allowed to have 1 enrolment contract a year) that don't always work for the way we run admissions.

Raiser's Edge is the best donor database out there. It is very customizable with modules that can be purchased based on how your organization does business. It has a robust query and reporting feature. Blackbaud has listened to everyone's "wishes" and in doing so has improved the end user experience dramatically.

Recommendations

Be realistic in the needs of your organization before investing. Sometimes a less expensive solution will work for a very small nonprofit. Also be honest about the volume and degree to which your staff is committed to using it. Nothing's worse than investing in a product no one uses, or the daily use just scratches the surface of the capabilities.

If you understand the importance of relationship building and record accuracy, you will understand how effective RE can be in moves management and major gifts. Documentation is at your fingertips IF you take the time to enter data about prospect/donor visits, likes/dislikes, who knows who, etc.

The depth of the software's capabilities are exactly what makes it difficult to manipulate. It is important to commit to entering all data available in a consistent fashion so that queries and reports will give the output required.

My biggest likes for the Raiser's Edge are the various modules: Events, Membership and Online Express. I can organize the information and pull it back out in queries so easily. The canned reporting is not bad either. They pretty much have every kind of basic report you could need. You can pull some pretty decent reports that track actions, solicitors, giving and profiles. The key is making sure your data is clean and organized.

Speaking of which, Raiser's Edge has done a great job of improving it's data clean up functions. They have improved duplicate removals. They have added e-mail and phone clean ups. And they are always on top of making sure their clients are heard (even if it takes them a little while to deliver).

Likes Least

The reports have aged out at this point in the desktop version (non-cloud). Development departments are looking for different ways to report their money and we are now depending on Crystal Reports to constantly fill that void. I wished the reports were more malleable and you could really build out the layouts to accommodate what staff wants to see. The biggest thing I hear in terms of complaints from my staff are the number of clicks to get a process done, whether entering an event on a record to recording a membership. Sure we can set up default settings for many of the procedures, but there is still that need sometimes to have to go through and enter manually.

Recommendations

Really evaluate your data and the processes for inputting that data into the system. The more organized you are with how you enter the data, the better return you get from the system. My biggest pet peeve (and it happens with all organizations) is the Attributes tab as the institutional junk drawer. There needs to purpose to every piece of data and what it's future life in your system is meant to be. It is important to do all your cleaning up before you move over to Raiser's Edge.

Raiser's Edge is a fantastic software. I have used it for 20 years and stand a witness to their evolution.

The data is well organized, easy to pull, and easy to export. Although this is the only major database software I have used personally, I have heard multiple comments from others that Raiser's Edge is so much easier and more efficient than other software types on the market. Our organization has been using Raiser's Edge for over 15 years, and we are well pleased with its capabilities and performance.

This software manages everything fundraising related - donor profiles, biological data, giving history, mailing histories, event attendance and seating, EFT and automated credit card transactions, memberships, to-do tasks, alumni information, online giving forms and email blasts (with the optional Online Express module), etc. BlackBaud has an easy-to-access support system if you need help, as well as training, blogs, free webinars and videos so that beginners can easily learn the system.

BlackBaud is a little over-priced on some of its data cleansing services, like EmailFinder and Deceased People Finder. We often get the same service for much cheaper through our mailing house vendors.

Recommendations

Many of the add-on modules are optional, like Online Express (online presence tools) and Membership modules. The Raiser's Edge is excellent software, but if your nonprofit is too small to afford all the features, you can exclude many of the optional ones. Also, BlackBaud offers hosted and non-hosted database service (cloud), so there are options there too, if you have security preferences or data privacy concerns.

I'm happy to see NXT, and glad that we just purchased this product. We look forward to Blackbaud moving more into the web view. We are all ready to get away from the "tab" world. There is some functionality that we have not been happy with, but overall it is a good product.
