Spectrum offers full-featured accounting, document management, and job cost solutions, as well as project management capabilities.  The project management application combines financial data, document management, and project workflow information. I know there's so much more I could do with Spectrum, but I'm limited.

Pros

It's functionality. The system is easy to use and navigate through once you have an understanding of it's functions.

Cons

I don't like that I cannot correct mistakes that are, in my eyes, minimal. For example, and I've done this more than once, if I set up a job an invert the job number. I can't go back and revise it, I have to start all over again with the correct number. I believe that a permissions issue, but it should be a corrective issue at entry and it's an administrator fix only.

Better Value Than the Competition

Pros

It is very intuitive and doesn't take a lot of trial and error or reading of a manual to get the hang of it for the most part. It does a great job on tracking costs and because of its ease of use the PMs don't mind entering their own data.

Cons

The reports are not exactly where I would like them to be; job costs are not as detailed as in our previous software but that may just be a function of me not knowing how to use it to its full capability.

Like all programs that have a significant number of features, the more your staff learns about the software the better the ROI. The user interface has a lot going on and can be overwhelming at first. However, there is a logic to it and once learned a diverse array of features can be accessed quickly.

Pros

The ability to access many features from one screen.
The connectivity of features on screen. For example, if a job is displayed, all of the customer information is available as well.
No need to add software to each workstation, software runs within a browser (I've used Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox and my cell phone browser, I understand other browsers are supported as well)
All reports can be emailed right from the display screen.

Cons

Many of the reports must be customized to meet user needs.
Some features are not located in an intuitive place.
Financial statement writer is basic and pretty weak.

Spectrum New Review

The interface is amazing...love this the most.

Pros

It is fully browser based software. In my vetting of software available for unit job costing and billing for heavy / civil that is fully browser based...this is about the only option out there. Good functionality on job cost side, equipment, payroll, and human resources.

Cons

The reporting availability in this software is lacking compared to some others out there...especially on job costing, equipment, and payroll/hr reports. You can tell that the programmers got let out of the cage and got to write the reports instead of a manager/end user. Viewpoint should consult some end users next time for these.

Great Program

Pros

Spectrum makes gathering and analyzing data across the board both realistic and simple! It's a great way to improve access and communication throughout members of the office that may not always get the opportunity to see each other face to face.

Cons

The time spent waiting for reports to load can be cumbersome. Although, it is always worth the wait once we get what we are looking for!

Poor reports

I feel they should have a packet of reports that would make this program for different states. They are already creating these reports for other customers why not just offer them as a package deal to add on for a set price instead of saying they are recreating them each time.

Pros

Easy to look up employees and jobs in most modals because you can type in almost anything to find it. you are type in city, state first name last name or part of any of these to get the info you are looking for.

Cons

reports are not easy to get customized without them quoting 10-14 per report to have customized. In California there are certain reports we need to be able to report to the state. With this program we need to run 3-4 reports to get that info. Their is no report that show PTO and Vacation. The Job Overview reports do not show cash flow. Also many of the reports do not have totals on them so when running reports we also have to add them up manually. There is no way to do a cash pay with out entering an invoice. Not all reports show the same totals. Employees really have to dig into reports to confirm the info is correct.

Multiple buyouts have lead to high turn over and no customer service for Spectrum/Viewpoint.

I recommend passing on this software until they work out there business model.

Pros

I like the document imaging function. It does not seem as if Spectrum has keep up with technology or basic business requirements. They must make there money off selling training and reports.

Cons

Set up is difficult and they have very few experienced trainers. I had a Trainer who was from CA tell me we did not have to set anything up in payroll for CA taxes. Needless to say it did not work. Once you have started payroll you can not make any changes to employee records. Deleting a direct deposit payroll is ridiculously complicated. An invoice has to be entered in AP before you can write a check. Once you start entering an invoice and before you have saved you cannot not make changes to the date or invoice #. There are a lot of extra steps for every function. Reports that come with the software are terrible. They expect you to pay for corrections to there reports and reports that come standard with other software.

Top of the line construction software

Pros

This is great software for the construction industry. I was very impressed. I have researched and used many accounting software. This has the functionality of much more expensive software at a lesser price. This is a software for large to mid size companies that wish to keep accurate monthly accounting records. Standard cheaper accounting software doesn't offer the same functionality.

Cons

There are no time tracking abilities. The construction company I was working for needed time tracking with GPS functions. We could use T-sheets for this but to my knowledge this doesn't integrate with Spectrum.

Very Robust Software for Medium to Large Companies

Our accounting group really likes the software. It seems like it could be a little more intuitive for PMs but once you learn it, it all makes sense.

Pros

Tons of options for tracking and measuring projects. Great WIP functionality. Good options for large projects and also for service work orders.

Cons

Different modules are addition cost. Work orders, inventory, field technician connectivity, etc are all add ins to the base package.Best to look at all the modules you would get good use of as one price.

Construction Software

I am a project accountant and have been a Spectrum user since 1996 when it was called ForeFront and this is the only construction software I've used. Overall I find the software easy to use. I've participated in training led by Spectrum trainers and their help and advise is invaluable. The ability to export data in different file types for analysis - exporting to excel file, data only is one I use regularly. We're also lucky to have an IT software support specialist with extensive Spectrum background who is able to provide SQL reports for those times when the standard reports and exports don't give us enough flexibility with the data for analysis.

Pros

Most processes in Spectrum are intuitive for the user.

Cons

As a long time user of Spectrum, we have a heavily customized Job Cost Report. It's becoming more difficult to accommodate our custom needs as new versions are released.

It's fairly easy to use, once you figure out how to navigate.

Cons

The standard reports are not very useful. Custom reports are almost always needed. Even though most reports can be exported to Excel, they are practically unusable without spending lots of time moving data around.

Pros

modules feed information to each other in relatively familiar pattern and scanning of documents mkaes info search and data backup much less paper intensive and time saving

Cons

Accounting of cash and posting to g/l archaic and not offer options to summarize A/P posting, cannot extract g/l account balance as of a particular date, few internal controls on input of rates and parameters.

I am always learning something new with Spectrum!

I benefit daily from spectrum from payroll and certified payroll reports it really is helpful to get those reports from spectrum and every Contractor I have sent them to has excepted them. We also benefit from job costs and equipment costs management .

Pros

What I like most about spectrum is it really is an all in one program and is always improving, also being able to pull reports on jobs and costs is very convenient and easy.

Cons

Customer support be a bit time consuming. There is so much to spectrum that it can be a bit overwhelming if you are a smaller company.

If you have a strong team with good buy-in you will have success with this software.

Moving from a stand-alone accounting solution to an ERP system has had many benefits and I only see the benefits increasing with the merger/acquisition by Viewpoint.

Pros

Extremely robust software with customization options. The software is flexible enough that you can grow it with your company and it can accommodate changes in your business.

Cons

At first it can seam like there are extra steps to perform tasks, but once you've used the software for a while you'll understand why. The controls are good and the software delivers accurate results when used properly. Thorough user training is critical.

Feels like service is going backwards

It qives our accounting team the tools they need to provide a quick and accurate overview for our company. They are able to perform all accounting functions in one platform.

Pros

Familiar feel, rather easy to train new users. Features are simple and quick to learn. It has served our company well for numerous years.

Cons

Customer service and new features feel like that are going backwards. Takes forever to get issues solved when a few years ago it was quick

Spectrum satisfies multiple needs for us, Constructions as well as Service & Dispatch.

Our business entails both Construction (installation) and service. This software was chosen because it seemed it would satisfy more of our needs than other software that was demonstrated.

Pros

Seems very logically designed and easy to maneuver. One screen provides easy access to all related data/documentation.

Cons

Some areas are still in need of some enhancement, specifically Inventory & Dispatch. But enhancements are released frequently.

Great Experience!

Pros

I am a big fan of Spectrum. My company has been on it for over two years now and we love it so far! The implementation process was as expected, a lot of work but totally worth it. The customer service they offer is great and very quick responses. It is rather expensive, but we have had a wonderful experience so far!

Cons

a little limited on the estimating software side of things, but they do partner with some other companies that you can use but the price you pay is definitely up there.

Overall the software is user friendly & offers a lot of tools.

Pros

I love the document imaging function. We've been able to reduce the amount of paper files in our office. Additionally, it is now much easier to access information quickly when needed. We use the cloud based program, which gives us a lot of flexibility - everyone is able to work from anywhere with an internet connection.

Cons

The standard reports leave a lot to be desired. I find it extremely frustrating that in many cases the only option is to write a report in a separate program.

Pros

The thing that I like most about the software is that it is generally easy to use. There are a lot of places to go if you can't figure something out.

Cons

The cons of this software is the customer help. We have been charged to get something fixed that was Spectrum's fault.
