BambooHR is a cloud-based human resources (HR) software service for small and midsize businesses. BambooHR offers small and growing companies a human resource information system (HRIS) that includes an applicant tracking system (ATS) and HRIS tools to manage all aspects of the employee lifecycle.

BambooHR provides HR process automation tools that are accessible in several languages and multiple currencies. The platform allows HR professionals and managers to track organizational data such as employee turnover and retention.

BambooHR also provides customization services, multiple administrator seats, user support and the ability to maintain inactive employees. Administrators can provide access to all employees or limit access to only those in the company that need it.

Pricing is subscription-based depending on the number of employees plus a one-time implementation fee.

It has everything you could need in an HRIS system. Very easy to learn and navigate. It stores all files and documents for employees and allows them access to see them and request changes that may be needed. Also has performance review capabilities for managers and all employees.

Cons

Not for all businesses. All this functionality doesn't come cheap and might not be the right fit for smaller companies.

I really appreciate the intuitive nature of the interface, the ease of set up and use and the customer support given by the BambooHR team. They were able to add functionality I needed for tracking the training of our employees and really helped with a change in vacation accrual and PTO making the transition to a new policy very easy for me. I also LOVE the Applicant Tracking System! It has made our hiring process much more effective and efficient when recruiting for multiple departments at once.

Cons

I wish I could add modules to the Dashboard and a few more items to the drop down menus in the Applicant Tracking System.

Great ATS. I love the ability to finally send out offer letters. The onboarding process is personalized. Great reports.

Cons

No ability to do custom fields on your own, you must contact customer services and hope that they get it right. There are no customizations with training/certification dates.You can not search for new hires until after they officially start. There is no way to search for pending offers. Custom forms can only work if the spacing is just right. Does not have its own product but does integrate with some partners which means that there are multiple logins. Over great HRIS for the money.

It was easy to use and easy to train others on it as I was consulting for this small company at the time and they asked me to train their staff on using it. Reports were easy to locate and the applicant tracking feature was a bonus this small company liked as they grew.

I don't really see any negatives other than you might need a more powerful system as your business grows

Love the Standard reports. Easy to manipulate data, if needed. Recently added charts, graphs get two thumbs up!

Cons

My main complaint is around the inflexibility of the Performance function. Love the framework but hate that I can't make changes to fit my culture and team capability. It's the main reason I'm currently shopping for additional Talent Management support from other companies.

Would also love to see some upgrades to the ATS but overall - it gets the job done!

Before we chose BambooHR, I had made a deep research and tested more than 10 different HR soft. BambooHR offers the best solutions, quality and support is overall great.

Pros

Employee self-service feature is cool. Ability to adjust different access levels, great time-off tracking, onboarding and offboarding.
Mobile app, files storage.

Cons

In Org Chart it's not possible to set up a matrix structure (when 1 person has a few managers).
Also, it would be good to make ATS an optional feature, not included in basic price. In comparison with other ATS (Greenhouse, BreezyHR, Workable etc) this one is rather limited, so we don't use it.

Middle of the road software that needs improvement

We are currently researching other HR software. I'm not sure which is better, software that contains the modules needed with obvious and crippling flaws or software that is easy to use both by admin and employees with limited modules.

Pros

The idea of on-boarding a new employee electronically is a huge plus. It engages employees before they start and makes it so that they come in with paperwork already filled out and spend their first day doing more than just paperwork.
Most of the framework is in place, but EACH area needs improvement, both in the functionality for administration and the ease of use for employees. The sections offered are vital, but aren't complete.

Cons

The benefits area is lacking a lot of common sense tools - like the ability to attach plan documents to an insurance plan (only a link can be used), display plan cost information to an employee BEFORE they sign up (the pricing is only available AFTER they sign up and become eligible). Many things like this create double the amount of work for the administrator.
The actual on-boarding process was a struggle because even though the forms were done properly by the employees (I sat with a few and watched them), it didn't save all information in completed fields. Employees were frustrated when they had to fill out forms multiple times because you cannot edit once saved.
I love that employees can e-sign documents, but preparing the forms is cumbersome and they can't be customized easily. For instance, if you need to update a form because something has changed or didn't save properly, you have to delete the task and resend to any employees who need an updated form.
When I discussed a few very basic items with support, they just offered a work around that many clients use. These are obvious flaws in the system that need to be addressed, but aren't necessarily a priority. Bamboo HR seems to focus more on flashy design than actual content. It makes them seem like a leader in the industry, but as soon as you dig in, the flaws are obvious.
For the price, there needs to be more development in the software.

I have put in a few requests for development in certain areas and so far, I believe most of what I needed has been met. I don't like having to wait for admin 2 to sign forms before I, as admin 1, need them.

Pros

As a staffing firm with several verticals, our HR and tracking needs are more challenging than most. Our initial setup was a bit more challenging but the Bamooo support did an amazing job to meet our demands. love the help feature too for those one off tasks that I forget how to do every now and again - refreshers are so easy and fast.

Bamboo offers a beautiful platform with tremendous ease of use. It offers excellent ATS (Applicant Tracking) and employee management features, and they continue to innovate and offer improvements and more features each month. Customer service is fantastic.

Cons

There are times when the system can be too simplistic, and not offer the data customization that would be ideal. For example, my company really wanted to use their performance management software, but we would have to comply with Bamboo's timelines for reviews and aren't able to set our own. This is a relatively small disadvantage compared to the variety of really great features they offer.

I also would also like to see Bamboo implement an intranet that would allow employees to communicate with each other and use the system regularly. As is stands now, the vast majority of our employees don't use Bamboo because it's mostly for management, and that seems like a lost opportunity.

BambooHR guides their design decisions using research, a modern understanding of HR philosophy, and customer feedback. They don't let you over-configure the software so you end up torturing your employees; they simply won't let you. Example: They designed the Performance Review module very thoughtfully, posing the minimum number of thoroughly-researched and carefully worded prompts to drive a strong review for both Manager and Employee. They won't let you turn the Performance Review into a 5-page write-up like some circa 1980's multi-national.

Good UI design, and requires minimal configuration out of the box. BambooHR integrates with many other vendors up and downstream in the business: candidate tracking, payroll, time logging, etc...

Cons

The Training functionality is designed to allow documentation of employee education, and requires an instructor to mark the education as complete. Sometimes, education is self-service/eLearning...there's no way for an employee to mark certain themselves "complete" for certain training modules.

It's rather unfortunate hole, which caused us to look at an LMS.

BambooHR has done their research on what makes a good HRIS system. They have made it really simple for HR reps to organize employee information and keep everyone in constant communication.

If you buy this program you have to get the ATS function. It keeps all your applicants organized with a rating system and a quick email function. It now has a offer letter function to quickly send your new hires their OL and can keep track of when they view it and sign it. When their hired they're OL and application automatically go into their electronic file. Send them the new hire packet and they'll love the simple and fun communication. When I review the hiring process with my new hires, they always talk about how easy everything was and how communicative the process is.

Cons

It's a growing platform and a reasonable price. You can't edit every area of BambooHR so sometimes that is a restriction on what you can and can't do. However if you email their support team they'll help find a solution.

Pros

Includes a goal setting tool that helps managers track the progress of their teams. It constantly adds new features. Customer support is very responsive and acts immediately to resolve any issues brought up with them.

Cons

Pricing could be more competitive. The features aren't as robust as other HR software. That being said, the app needs to be upgraded as it doesn't offer the same functionality.

I like how easy it is to request time off, approve requests from direct reports, and quickly see what time is available. I also like that all HR-type tasks are easily seen - so a manager can add notes about employees, add time off, approve requests, check off onboarding or training tasks, etc. in one place.

Cons

Sometimes the functionality of the time off request tool is wonky. Other than that, I find it very user-friendly and any bugs seem to resolve themselves.

This provides a secure way for us to store sensitive employee paperwork, while also providing us with an extremely useful goal setting and performance evaluation tool for our employees.

Pros

I love the goal setting and performance review tool. It's so helpful for keeping our employees on track and helping our supervisors manage their teams effectively. The interface of BambooHR is also very clean and user-friendly. I also love that the BambooHR support team is super responsive to any questions or issues that arise. They always get back to me within hours, and are very helpful. The company culture is very focused on constantly improving and communicating those improvements to their clients. They welcome feedback on suggested new features.

Cons

As a nonprofit organization, I wish the cost was lower, though they do offer a nonprofit discount. We also use the software to handle paperwork for incoming volunteers and visitors, and I wish it was a little bit more customizable for that purpose, instead of using employee-heavy language on all its materials.

It's multi-functional. Although it has a number of issues, even just paying to use it for job postings and on-boarding has been a cost-effective alternative to posting directly on Indeed, LinkedIn, etc., or using a dedicated recruiting platform such as Workable or ZipRecruiter

Pros

Easily my favorite part of this software is the on-boarding functionality. Being able to auto-generate an offer letter and attach W4s, I9s, etc. for signature drastically cuts down on my time, as well as time that normally needs to be set aside for employees on their first day.

Cons

When refreshing job postings after 10 days, BambooHR does not prevent people that have previously applied to reapply for the position. Unlike some software that is more ATS dedicated, like Workable, there is no option to just auto-filter out these repeat applicants. At times, this has led to a rejected candidate being contacted for an interview after having already interviewed and being passed on.

Creating reports and modifying existing setups can be difficult. It would be helpful to have better training or How to details within the system.

Pros

I like that reports are automatically saved and are easy to navigate to rerun. I also like the multiple download options to excel or pdf.

We us bamboo HR for new hires to fill out legal documents. But we use bamboohr daily to keep up to date with our employess.

Cons

That it only post on indeed. We need more platforms to post on. Also that you can't have specific setting for each franchise admin.

The benefits are from tracking , filing, etc.

Pros

I love how you can design your software to your company's specific needs. They are also constantly adding new features and the biggest one for us was the bamboo payroll that we are currently in the process of starting. And most of all their customer service is the BEST! I recommend this to all companies that are looking for a unique and functional HR platform. Our company is getting close to 300 employees and this system cut my work time in half. I can actually leave work at 5pm not 7pm.

Cons

I would love to see a bit more from the performance review software. Our company needs to do more comprehensive reviews due to our licensing requirements and the current performance review software is pretty generalized.
