The Raiser's Edge by Blackbaud

As one of the nonprofit sector's most popular fundraising tools, The Raiser's Edge is a comprehensive system that helps nonprofits achieve their mission by getting the very most out of their existing fundraising strategies. With more than 30 years in the industry devoted entirely to the development of software for nonprofits, BlackBaud offers solutions that work together.

From finding the best prospects to supporter engagement and cultivation to goal analysis and reporting, The Raiser's Edge is a flexible, user-friendly solution that helps nonprofits be more successful and efficient across every department and initiative. It can be customized to meet the needs of any nonprofit sector: healthcare, faith-based ministries, philanthropic foundations, the arts and more.

With Target Analytics, nonprofits can easily find the best prospects and replenish their donor pool, while also analyzing both donor activity and the organization's performance as a whole against their peers in the industry. Blackbaud NetCommunity can be utilized to create a dynamic, interactive online community with sophisticated web content management and online giving options. Effective fundraising events are made simple with Friends Asking Friends, which can support everything from bake sales to online pledge-driven events.

The Financial Edge ensures fiscal health, managing funds of all kinds, from grants to contributions, then transforming this financial data into both user-friendly dashboards and complex reports to provide transparency across the organization.

For nonprofits seeking a simple, scalable fundraising solution that offers end-to-end functionality, The Raiser's Edge by Blackbaud is an affordable, comprehensive system.

I've been using RE since earl 2014, although not on the level I currently use it. There's been a bit of a learning curve at my current position vs. at my previous position, but thanks to BBCON, Bill Connors' book, and lots of online tutorials, I've been able to gain a bit more confidence with the program each day, especially when it comes to pulling queries. One thing I've found helpful is that if there's a step I tend to forget, like remembering to exclude inactive or deceased constituents, writing that step on a Post-it note and sticking it to my computer has been immensely helpful.

I previously worked with many other database interface software in the for-profit world, where I worked for the first 15+ years of my career. So when I started using Raiser's Edge, it came relatively easily to me as it reminded me of other previously used interfaces. We have a large database of over 350K donors, and Raiser's Edge has no problem handling our volume. The Raiser's Edge 7 is now showing some age in how it's structured and functions, but mostly in look and feel. We have been using Raiser's Edge with our database on premise. With the seismic shift into cloud computing, we are planning to move to a Blackbaud hosted environment, which will, in and of itself, bring us closer to feeling like it's not the 90's anymore. But the good news is that Blackbaud knows that the look and feel, usability, functionality and ability to play well with others need to catch up with the rest of technology, and so they introduced Raiser's Edge NXT a couple of years ago. RE NXT looks modern and fills many checkboxes of what fundraisers need to do their jobs in today's environment. (See Pros to find out more of what I like about RE NXT.)

Pros

Raiser's Edge 7 gives you the tools (and/or gives you optional add-on tools) to manage your donor relationships and data in just about any way you can think of. It's a great all-purpose fundraising tool for non-profit organizations. Raiser's Edge NXT (RE NXT) is the next generation, and we are most likely moving to that within the next year. The awesome things about RE NXT are 1. User access to your donor data from anywhere on any device, 2. Unintimidating ease of use for non-techie and techie alike, 3. Open API which means lots of more fantastic compatible tools are being built by Blackbaud partners, 4. Unlimited users - which means now our Board members and many other stakeholders will be able to login and get their reports on the dashboard instead of waiting for emailed or, even worse, hard-copy reports to be run and delivered to them by our staff.

Cons

My experience with the Customer Support has been less than stellar. Sometimes it seems like the Customer Support's go-to answer is, "No" or "No, you can't do that." Unless the answer is, "Well, if you buy this other tool we have, then you can do that." But since we have no plans to move off of Blackbaud products, thank heavens they have an amazing Blackbaud Community network where you can ask any question and get tons of advice from folks just like you working in this software daily. Blackbaud Community is now the first place I go when I need support. Many times the question I have has already been asked and answered in the past, and so just searching through the discussions will get me my answer or point me in the right direction, instead of wasting time trying to re-invent the wheel. My fairly high rating in this review on Customer Support is mostly because of Blackbaud Community and our fairly newly assigned account manager.

Advice to Others

Join and utilize the Blackbaud Community. They will save your life. Get the Blackbaud Learn subscription and take the courses, which are very professional and invaluable learning tools. You would never expect an employee to just be able to figure out another software like Excel or SQL without ever having had training of some kind, and Blackbaud software is no different. You need ongoing training to get the full benefit of using Raiser's Edge. If you join Blackbaud Champions (basically the users club), you end up with perks like discounts on going to bbcon, and going to bbcon, in turn, gets you discounts, and some freebies even, on Blackbaud products.

I've been using Raiser's Edge for over 10 years to manage development, event, and membership data.

Pros

Raiser's Edge is the most robust and developed software in the fundraising field. The software is incredibly customizable and holds a mass amount of data. Data is easy to get in and out of the system, provided you have a trained staff member. There are hundreds of canned reports plus the ability to create custom reports. The customer support team at Blackbaud is very responsive and there are many online training materials and classes available.

Cons

Raiser's Edge may not be affordable for smaller organizations and the software is not very user friendly for non-data minded individuals. Using the software correctly requires that you have a knowledgeable person on your team who can spend time customizing the product and learning the ins and outs of reporting, exporting, importing, etc.

Advice to Others

Contact Blackbaud and schedule a demo! Blackbaud has over 20 product lines that meet the needs and budgets of non-profits (and for-profits) of all sizes. And once you see the product - don't be overwhelmed by all it can do!

The product is the standard by which all non-profit donor management software should be measured and Blackbaud is a great company with incredible staff who really try to help their customers to find the right products to enable them to achieve their organizational objectives.

Likes Least

The product can be intimidating for people who are not comfortable with computers/software and who are resistant to training.

Raiser's Edge allows you to store and analyze all of your organization's most pertinent information.

Likes Least

There are a few analysis functions that could use streamlining. Certain donation processing features are clunky within the event module.

Recommendations

It's worth looking into, but make sure you have the time to dedicate to it. RE has features that allow for easy customization, but without proper management can turn into a data nightmare.

It is a great organization tool and perfect for setting up a system of having many different users. I like that users can have limited access so that there is no worry about anyone accidentally messing up certain areas, and those users don't need to learn how to navigate more than they need to.

Likes Least

Navigating the software is not always the easiest. For someone who uses in-depth aspects of it, but not very frequently, it can be very difficult to find something or make simple changes.

Recommendations

Utilize the training material available with RE, or pay for the training series. There is a lot to learn, and it is a lot more useful with the knowledge needed to use it.

I love how many capabilities that this database has to offer. There are so many ways to get to know your donors, track giving, and a variety of grouping/reporting tools. Everyone I have worked with at Blackbaud has been really friendly and willing to help. I have used Raiser's Edge at both a small organization as well as medium to large organization in terms of budgets and gifts coming in. I love using it and the fluidity of the tasks. At the small organization, we also utilized the membership module.

Likes Least

Raiser's Edge capabilities are overwhelming when you are learning and takes a long time to really understand even the basic capabilities. When working with Blackbaud you have several people connected to your account. For example, you have an Account Rep, a Target Analytics Rep, a Training Rep, ect. It can be confusing when it is time to renew your policy and you want to make changes.

Recommendations

Keep in mind your budget, the number of gifts you bring in, and what you want to use it for. Seek out others in your community who utilize the different software to talk to actual users.

The hard part about such a comprehensive database is the learning curve and training required to master the product. However, once the time and training is invested, it is such a valuable resource that it is highly worth the effort.

Raiser's Edge is a powerhouse for the management of donor data. It is easy to track a donor's contributions and see their giving history at a glance. I especially like the ability to identify each donor with a constituent code, which makes it very convenient to pull reports on specific groups of people who donate (like volunteers, board members, or staff). With the ability to see giving trends in multiple ways, data analysis is much more comprehensive and quicker to review than with other similar software types I have used.

Likes Least

Certain custom reports or queries can be difficult to design for the desired output, requiring help from Customer Service. Unfortunately, the wait time to speak with a live customer service representative is always VERY long. The online chat option can work in some instances, but not always. It would be nice if there were more representatives available to help via phone. The product is also very expensive and there are additional costs to add new components, even modifications like changes to the online interface. Every new development for the product comes with a high price.

Recommendations

Look into the customer service available and ease of use for compiling the reports you will need. Find out whether you can add components as they are developed or as you need, and see what the fees are like.

Blackbaud is the largest vendor in this arena and they offer an extensive support system. Raiser's Edge can do a lot of things and they offer many options to expand and add capabilities.

Likes Least

Personally, I think it's overkill for a small shop like ours. It's fairly complicated and not customizable. While it can do many other things, it isn't always easy to figure them out and each additional capability comes with a significant cost. I think the older version, hosted on your own computer or network is past it's prime - which is why they are pushing NXT.

Recommendations

Try out "sandbox" versions of alternatives before getting set on one. If you are a large shop with multiple users, RE might be good for you. If you are smaller, look at other options. Make a check list of your "must have" and "would like to have" items before you begin your comparisons. And think about cloud-based alternatives with more integration and on-line capabilities.
It's not a bad product and is very reliable. It's just not the perfect solution for everyone.

Blackbaud is the ONLY logical choice for our development needs—offering us a technological ecosystem of rich content as well as responsive customer support. Here at Marin Community Clinics, we pride ourselves on being a modern, world-class health home for our community; our partnership with Blackbaud reflects that this tenet is not superficial, rather encompasses all aspects of our organization.
Specifically addressing The Raiser’s Edge, it is a beast— a beast of gigantic proportions. I am grateful for the plethora of classes Blackbaud offers, both in person and online. Having the ability to continually improve my knowledge of the program allows me to be on the cutting edge of updates and development trends.

The only gripe would be the cost of additional modules. Like we could really use events but only once a year and really only a small small part of what events could really do. We need an events mini module option.

The vendor fees are extremely high. Once you commit to their software, they have you. It is near impossible to leave. They used to have great customer support. Their staff was always knowledgeable and willing to go the extra mile to help you with their product. Now you never hear from your account executive unless you contact them and then they pass you off to one of their assistants. Their assistants push you into buying products you do not need and then when you do purchase a product from them and sign the agreement to purchase, you cannot get answers. We purchased an add on module, we contacted them and we were passed to the assistant to our account executive. The assistant got the paperwork signed and it has been over a month and the add on product has still not been activated in our database. I have emailed and called the account executive assistant because we cannot talk to the account executive, i have talked to customer support and have been passed around. This is not the first time I have had this SAME experience from the new Blackbaud. New leadership appears to be clueless to the horrible experiences from their staff.
