I find that RE is very versatile and user-friendly. After using the product for 15 years in a healthcare environment, I moved to K-12 Education and have had no trouble switching gears!

Take a look at all aspects of the program and ask lots of questions. If you can, play around with a sample database.

I do like the idea that RE, Education Edge, and Financial Edge can all be connected to each other and function with a BlackBaud OCC website. Blackbaud also tends to be prompt and thorough about answering support questions.

Raiser's Edge is not intuitive at all. It is difficult to learn to use. Doing things that should be simple, like creating relationships between constituents, is convoluted and difficult. You have to go through so many tabs and screens to accomplish any task in RE. Also, the program looks ancient, which doesn't inspire confidence. While that doesn't exactly impact performance, for a computer program, that makes me feel like the company isn't invested in their program.

Recommendations

It takes a long time to learn to use the Raiser's Edge program, but it can be a powerful program if used to its full potential.

Compared to other products on the market, Raiser's Edge is fairly easy to use, and all the products are integrated, which, in a school, is a key feature. Blackbaud is helpful and a good vendor to work with on any sized project.

If you aren't experienced in creating complex queries or reports, it can be tough getting data out. I'm also not a fan of having to pay for all modules; they should come standard with the ability for an organization to not show them.

Recommendations

Take your time; look at everything. Try to work on a test site prior to a full migration; that way, you are familiar with the product. Also, take all the training available.

I love the versatility of the Raiser's Edge and the ability to tailor it to your organization's needs.

It's highly complex. It's easy to get bogged down in all the fields/details.

Recommendations

Configuration is key. Knowing how your data will be entered and subsequently reported out - internal reports, external reports, mailings - will all have an effect on configuration. Think it all through well, and continue to review the configuration post-implementation. Don't keep adding to tables - evaluate them because they can get too large and unwieldy fast.

Training is so important for all users. The system is truly simple enough that all users should be able to run basic reports if they understand the way their organization has set up key fields (constituent codes, appeals, funds, etc.).

I like the easy navigation, super accessible documentation and the extensive knowledge base that's available. I love the layout of the constituent record and how easy it is to navigate around that record and really get a picture of the constituents history with your organization.

The query tool. As an individual with extensive SQL experience, I find the tool clunky and limiting. Thankfully, depending on your support package, the RODBA plug in allows you to utilize your SQL skills if you have them!

Recommendations

If you have a large donor base and you need to be able to paint a picture of your donors so that you can make a difference, RE is a good tool for you.

Caring and responsive customer support. Powerful program with flexibility to create code tables that apply to our organization.

Branching into too many areas and not doing a very good job of integrating them well. Making changes that negatively impact customer without adequate testing and troubleshooting - Omnibar, 7.94, etc. Creating too many communication channels and not coordinating them well. Same issues listed as problems for customers in Idea Bank, blogs, forums, Champions, Community, etc. Slap a new catchy name on it and create another place to share feedback, while failing to address the feedback they've already been given. Restrictions on third-party partnerships will drive customers to outside hosting partners. Trying to be everything to everyone; you can't win.

Recommendations

It is the industry gold standard, and I love the product for power and flexibility. Tread slowly and carefully when considering add-ons (NetCommunity, Luminate, hosting, and the other offerings) to make sure they work well together and will do what you expect them to.

Love the user-defined system; the ability to use fields how your organization needs/wants to. The fields are fairly self-explanatory. The amount of information that can be stored is incredible!

The Raiser's Edge does almost everything we need it to do, which is more than I can say for any other product we use at our institution. They really know the non-profit market well.

As I stated above, it does almost everything. But, if it doesn't do something it is very unlikely you will ever get what you want changed. Also, I am not a fan of their customer support. There are some really good support personnel that you might find, but they can only do so much. It is nearly impossible to get in touch with anyone who can actually move your ideas forward.

Recommendations

Talk to similar institutions that use this before buying. That will give you a good idea of whether or not it will work for you. Get functionality promises in writing as part of the contract, because they often aren't able to deliver what is agreed to in the sales phase. I don't think it is intentional deception, just a failure to be thorough in investigation of needs.

It works well with their other product, The Financial Edge. They are also a dominant vendor who will be around for years to come.

Deployment of patches and updates is archaic at best. It has been this way for my 13 years working with them, and they have no known plans to improve the process. Additionally, Blackbaud pushes really hard for their cloud products. Beware, because once you give them your data, you will not get it back easily to move away from them if you need to. Support over the years has been fair to very poor. Our organization at one point had to go outside of support to contact one of their VPs to fix an issue.

Recommendations

I would not choose this software unless you need it in work with Financial Edge.

Blackbaud has become a one-stop shop for all things nonprofit technology-related. I love the integration between all their different products, and Raiser's Edge is the nonprofit standard for database functionality; it's highly powerful and pretty easy to learn to use.

I would like to be able to write my own custom reports without needing a full working knowledge of Crystal Reports. The "canned" reports that come with the software are highly customizable, but there are some instances where I would like to pull things a little differently from what they offer.

Recommendations

This is world-class software and priced accordingly. I would not recommend it to a very small nonprofit with few constituents. That being said, I think it is well worth the investment for any nonprofit that is looking to take their information to the next level and to be able to report on results over time easily.

The software captures data in a concise manner and is easy to work with. It is relatively easy to learn and with practice, you can manipulate how to extract and work with the data on a higher level.

I have no real issues with the product, however, I am finding that Blackbaud has lost its way in terms of developing a real database. It has grown quickly by absorbing competitors and instead of thoughtfully producing products that work, they are moving quickly to get more and more out to the clients.

Recommendations

Be patient. Think through what you need and how to work with the data with in the database. This is not something that can be done quickly.
