The software allows you to keep more than just address and gift data for your constituents. You can customize parts of the software to meet your organization's specific needs. Additional modules can be added as your organization needs grow and budgets allow. Customer support is available through many channels and the company works to help users interact with each other, which can be very beneficial. They offer a variety of training options that are also beneficial and I would argue essential.

Likes Least

Their growth and expansion of products seems to be outpacing the ability in all areas to support it all. On a few occasions I have found promises made by sales staff to be unmet by the software...though it appears to be more of a lack of true understanding of my questions/needs on the part of specific people sales staff. When I ask support staff about it later, they are much clearer on what the software can & can't do.

Recommendations

Be sure you go "beyond" the conversation with the sales reps, especially if you think you have special circumstances. Not all sales staff are as familiar with the products as they seem. Be sure you ask about all the options that might be beneficial to your organization's need & budget as they offer many different services...so what someone recommended to you might not be the best fit. If your the development staff or the IT staff, make sure you communicate internally that you have the IT resources you need and/or the software meets the needs of the end users. BE SURE to talk to references as they will give you a different (& users) perspective on the software. If you don't have the IT support internally, search for some online resources that help you make software decisions. Finally, you are making an investment with software for your organization, don't short-change yourself, invest in training too!

This is a total software package. It was designed by people who understand the industry and it's needs. Internally designed software may on the surface appear better but this will do everything you need and more.

This is the most ubiquitous non-profit database software. It is well-established. It is highly customizable and complex.

Likes Least

It is not very intuitive. It is excellent if you are a data person tracking and reporting on data, but it is difficult--although quite possible--for your average fundraiser to learn.

Recommendations

Blackbaud is the powerhouse behind Raiser's Edge. Blackbaud tends to buy up competing software companies and integrate them into their suite of products, so it's very difficult to go with another product, since it'll probably end up under the Blackbaud umbrella eventually anyway. Blackbaud is getting much better at integrating their products with each other, as well as opening up APIs so vendor software can complement Blackbaud products. Raiser's Edge/Blackbaud is the industry standard database software, and it holds that place for a reason.

This is the best gift processing/donor management systems I have used (I've consulted and used over 6 different systems). The design of the database is more intuitive than most. I also like the constant updates.

Likes Least

It is a bit more expensive than other products and there is an additional cost for additional functionality.

Recommendations

It has many modules so be sure to outline exactly which processes you would like your software to accomplish and get all of your initial pricing with the entire functionality so you are comparing apples to apples. Remember that integrated systems such as RE & NetCommunity) can save time, money, and effort that can be a huge resource savings compared to piecing together disparate systems.

I like Raisers Edge because it has everything you possibly need. I find that with every new project, I find new capabilities within the software. It is very simple to learn, and you can use it at a beginner level very easily and get the job done if that is all you have time for. If you have the time to get deeper in, you can really do some interesting things. I find it very intuitive.

Likes Least

Only that there is so much that the software can do, it's a bit easy to get lost in all the options - so you need to be clear about what you really need to do and have good procedures in place.

Recommendations

Absolutely talk to others who have used it, who are in a similar situation as you. This can help you figure out what modules you need, and how to best set it up for your users.

Not every need and every support request is immediately addressed. Sometimes very basic things can be a little frustrating or inefficient, but we usually work around them.

Don't compare canned reports in a system, but rather look at how flexible it is and how it might grow with your organization's changing needs.

In my last two positions I had to do extensive data cleanup because past employees had used the software incorrectly and entered data however they wanted to. As a result the software program will not report your data correctly.

There are so many ways to tailor this product to the unique way an organization does business, particularly through field naming and attributes. They're very good at improving functionality through upgrades and making it easy to reach out to other users.

Likes Least

This product works best when someone manages the architecture and keeps the data clean, while also performing daily functions through a clear process. The guidebooks often lack great detail for typical usage and issues. More often than not, organizations seem to have a puzzle of data, where it came from, what it means, and when a great database manager leaves, they take with them the finite understanding of their own customizations. There is no platform for defining why a table exists, or how an attribute should be applied, so after 5 or more years with the database, many orgs seem to swimming in data management issues which frustrate the front-end users.

Recommendations

Hire an experienced database manager and compensate them well enough to keep them, through pay and professional development opportunities. Always have another person or team of people who actively perform the same duties as the manager so that if they leave, all is not lost.

The software is one of the most comprehensive fund raising software for the Non Profit Industry. I like how is is "rigid" enough to follow normal database software protocols and data integrity standards, but also flexible enough to be set up so that it "works" for your specific organization. A 4-year private university's needs will be different than that of a food bank or foundation, so it's flexible but strong all at the same time.

The vendor is coming round the bend and really starting to listen to the Customer Voice. They have the absolute best support team I've ever encountered.

Likes Least

Some of the additional modules, such as events and volunteers need a MAJOR re-haul, but the general funcationality is there, and many of the issues we have are specific to how our organization works.

The vendor sometimes seems a little too interested in the bottom line.

Recommendations

Look at how well your fund-raising software integrates with the other sections of your organization, like accounting, marketing and alumni relations. Sometimes that is a MAJOR key in whether the software will work for your organization. Raiser's Edge and Blackbaud have a suite of products that integrate extremely well - and in the long run has saved us many man hours of work.

Raiser's Edge has everything you need to manage, track and move your fundraising plan forward. I appreciate the robust query, export and reporting features most of all. I've also had great success with the chat support feature!

Likes Least

Raiser's Edge is admittedly on the more expensive side. Recently we switched to Raiser's Edge NXT, which includes a number of bundled features. And I will say, the bundling really ends up being a great deal.

Recommendations

Think about your needs 5 years from now. Making a switch to a new database is something you don't want to have to do again for a long time. To the extent you can, get a database that will do more than you need it to right now, and that you can grow into as an organization.
