As one of the nonprofit sector's most popular fundraising tools, The Raiser's Edge is a comprehensive system that helps nonprofits achieve their mission by getting the very most out of their existing fundraising strategies. With more than 30 years in the industry devoted entirely to the development of software for nonprofits, BlackBaud offers solutions that work together.

It can be customized to meet the needs of any nonprofit sector: healthcare, faith-based ministries, philanthropic foundations, the arts and more.

Blackbaud NetCommunity can be utilized to create a dynamic, interactive online community with sophisticated web content management and online giving options. Effective fundraising events are made simple with Friends Asking Friends, which can support everything from bake sales to online pledge-driven events.

The Financial Edge ensures fiscal health, managing funds of all kinds, from grants to contributions, then transforming this financial data into both user-friendly dashboards and complex reports to provide transparency across the organization.

The product is designed solely for nonprofits and always has a solution we need, even if we didn't know we needed it. Everyone from BB I've ever worked with has been wonderful and extremely helpful.

Likes Least

It's expensive! For smaller organizations, I can understand how they wouldn't be able to afford RE, at least not with all the bells and whistles.

Recommendations

We're a fairly large organization and RE is a cost-effective solution for us. I would suggest looking closely at the power RE offers and determine if you are ready for RE or if you may still be in the position of using something less complex and complete.

We use Raiser's Edge to track our fundraising activity, including actions, proposals, gifts, notes, and tributes. The layout is easy to use with menus on the left-hand side. Blackbaud Support is good about helping with questions, usually in a quick turn-around time.

Likes Least

Blackbaud becomes excited when we show mild interest in a product. It would be great if they reduce the number of cold calls and keep track of our responses in their system, as there seems to be some turn-over within their team. We asked them a few times to limit contact, if we need something, we will contact them.

Recommendations

Talk to other Raiser Edge users and get their feedback on products. It's best to have information in writing, as the account representatives can over-promise projects. Prepare specific questions for the training, as they are generally an overview of topic.

Blackbaud support is very responsive in most cases in regards to usual data tasks.

Likes Least

The database is clunky and old. Tables definition seems outdated and it's many more steps than needed to pull data from the system or update data in the system.

Recommendations

Our worst experience was after the 7.94 upgrade. We had to export all of our phone data, update it, then import it back into the system. As we are hosted, this process took over 40 hours. If you are not hosted, I recommend always having a backup and not being a early adopter when a major update first comes out.

The software is generally user friendly and flexible. Offers more than most orgs can/will use for functionality. Provides what we need for accurate gift entry, recogniton, prospect data and reports.

Forums and knowledgebase provide good support options.

Likes Least

The length of time it takes to make basis software programming fixes. Sometimes feel like company is too busy trying to be all things to all people (schools/museums/fundraising orgs/social services orgs/top of the heap for new technology/etc.) to get basic issues addressed by users fixed. And lack of testing prior to releasing new update. We still with prior versions until the bugs are worked through.

Cost of modules/features can be prohibitive, especially for 'small' users.

Recommendations

Recognize that no software will be perfect or probably do everything you want. Go with option that best fits your needs. Make a list of the most important requirements to your org and start evaluation with those.

For the most part, the product is very user friendly. We've hired several individuals with no database and/or RE experience and after a few basic training sessions they are able to pick up what they need to perform basic daily operations. I've used other products which require extensive training, which is fine, but can be time consuming especially when dealing with on-boarding a new hire. As for the vendor, cannot speak highly enough with the people I have interacted with. I always feel confident that my questions and issues will be addressed in a timely matter.

Likes Least

I do feel there are some definite things lacking in the export and report aspect of RE.

Recommendations

Try it for a week, not a few days and make sure you perform tasks that EVERYONE in your org will be performing. As a researcher I know I look at things different than the gift processor but the database/software needs to be effective for every member of your team from admin to management. If it's not, it's not the right product for your org.

What I like most about Raiser's Edge is that it is user friendly; but when one runs into obstacles, Blackbaud staff is there to help.

Likes Least

What I like least about Raiser's Edge is that you cannot (or at least to my knowledge) export a summary of gifts for spouses/partners separately. For example: a summary of gifts for the donor (both hard and soft) and a summary of gifts for the spouse/partner (both hard and soft).

Recommendations

When someone is evaluating any software they need to itemize exactly what they need to export, in order to be sure all imports and updates meet their needs.

I've been a RE database manager for over 10 years. I've always enjoyed working with the product. I like that I can configure it to hold the information that our advancement team needs to meet our goals. You need to take the time to do some training, but once you know what you're doing RE is a powerful tool.

Likes Least

Sometimes the pricing and invoices are a little unnecessarily cumbersome and take too much time to understand. The billing process could be simpler.

Recommendations

Think about what you want your software to be able to do. At a previous workplace the IT department wanted to go to something less expensive. I had a list of features that were important to have. The other software company didn't come close to the functionality that RE has. Ask questions!

Think about what you want to track and look at Raisers Edge to see how you can track it, then set up procedures before you start entering data. Make sure that either everyone is on board, willing, and able to use it, or there is a procedure in place for getting information to the person entering it, and out of the database to the person who needs it.

Once you understand the capabilities of Raiser's Edge, the sky is the limit. You can dig and look at data from all angles.

Likes Least

It's not intuitive. With my organization, you of course have to understand how the administrator set it up. Because we are a smaller organization there wasn't a lot of guidelines to get started - so there is much history and mining through understanding her logic.

It's not the fault of the actual product :) but rather, since its a tool that can be used in depth, it's not something that everyone has the ability to translate.

Recommendations

How are they going to use it in the end? I have been with two organizations that at first only used RE as a receipt generator. They had no idea what capabilities it had, and even worse, they had an understanding but weren't using it. I'd look at the end game and figure out how to make the tool work best for the organization.
